Although they are best known for their cajon/cre- ole/seafood, their menu also offers a wide variety of alternatives; everything from steak, a bayou burger, blackened chicken pasta or even pizza. Want to stick with the seafoods, how about catfish filet smothered in crawfish etouffe, blackened alligator and a cup of seafood gumbo? Like I said, “a wide variety” and rave reviews for the menu, owners, and staff. The rave reviews go both ways. Jennifer and Michael, who is retired from the Air Force, say they are so grateful to their staff, who “have definitely become like family to them”, and to their amazing community who have welcomed them with open arms. The Caspari family also have their own crawfish ponds which is a defi- nite plus when you offer an “all you can eat” special every Friday night. And they are pleased to be located near Toledo Bend Lake which was named the #1 Bass Fishing Lake in the Nation by Bassmaster Magazine. It is an honor to be able to come to you each month and let you know what is going on in your Parish Government. I know that it may seem that not much progress is being made in the area of the roads. Please under-stand that there is much more that goes on behind the scenes to make the Parish Gov-ernment work for you. There are some things that we are working on to make a noticeable difference in the very near future, as things can’t continue to carry on as they have been. As I previously stated, we are only as strong as you, our constituents. We work for you. Let us hear from you on any ideas and concerns that you may have.

NSU Student Wins Rapides Symphony Competition The month of March will be memorable for Northwestern State University student Jon-athan Andino. The violinist will perform with two re-gional symphony orchestras that month, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony March 13 and the Rapides Symphony on March 18. Andino, a sophomore, will be performing with the Rapides Symphony after winning the Young Adult/Collegiate division of the or-chestra’s Concerto Competition last weekend against students from throughout Louisiana. Andino, a student of NSU Associate Professor of Applied Violin and Viola Dr. Andrej Kurti, previously was a winner of the NSU Concerto Competition. He won both competitions play-ing “Introduction And Rondo Capriccioso” by Camille Saint-Saëns. “I’ve never performed as a soloist with an orchestra, and I really hope this turns out well,” said Andino, who is from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. “I’m really excited about it. I’ll do my best and with Dr. Kurti’s help, I’ll try to play even bet-ter than at the competition.” Andino said he is honored to perform with his peers in the Natchitoches-North-western Symphony Orchestra and with the Rapides Symphony, which is celebrat-ing its 50th anniversary this season.

“I cannot wait to perform with a professional orchestra such as Rapides Sym-phony Orchestra,” said Andino. “I worked really hard with Dr. Kurti to do my best in that competition, and even when I felt really stressed because of it Dr. Kurti always told me to stay calm and focus, and told me ‘You can do this Jonathan.’” The music performance major said waiting for the results of the Rapides Sym-phony competition was nerve-wracking for him. “I was in the hallway along with my friends waiting for the results and when-ever the judges came out to give the results, my heart started beating really hard, and even though it was cold inside the building, I started sweating,” said Andino. “When he said my name, I felt so excited and I could only think about thanking God for that achievement and also my family, and what would they say when I tell them.” Andino gives Kurti a great deal of credit for his success. “WhenIwon, thefirstthingIdidwascallDr.Kurtitotellhimthegreatnewsand he was also very excited about it because we worked really hard for it,” said Andino. “I’m really thankful to Dr. Kurti. He is a great teacher.”

And so, his efforts began. Richardson’s hard work paid off when the Sabine ParishSheriff’sDepartmentreceivednotificationonJuly23,2013thattheNRAFoundation,Inc.hadapprovedagrantintheamountof$9,090.69fortheRepairand Refurbishment of the existing Sabine Parish Shooting Range. When the work crew began the repairs of the range at the existing site, a closer inspection revealed the severity of several problems including improperly work-ing traps, unsafe and inadequate impact berms and backstops and erosion of a good portion of the ground. It was determined by Sheriff Ronny Richardson that because the site was in such de-plorable condition, it would be more practical and economical to start from scratch in building a new shooting range on other property owned by the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Department. He received approval from the NRA to do just that. With the help of Chief Criminal Deputy John Adair who oversaw the project, the range was relocated and suc-cessfully rebuilt. Today, youthgroups, including 4-H, as wellasHunterSafetyEducationclasses, utilize the facility in addition to deputies and police officersthroughouttheparish. A s w e w e n t t o p r e s s , Richardson informed “Around the Town” that he has just applied for additional grant monies to make additional im-provements and repairs to thefacility.

Sabine Parish Sheriff Ronny Richardson is shown with Lt.Col Oliver Jenkins who was a 2016 Republi-can candidate who sought election to the U.S. House. Jenkins commended Richardson for doing a great job of setting up Sabine Parish’s first ever National Rifle Association Banquet. The NRA awarded Richardson a grant to refurbish the current Sabine Parish Shoot-ing Range.

Hello, anglers. Can you believe it….its February. January has basically been a mild month with the exception of a couple of cold nights and days. Mostdayswereinupper50sand60sand even some 70s. We caught a lot of bass in very shallow water last month and did not catch as many in our deep winter spooning holes. Considering how mild January was I’m assuming that February will be the same. Of course there’s no way to know for sure but my bookings for guide trips are earlier than last year and part of that has to do with how mild January was. We have already used several techniques last month that are normal-ly reserved for February/March/April including wacky and Texas weightless worming. In addition, I always use a jerkbait in January and will continue itsuse this month and love Berkley’s newjerkbaits the Cutter 90 and 110.Check’em out…..you will not be dis-appointed. It has great color options, superactionandawesomehardware.Thehooksarethebest.Ifishthisonamedi-um action 7’3” medium action Veritas rod and Revo STX with 12 lb test Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon allowing me to make long casts which is necessary for jerk-baits. Since Fluorocarbon sinks it allows the bait to reach its optimum depth which on a cold day can be a game changer. Another pattern I will use in February is the wacky rig with a Bottom Hopper, FlatDawg(fiveinchcigartype)andSenko.InormallyuseSpinningtacklewithwacky rigs which is light tackle but not ultra-light. My reel is a Revo 30S and rod isFenwickElite7’2”mediumaction.Mylinechoiceforwackyis10or12testBigGame mono or 10 and 12 lb. Trilene 100& Fluorocarbon. Through the years I have caught6bassover10poundsusingthissetup.Youcan’tgetinarushwiththisset up but you will get more action with light line. You have got to get hooked up before you can land a big one and this set up will get you more hook ups. My hook is the new Berkley Fusion Aberdeen with a 2 or 3/0 size. Check out the Fusion series…..they are quality hooks at a fair price. AnotherFebruarypatternisaTexasrigusing3/16or¼oz.sinker,3/0hook,17fluorocarbon,RevoMGXorSXwithBottomHopperJuneBug,GreenPump-kin, Shady Watermelon Candy and trick worms. I also am using a Carolina rigged Berkley Havoc’s Boss Dog which is a lizard/water dog.
