  • GET READY, GET SET, READ!

October 2011 marks the fifth annual National Reading Group Month, which was founded by the Womens National Book Association to celebrate shared reading, encourage readers to find or start a book group, and to celebrate the accomplishments of reading groups nationwide. Why should you consider joining or starting a reading group, you ask? There are countless reasons!

Its a great way to meet new people with similar interests. A good book group is like continuing education without the hefty price tag, grades, and boring

homework assignments. Sharing book choices with other readers provides the perfect opportunity to broaden your reading. Discussing books with other people can open up whole new ways of thinking. Its trendy! Being a reading group member is like belonging to the worlds largest, friendliest club.

Ready to give it a try? We have resources to help you out!

  • Autumn Leaves

The falling leaves drift by the window, the autumn leaves of red and gold

Autumn leaf color is a phenomenon that affects the normally green leaves of many deciduous trees and shrubs. During the autumn season, trees and shrubs transform into beautiful shades of red and gold.

This display of color will develop as early as mid-September in the northern latitudes of North America and wane toward the end of November in the southern part of the United States. This annual autumn tree leaf change will manifest itself in living fall color through most of October, then wane toward the end of November in the southern part of the United States.

For years, scientists have worked to understand the changes that happen to trees and shrubs this time of year. Three factors influence the color change: leaf pigments, length of night, and weather. The timing of color change and leaf fall are primarily regulated by the calendar, that is, the increasing length of night. None of the other environmental influences, such as temperature, rainfall and food supply, are as unvarying as the steadily increasing length of night during autumn. As days grow shorter, and nights grow longer and cooler, biochemical processes in the leaf begin to paint the landscape with Natures autumn palette.

Your library offers a variety of opportunities to experience one of Natures grandest color displays.
