First Green tour in FISD

Fowler Middle School has won several environmental awards in the past like "Greenest School in FISD

2008-2009" or "Most plastic bags recycled in 2008-2009". They also ran a very successful energy re-

duction program!

Would you like to know how they did it?

Then please join us on Thursday March 25th, 7:00 pm at Fowler Middle School,

3801 Mc Dermott Rd., Plano, TX 75025 for our first “Green Tour”!

Got paper? A recent small study within Frisco schools has shown that the schools right now are in very different

positions in their quest to becoming “paperless”. The largest group, with 5 out of 14 schools, says they

already send between 76 and 100% of all school information out via email, telephone or website. The

smallest group of 2 schools sends between 1 and 25% of their messages electronically.

All schools agree, though, that it does make sense to send out all information electronically that does

not require a signature, if we still provide a paper copy to the families that don’t have access to the

internet.

The lack of a paper reminder seems to be a problem for some families, but most schools believe that

this will change as families get used to it and more and more information is distributed electronically.

Leadership Frisco Class XIII has adopted a district-wide implementation

of the Watch D.O.G.S. program as its class project.

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is the safe school initiative of the National Center for Fa-

thering; it brings fathers and father figures onto campuses as volunteers in order to provide positive

male role models for students and to create a more safe and secure learning environment. More infor-

mation about the program is available at http://www.fathers.com.

"The program is widely endorsed by the national arm of the PTA for its efforts to bring fathers into

schools as volunteers, and has demonstrated success nationwide, as well as on a handful of Frisco ISD

campuses. Leadership Frisco will present the program to the PTA Council on March 23, as well as to in-

dividual PTAs and principals in the weeks to come, and provide support throughout implementation for

any FISD campus that wants to launch a Watch D.O.G.S. chapter."

S u pe r i n t e nden t ’ s M es sage By Dr. Rick Reedy, FISD Superintendent

Dear PTA Council, I have been thinking about some of the items addressed at the February Council of PTAs meeting and upon reflection I wish I had elaborated more on the topic of the high school additions. The question was asked if adding additions as needed at the six existing high schools is just delaying the inevitable, and in essence the answer is “yes.” Eventually a seventh high school will be needed, but the additions allow this decision to come at a later time when we can make a better decision about the location and its impact on current high school zones. Now that growth has slowed down we can take our time and make a better decision about where to build the seventh campus and which high school(s) from which to pull the student population. Time has not been a luxury we have had in the last decade. The additions will allow us that flexibility and will put off a difficult decision until we have the best information possible. The additions also provide stability until that time. We have grown so fast that many students have started at one high school and graduated from another. Our students and families have been extremely adaptable, but we would prefer for students to have the op-portunity to go to the same high school for all four years whenever possible. The additions will allow hundreds of students to be able to graduate from the school in which they began their high school career. Another reason is economic. These additions will save significant construction and operating funds. Six additions that accommodate 200-300 students basically take the place of one high school, and the estimates are that these additions will cost approximately $6 million each. Construction the additions compared to a new high school saves more than $40 million and serves the needs of the same number of students. There will also be savings realized in lower operating costs, including personnel, by building additions rather than an additional high school at this time. Designs are being developed and a schematic for Centennial High will be reviewed at the March 8 meeting. Those will be available for review and will be on our website as final decisions are made. Please feel free to contact us with any further questions. Thank you as always for everything you do to help communicate with the district and with the community.

thanks to our Sock Hop chair, Gina Saueressig and her committee!

We held our 2nd Adopt a Street Clean Up and 43 participants joined in to clean the street on which Bledsoe is located. The students filled 20 bags of trash and reported that there was less trash this time. Sounds like they are making quite a difference! Other February events included our take out Teacher Luncheon and class Valentine’s Par-ties. The Sock Hop’s 50’s theme blended well into our March Spring Book Fair’s dino diner theme. Our Spring Book Fair started March 6 and will host special events such as Pas-tries for Par-ents, Lunch with Loved Ones and will be open during Open House. Bledsoe was well represented at the Reflections award ceremony on March 5th. We sent 32 entries to FISD Council judging, and are proud to announce that we had 4 pieces winning an Award of Excellence con-tinuing on to State competition. These include Visual Arts category entries. Other areas of recognition were in Music and Photography. Our

Anderson Elementary PTA

Anderson recently kicked off our WatchDOGS program. We kicked it off with a huge pizza party for dads or fa-ther-figures and their kids only. We had 212 dads and kids show up for the pizza party. From that pizza party we had all of our WatchDOGS opportunity days filled on the calendar. With just a few weeks into the WatchDOGS pro-gram we can tell that it is and will con-tinue to be a great success. Every dad that has participated so far and acted as a WatchDOG has thoroughly en-joyed it and said that it was one of the best ways to spend a day off. We have also had some retired grandfathers sign up and work a day at the school as a WatchDOG. The students can’t wait to find out who the WatchDOGS are every day. They seek out and look forward to having the WatchDOGS around.

Bledsoe Elementary PTA In January, Bledsoe families partici-pated in Science Night. Close to 300 students, siblings and parents enjoyed various experiments ranging from con-ducting a charge with a battery to mir-ror reflections for symmetry to building various structures. Teachers selected the experiments and guided the stu-dents through their discoveries. We thank our staff and teachers for stay-ing late and again making education fun!

In February, Bledsoe held our 3rd an-nual Sock Hop. Due to the overwhelm-ing success of our Fall fundraiser, Boosterthon, the Bledsoe PTA was able to fund this as a free food event! DJ, tattoos, glow sticks, glow rings, photo booth all provided entertainment. We were excited by the large turnout and a great time was had by all! Special

Our thanks to Emily Vaile, our Cultural Arts Chair, and Brenda Richard for a rewarding and worthwhile event. Upcoming events include Spring Fling, Field Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, Lifetime Membership Award, Spirit Nights all leading up to the end of the school year!

Boals Elementary PTA The Boals Elementary PTA is proud to announce the arrival of our very own cookbook! Included are a wide vari-ety of delicious recipes submitted by teachers, parents, students and Mary M. Boals herself! This cookbook is a wonderful addition to any kitchen and it makes a great gift as well. Support the Boals PTA and get one for only $12.00. You’ll be glad you did!

Bright Elementary PTA We Rocked Around the Clock at Bright’s 6th Annual Sock Hop!

Our 6th annual Sock Hop was a huge success! Dancing, music, pizza, cot-ton candy, cupcake walk, memory photos, basket raffle, silent auc-tion….Just a few of things that made the big night so much fun for every-one. Heartfelt thanks go out to all of our volunteers, teachers, and spon-sors who made the night possible. From those parents who solicited do-nations for our silent auction and those put together our baskets to the staff, parents, high school, and middle school volunteers who served up the pizza and ice cream floats – we could-n’t have done it without you! To all the parents and staff who donated items for our baskets and silent auc-tion – you’re the Best! To all of our sponsors who so generously gave – thank you for your generosity. We are keeping our poodle skirts and penny loafers ready for next year’s Sock Hop!

Corbell Elementary PTA Corbell PTA is always Groovin. The room parents put together such fes-tive Valentine’s Day celebrations for our children. It was fun to watch them play games, be crafty and enjoy all the sweets. The Nominating Committee was busy gathering nominations for next years Executive Board. All of our current officers will be greatly missed as they will be rezoned to the new Elementary school, Purefoy. The Watch Dog program is off to a great start and the students love to see the Dads helping throughout the day at school.

One of the more exciting events that took place was the Corbell Book Festi-val. Barnes & Noble at Stonebriar

hosted a book signing for our very own principal, David Weymeyer. He wrote a book, Just Waiting for the Bell. His intriguing and exciting sto-ries of his personal experiences as an educator. Many students lined up to get their personalized copy. The stu-dents of Corbell provided the fabulous artwork that was displayed during the event. Children enjoyed crafts games and story time with one of our kinder-garten teachers, Ms. Thompson. Cor-bell’s Art department will benefit from the sales that were made during the weekend event.

Elliott Elementary PTA Creative stars shine bright deep in the hearts of Elliott Elementary when many of our students submitted great work for Reflections this year. We were proud to recognize all the stu-dents that submitted entries for the contest at our Awards Ceremony dur-ing the January 22nd Elliott Live. Big Balloon Canyon came to Elliott! The gym was taken over by a giant replica of one of Earth’s major land-form, a canyon complete with a wa-terfall! The kids participated in hands on activities to learn about erosion, deposition, weathering, and much, much more.

Elliott’s PTA presented Mrs. Murphy with a check for $9,000 raised through Boosterthon Fun Run held in the fall. The money will be used to enhance the education of every child, in every way.

Elliott 1st Annual Chili

Cookoff Was held on, Feb 18, in the Elliott Cafeteria with the Dads as the cooks, and families as the judges. What a great fam-

ily fun event with hot dogs, chili, drinks and cookies.

Also, in February, Elliott promoted another phone book recycling contest, which turned out to be a huge suc-cess. The City of McKinney provided any school within the McKinney city limits 40 daffodils for beautification efforts. The program is called "Daffodils for Schools". We accepted the bulbs, and planted them in Janu-ary. Be on the lookout for these as they bloom in the front flowerbeds and around the trees at Elliott! "The program was inspired by "The Daffodil Principal”, Gene Bauer. Ms Bauer gave California a remarkable legacy by planting 1,000,000 bulbs along an ob-scure mountainside, one bulb at a time, over a 50+ year span. The story motivated us to 'cultivate' our own little legacy for McKinney.

Lastly, now that the weather is finally warming up and spring is in the air, we are looking forward to Elliott’s Spring Book Fair in March. We kicked off the New Year with a great start and before we know it, FISD will be celebrating the end of 2010 school year.

Fisher Elementary PTA February has been a very busy month for Fisher Elementary. We had a very successful Book Fair in spite of the snow. The book fair earnings will make it possible for Mrs. Honaker to purchase $4395.16 in new books and she will have an extra $4672.04 to be spent on other Scholastic products for the library as well as for the class-rooms. Also during the week of Book Fair our student council had a Y-tie fundraiser. They raised $1,315.00 dollars to be used for the Hohoe Or-phanage in Hohoe, Ghana. The money will be used to purchase 8 desks that seat 2-3 children, and for art supplies and musical instruments. Ms. Allen (Fisher Art teacher) will be traveling

Also during the month of February, Fisher held a Blood Drive which had a 73% success rate as well as its second shoe drive benefitting Haiti. Over 250 pairs of wonderfully usable shoe were do-nated. Way to go Fisher Families!

Pink Elementary PTA Hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Spring Break! I know the kids enjoyed it and of course the teachers and staff! Now, it’s back to wrapping up the remainder of the school year and have a little fun too!

Book Fair Diner-All You Can Read, February 8-12th was a huge success! Despite the snowy weather and school closing, Pink’s parents and the kids support lead to another profitable book fair! The kids were also asked to donate loose change for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. We are proud that close to $1,500 was collected and will be going to Haiti in order to pur-chase new books. Good work Pink students!!!

The Pink Watch D.O.G.S. program is in full swing! The Dad’s are stepping up in droves to come volunteer their time. The teach-ers, as well as the kids, have nothing but won-derful things to say about all the extra support and help!

PTA is gearing up to host the annual Western Hoedown on March 26th! The students look forward each year to see what we have new in store. Bounce houses, bake sale, music, food and games galore await the fan-tastic families of Pink Elementary! A fun way to say “Thanks” for all of their support and great kids!

Riddle Elementary PTA

Riddle Elementary PTA is trying some-thing different with class parties this year. Each party is planned by a committee that is made up of room parents across all grade levels. We are taking advantage of bulk pricing for snacks and treats and taking the responsibility of purchasing those items off of each grade level lead. The parties have been arranged so that there are options for parents with more than one child at Riddle. The Winter Snow Ball was held during spe-cials times in the café so that class-rooms were not disturbed and parents could attend more than one party that day. The Valentines parties were similar in every classroom at 2:00 in the afternoon. The children ex-changed Valentines with their friends, ate a snack and wrote cards to service members away from home. Our end of year parties will take place at the same time for all grades but there will be different stations for all students with activities that may include water play, snacks, autographing yearbooks, and games. The goal of these changes has been to make the job of room parent easier and to provide variety for the students and parents. The feedback from parents so far has been positive. We have to admit that we borrowed the idea for the Snow Ball from another school. It was huge hit with students, parents, and teach-ers. This summer we will evaluate what worked and make a plan for next year.

Shawnee Trail Elementary PTA

Shawnee Trail Elementary celebrated our tenth anniversary in February with a great party organized by staff and PTA. Principal, Sherri Wakeland presented awards to ten-year teachers and wel-comed special visitors back for the eve-ning.

Nearly everyone participated in a cake-walk and the kids and adults all loved dancing in the cafeteria.

Sparks Elementary PTA What does a Million look like?

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Walker's class at Sparks Elementary want to know what a million looks like. So stu-dents and families are pitching in to show them exactly that. The students are collecting soda pop tabs and have accumulated over 100,000 since the beginning of the year.

They will continue to collect the tabs until they reach a million. Once the one million goal is reached the tabs will be donated to Ronald McDonald House.

Taylor Elementary PTA

Our PTA never seems to slow down! January was busy mainly with our Olympic Themed Dance and Silent Auction Planning -- which was an overwhelming success -- plus a story-teller came to the school for a presen-tation to all of the students. Also, Reflection results were announced and the artwork was displayed in the school's hallway display cases. In February, the PTA sponsored half of the PE Roller-skating Program for 3rd-5th graders. Our Roller-skating night at Thunderbird was scheduled for the same night as the record snow fall, so has been post-ponned until after Spring Break. Parents, students and staff are ready to skate! The PTA hosted the Valentine Classroom Parties, and sponsored our Spring Book Fair with an Art Night one evening of the event. Another activity the PTA has been in-volved with is 'gifting' $100 to each grade-level class and specials class for educational supplies. An additional $50 was gifted to each FA, TLC and Resource class. The staff has been busy surfing websites and flipping through catalogues to spend their al-lotment. Orders for scholastic books, educational games, dry erase boards, puzzles, music instruments, and much more were placed and have since been delivered to the staff. It was ap-preciated by all -- teachers and stu-dents!

Clark Middle PTA

The Clark Middle School PTA is gear-ing up next year already. We have been collecting nominations for the 2010-2011 school year and the nomi-nations committee will soon be mak-ing recommendations to the board.

This year Clark celebrated White Rib-

bon Week which celebrates our na-tion's schools in providing a suppor-tive and quality education to a diverse student population, especially those students with disabilities and those from culturally and linguistically di-verse backgrounds. Griffin Middle PTA

In January, the Griffin PTA purchased 90 pig hearts for the science depart-ment. The 7th grade students got to dissect a heart during their science class.

Remember the great snow of Febru-ary 11? The Griffin PTA hosted bagels and coffee for the teachers and staff that day! We were glad that the schools remained open that day!!! Otherwise what would we have done with 140 bagels! It was a huge suc-cess on a cold and damp day!

Griffin Middle School hosted its 6th annual ‘Griffin’s Got Talent Show-case’ on March 1st 2010. A variety of 20 acts including 3 teachers and 31 students!! There was singing, danc-ing, a variety of instruments played and even 2 students unicycling on stage at the same time! It was a fun filled family evening and the students proved to everyone who attended that GRIFFIN HAS A LOT OF TALENT!
