Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of sycamores” (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “destined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God’s liv-ing word.

Mañana celebramos la fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Car-men, reconocida en Chile como Maipú. Chile es un país con mucha industria marinera y la Virgen del Carmen es la patrona de los marineros por el peligro al cual se expo-nen en el mar. Los frailes Carmelitas han difundido la devoción a la Virgen del monte Carmelo desde el siglo XIII. En aquella época María regaló el escapulario al general de los Car-melitas, Simón Stock, prometiendo que todos los que lo usasen serían recibidos por ella en el cielo, evitando así el infierno. Con el tiempo el escapulario Carmelitano se mo-dificó para uso de todo cristiano. Por esto ella es patrona de todo oficio que tiene peligro de muerte como el de los soldados, camioneros, pilotos, troqueros, etc. Por entender el escapulario como algo mágico, Nues-tra Señora del Carmen ha sido tomada como patrona de los pandilleros porque viven en peligro de ser matados en sus riñas callejeras. Piensan que llevar puesto el escapula-rio es lo necesario para evitar el infierno e ignoran que usar el escapulario es vivir como María, en paz y al servi-cio de los demás.

At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent ma-jority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry’s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the “old religion” in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called “Bloody Mary” for good rea-son.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called “recusants,” from a Latin word meaning “refuse,” since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim “Recusancy” as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician Eng-lish recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition.

HEALING MASS Fr. Steephen Viblanc, OSM, Monday,

Fr. Steephen was born in India to a prayerful family. Immediately after his high school education, he entered the

Servite Order or the Order of Friar Servants of Mary in 1997 and was ordained on April 22, 2009 also for that com-munity. He was then appointed as a Vocation Director as well as both as an Associate Pastor and Pastor for a Servite parish while still in India. His community subsequently assigned him in California on July 2014 and was assigned at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Los Angeles for a period of six months. He was later assigned to Servite High School, an all male Roman Catholic College preparatory high school located in Ana-heim as a Chaplain and Spiritual Director for the school. His main function is counseling the students and saying the everyday mass at the school, confession and re-treats complementing the formation of each student to the person of Christ, drawing them to embrace Christ, love Christ, imitate, live and be Christ to others. Fr. Steephen is also helping out nearby parishes like St. Paul of the Cross, St. Philip's at Fullerton and St. Linus Church. He helps the Cursillo Movement in Anaheim for their weekly Wednesday masses. Father Steephen continues to find his relationship with the Lord increasing everyday in his love to serve God's people as a way of serving His master.

Dear Parish Family, Because We Care Food Pantry serves approximately 70 needy families per month by giv-ing them various grocery and toiletry items to help sustain their families for about 2 weeks. We also hand out about 48 to 60 food bags to homeless people living within our parish community. Our regular food distribution days are the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 3-4:30pm. Our monthly expenses run close to $1,000 and we depend on the gene rosity of our parish family to keep this minis-try going. If you are in a position to help to our wonderful ministry, please consider becoming a regular monthly donor to help keep our pantry shelves stocked. Please call Barbra Manriquez at 562-900-9492 to see what our im-mediate needs are for the next distribution or simply choose a few items off the list below and bring them to the parish office. A receipt for your donation can be pro-vided upon request. PLEASE DO NOT BRING EX-PIRED OR OPENED FOODS. Thank you for your generosity! Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Have you ever felt called to do something? Perhaps it was the moment you realized you were called to a life vocation—marriage, priesthood, or consecrated life, for example—or when you recognized a call to a particular career. Maybe it was a time when you felt called to a certain kind of service or ministry, or to care for the needs of a family member or good friend. The truth is, we are all chosen as Christ’s people, called to share in Christ’s mission of love, to “exist for the praise of his glory,” as we hear in the Letter to the Ephesians today. In today’s first read-ing, Amos tells how he was called from the life of the shepherd to that of the prophet; in the Gospel we hear how the disciples were called out to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

CALLED TO MISSION

As baptized Christians, each of us is called to mission. When Catholics hear the word “mission,” most usually think of those who go to foreign countries to serve and share their faith. Some might also think of a parish mis-sion, a time of focused reflection, usually led by a visiting speaker. Remember the often-quoted line from Mission Impossible, “Your mission, should you choose to accept it”? Sometimes we use the word mission to describe our purpose or goal, what we have been charged to do. Think-ing of mission in this way makes our call as Christians clearer. Our mission is to live as Christian people, to share our faith, to be people of service, and to show Christ’s love to others in the ways that we live our daily lives. The choice to live as people of mission is ours. How do you, or will you, live as a person of mission?

Como cristianos bautizados, cada uno de nosotros está llamado a la misión. Cuando los católicos escuchamos la palabra “misión”, por lo regular muchos pensamos de quienes van a países lejanos para servir y compartir su fe. Algunos podrían también pensar de una misión parro-quial, un tiempo de gracia dedicado a reflexionar, por lo regular guiado por un predicador invitado. Recuerdas una de las frases muchas veces citada de la película Misión imposible: “Tu misión, si decides aceptarla . . .” Algunas veces usamos la palabra misión para describir nuestro propósito o meta, lo que se nos ha encomendado hacer. Pensar de misión de esta manera hace nuestra llamada como cristianos más clara. Nuestra misión es vivir como un pueblo cristiano, compartir nuestra fe, ser un pueblo de servicio y mostrar el amor de Cristo a los demás en las formas como vivimos nuestras vidas todos los días. La elección de vivir como un pueblo de misión es nuestra. ¿Cómo vives o vivirás como una persona de misión?

CALLED TOGETHER Notice that the disciples in today’s Gospel were sent out two by two. This was not only a practical thing for Jesus to do as he sent the disciples out to preach, teach, and heal. It was also very spiritual, for being sent on mission together with another engenders mutual support. We live and grow in faith in deeper and more lasting ways when we are in community with others. Not only is our rela-tionship with Jesus personal, it is also communal—we are drawn into communion with Christ, through and with the community of faith. Being part of a community offers us the strength and perspective found in relationship with others. We find support, encouragement, and consolation in trying times; we more readily challenge one another to live the gospel call to follow Jesus with our lives. What is your mission? With whom are you called?

LLAMADOS JUNTOS

Observa que los discípulos en el Evangelio de hoy fueron enviados de dos en dos. Esto no solo fue algo practico para que Jesús hiciera al enviar a los discípulos a predi-car, enseñar y a sanar. También era algo muy espiritual, porque ser enviado en misión junto con otra persona en-gendra apoyo mutuo. Vivimos y crecemos en la fe en for-mas más profundas y duraderas cuando estamos en comu-nidad con los demás. No solamente es nuestra relación con Jesús es persona, sino también comunitaria, nos senti-mos atraídos por la comunión con Cristo, por medio y con la comunidad de fe. Ser parte de una comunidad nos ofre-ce la fortaleza y perspectiva encontrada en la relación con los demás. Encontramos apoyo, aliento y consuelo en tiempos difíciles; nos desafiamos más rápido uno a otro para vivir la llamada del Evangelio para seguir a Jesús en nuestras vidas. ¿Cuál es tu misión? ¿Con quién estás lla-mado?


Blessings and Glory

The second reading from Ephesians is rather long and with only six sentences, it is not easy to follow. If you take it apart, you see that Paul is very encouraging. He is giving a description of the many blessings God has given us. He says that we are chosen by God and destined for spiri-tual blessings: First is Redemption, meaning that Christ saved us from punishment for our sins by forgiving them instead. Second is the plan of God for saving everyone, by making Christ ruler of the universe. We have to accept these gifts by letting go of the temptations around us and holding on to the love we have received from God. The things of the world, possessions, wealth, or power that pretend to make us happy are replaced with love of God; we then share that love with others, so that they know God loves them, too. As our experience of God’s love grows, we begin to understand the mystery of how God lives in all people. Another blessing Paul notes is adoption by God to a new relationship as brothers and sisters of Christ; holiness is now for all believers, not just priests or religious.

Paul also reminds us that we are chosen and destined to help God bring his plan, his Kingdom, to completion. When we teach children how to love and share, when we are honest with customers or suppliers, when we are not ashamed to show our faith in Jesus, when we are respectful of the poor, elderly, or disabled, we are slowly building the Kingdom of God, or as Paul says, “to bring all things together in heaven and on earth under Christ” (Eph 1:10)

Paul mentions three times in this reading about “the praise of God’s glory.” (Eph 1:14) When we are able to help or for-give, or just be a good example to others, we want them to know that God is in all the good we do. Instead of taking credit for the results, we give God the glory. No, you don’t have to take off your glasses and put on a red cape before helping others. Just mention that God does the real work, we just try not to get in his way.
