and chimes in with negative comments, realize that he/she is nevertheless at the Seder. Treat all with respect and sweet encouragement and eventually all will come to find meaning and a sense of belonging.

Of course, a little Passover review and preparation can help make that Seder a fabulous success. Therefore, we’ll have a Passover review and preparation class at Lunch & Learn on April 7.

Susan joins me in wishing you and your loved ones a joyous and meaningful Passover, Chag Pesach Sameiach,

Rabbi Rick Rheins

Reform Judaism embraces the fact that each of us has both individual autonomy as well as a personal connection to our Jewish heritage and faith. What for some religious or ideological movements is an unsustainable contradiction is for Reform Judaism a celebration of each person’s unique complexity. The late, great theologian Rabbi Dr. Eugene Borowitz referred to the tension between our autonomous selves and our identity as a part the Jewish family as a dialectic. The very name “Reform Judaism” contains the essence of that dialectic. It expresses the dynamic of change in the context of our Jewish religious and cultural identity. As Borowitz taught: “We can reform because we assert our autonomy, where necessary, against Jewish tradition and, where desirable, in support of our creativity; yet we are part of Judaism in an equally deep and rooted way. In all our individuality we know ourselves to stand in relation to the God of historic Jewish experience as part of the people of Israel” (Reform Judaism Today, p. 132).

Perhaps no experience captures that exquisite tension more than the Passover Seder. We sit together just as Jewish families have for thousands of years and yet we are urged to feel as if each of us went personally out of Egypt. We recite time honored passages from the Haggadah, but also are invited to share new and personal insights. We sample both the sweet and the bitter. We recall the oppression of servitude and the joy of freedom. We feast on a sumptuous spread, but eat with it matzah, the bread of affliction. Even the question of the Rasha, the “wicked” or “cynical” child, contains the complexity of that tension: “What is this service to you?”

From one point of view, the question is impertinence. The question seems to mock and belittle our beloved ancient Passover ritual. On the other hand, the Torah itself anticipates such a question and does so without judgement: “And when your children ask you, ‘What is this service to you?’ you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to Adonai, because God passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when God smote the Egyptians, but our homes were saved” (Exodus 12: 26-27).

Far from being “wicked,” one who asks sincere questions fulfills the highest ideals of the Seder. Our questions help us find that balance between our individuality and our connection to the group.

And what about the one who asks questions with a mocking sneer? Respond with gentle patience, as it is written in the Talmud: “Even if for the wrong reason, eventually it will be for the right reason” (Pesachim 50b). Meaning, even if one comes to the Seder with a bit of an attitude

April 7, 14 & 28Note that we will not have class on April 21COME TO LEARN, DISCUSS, DEBATE, AND

MEET FRIENDSApril 7: Rabbi Rick Rheins will lead a review and discussion of the laws of Passover and strategies for a successful Passover Seder. April 14: Cantor Nesis will lead Lunch & Learn.April 28: Rabbi Susan Rheins will lead a discussion called: “Women Count When Counting the Omer.” Come to learn, discuss, debate, and meet friends

Newcomers quickly and easily fit right in!

Chametz is food made from leavened grain. In the Torah it is written: “Seven days you shall eat matzah; on the very first day you shall remove leaven from your houses...” (Exodus 12:15). The Rabbis specified five grains which can become chametz: wheat, barley, spelt, rye and oats. Products from these grains cannot be eaten during Pesach unless the flour produced from them is mixed with water and cooked within an 18-minute period.

Many Rabbinic authorities in Eastern Europe (Ashkenazi) added to the list of restricted foods. They forbade rice and legumes (these are called kitniyot and include beans, peas, lentils, and corn). Sephardic authorities prohibit only the five specified grains, thus Sephardic Jews are allowed to eat legumes and rice during Passover. Conservative and Reform Rabbinic authorities encourage each family to establish its own custom concerning the eating of rice and legumes. However, Jews of all denominations strictly avoid eating leavened products from the five grains.

On the days before Pesach, the house is thoroughly cleaned and chametz is gathered. The final “search” for chametz should be conducted the evening before Passover. On the morning of Passover, the last remaining pile of chametz is destroyed. The prayers to be recited are found at the front of most Passover Haggadot. The essential declaration is as follows:

“Any chametz which is in my possession which I did or did not see, which I did or did not remove, shall be nullified and become ownerless, like the dust of the earth.”

But if grain products are forbidden, how can we eat matzah seeing that it is made from grain?

Of course, matzah is made from grain. However, the wheat and flour for matzah is not given a chance to rise. Thus, it is essential that the grain

used for making Passover matzah be kept perfectly dry. Once the flour for matzah has been mixed with water it must be put in the oven and baked within 18 minutes. After the baking, matzah can then be ground into meal and soaked in liquid for as long as you want.

Why is peanut oil permitted while peanuts are not?

Peanut oil is considered Kosher for Passover because it isn’t absolutely certain that peanuts are forbidden. Halakhic authorities maintain that peanuts are not kitniyot (see above) and that Ashkenazic Jews abstain from them simply on the basis of minhag (i.e. “custom”). So while peanuts are off-limits for Ashkenazic Jews, peanut derivatives are permitted. There are differences of opinion concerning peanut butter. Some consider it like peanuts, others say it is more like oil. As my teacher Dr. Mark Washofsky says: “Spread it on matzah and you take your chances... in more ways than one!”

Ask Rabbi Rheins:It is a mitzvah to remove chametz from our homes before Passover. But what is chametz?

Does Your Child Turn 13 in 2017 or 2018?Don’t Worry!

B’nei Mitzvah 2017 and 2018 Date Selection Request Forms are still AVAILABLE!

It is never too late to have our children experience the life-affirming joy and pride of accomplishment by leading a service as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Each year, around 50 students become Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Temple Sinai. In 2016 we have over 60 students and the 2017 and 2018 are also filling up quickly! Still, we’ll always do our best to find room for your child!

Know that our clergy work personally with each student and his/her family to help create a memorable celebration that will bring a lifetime of blessings.

If you have a child who will turn 13 (or older) in 2017 or 2018 and you do not yet have a reserved date for a service, please call our Temple Sinai office and we’ll answer all your questions and help you find a date that works for your family.

Date selection request forms also are available in the Temple Sinai office and can be mailed directly to you.

YOM HASHOAH, Holocaust Memorial Service at

Temple Sinai: Monday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m.

This year we will honor the memory of the victims of the Shoah, the Holocaust, at a unique service on Monday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. We will share prayers, meditations, and presentations that recall the tragedy of the Holocaust and pay tribute to the survivors, as well as hear the testimony of a survivor. At this years’ service, Holocaust survivors will speak and their families will be invited up to light memorial candles. Religious School students who have been studying the Holocaust also will participate.

To help each of us to express a memorial to the victims and to shine a light against the darkness of evil, Temple Sinai Brotherhood is providing special Holocaust Yahrzeit candles for Temple Sinai families.

Our act of remembering is important because the number of Holocaust survivors is diminishing with each passing day. As we lose this precious link, those who deny or minimize the Holocaust gain strength. Sadly, too many have little or no knowledge about the Holocaust. They are ripe for the revisionist history.

The cost of the candles has been underwritten by generous members and businesses so that every contribution you make to the candle project will go 100% to the Temple Sinai Israel Study Tour (IST) fund. Through IST, thousands of students have visited Auschwitz and Israel in order to learn more deeply about the tragedy of the Holocaust and the ultimate victory of the Jewish people with the birth of modern Israel. Temple Sinai currently contributes at least $1,000 to each graduating Confirmation student to help reduce the cost of IST for our participating families. Your generous contribution will enable us to continue to offer these scholarships.Be sure to pick up your Yom HaShoah Holocaust

Cards are available in the main office for purchase. Each time someone reloads their King Soopers card, 5% will be donated back to the Temple. The cards can be reloaded with cash, credit/debit cards or check. Please consider participating in this easy, ongoing project. It has proven to be successful. To all of you who have been actively supporting this fundraiser, thank you! I hope you will continue your support by reloading your cards every trip to King Soopers. The stunning stained glass windows that adorn our Abrahams Family Chapel were recently dedicated. If you have not seen these magnificent glass masterpieces, may I suggest stopping by to “kvell.” We have much to be proud of.May 14th at 6:30 p.m. is our Annual Event to be held at the greatest venue in the city - yes, our very own Temple Sinai! If able, please attend. The great entertainment, fabulous silent and live auctions, delicious food and most importantly a fun evening with our Temple community will be one night to remember. Winter is over, (hopefully) no snow (maybe a little!), more sunshine, longer days of daylight and a refreshing outlook that spring is here! Please take time to connect with your Temple community and enjoy all we have to offer together.I wish all of you a sweet Pesach! L’Shalom,

My Dear Temple Sinai FamilyIt is with great excitement that I return to you all after taking much needed time to be home with my son

Solomon. These were months of profound transformation for me: getting to know my son, and discovering my husband and myself as parents. My life was shaken not only by the miracle of motherhood, but also by the mystery of death. My mother Mirta left this world too soon, but I keep her close to my heart and thoughts, and hope to be to my son Solomon at least half the mother she was to me. I return to you very much as the same person that left, yet different because of these life experiences. I pray and hope they will allow me to better understand and accompany all of you through your lives celebrations and challenges.

More than anything, I return to you with a deeper sense of community. We live in a time when synagogue life is constantly challenged. Many times people feel left out, not finding their place, not feeling connected enough to others within the community. I’ve been blessed with so many of you reaching out and wanting to make sure to be there for me and my family, both in the happiness and the sorrow: choir members, minyan regulars, Thursday’s Lunch & Learn regulars, Religious School families, B’nei Mitzvah families, those who come regularly for Friday worship, those who come monthly to pray for healing. You where there for me as a community, as I know you have done before for so many others. This is the greatest blessing and motivation I have, as I now return to you: to partner with you to continue to be the caring and loving community that Sinai is, opening its arms to embrace in times of sorrow and need, and lifting up its cup of wine and joy in times of celebration. Because this is what we do as Jews! We come together when someone is in need, and we come together in celebration. We have done so for thousands of years, and we will continue doing it, in community, for generations to come.

I look forward to reconnecting with you in song, prayer and learning in the months to come!

Mental Wellness Matters presents:

A Place At The Table For Everyone

with Rabbi Rick RheinsMonday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m.

At Passover we gather as friends and family and retell the story of our people’s journey from oppression to freedom. All of life’s experiences are represented in the Seder: the bitter and the sweet, the bullies and the heroes, the set-backs and the achievements. Most tellingly, we are gathered together to symbolize that our personal story is a vital part of our family and communal legacy.

Our Mental Wellness journey also has ups and downs, challenges and successes. At Temple Sinai’s next Mental Wellness program, Rabbi Rheins will lead a discussion at which we will share our stories, hear inspiring insights, learn from each other and realize that, like our ancestors, journeying through the wilderness can indeed lead to the blessings of a hoped for and promised destination.

Please consider joining us and adding to the discussion. You will be with friends in a supportive and confidential setting. No RSVP needed and all are welcome!

From Rabbi Susan...Next Year in Jerusalem!

Sweeter than macaroons, more satisfying than any decadent Passover dessert, and undoubtedly more palatable than the afikomen are the mellifluous words we speak each year at the conclusion of the Pesach seder: L’shanah Ha-ba’ah Birushalayim, Next Year in Jerusalem! Throughout history, this phrase has reflected an integral connection between the Jewish people and our ancestral homeland in Eretz Yisrael, the Land of Israel. This Passover, I encourage you to turn this ancient dream into your personal reality, to declare with passion, fervor, and boundless excitement: Next year, I’m going to Israel!

I am pleased to announce that registration now is open for the 2017 Temple Sinai Israel Adventure! Scheduled for June 13-25, 2017, this tour is perfect for families and adults of all ages.

Join Rick, me and other Temple Sinai members as we explore sacred places that glow with inspiring spirituality, as we uncover historic sites where our ancestors lived, and as we encounter vibrant communities that demonstrate the miracle of the modern ingathering of Jews from all over the world. Michelle Schwartz Director of

Religious School Education

Our Youth

Religious School NewsAs Passover approaches and we begin planning for our classes in both the preschool and Religious School,

we find ourselves sorting through cute craft after craft representing the 10 plagues. The cutest of them all, frogs! They look so happy and playful in every project, but if we stop to think about it, why choose frogs to teach about Passover? Aren’t the plagues one of most terrible things that happened to the people of Egypt?

Perhaps it all began with an easy way to teach our kids about the holiday. After all, we are commanded to retell the story of the Exodus every year. We maybe needed some ways to make the Seder family friendly and more fun to keep everyone at the table for so long and the easiest way to do that was through the plagues. We could make masks, finger puppets, plagues on a stick and, of course, jumping frogs on the table. I would like to think it wasn’t an attempt at glorifying the suffering of the Egyptian people, but a symbol representing a bigger picture.

Frogs go through a great change in their metamorphosis from tadpole to adult and the Jewish people went through a great change at this time too, from slaves to a free people. Those little frogs raining from the sky played an essential role in moving the story forward. They caused Pharaoh to harden his heart and refuse to let the Israelites go from Egypt. They made the people afraid of what would come next and tried to push for change right now. Pharaoh didn’t listen and brought more suffering to his people before realizing he must change his mind and set the people free. I hope this year as we see the frogs on the table they symbolize many things for us. I hope they can help us take a leap ahead to a year filled with change, love, forgiveness and connection to those around us.

Hi. I am Jack Spiegel and I went to the JYG Chavurah in St. Louis, Missouri.JYG was an amazing experience for me! There was so much to do and so

many new friends to meet. There are mixers, rotations, and most of all lots and lots of ruach. The mixers are just rotations where you learn about all of the NFTY Missouri Valley chants and songs. I encourage everyone who can do NFTY to do it. It is an amazing experience!

If you have been to Temple recently, you probably noticed the massive amount of fencing all along Hampden and the west side of the parking lot. This feels like a huge milestone--there's no going back now! The contract with JHL Construction and the loan documents have all been signed and permits are in the works. The construction trailer was delivered and they will now start prepping the area.

We will be posting pictures and updates regularly on our Facebook page as the project progresses. If you "Like" us, you will get the most up-to-date information.

Go to: https://www.facebook.com/SinaiDenver or use this QR code:

Please note that access to Temple from Hampden will be closed for the duration of the project. Please enter from Glencoe Street.

We would NOT have reached this time if we did not have such a generous, supportive congregation. On behalf of the Board, the BOF Committee and the Staff, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
