Garethの死と円卓騎士団の崩壊

Sir Thomas Maloryの LelV[orfe Darthurは， Arthur王宮廷とし、

う騎士社会の誕生，発展，崩壊の物語である.その中には， Merlin (円卓

騎士団の創設者であり， Arthurの相談役，予言者)， Morgan (Arthur

の姉でありながら，さまざまな魔術で Arthur に敵対的な態度をとるが

物語の大詰めでは Mordredとの戦いで傷ついた Arthuの傷を癒すため

彼をAvalonへ運び去る〉を中心とするケルト的幻想の世界川 Lancelot

と Guinevereの不倫の恋(2)に代表される男女間の愛の世界，豪胆，華麗

な騎士の世界，聖杯探求(Josephof Arimatheaが，キリスト際刑の際

にその血を受けたと言われる，最後の晩餐に用いたのと同じ聖杯 Holy

Grailを求める騎士たちの冒険の物語〉に象徴される宗教的世界がある.

この拙論では，騎士道という禁欲と友愛によって;倍われた高直な人間精神

に潜む，愛欲，嫉妬，怨念，復讐という人聞の内的矛盾と，それに起因す

る円卓騎士団 (theRound Table)の崩壊を，悲劇的な騎士 Garethの

死を中心に論述したい.

中世ヨーロッパに花聞いた騎士道とは何か，またそれの体現者ーである騎

土とはいかなる存在であったか.騎士とは，見習修業期間を経て，武技，

礼儀作法，教養を身につけ，宗教的，封建的，個人的義務に忠実で、あり，

不義と悪と戦う正義と善の騎兵戦土のことである.また，いかなる騎士も

騎士を叙任する権利を持ちえた.騎士は神の僕となり，主従関係を維持し，

自己の名誉となるものに忠実でなければならない.

また騎士道とは，騎士が遵守すべき生活倫理，行動規範であれ彼は豪

胆，敬y怠廉直，礼節，寛容，また，封土，軍役奉仕を機軸とする主従関

係の精神的根幹をなす誠実忠誠，信義を要求された.騎士道は，一方で、は，

個人的名誉探求のための行動原理となれ他方では，主従関係，すなわち

封建的秩序維持に不可欠の社会的規律の役割を果した.

騎土道は，あくまで理想的な崇高な理念である.それがゆえにまた弱点

を内在していた.すなわち，翁士道とは，戦闘という人間本能とキリスト

教的倫理思想という本来は相容れることのないこつの要素から成り立って

いたからである.したがって，人間としての騎士の内面では，常に，禁欲

的精神と貧欲，愛欲，暴力という本能，妄念との相到があった.騎士の個

人的名誉獲得と，主従関係という制度的，精神的秩序の維持は，騎士道の

遵守を前提とする.したがって，騎士道という個人的と同時に社会的行動

原理からの逸税は，人間内部の精神的混乱と，社会の制度的，精神的秩序

の崩擦を意味する.

Arthur宮廷における円卓騎士団は理想的な騎土社会を象徴し，それは

Merlinによって創設された.

円卓騎士団は，蔚土社会の正義，友愛，団結を意味し，同時にそれは理想

的な人間社会をも象徴する. Arthurは円卓の騎士たちが守るべき規律を

申し渡す.

fle treson， and to gyff mercy unto hym that askith

mercy， uppon pay田 offorfiture of their worship and

lordship of kynge Arthure for evirmore; and allwayes to

Arthurは勇気，慈悲，愛，礼節9 気品を備えた騎士をその理想と L，

人，裏切り，正当な理由のない戦いは騎士にとって背徳行為であるとみな

す，したがって，円卓騎士団の存続， Arthur宮廷の制度的，精神的秩序

は，彼が決めたt騎士道の遵守によって，はじめて成り立つ.

円卓騎土団の構成員は武勲においては卓越せる人物たちであったが9 反

面，彼らは，騎士道精神と己が煩悩との相刻という運命のもとに生きるこ

とを余議なくされた. Arthur宮廷の瓦解は，騎士のもつ内的矛盾一一騎

士道という高遵な理念と生々しい本能の併存一ーに起因する.

円卓騎士団の瓦解の一因は， Arthurの妃である Guinevere と Lan-

celotとの不義にあるが，特に注意を要するのは，彼らの不倫の恋だけで

Arthur王宮廷が崩壊したかどうかである. Arthurは Lancelotが誤っ

て Gawainの弟である Gaherisと Gareth を殺害した時に，己れの感

概を表白する.

Arthurにとって，王妃は首の挿替えがきしだが，一度失った円卓騎士

団は再び戻ってこない.彼は己れの王妃よりも騎士団の存続を重視する.

つまり，王妃の不義だけでは，円卓騎士団は分裂しないのである. Arthur

の愛する騎士は Lancelotと Gawainである(3).彼らの聞の亀裂が円卓

騎士団の崩壊の根本原因となる.

Guinevereと Lancelotの不義は Gawainの弟である Agravainと

Mordredの策略によって露見する.王妃は死刑の宣告をうけ，危ういと

ころを Lancelotによって救出される. だが，その時， Lancelotはそ

れとは知らずに Gaherisと Garethを殺害する.Garethは Lancelot

が自分の手で騎士にした人物であり， Garethは常に Lancelot~こ忠誠を

誓っていたのである. Garethの死は悲劇的で、ある.彼は自分が最も敬愛

する騎士によって，理由もなく殺されるのである. W. L. Guerinが言う

ように Garethは罫!なき犠牲者なのである(4). Gawainは Lancelotに対

して報復的な態度にでる. Garethの死は，騎士道を基盤にした L叩 celot

と Gawain の人間関係に亀裂を生じさせ.またその死は，高遇な騎士精

神に育くまれた円卓騎士団の死も意味する(5)• 以下，私は Garethと

Lancelot， Garethとその兄弟， Gawain， Agravain， Gaheris， Mordred

との関係を論ずることによれ Garethの死と円卓騎士団の崩壊との因果

関係また騎士社会のもつ内的矛盾を論じたい.

Garethは聖霊降臨祭の日， Arthurの宮廷に登場する.この美しい若

者は，その素姓を明らかにLないため，侮蔑され， "Beaumains" (fayre

handes) 161 という i軍名をつけられる.彼はさまざまな冒険をするが，な

かで、も， Red Knight of the Red Landsに囚われの身となっていた。

Lyonesを解放し，ついには Arthurの前で彼女と結婚する話は Lancelot

と Guinevere の不倫の恋と対照的である。 これはふつう 'Taleof

Gareth'と言われるものである.だが， この話で重要なのは Lancelot

が Garethを騎土に叙任することである.三人は騎士道という堅固な鮮で

結ぼれる171. Gareth は兄である G白川i'ain以上に Lancelot を愛した.

Gawainは Gareth の死の報に接して驚博する.彼が吐露する言葉の中

に， Garethの Lancelotへの深い友愛を読みとることができる.

he slew my good brother sir Gareth， for 1 dare say my

brothir loved him bettir than me and all hys brethirn

therefore 1 may never belyeve that sir Launcelot slew

Lancelotと Garethの関係は，忠誠と友愛で、結ぼれた円卓騎士団の理想

的人間関係を象徴する.忠誠を尽くす Garethの偶然とはいえ，理由なき

殺害は背徳行為であり，騎士聞の堅い団結の喪失，円卓騎士団の機軸であ

る騎士の提からの逸脱， Arthurのめざす理想的騎士像からの議離を意味

する. M. Lambertは言う。

. the kil1ing of the good knight Gareth by Lancelot，

the best knight in the wor1d and the man in the wor1d

円卓騎士団の核心である騎士道からの逸税は，宮廷の精神的動揺を招来す

る. Lancelotは己れが騎士に叙任した Garethを殺し，一方，物語の終

末において， Arthurは己れが騎士に叙任した Lancelotと織烈な闘し、を

!ずる，ここにはいかなる秩序もない.

Gawain兄弟は， 円卓騎士団の崩壊という悲劇の中では， 重要な没割

を演じる.彼らは人間性のさまざまな面を我々に鮮明に描いてみせる.

Gawain， Agravain， Gaheris， Garethは Lot王と Arthurの嫡 Mor

gawseとの聞に生れ，また Mordredは， Arthurと Morgawse との

間にできた，近親相姦の子である.

Lotは，もともと Arthurとは敵対関係にあったが， Arthurに対す

る憎悪9 怨恨の念が最高潮に達したのは9 彼の妻 Morgawseが Arthur

と同会した時である.

Lotは Arthurの忠実な助言者 Pellinorev;こ殺され， Gawain， Agravain，

Gaherisは父のために復讐を決意する. Pellinoreは GawainとGaheris

の手で殺されるのであるが，物語の中では，彼の妻から息子たちへの言葉

の中で間接的に報告される.

of sir Gawayne and hys brothir， sir Gaherys! And they

slew hym nat manly， but by treson. (810)

Pellinoreの死後，彼の息子 Lamorakは Lot の未亡人であり，かつ

また Gawain兄弟の母である Morgawse と密通する.この恥辱を知っ

た Gawainは憤怒に身を焦がし， Lamorak への報復の意志を弟たちに

示す.

Gaherisは Lamorakと Morgawseとの密会の場を襲う.この場面は，

のちのAgravainと Mordredの畏におちた Lancelotと Guinevereの

密会の場面を訪梯とさぜる. Gaherisは，残虐にも己が母の首をうちとる.

Lamora1王は Gaherisの行為に絶叫する.

A， sir Gaherys， knyght of the Table Rounde! Fowle and

evyll have you done， and to you grete shame! Alas， why

have ye slayne youre modir that bare you? For with

more ryght ye shulde have slayne me! (612)

Gaherisは抗弁ずる.

. for thou haste put my bretherne and me to a shame;

and thy fadir slew oure fadir， and thou to ly by oure

modir is to muche shame for us to su伍r.And as for thy

fadir， kynge Pellynor， my brothir sir Gawaynεand 1

slew hym. (612)

恥辱が復讐の念を喚起する.憤怒，報復の念の虜になった Gaherisは，生

みの親まで殺し，その場を逃れた Lamorakもついに Garethを除く

Gawain兄弟の報復の刃if:こ倒れる Morgawseと密通したとしても，

Lamorakは円卓騎士の間では武勲において優れた人物で、ある. Tristram

は， Gaherisと Agravainを非難する.

Gawain， Agravain， Gaheris， Mordredの四人は，人目につかない場所

で， Lamorakを前後から攻撃し，中でも Mordredは，卑怯にも背後か

らの攻撃で Lamorakに致命傷を負わす.彼の卑怯，残忍な行為は，のち

にArthurから王位を掠奪する際にも姿をみせる. Pellinore， Morgawse

殺害では G乳wain，Gaherisが主役を演じ， Lamorak殺害では， Gareth

を除く兄弟すべてが加わり，中でも瀕死の Arthur宮廷に!とめを刺す悪の

化身とも言うべき Mordredが登場する.兄弟たちの暴虐極まる行為に，

Garethは兄弟たちからの訣別を決意する. Garethは Tristramに，兄

弟たちの所業に対する遺憾の意を表わす.

‘As for that， 1 blame you nat，' seyde sir Gareth，‘for well

1 undirstonde the vengeaunce of my brethirne， sir Gaw-

ayne， sir Aggravayne， sir Gaherys， and sir Mordred. But

as for me，' seyde sir Gareth， '1 meddyll nat of their mat-

ers， and therefore there is none that lovyth me of them.

And for cause that 1 undirstonde they be murtherars of

good knyghtes 1 lefte there company， and wolde God 1

had bene besyde sir Gawayne whan that moste noble

knyght sir Lamorak was slayne.' (699)

し.GaherisとGarethの死を招く因を成したのは， AgravainとMordred

である.悲劇は次の言葉で幕を聞ける.

wyndis and blastis causyth lusty men and women to

五月，それはタ野辺の花は譲郁と呑り，人々は冬の酷寒から解放されL，生

命の躍動を感じる季節である.この陽光輝く季節を舞台に，人間の暗黒の

悲劇が展開される. Garethば 9 兄弟たちの中では，五月の陽光の如く，

明るい面を象徴するのだが，彼の死によって， Gawain， MuTdredの冬の

如き冷酷，暗黒な面が，蒼天に湧く詰i雲の如くにアーサ一宮廷を覆い，悲

劇の血の雨を降らし， Arthur宮廷に咲き誇る騎:土道の花は，一つまたー

っと血に染まり散ってゆく.

Agravainと Mordredは日頃から Lancelotと Gineverelこ憎悪の

念を抱いていたが，その中でも Agravainは二人の関係を王に知らせる

べきだと強く Gawain，Gaheris， Garethに訴える.

これに対して Gawainは Lancelatは王と王妃をしばしば窮境から救い，

Gawain，また Agravain，Mordredさえも命を救ってもらったことが

あると Lancelotへの恩義を強調する. また Garethは恭j煩を誓う

Lancelotのために言う.

‘Nother 1，' seyde sir Gareth， 'for 1 shall never say evyll

by that man that made me knyght.' (1162)

Lancelotによって騎士に叙任された Garethの Lancelotへの忠誠，真

撃な態度は不変である.GawainとGarethは円卓騎土団の結末を予期す

る.

‘Alas!，' seyde sir Gawayne and sir Gareth，‘now ys thys

realme holy destroyed and myscheved， and the noble fe-lyshyp of the Pounde Table shall be disparbeled!' (1162)

Gawain， Gaheris， Garethは，円卓騎士団の崩壊につながる Lancelot

への忘思行為に加わらない.

もともと口数の多い (opynne-mowthed)，しかも不幸の種をまきちら

し，王の死の原因を作った張本人で、ある Agravainは Arthurに王妃

の不義を告げる.

‘My lorde，' seyde sir Aggravayne， '1 shalle telle you， for 1

may kepe hit no lenger. Here ys 1 and my brothir sir Mor-

dred brake unto my brothir sir Gawayne， sir Gaherys and

to sir Gareth-for thys ys all， to make hit shorte-how that

we know all that sir Launcelot holdith youre quene， and

hath done longe; and we be your syster sunnes， we may

suffir hit no longer. And all we wote that ye shulde be

above sir Launcelot， and ye ar the kynge that made hym

knyght， and therefore we woll preve hit that he is a

traytoure to youre person.' (1163)

Lancelotは Arthurが騎土に叙任した人物である@その騎士に妻を寝と

られていると Agravinは告げる. Arthurは以前から Lancelotと王妃

との関係をうすうす察知していたにちがいないのだが，彼にとっては，王

妃との夫婦関係よりも，円卓騎士団の維持の方がより価値があったのであ

る(9).

For， as the Freynshe booke seyth， the kynge was ful1

lothe that such a noyse shulde be uppon sir Launcelot

and his quene; for the kynge had a demyng of hit， but

he wold nat here thereoff， for sir Launcelot had done

so much for hym and for the quene so many tymes that

wyte you wel1 the kynge loved hym passyngly well.

Arthurは Lancelot を心から愛したのである. Lancelot によって続

士に叙任された Garethは終始一貫して忠誠を守るが，一方， Lancelot

は，己が主君，しかも彼を騎士に叙任した思人の妻と恋仲になるのであ

る.

Agravainは Lancelotと Guinevereを畏にかけるべく，その策略

を王に話す.狩猟に出かけた壬に，一夜を外で明かすと王妃に伝言させ

Lancelotと Guinevereを二人だけにし，その密会の場を奇襲しようと

いうのである.

Agr21vain， Mordred，そして12人の円卓騎士 (Gawainの二人の息子も

含む〉が，密会している二人を不意打ちする. Lancelotとの激闘のすえ，

Agravain， Gawainの2人の息子は殺され， Mordredだけが生き残る.

Pellinore殺害では Gawain， Gaheris，母親Morgawse殺害ではGaheris，

Lamorakへの報復では Gareth を除く Gaぷ7ain兄弟すべて， また

Lancelotと Guinevereの恋をあばき 9 円卓騎士団の分裂のきっかけを

つくったのが Agravain，残るは兄弟の悪をすべて担って， M訂 dredが舞

台に登場する.

Guinevereは Lancelotとの不倫の関係により死を宣告される. Lan-

celotは刑場へ赴く.衣装をぬがされ，下着姿となり，火あぶりの刑に処

せられる王妃を力ずくで奪いかえす.だが Lancelotは致命的な過失を犯

す.武装もせず，平時の服装でいた Gaherisと Garethに頭蓋の上から

剣をふりおろし，二人を殺害する.刑場へは Gawainも出る予定であっ

た.だが彼は，王妃の屈辱的な最期を見るにしのびず，いやいやながら，

そのかわりとして Gaherisと Gareth I'こ刑場へ赴かせたのである.

Garethは G丘wainの内?こ潜む復讐の念を憎んでいた(叫.その Garethの

死は， Gawainの報復の念を眠りから匙えらせたのである Gawainの

Lancelotへの暗い憎悪の念が始動しはじめる.我が子を殺されてもじっ

と耐えていた Gawainfがちついに， Lancelotへの復讐の行動に出る.

Gawainは Lancelotに怒りをぶつける.

‘Now， fy on thy proude wordis!' seyde sir Gawayne.‘As

for my lady the quene， wyte thou well， 1 wo11 never say

of her shame. But thou， false and recrayde knyght，' seyde

sir Gawayne， what cause haddist thou to sle my good

brother sir Gareth that loved the more than me and all

my kynne? And alas， thou madist hym Knyght thyne

owne hondis! Why slewest thou hym that loved the so

well? (1189)

Gaw丘inは， Gareth を瀦土に叙任したその手で Garethの命を奪った

Lancelotになぜ弟を殺したのかと，詰め寄る.

ローマ教皇の仲介により主妃は，無事 Arthurのもとへかえされるが，

Gawainの Lancelotへの憎しみは死の直前 Lancelot ヘ和睦の手紙を

書くまで決して消えることがない. Gawain は Lancelotに言う.

‘Sir， the kynge may do as he wyll，' seyde sir Gawayne，

‘but wyte thouヰ!Ve11，sir Launcelot， thou and 1 shal1 never

be accorded whyle we lyve， for thon hast slayne three of

my brethyrn. And two of hem thou slew traytourly and

piteuously， for they bare none harneys ayenste the，

nother none wold do.' (1199)

これに対して Lancelotは，神かけて，わざと Gaherisと Gaerthを殺

したのではないと言い Garethの死を悲しむ@

Gawainは Arthurをして Lancelotと戦わしめる.そして Arthur

と Gawainは Lancelotとの戦闘のためにフランスヘ出征する.その間，

国の統治は Mordredの手に委ねられ，好策に長ける彼は王位を築奪し，

王妃までも己が手中におさめようとする. Mordredは ArthurがLan-

celot との戦いで討ち死にしたと国民に思わせ，戴冠式を行う.そして主

妃 Guincuereとの結婚をもくろむ. これに対してキャンタペリーの司教

は Mordredに忠告する.

‘Sir， what wo11 ye do? W 011 ye firste displease God and

sytthyn shame youreselff and all knyghthode? For ys

nat kynge Arthur youre uncle， and no farther but youre

modirs brothir， and uppon her he hymselffe begate you，

uppon hyn own syster? Therefore how may ye wed

Mordredは Arthur とその姉 Morgawse(Arthurの父， Uther

が力ずくで、奪つだ Igrayneとその夫 Tintagel公の聞にできた長女〉と

の近親相姦，不浄の落し子である. Mordredはその出生からして歪んだ

存在である.淫らな欲望の落し子である彼は，人間のもつ醜悪な面をすべ

て背負ってこの世に生れ出たのである.彼は，叔父であり，父親である

Arthurの王妃を掠奪しようとする.絢嬬，勇壮，高遍な理想的社会の汚

れた部分が，白日のもとに曝け出される.悲劇は結末を迎える Merlin

が予言したように叫 Arthur，Mordredの父子は織烈な闘いをくり広げ，

Mordredは死に， Arthurも瀕死の傷を癒すため， Morgan によって，

船で Avalon(1司へ運び去られる.その後， Arthurの家臣 Bedivereは，

もとキャンタペリーの司教であった隠者の庵で， Arthurの死を発見する.

愛欲，殺裁，裏切りが渦巻く Arthur宮廷の悲劇はその幕を閉じる.

この物語では，肉親問の相到，騎士道で結ぼれた同士の対決，裏切りが

くり返される.そのおもなものは， Gawain兄弟のあいだでの感情的組踊，

Lancelotの Gareth殺害， Arthurと Mordredの父子の対決である.

円卓騎士団を構成するのは内的矛盾をもった騎士である.円卓騎士団を象

徴する Lancelot，Gawain聞に生じた友愛の亀裂は，騎士社会の分裂を

意味する.武勲において卓越せる Lancelotも，信仰の面9 すなわち聖杯

探求に失敗し， Gawainの内部にも， Lancelotへの恩義，友愛の念という

騎士精神と， Pellinore殺害や， Garethの死に起因する Lancelotへの

怨念にみられる，禁欲的世界からはみ出す，煮えたぎるような本能が併存

する. Lancelotは王妃 Guinevereとの不義と Gareth殺害によって，

Gawainは短気 (hastyness)と激情 (wylfnlness)によって騎士道から

逸脱する.

Garethは，物語の中では， Lancelctのように宮廷の名声を一身に背

負う人物ではない@だが彼の真撃な態度と悲運の最期は読む者の心をうつ

にちがいない凶， Garethは物語の中では，彼をとりまく人聞の本性を照

らし出す役割を演じる.正義を象徴する Garthは，物語の中で、は，残虐

極まる兄弟たちと対照的に描かれ，彼の存在によれ Gawain兄弟の本性

がよりいっそう鮮明に浮き彫りにされる. Lancelotは Arthur宮廷にお

いては，その武勇，他に並ぶものなき人物である.だが，その武勇を象徴

する剣によって Garethを殺害するのである.Garethの死は， Lancelot

の世俗的栄光がもっ矛盾を我々に示してくれる. Gawain兄弟の正義と理

想的な騎士の化身である Garethの死は，円卓騎士国内の騎士道精神，倫

理的秩序の崩壊を意味する.

Maloryの LeMorte Dartht.げには9 “shame"(耳ら辱〉という言葉が

瀕繁に使われる.今まで述べた出来事も，必ず恥辱がその因をなしている.

騎士社会は名誉を重んじる社会であり，騎士の自負心は，彼を冒険，戦闘

へと駆り立てる.その名誉，自負心を汚すのは恥辱である.残忍な事件は，

恥辱に対する報復に始まる.

λe Morte Darthurを 1485年に印刷Ltこ WilliamCaxtonは， 1495

年には，フランスの女流作家 Christinede Pisanによって151佐紀初頭に

書かれた LeLivre de Paits d' Armes et de Chevalerieを Book01

Payttes 01 Armes and o[ Chyualryeというタイトルのもとに翻訳した，

この中では，正義を守り，圧迫，侵略に対する防衛的戦争は正当とされる

が，復讐，侵略を目的とする戦争は不当なものであれ神の提に反するもの

であると述べられている悦.Gawain， Agravain， Gaheris， Mordred ら

が起した争いはすべて復讐のためのものであわ (Mordredの Arthur

の王位纂奪は侵略に値する)，神の提に反した戦いである.

中世では，信仰と騎士の理念は密接に結びついていた.そのことは騎士

の叙任式と宗教思想との密接な結びつきにも窺い知ることができる側. 神

からの離脱は騎士道からの離脱である.Huizingaは騎士の理念の中にあ

る矛盾を次のように指摘する美しい生活を理想、とする騎士の思想は全

く独特のものである.それは本来いろいろの空想や崇高な感動を織り込ん

だ美的理想であるが，まずこ倫理的理想たらんともしたのである.中世の考

え方では，人生の理想は敬慶と徳義に合致する時にのみ高貴な地位に達L

えたのだ.こうした倫理的機能において，騎士道はいつもやや欠けるとこ

ろがあるようだ.それは罪深い素姓によって引きずり下ろされるのである.

なぜ、なら務士の理想の核心は自負心を美化したものであったから111;.

Caxtonが序文の中で述べているように町 LeiVlorte Darthurには，

礼節， 慈悲，友愛， 勇気9 愛という高週な騎士道精神の世界と，臆病，

殺毅，憎悪，赤裸々な欲望という罪深い人間本性の泥沼の世界がある.円

卓騎士団は9 このどろどろとした汚辱に満ちた人間性の泥沼に浮かぶ.脆

く，こわれやすいうたかたのような理想的騎土社会でしかない.

妖精のすむ Avalonへ船出するとき， Arthurは別れを惜しむ Bedi-

vereに次のような言葉を残す.

Comforte thyse1ff， 'seyde the kynge， 'and do as well as thou

mayste， for in me ys no truste for truste in. For 1 muste

into the vale of A vylyon to he1e me of my grevous

wounde. And if thou here nevermore of me， pray Ior my

soule!' (1240)

Arthurの癒す傷は，円卓騎士団を崩壊に導いた人間に内在する矛盾とい

う深い傷なのである 9 彼の理想とした円卓騎士団は，その内部から瓦解L，

騎士たちの団結をもたらした騎土道精神は，脆くも彼ら自身の手によって

踏み閥られたのである Ma10ryは物語を終えるにあたって神に“good

delyveraunce" (1260)を求める.これは囚人 Maloryの牢獄からの解

放とともに，罪深き人間性の泥沼からの救出をも意味する.
