G abriel

Thank You, Lord for giving me

The brand new year ahead. Help me live the way I should

As each new day I tread. Give me gentle wisdom

That I might help a friend, Give me strength and courage

So a shoulder I might lend. The year ahead is empty,

Help me fill it with good things Each new day filled with joy And the epiphany it brings.

Amen

A New Year of Epiphany

so many people, and God alone can fully reward you. I pray every day that God will bless you and your loved ones, keep you safe, and enable you, and us, to be that star that leads people to the Lord. Together as a community of believers we are called to proclaim Christ’s presence and love to all people and to help everyone to experience the Good News of the Gospel. Be the Good News we want others to come to know. Next Sunday, January 10th, our wonderful Learning Loft Preschool invites you to their annual Open House from 10 am till 1 pm. Come on over after or before Mass and take a look at the bright and beautiful preschool that gives our children such a positive start to their educational path. If you are considering sending your child or children to the 3 year old, 4 year old, or Pre-K program, I would encour-age you to register as soon as possible. The Learning Loft has a great reputation in the community and tends to fill up quickly. Even if you do not have children that age, you are most welcome just to stop over and take a look. The Loft is a great jewel in our faith formation process for our youth. Calling all adults who have been baptized Catholic but have not completed their initiation into the Church through the sacrament of Confirmation. The most important qualifi-cation is simply the desire to be confirmed as a Catholic Christian, committed to living the faith, and using the gifts of the Holy Spirit given to you at Baptism. Five Sunday afternoon sessions will be held at St. John Vianney Parish to help adults prepare beginning on January 17th, from 1:30 to 2:45 pm. We will celebrate the sacrament on February 28th with Bishop Lennon presiding. Spread the word to anyone who could benefit from these sessions, and call our office or St. John Vianney parish to register. Have you started to read Rediscover Jesus yet? What a wonderful resolution it would be for this new year to truly rediscover who He is and to grow closer to the Lord in a very intimate and personal way. This book and certainly the workshop that we are hosting on March 12th by Dr. John Wood, a close associate of Matthew Kelly, can help. Please call the office to purchase a ticket ($20) for this very worthwhile day that will take place from 9am til 1:30pm. Have a wonderful week. Thank you again for the great gift you are to our parish. May this new year be filled with eve-ry grace and blessing and God’s great mercy for you and your family. Peace be with you. In God’s love,

My Sisters and Brothers, 2016 has begun, and I wish you the very best in this new year. May you experience abundant blessings, and may the challenges that all of you will inevitably face bring growth in faith and positive resolutions. Although nothing magical will happen because we have put up a new calendar, and none of us really knows what lies ahead in this new year, we can be sure that the Lord will lead us, guide us, and pro-vide for us. So, I pray that this truly will be a “Year of Mer-cy” from the Lord, and Christ will continue to be a source of light, hope, and peace. Happy New Year. This weekend we celebrate the great feast of Epiphany. The simple, quiet birth of our Savior, witnessed by the local shepherds, is made manifest to the whole world. Magi from the east followed the star and brought precious gifts. You know the story. Regardless of the historical accuracy of the story we tell, the message is not only true, but more im-portant than ever. Jesus did come to bring His light and peace to all people. Our world is filled with so much dark-ness and lack of peace, and so many who need to experi-ence the Good News that Christ brings. There are so many stars in the sky that are competing to attract people with conflicting values and alluring and tempting promises that often lead to emptiness and even destruction. If the star that leads to Christ is going to attract people, it needs to be the brightest, and that means our example of Being CHRIST ~ Every Day ~ Everywhere needs to be clear, authentic, and inviting. The feast of Epiphany is a challenge to put what we are celebrating into action and to make the coming of the Lord a reality in our world. So, who do you know that may feel excluded? Is there someone who is searching for the right star, or tragically following a star that leads no-where? Without a doubt the answer to the challenge and call of Epiphany is a renewed commitment to experience Christ in a deeper way and to offer our most precious gifts, especially our time and talents in helping to do the work of Christ and bringing Good News to people who continue to live in the darkness. Our parish is so blessed by the goodness and generosity of our people. I could never fully express my gratitude for all the ways your gifts make such a difference. I want to say thank you again to all who help us celebrate these sacred and holy times so well. We are so blessed by so many pa-rishioners who graciously and generously share their gifts in so many ways throughout the year, and especially at this holy time of Christmas. Your generosity to our parish, espe-cially in the Christmas collection, enables us to maintain and operate this large and vibrant community and to do so much good for people. God alone knows how your con-sistent and continued good stewardship touches the lives of

LITURGY CORNER

We’re still celebrating the Christmas season. Hopefully, you’re not in a rush to take down your decorations and return to our ordinary routine. This weekend we celebrate one of the most fa-mous stories of the Christmas season. On Epiphany we celebrate the visit made by the three Kings to pay homage to the infant Jesus. In many cultures, it was on the Feast of Epiphany when people exchanged gifts, commemorating the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh given to Jesus

by the Magi. It’s important to note that after the Magi encountered Jesus they were changed. They paid attention to the dream they received and departed another way --- they altered their route in order to protect Christ. We can look at our-selves today. Have we altered our route as a result of our encounter with Christ? The Magi were led to Jesus by a great light – the star of Bethlehem. Jesus is the light that shines for all of us and it’s up to us to keep that light shining, not just at Christmas but all the time.

Please remember that we will continue with Night Prayer on Sundays at 7:45 pm. This is a short, twenty minute prayer of Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours combined with Eucharistic Adoration. It’s a beautiful, inspiring service that will help you get in the right frame of mind for the coming week.

Music Notes …

Many scholars have written about the magi. Who were these kings who traveled to Bethlehem to pay homage to a newborn King? The Scriptures tell a wonderful story filled with intrigue and mystery. And, of course, the story is punctuated by the star. Today, in our own mind's eye, we can picture the magi and their travels, their meeting with Herod, the gifts of treasure they brought to honor Jesus, But where are we in this story? Like the magi, our world still seeks Jesus. It's up to us as Christians to be the face of Jesus for all who seek Him - that bright star lead-ing the way to the Lord. "Oh, star of wonder, star of night. Star with royal beauty bright. Westward leading, still pro-ceeding, guide us to thy perfect light." From We Three Kings.

Exercise Body and Brain … How do we keep our brains in tip top condition and improve memory? Actually, keeping our bodies fit can directly im-prove our brain function. A 2014 study done at the Univer-sity of British Columbia revealed that doing exercises that raise heart rate and make us sweat on a regular basis can positively impact the area of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Things that negatively impact memory such as stress and lack of sleep are frequently im-proved by exercise thus helping improve memory as well. Another way to keep the brain fit is to directly exercise brain function by continually challenging ourselves. Try to learn new things such as knitting, sewing, cooking, foreign lan-guage, or even do regular tasks but do them a different way. Completing puzzles such as Sudoku, word scrambles, word searches or building puzzles keeps our brains active and may even delay the onset of dementia symptoms. So for 2016, be fit and active both physically and mentally! Here’s to our health! Pam Lewis, Parish Nurse

Please pray for the ill and hospitalized members of our Parish, their families and caregivers. Pray for an end to abortion
