The Protocol Edition

Ever wonder about certain yacht club etiquette but were reluctant to ask? Protocol (sometimes confused

with Port O’ Call depending on how many Dark n’ Stormys one has consumed) is defined as “the accepted or

established code of procedure or behavior in any group, organization or situation”. It’s an

historical, traditional and important aspect of any club. The common thread of this issue is

protocol, to assist our members, new and longtime, in maximizing their enjoyment and expe-

rience at the Club. This edition is sprinkled with proper protocol when visiting reciprocal

yacht clubs, appropriate boat fender etiquette, and the importance of carrying your MYC

membership card and signing guests in when at the Club, among other things. Enjoy!

A s I write this letter, August is wrapping up with a flurry of activity rang-

ing from the Junior Sailing Banquet which marks the end of another

successful program year to the Club Cruise in Essex. The heart of the sum-

mer season has come and gone but we have many offerings lined up for

late summer and early fall. Please be sure to give The Rudder a good read to

make sure that you do not miss out.

This edition of The Rudder focuses on Club protocol, rules and culture. If

you get a moment, please re-familiarize yourself with the House Rules which

begin on page 60 of the Club Yearbook. These rules have been adopted

over the years, by the House Committee and the Board of Directors, to en-

sure that the Club both complies with state law that controls private clubs

and that all members have a welcoming experience.

While most members do their best to abide by the House Rules, it is always a good idea to periodi-

cally review them, as they are updated occasionally. Also, please understand that with many new

team members, it is important to identify yourself as a member and to introduce your guests.

Finally, many believe that September brings the best weather of the year, so let’s enjoy.

2017 MYC Club Cruise and Rendezvous

Over 60 members attended the 2017 MYC Island Sunset Party at the annu-al Club Cruise and Rendezvous Saturday evening, August 19th at Brewer Essex Island Marina in Essex. MYC was represented by 15 boats at the marina and nearly 25 members participated in the Gilligan’s Island Cos-tume Contest. Several members drove up for the event. Steel Dreams pro-vided Caribbean steel drum music and there was fun, food, drink, Island Jack t-shirts, giveaways and merriment for all. A 2017 MYC Club Cruise and Rendezvous Commemorative Photo Album is available free in pdf for-mat. To request a copy, email Bud Franke at [email protected].

NautiWords Windlass—A windlass is a winch, usually employed for weighing an-

chor, that has a horizontal barrel or barrels. Many yacht windlasses have

two barrels: a smooth one with flanges for hauling on rope, known as a

gypsy, and another with recesses for links of chain, known as a wildcat.

A capstan, on the other hand, has a vertical barrel that, in bygone days,

was turned by spikes fitted horizontally into holes around its head.

Member Spotlight: Jean Foley

Jean Foley is an MYC treasure. She and hus-band, Tim, married almost 60 years, joined the Club in 1970. Jean taught first and second grade at the old Central Grammar School and Orange Avenue School in Milford for 24 years. She and Tim raised five children at the Club, with the Fo-ley clan active in swimming and sailing. Today, those kids are grown, and son Paul re-mains a member. Jean and Tim have seven grandchildren, including Mary Foley, an accom-plished sailor and Junior Instructor in the MYC program. Jean and Tim winter in Florida and during the summer, may be found aboard Day-star, their C & C 27 sailboat. Jean is a master gardener and a longstanding member of the MYC Garden and Grounds Committee, responsi-ble for the beautiful flora around the Club. She also designs and maintains the gardens for Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, Florida. If that’s not enough, Jean leads the MYC water aerobics group on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. We are proud to spotlight Jean Foley!

MYC’s Nell Moll Named Distinguished Citizen

Milford Mayor Benjamin G. Blake presented MYC’s own

Nell Moll with the first Milford Distinguished Citizen

Award at the State of the City Address held July 27th at

the Club. Reading a procla-

mation, Mayor Blake said,

“Nell Moll has provided out-

standing civic service to the

community of Milford over

many decades,” and “her

devotion to Milford extends

beyond her call of duty”.

“Nell is known for the abil-

ity to connect the right peo-

ple to the perfect charity to

support, the best mechanic

for car repair, the finest

local eatery for an enjoya-

ble evening, and even the

ideal business partner for a lifetime of success and pros-

perity”. Nell, who is Director of Membership, Opportunity

and Enthusiasm for the Milford Regional Chamber of

Commerce, was also the 2017 Milford St. Patrick’s Day

Parade Grand Marshal. We proudly congratulate Nell!

Colors: An MYC Tradition

Every evening at sunset, the American flag is ceremo-

niously lowered from the Club’s flagpole gaff, after a

booming cannon blast. When “Colors!” is announced,

Club members and guests are expected to stand si-

lently, facing in the direction of the flag until it is fully

lowered and taken from the halyard. An officer will

announce “As You Were”, at which time members

may resume activity and discussion. We ask that you

respectfully honor and celebrate this reverent and

patriotic Club tradition..

Membership Cards and Guest Sign-In

To ensure an enjoyable experience for all, members

are asked to present their membership card and

credit cards to servers and bar staff when ordering.

Further, as required by Connecticut Liquor Commis-

sion regulations, members must sign in all guests up-

on entry into the clubhouse, including full name, ad-

dress and host member. Members may not leave

their guests unattended. Your cooperation is greatly

appreciated.

Uh Oh, Here Comes Nevo!

Past Commodore John Nevin is on a fender bender this month, reminding our

boating members not only to haul in their fenders when departing the harbor

but also to properly stow them when making way. Nevin, a longstanding mem-

ber of the Fender and Rubrail Technicians Society (F.A.R.T.S.) blustered, “As

an old F.A.R.T., I cannot overstate the importance of proper fender deploy-

ment, retraction and stowage. A vessel leaving the harbor with fenders dan-

gling is an abomination. In fact, I encourage our mariners to enroll in an excel-

lent course, Boat Fenders 101: Whoopie Cushions of the Sea, offered by the

Fender and Rubrail Technicians University (U.F.A.R.T.). This class delves into

the intricacies of inflatable boat fenders and lazarette stowage”. Additional

fender etiquette may be found at www.crazypastcommodores.com.

Proper Protocol When Visiting a Reciprocal Yacht Club

Frequently, our members visit other yacht clubs around the country and the world while traveling. If you haven’t done this, it is a very enjoya-

ble experience and it’s an inherent member benefit of belonging to a club. However, it’s important to know that there’s a generally accepted

protocol between reciprocal yacht clubs when visiting. Here are four simple steps to make your visit memorable:

1) Contact the club you are planning to visit to find out if they are reciprocal with Milford Yacht Club. Most clubs are, but a few aren’t. If

the other club is not familiar with MYC, let them know that MYC is a full-service club with a marina, founded in 1903, and MYC is not a

“paper club”. For their reference, our website is www.milfordyachtclub.com. Also, let them know when you might be visiting.

2) Once you’ve confirmed that the club is reciprocal, contact the MYC Office ([email protected]) to obtain a Letter of Good

Standing at least two weeks before your visit. Present this letter, along with your MYC membership card, to the reciprocal club staff

upon your arrival.

3) Remember when visiting a reciprocal club, you are an ambassador of Milford Yacht Club and a guest of the reciprocal club. Be sure to

obey the reciprocal club’s dress code and house rules.

4) As a gesture, you may wish to present the reciprocal club with an MYC burgee to hang in their clubhouse. This is an optional tradition,

it’s not required. Burgees are available for purchase through the MYC office. Contact [email protected]

“Hey! My buddy! Swanson, full steam

ahead! Over there! I wanna go over there!”
