religious formation opportunities to everyone from womb
to tomb.

Fellowship Dinner-All parishioners welcome!
Saturday, August 26 after the 4:30 Mass
What is fellowship dinner? About 10 times a year parishioners, a
group, group of families, utilize their culinary skills to prepare a
meal for all to share. Sometimes we need you to provide the des-
sert. Yes, you can do this too! Watch the
calendar and the sign (in the hallway) for the
date. A free-will donation is accepted to
offset the cost of food. Surplus money is
used for Christian justice education here
at Holy Spirit Parish. Contact Cindy for
more information.
Fair Trade Coffee Sales—in the Parish Hall
this weekend, August 5 & 6 after all Masses
Why Purchase Fair Trade Products?
When we become aware of unfair, painful, unjust
conditions that exist for our favorite foods and
products; soon we want to make choices guided on strong Catho-
lic Principals:
- Access to the common good that all can work & grow in fair
working conditions
- Rights are respected
- Supports just practices keeps solidarity with our human family
www.equalexchange.coop/community
Yes, you can make a difference!

system that empowers farmers, strengthens communities, and
benefits the environment. Find out more and volunteer: Be a
part of a chain that helps small farmers with less ‘middle person’
to support a just system and provide scholarships for students in
Guatemala & Pakistan.

called to bring about the Kingdom of God here on
earth?
Sign ups are this weekend after all the Masses! Please stop by
the table at the back of the Church and talk with Kathie or Pat-
sie about what you want to do for our Hosting for the week of
August 20th. Cleaning of the Monsignor House is Saturday,
August 12 from 9:00-10:30. Please consider helping with this
ministry. It is fun and fast to work alongside our Parish com-
munity!
The Monsignor House will be open on Wednesday, August 9,
from 8:00-10:00. Stop by for a cup of coffee. If you have any
donations or questions, please come over or call Kathie at
781-5033.
“And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the
sun and his clothes became white as light.” - MATTHEW 17:2
Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect
Christ’s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the
body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to
reflect His love, mercy and forgiveness to others. When we are
grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through
us because we are made in God’s image.
HELP NEEDED! We are looking for some vol-
unteers to help water the community garden be-
hind Father Dick’s house. The rotation will de-
pend on how many people volunteer. Please call
Chris at 590-4406. Thank you!
Musicians Rehearsals are suspended for the sum-
mer. You are still invited to join the music ministry,
30 minutes before Mass to go thru music. All voices
and most instruments are welcome to help lead the music.
Liturgical Bits and Bytes ~ Mass for the People: Every
Sunday and holy day a pastor celebrates one Mass for the
people entrusted to his care (canon 534). If the pastor cannot
do so for a legitimate reason, he may ask another priest to
lead it, or he may celebrate the Mass himself on another oc-
casion. If the pastor is responsible for more than one parish
on Sundays and holydays, he may celebrate just one Mass
for the intentions of all those people. In Latin, this Mass is
called the missa pro populo.
Parish bulletins commonly publish the requested
intentions for Masses throughout the week. But each week-
end one of the Sunday Masses will be designated for this
special purpose. It carries a title like “for the people,” “for
the parish,” or “pro populo”. The priest and parish receive
no offering for this Mass. It is part of the pastor’s responsi-
bilities to the parish.
The Mass “for the people” is not required on other

days, even though Mass may be well attended. Ash Wednesday
and Thanksgiving Day, for example, are not holydays of obliga-
tion. Other Mass intentions may be accepted on those days.
This custom reminds the parish community of several
values. The pastor has spiritual care for his flock, which includes
praying for them and their intentions. The people can see that
their priest is responding when they ask him to pray for their con-
cerns. Sundays and holydays are honored as the special days on
which the community gathers to praise God, share communion
and hold one another in prayer. At Masses for the people, the
pastor is obliged to pray for the parish. Especially at those
Masses, it’s a good idea for the people to pray for one another as
well. Paul Turner Copyright © 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Virginia St. #170, San Jose, CA 95112,
