On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiv-ing to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet.

La mayoría de los cristianos fuimos bautizados en nuestra infancia o niñez en nombre de la Santísima Trinidad; es por eso que continuamente hay que recordar y aceptar nuestro bautismo y el reto de vivir según el Espíritu de Jesús como hijos e hijas de Dios. Esto se hace cada vez que nos persignamos o santiguamos con la señal de la santa cruz. Así mismo, nuestra fe y religión cristiana esta fundamentada en la Santísima Trinidad y cada persona que entra en nuestra familia tiene que pasar por la cruz y la resurrección. La señal de la cruz la trazamos en nuestro cuerpo des-de la frente hasta nuestro vientre; del hombro derecho al hombro izquierdo— poniendo nuestro corazón casi al centro de este misterio. Muchos latinos terminan la señal poniendo el pulgar sobre el índice en forma de cruz y besándola confirmando el amor que nosotros tenemos por la cruz de Jesús y el hecho que cargamos en nuestros cuerpos el efecto de esa cruz, la reconciliación con Dios. Recordamos con esta señal nuestro bautismo muriendo a una vida de pecado y renaciendo por el Espíritu a una vi-da nueva en Cristo, para la gloria de Dios Padre.

The origins of today’s solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a trou-bled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and proces-sions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimat-hea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great ba-silica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Bel-gium today. The bishop carries the relic through the nar-row streets, and the people wear medieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible.

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Today, we are careful never to come into contact with blood unless protected by gloves, masks, and goggles. In the read-ing from Exodus, however, Moses dramatically splashes blood all over the altar and the people assembled for wor-ship. Blood is the sign of God’s covenant with the Israelites, a powerful bond between Creator and creature. Sprinkling blood on God’s people connects them with the life force of the Lord. The reading from Hebrews shows how God re-mains faithful to the ancient covenant of blood, perfecting it in the bloody death of Jesus. Mercifully, Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross put an end to the bloodshed. Our Eucharistic cele-bration is an unbloody sacrifice. As we participate in the liturgy, we share in the new covenant Jesus gives us, re-corded in our reading from Mark’s Gospel: “Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it.”
AS REAL AS IT GETS The “new covenant” described in Hebrews is every bit as real as the dramatic blood-splashed covenant of Exo-dus. Jesus transformed the covenantal experience for us, putting an end to bloody animal sacrifices. The author of Hebrews explains: “he entered once for all into the sanctu-ary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.” Jesus died, once for all, offering his own blood in atonement for our sins. On the last night of his life, Jesus commanded us to offer bread and wine—which he transforms into his own Body and Blood—in remembrance of his perfect sacrifice. Although pouring wine from a bottle is in a different category from killing a bull and sprinkling its blood, we must never forget that the wine we offer truly becomes the actual Blood of Christ.

DID YOU KNOW? Know the signs of abuse and talk to your children about them Some signs of abuse are too obvious to hide. Unexplained bruises and injuries may indicate abuse at home, and children who are close to a victim may notice these injuries more quickly than an adult, because they spend more time together. Children also share secrets with each other, and if a child is being abused, he/she may be more comfortable confiding in a close friend than an adult. Father Matthew Wheeler
Father Matthew Wheeler was or-dained a priest for the Diocese of Los Angeles on Saturday, June 2, 2018. Father Matthew Wheeler, has been preparing for the priesthood at St. John’s Semi-nary, Camarillo, CA. In 2015, he served as a Seminarian In-tern, at St. Linus Catholic Church and was mentored by
Fr. Tony Gomez. In 2017, Fr. Matt was ordained a Transitional Deacon at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
On Sunday, June 10, 2017, Fr. Matt will celebrate his 1st Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Linus at 10:30 AM. Please join us as we celebrate communion with him. A reception will follow in the hall.

On behalf of Fr. Tony and the OHANA 2018 Committee, we thank you for all who attended and participated in our recent event.
There will not be enough words to express the joy and gratitude I have in my heart, for the overwhelming sup-port and love the good people from both the Parish and school have provided into making our event come to frui-tion. With the same affirmation from our beloved Pastor, Rev. Fr. Tony Gomez, who sadly is counting the remain-ing days he has with us as he prepares for his new assign-ment at St. Philip the Apostle Church in Pasadena. This event will be the last project we will have with him, who has served St. Linus Church for 14 years, and we salute him. In order not to miss anyone in my acknowledgment, allow me to state in general (you know who you are) the contri-bution of the Parish, school leaders, Parish staff, the min-istry and different group leaders! The parents and indi-vidual volunteers, our beloved benefactors and sponsors, including our performers, all who have so generously sacrificed their time, talent, and treasure. Let my prayers and simple offering be my humble sign of response and reflection. And let God who is never outdone in generos-ity be the one to reward and bless you with His gift, only He can give. ROYAL PRIESTHOOD Jesus’ free choice to die for us on the cross per-fected the long tradition of priests offering bloody sacrifices on the altar. As our reading from Hebrews tells us, “Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be.” In his death, Jesus served as both the priest and the victim, “once for all.” Jesus died for us. For all of us. He knows us each by name and raises us all to undivided, unprejudiced dignity. In doing this, Jesus makes us part of a “royal priest-hood.” Under the new covenant, we are baptized into the common priesthood of Jesus and invited to make a sacrifice of our very selves. God still calls ordained priests to offer the sacrifice of Jesus’ Body and Blood every day on our al-tars. This is a great gift, and the focus of our solemn feast today. Our common baptismal priesthood also reminds us that each one of us participates in the great sacrifice of Jesus when we offer our love and deeds on the altar of our hearts.
