  • june 2010 Its June already holy shit it seems like I just

wrote Januarys article, well when you get as old as me time flys when youre having fun. Speaking of fun, I would like to give a big KUDOS to St. Charles Harley Davidson. I was on vacation the week they held their calendar search for Miss May and Miss June for 2011, so I decided to take a ride over and check it out. And HOLY SHIT I am I glad I did. First off I get invited to everything this magazines involved in, but between work and other endeavors. Im not able to make most; in fact I know this was my first event so I was excited to get to get out and have a good time. And Im happy to say a few folks recognized me, just so happens one was my cousin George Hermann. Hey cuz! Anyway I met some awesome folks and the staff couldnt have been any nicer. I tried to get a lot of photos but the camera I took from the house went dead, not to mention it was pink. Yea I know what the F$%# is wrong with me for taking a pink camera to a calendar girl search?!? Well to be honest, I was running late called to find out where a small camera was and , well never mind like you really give a F%$# anyway.

Well I got there around 6:30 the F#$@ing place was packed! I mean there was every kind of bike and riders you could think of, and probably a hundred cars and folks were still rolling in. And the women HOLY SHIT they were everywhere it was definitely worth the trip. And did I mention ice cold aluminum bottles of your favorite beverages, and get this only 3 bucks a piece, and wings from hot shots. So after a few cold beers and WWW.MIDAMERICAHD.COM

The Barons are a beer-drinking bar band that plays East Coast Oi! for punks, skins, metalheads, freaks, weirdos or anyone who likes to down a tasty pint in the name of good -time rock and roll. Formed in 2005, we hit the road in early 2006 on a quest to sample the beer selection at every dive bar from Baltimore to New York and leave the good people well-rocked.

In 2007 we released our first vinyl offering called Party On 45 from German label Dim Records and followed that up in 2008 with our debut full length CD American Beer Drinking Songs on New Yorks Motherbox Records. We recently released Volume 2 of a series we co-produce on our own Neck Records imprint called Oi! dont pay the bills!, which were quite proud of because we always get together a bunch of friends who contribute some great music. Thats what its all about anyway, right? Good friends, good times.CHEERS!

We began in the summer of 2008 with Sebastardo, Basstard and Raffi. We played some good shows in the area Koblenz-Neuwied-Boon. In the summer 2009, we recorded our demo with Wally (Toxoplasma). Nevertheless, drummer Raffi got out and with Wagner a worthy substitute was found. After a long practice break it was played with our new drummer along with new songs at some great concerts with Hasselhff (Bonn)-Kotzreiz (Berlin) and Sore-losers (Freiburg). This summer we go again into the studio and of course there will be many live-concerts! Discography:Straight to Jail - Demo -CD

Historically, motorcycle transportation has always been less comfortable than in a car. Since the advent of air ride suspension, progressive shocks, and gel seats, it is possible to feel as pampered on your scoot as in your cage. This blurs the line between riding a bike and simply driving a machine with half the wheels. Motorcycles with a rigid frame, also known as hardtails, have gotten an unfair reputation for being spleen-pounding kidney-killers. However, hardtails have advantages, and there are tricks to making the ride more enjoyable.

Yes, there are advantages to riding a hardtail! The first is instant throttle response. All drag racing bikes are hardtails because they do not have time to waste compressing the suspension when accelerating. The second advantage is reduced weight, not only from ditching the shocks or air bags and compressor, but also all the extra weight in frame tubing needed to put all that gear to work. The third advantage is reduced maintenance effort. Hardtails have no suspension points to lubricate, and chains are easier to adjust without having to allow for suspension travel. The biggest advantage to riding a hardtail is feeling the road. Sure, the bike is going to bounce you around a bit more, but I call that invigorating! I feel like it stirs the soul, awakening me to the reality of where I am and what Im doing. That being said, there is an art to riding a hardtail and arriving at your destination without blood in your stool!

The most important way to help make your trip on a hardtail more enjoyable is to adjust your seating position. Leaning forward will put your back out of harms way. Leaning forward means when you hit bumps in the road, your seats upward motion will rock you forward rather than compressing your spine. Mid controls can help as well, because when you position your feet underneath you, you can quickly use your legs as shock absorbers as you approach a massive crater in the road ahead. For long trips, you will want a comfortable seat that gets you down in the bike but eliminates pressure points, and a set of highway pegs so you can switch your leg position from time to time. Finally, remember that any tires rated pressure is a warning of its maximum pressure. If your bike is lighter than the maximum load rating of the tire then you do not need to run the maximum tire pressure. You may be able to run with a tire pressure five p.s.i. lower than the maximum and pick up a little suspension from the tire. Be careful not to take out too much pressure though, this can cause instability when cornering.

  • A fter I complained about the gray and ice and cold for the last few winters, I made a bold statement to my family threatening to ride out of Missouri in the first week of February. I was bound for the warm desert of southern Arizona and California. When Christmas rolled around and my present from Rita was a 0-degree sleeping bag, I knew it was time to step away from the wood stove and walk the walk.

THE PLAN:Ride a well-used 2001 HD Electra Glide Standard loaded with camping

gear from Olean, Missouri to Yuma, Arizona. I wanted to explore the area, free camping and soak up the sun. My goal was to avoid motels and restaurants and not get in a hurry. I planned to ride no more than 300 miles per day, except on the way home. Depart Olean on February 3 and return sometime the first week of March.

THE ROUTE:I would travel secondary roads when possible. In order to avoid a

storm on the plains I rode south to Austin, Texas then went west to Yuma.

THE LOGISTICS:Because of financial restraints this trip would have to be a minimalist

escape. After all, I was going for the sun and warmth not the comfort of cushy motels and fat restaurants. The load of camping gear, food, clothing, tools, compressor and two gallons of water took many adjustments before I felt comfortable. The bike service of all fluid changes, new tires, cam service and other needed maintenance kept me busy as the departure date drew near.

THE RESULTS:I rode three very cold, rainy days to get to the desert and three cold

days to get back home. The days camping in Arizona and California were comfortable. The average daytime temperature high was 70 degrees and the nighttime low was 45 degrees.

    THE NUMBERS:Days: 30Total Miles: 5504Fuel: $394.07Groceries: $138.11Motels: $154.25 (four nights total)Camp fees: $41.00Oil and Camp Supplies: $41.27Restaurant: $3.15

(McDonalds Burger & Fries) could have done without that.

TOTAL COST OF TRIP: $771.85CONCLUSION;I had a great time. Since I have lost all affection for the Missouri

winters, this trip is much better for me than my July and August trips of previous years. I particularly enjoyed breakfast and morning coffee while camping. Visiting other campers and their dogs was enjoyable. The equipment held up very well. HD heated gloves are wonderful. I found that the air activated heat packs used by hunters saved me several times on the cold ride. I would put one pack in my shirt pocket in the morning and was amazed at the intense head for eight hours. I am Richard Rose and I am eaten up with motorcycle riding, service and camping. PRODUCT REVIEW

RK Armor has been making some of the latest and greatest innovative motorcycle parts for 3 years now. RK is based right out of St. Louis, so its not only American made, but in this case its locally owned and operated. RK is rapidly growing due to the quality craftsmanship that is put into each individual part. They offer a wide array of bike accessories from swingarm spools, crash cages, subframe cages, rearsets, fairing stays, and now subframes are in the works.

This months product review features RKs swingarm spools and front axle sliders. These components are CNC cut from a lightweight aluminum and get the bike off the ground to pull maintenance while offering additional protection. Another great aspect of the sliders is the inside of the peg is threaded vs. other brands where a nut has to be threaded on to secure the slider. As for the swingarm spools they have large grooves cut into the center of the spool to give a secure lifting area that does not allow the spools to slip off the rear stand. The spools and sliders have stunning textures and come with an affordable price.

Price: Swingarm Spools-$25.00 (hardware included) Front Axle Sliders-$40.00 (hardware included)Contact Info: Ryan Klos- (314)333-9414Email: [email protected]/rk_armor

    FTM Bi-State Area Sales Managers

    JUNE 201044

Well, as we expected this summer is looking to be a busy one for all of us here at FTM. Interest in this magazine just keeps growing. Tracy and I have been running all over the bi-state area and we have had a ball doing it. Its a pretty wild feeling to be in an area we have never been in before and be recognized by people we have never met. It happens a lot and I dont think Tracy or I will ever get used to that part of what we do. We have made so many friends from all over and Im amazed at how Tracy can always put a name with a face. A friend of mine awhile back asked me why I wanted to do a job that required being on the job 24/7. My answer was simple. I have never looked at what we do, as a job. We do this because this is who we are. I am so proud to be able to work side by side with my best friend in this world, my wife Tracy. When she is out among all of you, she tends to shine her brightest and I really enjoy watching it. She may not ride her own bike but she lives, breaths, and eats this lifestyle and handles herself well in it. Always remembering that she is representing FTM, and respecting the trust the owners of this magazine have in us. It takes a lot of time, and dedication to do this but the owners of this magazine have always made us feel that we are just as important as they are when it comes to making FTM happen. We could never imagine working for any other magazine than this one and never would. Its just too much fun setting the bar and waiting to see who copies it first. THATS flattery!!

Now on to upcoming things! Last year Tracy and I had to miss the first ever, Grease, Gears, and Grooves because we were getting married at Shady Jacks. This year, July 3rd we will be there and its going to be even bigger than last years huge success. Col. Kleinhans and friends have outdone themselves again and we cant wait to see it all come together. This is a one of a kind event that you wont want to miss and the entire FTM Army will be on hand with some kick ass event shirts. So look for the FTM Truck and come up and say Hi.

In closing here Id like to thank everyone for helping to make Hot Summer Bike Nights such an overwhelming success! Rain or shine the attendance at this every Thursday night event blows us all away. We are very lucky to have the sponsorship team we have. If you havent come out yet, youre missing out on what everyone is calling the biggest bike night in the Metro area. Its only going to get bigger and better as we go on too! Despite rain, The 3 Bar Boogie is doing very well also thanks to some dedicated riders. I can only imagine how big this could get once we get better weather.

Thanks to everyone for the support, praise, and hellos. Most of all, thanks for being our friends. We are truly blessed!! Jerry and Tracy [email protected], www.jerryandtracy.shutterfly.com

When you live in a small town as I do, sometimes there just arent enough week-night bike events to suit you. You spend most of your week-nights calling up your buddies, maybe cruising to the nearest bar, going on a weekly dinner ride or just spending your night cruising around the area highways enjoying the view. All of this is taken in with the anticipation for the next week-ends rally or bike show.

Therefore, that is why last year we began a monthly cruise-in in the small town of Licking, Mo. This all takes place at the local Sonic Drive-In (junction of hwy. 63 & 32).

Sonic was chosen to help create the 50s ambiance. This is a great opportunity for all of the area bikers to get together, check out the bikes, get acquainted, find some new riding buddies, or get reacquainted with some old ones. Then we added a DJ, some good ole music, & some prizes, which were donated by some of the local merchants. The 1st year had a great response & the feedback was excellent, unfortunately rain put a damper on the last 2 of the season. However, that didnt hurt the 2010 season. The 1st cruise-in brought in bikes from 6 area towns, for a total of 33 bikes. This with the combination of a beautiful sunny evening & lots of friendly faces made for a wonderful time for all. I had the pleasure of visiting with several attending & they expressed what a good time they were having & that they intend to come on back for the next one & bring along some of their friends.

Hopefully, this will be a continually growing event. If any of you ever have the opportunity to join in on the fun, this is held the last Thursday of each month thru September at 6:30pm. I will be there & would love to meet all of you. Just come on by & say Hi!
