Communities of Learning/Kahui Ako and Collaboration As we move into the 21 st century, collaboration is increasingly important across all areas of our education system; from what happens within classrooms between students, to what happens within schools among staff, to what happens between schools and other agencies. “Collaboration means working smarter together, rather than harder alone” (Education Leaders website, NZ) To demonstrate our commitment to collaboration between schools, Hurupaki School has joined with a group of schools, approved by the Minister of Education, to form a CoL, Community of Learning/Kāhui Ako. This is part of the long term education policy, IES, Investing in Educational Success. Communities of Learning are learning partnerships between a group of schools that will use a collaborative approach to improve the educational outcomes for all of the students within it. The schools included in our CoL are: Blomfield Special School, Christian Renewal School, Excellere College, Glenbervie School, Kamo High School, Kamo Intermediate, Kamo School, Kaurihohore School, Totara Grove School, and Whangarei Adventist. There are also up to 30 ECE service providers who contribute to our schools and who have expressed a desire to be involved. This will create a pathway of learning for our children, from ECE to the end of their high school years. Involvement in a CoL requires collaborative practice with a focus on improvement and critical reflection. Collaboration requires working with agreement to a common purpose or goal, and to a common way of achieving that. There is an element of vulnerability as practice is exposed to critique and feedback. When working collaboratively, individuals and whole organisations can more effectively: learn from each other; innovate, prototype and embed effective practices quickly; and avoid repeating errors and ineffective practice. The development of collective skill and expertise is supported. A BoT representative and the Principal from each school in our CoL have met along with representatives from the ECE sector, Ministry of Education and the NZSTA, NZ School Trustees Association. The next step in the process is to develop a number of achievement challenges. The achievement challenges must be approved by the Ministry of Education and will then be worked on collaboratively by the schools and ECE in the CoL. Although the schools in our CoL will be working on the same achievement challenges, it is expected that the unique character of each school will be retained Embracing collaboration is essential for future educational success. It is not sustainable for individual teachers to assume responsibility for the wide range of tasks and roles expected of them in the past – ‘isolated’ in they way they operate with groups of students in individual classrooms. Individual schools cannot continue to operate in isolation, competing for resources, staff and students. Education into the future must be fundamentally more collaborative at every level (CORE, 2017).

Friday 11 August – Term Three Week 3, 2017

Tena ra koutou ki nga hau e wha – Greetings to everybody.

Communities of Learning/Kahui Ako and Collaboration As we move into the 21st century, collaboration is increasingly important across all areas of our education system; from what happens within classrooms between students, to what happens within schools among staff, to what happens between schools and other agencies. “Collaboration means working smarter together, rather than harder alone” (Education Leaders website, NZ)

To demonstrate our commitment to collaboration between schools, Hurupaki School has joined with a group of schools, approved by the Minister of Education, to form a CoL, Community of Learning/Kāhui Ako.

Although the schools in our CoL will be working on the same achievement challenges, it is expected that the unique character of each school will be retained

Embracing collaboration is essential for future educational success.
