It never ends…no matter where we are or what we’re doing, we are getting ready for something else. Today is preparation for tomorrow. In sports, practice comes before the real game, but the game itself is practice for the next game. The coaches themselves are practicing along with the team.

Each training exercise is purposeful and powerful. Practice sessions are designed to build skill and strength so that in the real game we will respond as the coach has taught. But, this is the real game and God uses each situation to make us more like Christ—our end game.

Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). That is where we start with our team—a team God put together. A team God designed for His glory and our good. God is at work in us, polishing us to reflect His nature to our team, the students of French Camp Academy.

The InvitationOur job is to call out to our team with the invita-tion of Christ: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).

We are hopeful that each student will throw off the slavery of sin for the free-dom of Christ. Our playbook is the Bible that we use to equip our players to stand and defend or fight with confidence against their opponents. Each play, each victory and defeat are all designed to set us free.

The PlanAfter the initial excitement of arriving at French Camp Academy, fear, guilt and hurt show their faces. So, what’s the plan? We can’t just welcome our team and then say, Play ball.

As they stare at us with confusion, we get out our playbook, teach strategy, help them develop muscle, coordination, and gifts, and show them by example how to run the bases. We do our best to teach that His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence (II Peter 1:3).

Christ lived sacrificially. His call to us is to live sacrificially; the muscle and strength to do this comes from God through the Holy Spirit. God has called us to love and coach each student, knowing that success or failure does not reside in them or us, but in God. As we learn to look to Christ and submit our strengths and weaknesses, we are able to do His will.

Warm-upsSome on our team, our FCA students, may have a more difficult time than others. Some are more eager than others. Others sit down on the bench and try to hide. Some are simply struggling along. Some have prior knowledge, and with others, past training has not supplied the knowledge or tools they need to overcome their opponents.

French Camp Academy is the first place for many of them where they are shown examples of successful living. We listen to them and teach new ways of living. We help them leave behind the hurt and fear that keeps them bound and crippled.

Victory and DefeatWinning in God’s view does not look like winning from our perspective. All the blood, sweat and tears shed on this field are designed to open our eyes to Truth. Our training is designed to carry us to victory. As hard as we work on the ball field, the lessons we learn there can’t compare with what God reveals to us

by His Spirit through His Word. This is the French Camp way of preparing young people for the future.

As staff members, we see each contest as designed to polish us a little more for the next time. Why? So that we continually reveal Jesus to our students. Each opponent requires that we refocus on God’s plan and execute it with confi-dence, because He is at work in us. Total dependence on Christ—this is victory.

After the GameWe run the race; we fight the fight; we play the game. Each bruise, sprain and cut reminds us of our mortality. Each defeat is a sign of our need. Each victory is an encouragement to leave old things behind and hold on to the new.

There are no substitutes, but there are second chances. God’s plan is one of redemption and restoration. Victory or defeat, we don’t drop out or give up. We get up and press on because this is not our end game. We know that in all these things we are more than con-querors through him who loved us (Romans 8:37).

When we look around at the many team members that need us and the number of challenges before us, we know we cannot succeed on our own. We need the Plan. We need the Planner. And He assures us that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39). u

Little things make BIG differences

ACADEMY

Have you ever noticed how we tend to focus on the BIG things in life? It is those big things that we get wrapped up in and they easily become the source of stress, fear and anxiety.

Several years ago, at the beginning of a school year, I entered the dining hall and was headed to my place in line when an excited new young student raced around me to peer into the serving line. As soon as he saw the meal prepared for that day, he jumped into the air with enthusiasm and exclaimed, “Yippee, another hot meal!”

As I reflected on that moment, it was a great reminder to me that I tend to focus too much energy on the big things happening around me. The great and unique moments that impact our lives often come from the simple small things.

I can easily be overwhelmed when I look around campus and see how busy we are and how much more needs to be done. Then, I see one of our maintenance men turn off the weed eater and sit down on the grass next to a student for a long talk. The most important thing about that scene is the simple act of slowing down and focus-ing on the more important thing in our lives—relationships.

Faster…bigger…multitasking…if we do not focus on the fundamentals, the big things will consume us. I be-lieve we only need one thing to make it all fit together and succeed: Jesus. Helping our young people overcome their pain and hurt involves showing them what they really need: Jesus. Is there something consuming your life right now? Is it a BIG thing? Why not give it to Jesus. He can handle it better than we can. He tells us in his word to cast all our cares upon him. He does not say to only cast big or small cares but ... your cares.

Paul in his letter to the Philippians said, “My God shall supply all of your needs according to his riches in Christ Jesus.” I don’t think he meant for us to sit around waiting for the sky to open up. He meant that God’s provi-

sion for us through Christ guarantees more than we can hope for. Just like that young student in the dining hall, we can savor and enjoy with great enthusiasm God’s provi-sion. God keeps on putting hot meals on the table. He continually shows his faithfulness to us in the small things and the big things. Therefore, let us rest in Him, our greatest treasure!

Board Member Ed GoveEd Gove, Jr., has been a board member since 1980 and serves on the Plant and Property Committee. He served as chairman of this committee and on the Executive Committee for many years.

Ed and his wife, Jan, live in Brookhaven, MS and are members of the Faith Presbyterian Church, where he served for several years as the Property Chairman. They have five grown children—Jay, Dianne, Bruce, Brian and Kim, plus five grand-children.

Ed also enjoyed serving on several church, and civic committees plus assisting in expanding the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League.

Ed attended the University of Delaware in 1950 and was drafted in1951. Sergeant Gove was at-tached to the AAA anti-aircraft Battery and be-came a radar section leader. He was one of four Sergeants who trained all 80 officers in the brigade to operate the new M33 Radar system.

While serving, he and his team assisted the NY-NJ Port Authority Airport in tracking all airliner flights for the Idlewild Airport (JFK). The team spent over 1600 hours on their off training time to prove that all but 3 out of 2500 flights were within the safe takeoff and landing patterns.

Upon his discharge he rejoined Hartley Gove Sons, a fam-ily business that will celebrate 125 years making glass ther-mometer tubes.

God has guided FCA through Ed’s insight, encouragement and leadership. The staff and stu-dents reach out with heartfelt thanks for all of his hard work. u

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14).

Team report: Fort Worth Mission Trip Once again this year the Lord provid-ed the opportunity for a team from FCA to serve the homeless through Beautiful Feet Ministries in Fort Worth, Texas.

The FCA team left at 6:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 18, and arrived around 4:30 p.m. By 6:00 they were sharing music, skits, testimonies and helping with supper. The rest of the week was filled with worship, meal service, sorting clothes, preparing hygiene packs and street ministry (delivering food and hygiene packs to the homeless, sharing Scripture, and prayer).

The team helped with lunch on Sunday, boarded the bus and arrived back at FCA at 10:30 p.m. A return trip is in the plans for November, 2013 and the motorcycle team from The Feet will be at FCA in October.

The team included 23 students, 7 adults and represented 16 different churches. Students: Madi Blake, Anna Box, Kaley Edwards, Elexus Hughes, Jaden King, Nancy Lakok, Jessica May, Chelsea McDaniel, Katee Anne Morgan, Gihan Musa, Kyla Perry, Marissa Sheedy, Kendall Shows, Kallye Varner, Carlin West, Gracie Overton, D’erra Carter, Lucy Oakes, Omnia Koumi, Chris May, Nathan May, Ryan Pruitt, and Trevor Wilkerson. Adults: Monica May, Tekoa Miller, Tracie Box, Regina Smith, Ed Maehlmann, Don Winter and Tim Comings. u

Conversations that MatterBy Sylvia Dickson

Each year at FCA orientation, a theme is introduced and kept before us throughout the year. Our theme this year is Speak Life. To move in step with it, FCA and French Camp Presbyterian Church partnered to host a ladies’ retreat entitled Conversations that Matter: Encouraging one another—speaking life and death with our words.

Through a meeting that only God could have choreographed, Rachael Crabb was asked to be our key-note speaker. As a bo-nus, her husband, Dr. Larry Crabb, noted Christian psycholo-gist and author, ac-companied her.

Basing her addresses on Larry’s book, Soul

Talk and her book, Listen In, Rachael spoke about putting first things first, being authentic and speaking life in our conversations. Larry shared with the men on several occasions and on Sunday night they both shared experi-ences and insights at a casual gathering at FCPC.

Karen Cates, staff member, and Grace Button, FCA student, led our music. Debbie and Glen Barlow provided our meals. Door prizes were provided by The Jewel Shop, The Silver Goose, Stephanie’s Shenanigans, Becky’s An-tiques (Louisville, MS), Double Blessings Thrift Shop, The Log Cabin Gift Shop, Council House Café, Merle Norman and Avon Cosmetics. u

Net balls could be good or bad—depending on the game. In tennis, a net ball is a thud. In basketball, it is a swish. In tennis, it’s a fault. In basketball, it’s sweet.

Basketball Watching our basketball teams this year has been sweet. The boys’ team finished first in the 1A Division regular season and first in the Tournament. Winning the opening round of playoffs, the team played in the South State Tournament semifinals. The overall record was 18-4 and only one win away from being in the Final 4 in the state.

The team was coached by Tommy Ward with Devin Fong and Octavious Powell serving as managers. Starting for the team were Jesse Hosket, Dre Carter, Lamin Sillah, Michael Riley, and Cortez Johnson. Other players that competed on the team were Harrison Hilliard, Ty-ler Peters, Nyang Wek, Dameron Leonard, Hunter McKnight, B. J. Hisen, and Grovonte Stewart.

The girls’ team was coming up short in their wins until the District 1A tournament where they poured on the power and finished second. One huge Atta-girl for our girl Panthers. Coached by Martha Ward, the starters on the girls’ team were Carlin West, Suna Kuac, Elexus Hughes, Anne Claire McKnight, and Sonyae McGee-Walker. Vital in supporting and subbing were Megan Moen, Myesha Scott, Abok Nbek, Moesha Scott, Widan Toto, Shonta Triplett, Lucy Oakes, and manager, Faith Lawson.

Tennis, Track, BaseballThings are just beginning to heat up on the tennis court. The track team is running in circles, throwing the discus, leaping hurdles and handing off the baton. Baseball is in full swing, so look out for a home run season from them. Please check www.frenchcamp.org for tennis, track and baseball schedules. u

Going to JacksonBy Sylvia Dickson

The Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, MS was ablaze with color: French Camp Blue on one side; Stringer Red on the other. Two champion teams, hearts pounding with excite-ment, waited to take the field and clinch the state champion-ship for the 2012 football 1A Division.

French Camp triumphed in the North Division with a victory over Shaw. Stringer took the South title after defeating Bogue Chitto. The FCA Panthers finished the regular season 8-2, with an overall 11-3 in the 1A Division.

For the first time in history, FCA was playing for a state trophy. The starting lineup consisted of Hagan Box, Ben Hosket, Lavondra Carter, Daniel Hughes, Jesse Hosket, Jaylon Clemons, Dylan Dickey, Lake Koenig, Jevante McAdory, Andrew Stevens, Cortez Johnson, Douglas Hughes and Matthew Castle. Other team members were Grovonte Stewart, Luke McKnight, Hunter McKnight, Cole Henson, Corrie Witt, Sam Gould, Nyang Wek, Braden McDaniel, Noah Dav-enport, Haven McCaleb, Brooks Warren, Sam Howard, Tucker Zehner, Tommy Bell, Jacob Ansley, Harrison Hilliard. Coaches for our championship team were Head Coach, Nathan Wright, and Assistant Coaches Bruce Hosket, Wiley Rhodes, Jim Rhodes, and JT Cates.

After a grueling game and close scoring, Stringer came out with the state title. The final score: Stringer 20, French Camp 17. The French Camp Academy Panthers held their heads high, congratulated their opponent, and thanked God for His perfect plan.

As the team left the field, we could hear excited comments like, “Next year when we’re here…” u

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the LORD, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing (2 Timothy 4:7-8).

RISEN: The 2012 French Camp Panthers DVD is available - featuring the story of the French Camp football team, Coach Nathan Wright and his son’s

struggles with cancer and the road to the state championship

game in Jackson.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of wit-nesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1).

One of the delightful blessings from God at FCA is our staff. New staff members work alongside sea-soned servants, each learning from and shaping the other. Pictured above are those who received Staff Service Awards for continuous years of service in January: (left to right; front to back) Helen Boyd (25 years), Louella Miller (25), Annie Lue Carter (20), Hugh and Martha Long (25), Mary Sorensen (5), Holly Johnson (10), Kevin and Hannah O’Brien (5), Carrie Browning (5), Tim and Leslie Comings (5), Michael and Audrey Paladino (5). u

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sac-rifice to God (Ephesians 5:1-2).

Whate’er My God Ordains Is RightBy Samuel Rodigast (1649-1708)

Whate’er my God ordains is right: His holy will abideth;

I will be still whate’er he doth; And follow where he guideth.

He is my God: though dark my road. He holds me that I shall not fall.

And so to him I leave it all, He holds me that I shall not fall.

Whate’er my God ordains is right: He never will deceive me.

He leads me by the proper path; I know he will not leave me.

I take, content, what he hath sent. His hand can turn my griefs away,

And patiently I wait his day, His hand can turn my griefs away.

Whate’er my God ordains is right, Though now this cup, in drinking, May bitter seem to my faint heart,

I take it all, unshrinking. My God is true; each morn anew.

Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart, And pain and sorrow shall depart,

Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart.

Whate’er my God ordains is right. Here shall my stand be taken.

Though sorrow, need, or death be mine, Yet am I not forsaken.

My Father’s care is round me there. He holds me that I shall not fall,

And so to him I leave it all, He holds me that I shall not fall.

Allen is a 1995 graduate of FCA. Congratulations to Mom and Pop Barlow and “little brother and sis” Scott (96) and Jennifer (98). He is married to the former Sarah Davis (96) and they have two children, Hayley and Dakota. u

For God, Country and CommunityBy Sylvia Dickson

Once upon a time in French Camp, someone sold flagpoles. It seemed that everyone in town put up a pole to fly Old Glory. One of the first ones in-stalled was at the Margaret Kimble Alumni Mu-seum, spearheaded by Nita Curtis, with another one in her yard.

For decades flags were flown, but eventually some of the poles fell into disrepair. One of these was in Miss Nita’s yard. FCA work crews gathered at Nita Curtis’ house recently to refurbish her flagpole and hold a flag ceremony.

Nita Curtis served her 1947 French Camp Acad-emy graduating class as the vice-president and was

voted Miss FCA. After graduating from MSCW (now MUW) in Columbus, MS, she moved to Atlanta, GA where she taught Physical Education.

In 1987, Nita returned to French Camp to help care for her sisters, Della and Agnes. She spread happiness around town like fertilizer as she poured herself into her family, church and community. Everyone knew who Miss Nita was.

To Nita, the Stars and Stripes flying in her yard is once again a source of happi-ness, and one of the few things she can enjoy. Her friend, Sally Stewart, wrote

the following note following the refur-bishing project:

It is great to live in a community where people care for peo-ple. You don’t know how much the special occasion of the flag ceremony and pre-sentation meant to Nita and me. We couldn’t have been more pleased…She (Nita) goes to the door sev-eral times a day and says “How pretty the flag is,” especially when the wind is blow-ing. God is smiling at what you folks did for Nita. She is a great lady.

A flagpole repaired…a yard raked…a roof repaired…food for the sick…time to sit and visit: that’s what French Camp community is about. And it’s no fairytale to say, And they lived happily ever after. u

Marcus RodriguezBy Sylvia Dickson

Backyard barbecues at grandma’s were a highlight in the life of Marcus Rodri-guez. In 1994 when he was 14 years old he, his 2 brothers and a sister moved in with his grandmother in Poplar Creek, MS. Marcus entered the 9th grade at FCA in 1994 and graduated in 1998.

Even though he did not live in a dorm, the difficulties that brought him here were similar to many dorm stu-dents: divorced parents; physical abuse; drugs in the home; problems in school; unstable lifestyle. Leaving the Past BehindAt one point, he decided to move back home to Baton Rouge, LA. But after several weeks, he realized that the support, love and boundaries he had at his grandma’s and FCA would set him on a firm foundation for future success. Marcus said, I knew I didn’t want to live that way and I had a way out. So, he returned to grandma and FCA.

Looking to the FutureMany people at FCA influenced Marcus. Coach Larry Courtney ex-pected him and all the football players to give their best. Ralph New-man took Marcus on a Mexico mission trip where Newman taught him construction skills and spoke Truth. Russ and Carolyn Akers still have a great influence in his life. After all, he married their daughter, Somer (99), and they have four children: Nevaeh, Arista, Domonic and Joe Luke

Barbecues and the LawJust how important were those backyard barbecues, though? According to Marcus they weren’t typical picnics. Grandma was a retired DEA Agent and many of her guests were big, burly agents with whom she worked. Marcus decided that he wanted to be in law enforcement be-cause of his admiration for them.

Continuing the Good WorkFifteen years later, Marcus is serving as an Investigator with the Choc-taw County Sheriff ’s Department. In 2011 he was selected as the Top Recruit in his Police Academy class. He was singled out for this award because he had the highest overall average of the 31 candidates in aca-demic, shooting and physical fitness.

Marcus was Officer of the Year for Choctaw County last year. He is trained in search and rescue, executive protection, SWAT, and is part of the MS Office of Homeland Security Strike Team.

French Camp Academy, his grandmother and churches—Bethsaida Baptist and French Camp Presbyterian—spoke truth into his life. FCA is pleased to have had a part in laying a firm foundation for Marcus’s life. u

Cast off everything that hinders…and come to 2013 FCA Alumni Day—Saturday May 4. Your Alumni Day has been revamped with twenty-first century flair. Contact Lisa Henning (’87) at 662-547-7231 or [email protected] to save your spot. Here’s the projected lineup for the day:

10:00 am—Start the day at the Welcome Center with cinnamon rolls and a brief business meeting.

11:00 am—Head across the road for a picnic lunch at The FCA President’s Home (Stewart & Rebecca Edwards). Enjoy live music by Southern Flair, Alumni Awards, and tons of good food. Bring your lawn chair or a blanket if you can. If it rains, don’t worry, we will have a plan B.

1:00 pm—Join us near the audito-rium at the new Circle of Honor.

1:30 pm to 3:00 pm—The second annual softball game (Alumni vs. Current Panthers). Contact Paige Rabun or Lisa Henning 662-547-7231 if you would like to play.

You are free to make your own plans for the evening meal. Plan a reunion time with classmates, sample the fare at the Council House Café, or if the weather is good, bring a picnic basket and relax on the lawn.

Of course, you may want to visit your old haunts on campus, see the renovations and new buildings, visit with old friends, or make some new ones. You will be amazed at all the activity in this small town of French Camp, especially the full sprint on the campus of French Camp Academy. u
