The Roman Banquet – emperor’s approachFestive consumption of food and drink was an important social ritual in the Roman world known in general terms as the convivium or banquet.

Public banquets, such as the civic feasts, offered for all of the inhabitants of a city, often accommodated large numbers of diners. In contrast, dinner party that we organize as The Roman banquet – emperor’s approach is similar to the ones that took place in residences and were more private affairs in which the host entertained a small group of friends, family, business associates, and clients.Roman literary sources describe elite private banquets as a kind of feast for the senses, during which the host strove to impress his guests with extravagant food. We are taking you to the Triclinium of the Diocletian’s cellers because the dining room was one of the most important reception areas of the residence.Women were and are permitted to join men .Triclinium or a dining room typically held three broad couches, each of which seated three individuals, thus allowing for a total of nine guests. But our Banquet will fill the entire Triclinium.

A proper Roman dinner included three courses: the hors d’oeuvres (gustatio), the main course (mensae primae), and the dessert (mensae secundae). The food and drink that was served was intended not only to satiate the guests but also to add an element of spectacle to the meal. Exotic produce, particularly those from wild animals, birds, and fish, were favored at elite dinner parties because of their rarity, difficulty of procurement, and consequent high cost, which reflected the host’s affluence. Our dinner will be of the same quality but it will include a seven course meal and wine will be served throughout the meal as an accompaniment to the food. The Romans mixed their wine with water prior to drinking, so can you. The final component of the banquet was its entertainment, which was designed to delight both the eye and ear.

Our Banquet will include performance of the emperor Diocletian who will personaly tell you his life story.

So, be prepared for an unforgotable evening!

Palača cara Dioklecijana Palača nosi ime velikog vladara Rimskog carstva koji je živio između 243. i 316. godine a u povijesti će ostati zapamćen kao prvi car koji se dobrovoljno odrekao prijestolja te se povukao u mirovinu izgradivši rezidenciju upravo na mjestu oko kojeg se kasnije razvio grad Split. Pravim imenom Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocles, rođen je kao sin slobodnog roba i do titule rimskog imperatora i cezara se uzdigao zahvaljujući vojnim uspjesima i svom ratničkom umijeću. Rodom je bio iz obližnje antičke Salone, danas Solina, bio je oženjen Priscom a njegova kći Valerija se udala za Galerija, njegova nasljednika na carskom tronu.Dioklecijan se na prijestolje Rimskog carstva uzdigao u doba velike krize i osim što je učvrstio vanjske granice Carstva, proveo je značajne gospodarske, administrativne i teritorijalne reforme. Ostao je zapamćen i kao veliki graditelj. U doba njegove vladavine Carevina je pokrivala područje Perzije, Egipat i sjevernu Afriku, balkanski poluotok do Podunavlja, Italiju, Hispaniju, te Galiju i Britaniju – danas se na tom širokom području - u turskom Istanbulu, bugarskoj Sofiji, talijanskom Milanu i Rimu, francuskom Lionu, engleskom Yorku, njemačkom Trieru, austrijskom Beču, mađarskoj Budimpešti ili grčkom Solunu - mogu naći tragovi njegove vladavine.

The palace of Emperor Diocletian

The palace is named after the great ruler of the Roman Empire, who lived between 243 and 316 A.D. and throughout history will be remembered as the first emperor who voluntarily gave up the throne and retired while constructing his summer residence right in place which later developed into the city of Split. His real name was Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocles and he was born as the son of a free slave but thanks to his military successes and impeccable art of war, he rose to claim the title of Caesar and Roman emperor. He was born in the nearby ancient Salona, today Solin, was married to Prisca and his daughter Valeria married Galerius, who was his successor to the imperial throne.Diocletian ascended to the throne of the Roman Empire, in a time of a great crisis, and in addition to strengthening the external borders of the Empire, he implemented significant economic, administrative and territorial reforms. He is always remembered as a great engineer. At the time of his reign, the Empire covered the territories of Persia, Egypt and North Africa, the Balkan peninsula to the Danube Region, Italy, Hispania as well as Gaul and Britain -and today the following widespread area - in Turkish Istanbul, Bulgarian Sofia, Italian Milan and Rome, French Lyon, English York, Germa Trier, Austrian Vienna, Hungarian Budapest, or Greek Thessaloniki - can find traces of the era of his rule.

and at its corners towers were built for the guards. The stone for its construction was supplied from the island of Brac, as well as from remote Egypt and Greece. The centre of the palace was intersected by two wide streets, “Cardo” from the north to the south and “Decumanus” from the east to the west each ending in four doors: The Golden Gate in the north, the Brass Gate in the south, the Silver Gate in the east and the Iron Gate in the west. The “Decumanus” street’s function was to divide the Palace into two parts: in the north the buildings which housed the weaving production, the army, the servants and storage, and in the southern part, the Imperial residence.The highlight of the architectural and handcrafted skills of ancient builders, is certainly reflected at the Peristyle, the main square with arcades, surrounding the open space in front of the Imperial residence, which was used for religious and ceremonial rituals. On the left side of the Peristyle, the octagonal Emperor’s mausoleum was built, and the Temple of Jupiter was built on the right side. Emperor Diocletian died in 316 A.D., but life in the palace continued for 1,711 years, until today still. His remains have not been preserved, but a symbolic sarcophagus in his memory, can be seen in the basements of Diocletian’s Palace.

Raskošnu palaču na našoj strani Jadrana dao je graditi oko 295. godine, a u nju se uselio deset godina kasnije – 305., kad se odrekao prijestolja. Na odabir mjesta za gradnju utjecala je, među ostalim, i ugodna mediteranska klima, kao i blizina izvora vrlo ljekovite sumporne vode – danas u blizini gradske ribarnice. Posljednja arheološka istraživanja Palače govore da rimski car nije u svojoj rezidenciji samo uživao u mirovini, već da je između njenih zidova postojala proizvodnja za tkanje i bojanje vune, tada neophodnog materijala za šivanje odjeće. Što govori o brizi za prihode u umirovljeničkim danima, kao i za uzdržavanje oko tisuću dvorjana u njegovoj pratnji.Dioklecijanova palača je najveća i najbolje sačuvana kasnoantička palača na svijetu. Zauzima 30 tisuća metara kvadratnih, pravokutnog je oblika i opasana zidinama a na njenim kutovima izgrađene su kule za stražare. Kamen za njenu gradnju nabavljao se s otoka Brača, ali iz udaljenog Egipta i Grčke.

Središte su joj presijecale dvije široke ulice: „cardo“ od sjevera prema jugu i „decumanus“ od istoka prema zapadu koje su završavale četirima vratima: Zlatnim vratima na sjeveru, Mjedenim vratima na jugu, Srebrnim vratima na istoku i Željeznim vratima na zapadu. Ulica „decumanus“ funkcionalno je dijelila Palaču na dva dijela: u sjevernom su bile zgrade za tkaonicu, vojsku, poslugu i skladišta, a južni dio je bio carski stan.Vrhunac arhitektonske i zanatske vještine antičkih graditelja svakako se ogleda na Peristilu, glavnom trgu i arkadama okruženom otvorenom prostoru ispred carskog stana koji je služio za vjerske i obredne rituale. Na lijevoj strani Peristila sagrađen je osmerokutni carev mauzolej, a sa desne strane Jupiterov hram. Car Dioklecijan je umro 316. godine, ali se život u Palači nastavlja tijekom 1711 godina sve do danas. Njegovi posmrtni ostaci nisu sačuvani, ali se u Podrumima Dioklecijanove palače može vidjeti simbolički sarkofag njemu u spomen.

He commissioned the building of the luxurious palace on our side of the Adriatic around 295 A.D., and into it moved ten years later - in 305,when he gave up the throne. The decision to select this specific site for construction was affected by, amongst other things, the pleasant Mediterranean climate, and the proximity to the very source of healing sulphur water - today near the city’s fish market.The last archaeological research done on the Palace shows that the Roman emperor did not only enjoy his retirement at his residence, but that the production of weaving and dyeing of wool took place within the palace walls,which at that time were the necessary materials for sewing clothes. This shows his concern about assuring income for his retirement days, as well as to support about a thousand courtiers that were in his company.Diocletian’s Palace is the largest and best preserved palace of late Antiquity in the world. It occupies an area of 30,000 square meters, it is rectangular in shape, surrounded by walls,

The charming story of Galerija Food started with Cafe bar Galerija, a coffee shop located across the street from the restaurant, all located on the ground floor of a former palace built in the 15th century. Due to its cosy and homely feel, its guests have fondly named it the ‘the living room’, with features such as a bar made from old wardrobe doors, retro chairs, as well as old books and frames. The owners of Cafe Bar Galerija have successfully managed to fuse this

Jelovnik uključuje i riblje i mesne specijalitete, kućne raviole i njoke, dragulje poput paškog sira, kozjeg sira s tartufima, mladog janjca, hobotnicu u vinu, svježe tartufe, tradicionalnu dalmatinsku pašticadu, kućno slatko i malu ali odabranu listu dalmatinskih vina, uključujući kućno, lokalno proizvedeno vino. A small family-run business in the heart of Diocletian palace with a private terrace and air-conditioned inner dining area. On the menu are many Dalmatian traditional dishes as the policy of the house is to think global but to eat local. All of the ingredients used for preparation of these dishes are obtained from local fishermen and farmers in order to support small producers but also to preserve old Dalmatian recipes and cuisine. The menu includes both seafood and meat specialities, homemade ravioli and gnocchi, gems like the cheese from the island of Pag and goat cheese with truffles, young lamb, octopus in wine, fresh truffles, traditional Dalmatian pašticada, house made desserts and a small but carefully selected list of Dalmatian wines, including the house, locally produced wines. This konoba is a place for all people who know that a great part of any travelling should include tasting local food.

Trattoria Bajamont is located near the famous sundial clock in the Piazza (People’s Square), and is known to the locals of Split as the restaurant “under the clock”. The specialities on offer at Trattoria Bajamont are mainly fish dishes and fish specialities, as fresh fish is bought daily from the fish market so the menu depends on the daily availability at the market. Pjaca se zapravo zove Narodni trg, ali ga Splićani ne zovu tim imenom već onako kako Talijani nazivaju trg - „piazza“. Prvi se put spominje u 13. stoljeću kao Širina sv. Lovre, a predstavlja prvi naseljeni dio Splita izvan Dioklecijanove palače, uz čiji se zapadni zid smjestio. Već stoljećima Pjaca je središnja pozornica gradskog života, u okolnim kavanama, kao i na njenom otvorenom prostoru Splićani su se oduvijek susretali, pretresali najvažnije događaje, šetali, zaljubljivali, odmarali, na njoj nalazili mjesto gdje bi vidjeli druge ali i sami bili viđeni. U gotičkoj zgradi, danas izložbenom prostoru, nekoć je stolovala gradska vlast, u prekrasnim zdanjima uz rubove Pjace živjele su plemićke obitelji i svaka od tih kuća ima svoju priču, svaka je svjedok zanimljive povijesti i gradskog duha. Na Pjaci je vrlo zanimljiv stari gradski sat, jedinstven jer ima 24 umjesto 12 znamenaka. Na njoj je uvijek puno ljudi, tako je bilo jučer, tako je i danas, kada je postala jedan od najvažnijih punktova za turiste koji žele uživati u onome u čemu uživaju i njihovi domaćini, Splićani.

The Piazza is actually called the People’s Square, but the citizens of Split do not call it by that name, but rather as the Italians call their square - “piazza”. Pjaca was first mentioned in the 13th century as the St. Lawrence square. It is the first inhabited part of Split outside the Palace, i.e. outside its western walls. For centuries the Pjaca has been the main stage of city life, in nearby cafes, as well as its open space, the locals of Split have always met here, discussed daily events, took strolls, fell in love, relaxed and found a place where they would see others or be seen.The Gothic building, now an exhibition hall, was formerly the seat of the city government; aristotocratic famillies lived in the magnificent buildings that line the edges of the Pjaca and each of these houses has its own story, each a witness to fascinating history and the city’s spirit. There is a very interesting old town clock, found on the Pjaca, unique because it has 24 instead of 12 digits. There are always many people in the Pjaca, as it was yesterday, so it is today, when the Pjaca became one of the most important points for tourists who want to enjoy what their hosts, the local people of Split enjoy.

Cafe-restaurant Central could be called one of the historical landmarks in the city. It opened its doors back in 1780, and was the first cafe of its kind in Split, becoming the true central point of social life in the city, and the focus of the Croatian national revival in the second half of the 19th century. It had a so called ‘Wise Men’s table’ where intellectuals and artists would gather, during the first half of the 20th century. Voćni trg

Jedan od najljepših trgova u gradu među Splićanima je poznatiji po svom neslužbenom, nego službenom imenu - Trg braće Radić. Svoje “narodno” ime može zahvaliti činjenici da je tu nekad bila bučna i živopisna tržnica na kojoj su žene iz okolnih sela prodavale voće. Nekoliko je važnih znamenitosti na ovom nevelikom trgu koji odzvanja životom u kafićima, restoranima i ekskluzivnim trgovinama a često i sajmovima. Jedna od njih je osmerokutna mletačka kula, sagrađena u 15. stoljeću za obranu tadašnjeg malog grada od napada s mora. Nasuprot kuli je palača obitelji Milesi iz 17. stoljeća sa spektakularnom baroknom fasadom, jednim od najboljih primjera tog stila u cijeloj Dalmaciji. Na samom izlazu s Voćnog trga na obalu, na Rivu, nalazi se jugozapadna kula Dioklecijanove palače. Središnji dio trga zauzima spomenik „ocu“ hrvatske književnosti, Splićaninu Marku

Maruliću, koji je bio jedan od najvažnijih mislilaca i intelektualaca na prijelazu 15. i 16. stoljeća i čija djela je, među ostalim, čitao engleski kralj Henrik VIII i španjolski kralj Karlo V. Autor spomenika je u svijetu cijenjeni kipar Ivan Meštrović , čiji se radovi nalaze u Chicagu i Syracusi u New Yorku, a njegov mauzolej se nalazi u zapadnom dijelu Splita, u blizini mora i zelenila brda Marjan. Meštrovićevo djelo je i spomenik Grguru Ninskom kod Zlatnih vrata Dioklecijanove palače.

Fruit Square

One of the most beautiful squares in the city is locally known by its unofficial name the Fruit Square, rather than by its official name - Trg brace Radic. Its popular name is derived from the fact that it used to be a noisy and colourful market where women from the surrounding villages sold their fruit.Several important landmarks are situated on this small square that is full of life in it’s cafes, restaurants, exclusive shops and fairs are also often held here. One of these landmarks is the octagonal Venetian tower, built in the 15th century to defend the then small town from attack from the sea. Opposite the tower is the palace of the family Milesi from the 17th century with a spectacular baroque façade, one of the best examples of this style in the whole of Dalmatia. The south-west tower of Diocletian’s palace is located at the exit of the Fruit Square onto the Riva waterfront.The central part of the square is occupied by a monument to the “father” of Croatian

literature, Marko Marulić from Split, who was one of the most important intellectuals at the turn of the 15th and 16th century and whose works were read by the English King Henry VIII and the Spanish King Charles V . The author of the monument is the world famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović, whose works can be found in Chicago and Syracuse in New York, and his mausoleum is located in the western part of the town, near the sea and the greenery of Marjan hill. Another one of Mestrovic’s works is the monument to Grgur Ninski, next to the Golden Gate of Diocletian’s Palace.

Restoran se budi već s prvim kašetama ribe naslaganim pred ulaznim vratima, nakon čega se probire ono što ulazi u kuhinju, da bi se tijekom dana ispremiješale okusne i mirisne senzacije sa nadahnutim razgovorima kuhara i gladnih gurmana, a sve završava radošću zbog zajedničkog hedonističkog doživljaja.

The restaurant “Noštromo” is situated right next to the fish market, which guarantees its guests a varied selection of the freshest fish on the menu every day. If someone wants to eat baked fish, this restaurant prepares it in the original Dalmatian style - roasted on a wood grill. The house speciality is the “Papal stew”-a fish stew with Mediterranean herbs and dried figs. The Papal stew goes well with unleavened bread. The recipe dates back to 1177, when the Pope dined with fishermen from Komiža when his ship took shelter from a storm in the southern part the island of Palagruža.

Prokurative je naziv velikog trga smještenog zapadno od Rive, kojega po uzoru na venecijanski Trg svetog Marka s tri strane okružuju neorenesansne zgrade s lukovima. Po njima je trg dobio svoje ime i po njima ga najviše ljudi zna, iako se službeno zove Trg Republike. Trg je otvoren jedino prema jugu, pružajući prekrasan pogled prema luci i Rivi. Gradnju Prokurativa je sredinom 19. stoljeća inicirao jedan od najpoznatijih gradonačelnika u povijesti grada Antonio Bajamonti, koji je želio pokazati da je Split svim svojim bićem oslonjen na talijanske tradicije. Otud i kolonada poput venecijanske i reljefi nad prozorima koji prizivaju antičke i renesansne utjecaje. Bajamonti je na trgu napravio i svoje veliko kazalište, koje je kasnije uništeno u požaru, a danas je u prizemlju otvorena kavana. Trg je odavno etabliran kao odlična pozornica za kulturna događanja, posebno festival zabavne glazbe, a tamošnji kafići i restorani učini su ga popularnim okupljalištem Splićana. Sastavni dio Prokurativa je i plato južno od njih, na kojem je do nakon Drugog svjetskog rata stajala velika neoklasična fontana, no zbog njenih asocijacija na talijansku okupaciju ovih prostora 1947. godine je srušena.

Prokurative is the name of the large square situated west of the Riva waterfront, which was designed as a replica of St. Mark’s Square in Venice. Three sides of the square are surrounded by the neo-Renaissance buildings with porticoes. The square received its popular name from these porticoes (Procuratoria), even though it is officially called the Republic Square. The market is open only to the south, providing a breath-taking view of the harbour and the waterfront.The construction of Prokurative was initiated in mid-19th century by Antonio Bajamonti, one of the most popular Split mayors of all time. Bajamonti wanted to show that its every aspect is embedded in Italian tradition. Hence the colonnades like the Venetian kind, and reliefs over the windows that evoke the Antique and Renaissance influences. Bajamonti built his own large theatre on the square, but it was later destroyed by a fire. The ground floor of the former theatre is nowadays home to an open cafe.Over the years Prokurative has proved to be a perfect stage for cultural events, especially pop music festivals. Local bars and restaurants make it a popular meeting place of Split citizens. An integral part of the Prokurative is a plateau to the south, on which a great neoclassical fountain was located, up to after World War II. Because of its association with the Italian occupation, it was demolished in 1947.

Samurai is the only authentic Japanese restaurant in Split, run by a Japanese owners. Japanese cuisine is listed on the UNESCO heritage list, and so is Split. Varoš i Šperun

Obližnji Varoš je stari splitski predio koji je narastao zapadno od splitskih srednjevjekovnih zidina u podnožju opjevanog brda Marjana. Nastao je istovremeno s drugim starim splitskim predgrađima - varošima – kao što je Dobri, Manuš i Lučac a naselje se formiralo oko prastare crkvice svetog Mikule iz ranog srednjeg vijeka. Ovi dijelovi grada razvijali su se usporedno oko gradske jezgre razvojem grada Splita, te za vrijeme turskih napada kada ih naseljavaju izbjeglice. Kasnije su na području Varoša izgrađene crkva svetog Križa i samostan sv. Frane, niže prema moru - na Šperunu, kojeg je utemeljio sam sv. Franjo Asiški. Turistima koji dolaze u Split zanimljiva je arhitektura Varoša, s tipično mediteranskim kućama od kamenih blokova i uskim strmim uličicama bez asfaltnog pokrova, a šetnja završava na marjanskim vidikovcima odakle puca prekrasan pogled na Split i gradsku luku. Ili, pak, negdje na padinama Marjana, u zelenoj gradskoj oazi. Nekada naselje splitskih ribara i težaka danas je Varoš mjesto modernog turističkog smještaja, te zanimljivih trgovina za kupnju. U Varošu, kao i u uličicama koje vode do Šperuna, može se okrijepiti u brojnim konobama, bistroima i malim restoranima sa autentičnom, domaćom hranom i pićem.

Varoš i Šperun

Nearby Varoš is an old Split borough that developed west of Split’s medieval walls at the foot of the well known hill Marjan. It was built at the same time as the other old Split suburbs - varoš - such as Dobri, Manuš and Lučac. The settlement was formed around the ancient church of St. Mikula erected in the early Middle Ages. These parts of the town were developed simultaneously around the city nucleus of Split, and further expanded during the Turkish invasion when they were inhabited by refugees. Later, in the Varoš area two major churches were built – the Church of the Holy Cross in the heart of Varoš and closer to the sea at Šperun, the Monastery of St. Francis, which was founded by St. Francis of Assisi himself. Tourists who come to Split find the architecture of Varoš interesting; with its typical Mediterranean houses of stone blocks and steep narrow streets without cement cover. The stroll ends at the Marjan lookouts which offer a beautiful view of Split and the harbour. Or the stroll can end somewhere on the slopes of Marjan, the green oasis of the town. Once a settlement of Split fishermen and farmers, today Varoš is a place of modern tourist accommodation and shopping. Varoš and the streets that lead to Šperun have numerous taverns, bistros and small restaurants with authentic local food and drinks.

The name Bajamonti was given in memory of one of the most deserving of Split’s mayor, Antonio Bajamonti, who in 1859, on the site of today’s restaurant-cafe, commissioned the building of one of the most modern Dalmatian theatres of the 19th century. Several decades later, on the ground floor of the theatre, a cinema was opened and today in this same space we find the restaurant-cafe Bajamonti which has carefully selected images from film history as evidence on its walls.The fact that the restaurant is included in Croatia’s best restaurant list, speaks volumes about its excellence. Zgrada splitskog Hrvatskog Narodnog Kazališta građena je 1893. godine zahvaljujući donacijama građana Splita, a nakon velikog požara 1970. godine, kazalište je obnovljeno prema starim nacrtima. Kazalište ima dramski, baletni i operni ansambl, kao i svoj orkestar a tijekom ljeta – između 15. srpnja i 15. kolovoza – na Splitskom ljetu se daju predstave izvan zgrade, na pozornicama pod otvorenim nebom. Na repertoaru Kazališta nalaze se brojna djela klasičnih, kao i modernih autora.

The Croatian National Theatre in Split was built in 1893 thanks to the donations of the citizens of Split, and after the great fire in 1970, the theatre was restored to its former beauty according to its original design. The theatre has drama, ballet and opera ensembles as well as its own orchestra. During summer - from 15 July to 15 August – it organises the Split Summer Festival with outdoor performances, either on stages or beneath the open sky. The Theatre’s repertoire comprises numerous works of classic and contemporary authors.

Bačvice su najveće i najpoznatije gradsko kupalište, a po toj plitkoj pješčanoj uvali ime je dobio cijeli gradski predio. Bačvice is the biggest and most famous beach resort in the city. This borough of Split was named after this shallow sandy bay. Along with Marjan hill, Riva and Diocletian’s Palace, this beach resort is one of the visual landmarks of the town. An interesting fact about Bačvice beach is that you can see groups of locals, of all ages, gathered around a ball game, called “picigin”, which is played throughout the whole year - even in the winter months.Further to the east is Firule beach. Poljud is an area of the city well-known for the football club “Hajduk” and in recent years young people from all over the world have gathered here because of the three-day rave party that takes place in July. But those who choose to walk along the coastal area in this city suburb can find additional pleasures. On this side of the Marjan peninsula, harbours are located, where hundreds of Split residents tie their vessels; as well as diving clubs and clubs for sports fishermen. Alongside these harbours, in the shade of the Marjan forest and close to the sea, you can relax and enjoy the hospitality on offer in the surrounding cafes and restaurants.Interestingly, the entire sports complex along with its stadium, was built on a site which was most well-known for its healing mud. Thus, before the construction of the stadium, it was common to see people on the beach in bathing suits whose entire body was covered in black mud. They would coat their entire bodies in the mud, and then lie in the sun, waiting for it to dry.

Poljud je predio grada najpoznatiji po stadionu nogometnog kluba „Hajduk“ a posljednjih godina na njemu se okupljaju mladi iz cijelog svijeta zbog trodnevnog rave partyja koji se održava u srpnju. No, oni koji se odluče za šetnju uz more ovim gradskim predjelom mogu naći i dodatne užitke. Na toj su strani marjanskog poluotoka smještene lučice u kojima je privezano na stotine plovila splitskih stanovnika, kao i ronilački te klubovi za sportske ribolovce. U lučicama se, u hladovini marjanske šume i u blizini mora, može lijepo uživati u ugostiteljskoj ponudi nekog od kafea i restorana.Zanimljivo je da je čitav sportski kompleks sa stadionom izgrađen na terenu koji je bio poznat po svom ljekovitom blatu. Tako je prije izgradnje stadiona uobičajeno bilo vidjeti na plaži ljude u kupaćim kostimima čije je cijelo tijelo prekriveno crnim blatom. Blato su rukama vadili na plaži, a onda se tako premazani grijali na suncu i čekali da se osuši.

Split ima bogatu sportsku tradiciju a njegovi stanovnici ga s ponosom nazivaju „najsportskijim gradom na svijetu“ jer smatraju da ne postoji mjesto slične veličine koje je izrodilo toliko brojnih sportskih talenata kao što je Split. U gradu aktivno djeluje više od 80 sportskih klubova. Zbog brojnih trofeja u klupskim i pojedinačnim natjecanjima koje su osvojili splitski sportaši i sportašice, 2007. godine je ostvarena stara ideja o osnutku Kuće slave splitskog sporta kao i Muzeja sporta na Gripama. U njemu ostaju zabilježena velika sportaška imena koja je teško i pobrojati. Na Olimpijskim igrama od Pariza 1924. do Londona 2012. godine učestvovalo je 196 sportaša iz Splita, a zlatnim, srebrnim ili brončanim medaljama okitilo se njih 73. Jedna sportašica, Antonija Brlek, učestvovala je na natjecanju paraolimpijaca a kući je donijela dvije zlatne medalje. Na više od tri Olimpijade u svojoj sportskoj karijeri učestvovalo je 16 Splićana

Split has a rich sporting tradition and its inhabitants proudly call it the “sportiest city in the world” because they believe that there is no city of similar size in the world, that has turned out as many sporting talents as Split has. The city has more than 80 actively functioning sports clubs. Due to the numerous trophies won in club and individual competitions by Split and it’s athletes, an old idea was realized in 2007, and that was to form the Split House of Fame for Sport and the Museum of Sports in Gripe. Here you will find the records of great sporting names that are so vast in number that they are are difficult to count. At the Olympic Games from Paris in 1924 to London in 2012, 196 athletes were attendees from Split, and gold, silver or bronze medals were won by 73 of them. One athlete, Antonija Brlek, took part in the Para-Olympics competition, and brought home two gold medals. 16 men and women from Split, have each attended more than 3 Olympic Games in their sporting career. Među mnogim zanimljivostima u Muzeju se može saznati da je prošlo 95 godina od prve utakmice bejzbola u Splitu, 1918. godine. Mačevanje je, pak, jedan od prvih sportova koji se pojavio u gradu, a prvo društvo registrirano je još 1877. godine! O povijesti nogometnog kluba „Hajduk“ , starog 105 godina, ovdje zna svaki dječačić a nositi njegov bijeli dres najveći je san mnogih ovdašnjih tinejđera.Gripe su također dom splitskog košarkaškog kluba čija je dvorana u neposrednom susjedstvu, a u periodu između 1968. do 1990. godine on se zvao „Jugoplastika“ i igrači su nosili prepoznatljivi žuti dres. Pod tim imenom, a potom i kao „POP ‘84“ i „Slobodna Dalmacija“ osvojili su tri godine zaredom naslov klupskoga prvaka Europe. Postoji zanimljivost vezana za početke košarke u Hrvatskoj – prva utakmica održana je u Zagrebu 1929. godine a u natjecanju dviju ženskih ekipa prvi koš postigla je – Splićanka! Gotovo cijelo desetljeće kasnije, 1938., prva je košarkaška lopta stigla u Split i to iz Praga, odakle je davno ranije stigla i prva nogometna. Obje su donijeli splitski studenti koji su se školovali u Pragu.

Almost a decade later, in 1938, the first basketball arrived in Split,and that from Prague, the same place where the first football was sent from, only that arrived much earlier. Both were brought to Split by students from Split who studied in Prague.

For more than 25 years the Matijašević family has run a restaurant located on the south side of the small arena of the Gripe Sports Centre, a venue of the historical successes of Split basketball. 1 Žnjan

Žnjan je predio koji se nalazi južno od ceste koja vodi prema istočnom izlazu iz Splita, a njegovom cijelom duljinom prostire se šljunčana i kamenita plaža. Zemljani plato kao i nove plaže nasute su 1998. godine kada je u posjet Splitu stigao papa Ivan Pavao II, da bi na tom prostoru održao misu na otvorenom za tisuće hodočasnika, o čemu svjedoči veliki podignuti križ na Žnjanu. Uređivanje plaža, kao i sadnja zelenila nastavilo se godinama kasnije, da bi danas cijelim prostorom dominirali kafići i restorani sa vanjskim štekatima, a ljeti još nizovi ležaljki i suncobrana za kupače. Svakako, Žnjan je postao nova omiljena plaža za mlade, obitelji s djecom i turiste kojima se nudi i apartmanski te hotelski smještaj u neposrednoj blizini. Osim brojnih zabavnih sadržaja za djecu, plaža ima vanjske tuševe, kabine za presvlačenje i javni WC, te posebno napravljen ulaz u more za invalide, a dio plaže je namijenjen i vlasnicima pasa. Nekoć je Žnjan bio nepregledno polje žita kojim se opskrbljivao grad, a njegovo se ime spominje u povijesnim knjigama još u 11. stoljeću. U 14. stoljeću spominje se na tom području crkvica Gospe od Žnjana u kojoj su se okupljali hodočasnici iz bliže i dalje okolice, a čuvali su je svećenici pustinjaci sve dok nije razorena. U neposrednoj blizini izgrađena je i crkva svetog Lovre koja vjerojatno potječe iz 9. ili 10. stoljeća.

Žnjan

Žnjan is the town area located to the south of the road which leads to the eastern exit from Split. A gravel and rocky beach spreads across its entire length. A large plateau and the new beach embankment were built in 1998 in preparation for the first visit of Pope John Paul II to Split. He held a Holy Mass here, in the open, for thousands of pilgrims, as evidenced by the large cross afterwards erected on Žnjan.The development of the beach, as well as the landscape architecture continued years later, and today the whole area is dominated by bars and restaurants with outdoor open terraces, and in the summer months there is also a series of additional beach chairs and umbrellas. Žnjan has therefore become a new favourite beach for young people, families with children and tourists. There are apartments and hotel accommodation in the immediate vicinity. In addition to numerous entertainment facilities for children, the beach has outdoor showers, changing cabins and public toilets. Furthermore, it has specially designed access to the sea for the disabled, and a part of the beach is allocated for those who come to the beach with their dogs. In the past Žnjan was an immense field of wheatgrain, which supplied the town, and its name is mentioned in history books from the 11th century. In the 14th century there is a reference to the Church of Our Lady of Žnjan, where the faithful from near and far gathered. The church was guarded by the eremite priests, until it was demolished. The church of St. Lawrence, which probably dates back to the 9th or 10th century, was built iIn the immediate vicinity.

Zipline je prava avantura u kojoj sudionici ostaju bez daha dok se spuštaju niz žice različitih duljina koje su razapete između stijena na različitim visinama.Strmoglavi spust započinje iz Podašpilja, na visokoj stijeni u blizini srednjovjekovne tvrđave Visećgrad, a završava u Slanici. Sastoji se od osam žica ukupne dužine 2100 metara a osmišljene su tako da se na njima može lako zaustaviti i na trenutak uživati u ljepotama koje je isklesala priroda. Za one manje odvažne postoji mogućnost spuštanja u tandemu s vodičem. Spuštanje traje tri sata. Oni koji su iskusili ovaj jedinstveni ‘ples na žici’ složit će se da je, osim nezaboravne zabave koju izaziva uzbudljiv spust, svakako impresivniji pogled na netaknutu prirodu i ljepote omiškog kraja. Stoga ne propustite avanturu u kanjonu rijeke Cetine – jer to je doživljaj koji će sigurno dugo pamtiti.

Zipline is a real adventure where participants remain breathless as they descend on a set of cords of different lengths that are placed between rocks at different heights.The steep descent begins from Podašpilje, a high rock near the medieval fortress Visećgrad and ends in Slanica. It consists of eight cords with a total length of 2,100 meters, which are designed in such a way that one can easily stop for a moment and enjoy the beauty that nature has carved out.For the less daring there is the possibility of descending in tandem with a guide. The descend lasts three hours. Those who have experienced this unique ‘dancing on the cord’ will agree that, in addition to the memorable fun of the exciting descent, even more impressive are the views of the untouched nature and the beauty of the Omis region. So be sure not to miss the adventure in the canyon of the Cetina river - because it is an experience you will surely remember.
