“Spring is in the air!”

Rev John LavenderSpring is in the air! Isn’t it great?

The winter morning chill is gone. No more ice on the windscreen as you head off to work. Spring is a great time to get outside & do some gardening – to clear out the winter weeds, plant some new plants & even have a go at growing your own veggies! How good do home grown tomatoes taste!

In the Bible’s New Testament gos-pel of Mark, Jesus tells a story about gardening – about growing plants & weeding. He tells of a farmer who planted some seed. As the farmer scattered the seed, some of it ended up on a path where it was eaten by the birds. Other seed fell on rocky places where it grew, but, because the soil was shallow, the plants withered and died. Some seed fell among weeds & thorn bushes, which strangled the plants as they tried to grow. Finally, seed also fell on good soil. Here it grew and produced a great crop.

Jesus told this story to challenge

people to think about his message of life and hope and forgiveness. Are you like the seed that fell on the path? You heard the message of Jesus but you didn’t take it seriously? You ignored it & so the seed has died.

Are you like the seed that fell on a rocky place? You heard Jesus’ mes-sage & thought it was great. You took it to heart & made it part of your life, but when tough times came along, you gave it up. You stopped going to Church or reading the Bible & so the plant withered & you fell away.

Or are you like the seed that fell among thorns? You heard & respond-ed to Jesus’ message & were going along nicely until you were sucked away by the busyness or the short lived & shallow pleasures of this life; sport, work, chasing after mate-rial wealth, which took you away from Church, reading the Bible & praying, ultimately taking you away from your relationship with God?

It is so sad to see people who waste the life giving message of Je-sus in these 3 ways. Make sure you are like the seed that fell into the good soil – hearing & responding to Jesus! Accept it & make Jesus the centre of your life. Say “no” to the rocks, weeds & thorn bushes & don’t let them suck

the life out of you. Keep making sure you are the good soil & watch the seed grow & flourish as you keep Je-sus at the centre of your life. Would you like to know more? Give us a call on 4733 1635.

My nephew asked me to help him pre-pare for taking the exam to get his Learner’s license. So

I said, “OK, what do you do at a red light?” He thought for a second before replying, “I dunno, just look around at people in other cars… listen to the radio..”

It’s the end of the school life of many Year 12 kids in our area and October 14th is like a Doom’s-day for them as they cram for what possibly could be the most significant exams of their life. It’s a pressure that teen-agers don’t need at this point of their lives. They have enough to worry about with pimples and part-time jobs and the noisy little brothers and sisters who don’t understand what achieving that desired UAI number really means. Over the years I have been involved with a number of families whose chil-dren have committed suicides which could be directly attributed to the ten-sion these exams cause in a person’s

family life and friendships. So what should you do to help? If

you are a parent the best thing you can do is understand. You may not think being a teenager is a lot of pres-sure (compared to what you are go-ing through), but for them, this is the most pressure they have ever experienced.

I remember visiting a parishioner in hospital and when I had finished, another lady in the opposite bed mo-tioned me to come over to her. “Do you only visit Catholics or would you mind chatting with me for a minute?” Of course I welcomed speaking with her. She said, “One day my 16 year old daughter came home from school and told me that Grant had ‘dropped’ her. I was rushing to do my shift at the hospital where I was a nurse so I said dismissively “Don’t worry Michelle, you are only 16. You have your whole life in front of you.. you are a pretty girl and you will get another boyfriend. Bye, I have to run”. When I came home that night I found a note on the table saying, “Well Mum, I may be only 16 but I will never get any older and I will never get another boyfriend. Thanks for not caring!” I found her hanging in the garage. Please tell parents to always listen to their kids.

I have regretted not listening to my daughter for over 30 years.” Those haunting words of advice have always rung in my ears around this time of the year as parents complain that a drama is unfolding in their house over the HSC.

So for whatever reason teenag-ers think that things will never get any better than they are, or that this exam equals determining the rest of their life’s agenda, it is up to you to try to show your kids that you love them un-conditionally and that life’s value is not able to be evaluated by an exam. And always give your kids the reassurance that God is always there to help when the pressure gets too great.

Spring Gardening with Glenmore NurseryOctober is when a large number

of indigenous plants are out in flower. Natives require less water than exot-ics and encourage birds into the gar-den. They prefer a slow release fer-tiliser or blood and bone, as they are sensitive to phosphorous. Take note of the natives that are flowering in your neighbourhood.

Many of the garden pests are now active so keep a look out for them. Plan your prevention or your attack. Hopefully you have treated your lawns for weeds, and fertilised them. Any plants that have been affected by frost can now be pruned. Deadhead spring annuals and liquid feed for further blooms. Plant passion fruit, and your second crop of tomatoes, cumcumber,

zucchini, lettuce etc. Apply liquid fertiliser to veggies and flowers every two weeks. Start mulching to prepare for the hotter weather.

Wallacia Ladies Lawn Bowls

Tanya Kelly, Kerrie Quinn and Tra-cy Smith from Wallacia Bowling Club recently entered the District Triples Championships for “a bit of fun” and ended up winning the event. They then progressed to the Zone Champion-ships which they also won. From there they went on to represent the Zone at the State Championships at Forster but were unfortunately defeated.

This was a great achievement for these girls, 2 of whom have only been

bowling for a couple of years. The average age of the team was

less than 40 which goes to show that you don’t have to wait to retire to play bowls. On that note Wallacia Womens Bowling Club is urgently seeking new bowling members.

Our play days are Thursdays from 10am and Saturdays from 1pm (for those ladies who work during the week) but we also have Social Mixed Bowls on Friday afternoons at 5pm ( Daylight Saving Time) and Sunday Mornings at 9am (includes breakfast.) If you aged between 14 and 114 and think you may be interested in playing please come along to an

Open Day on Saturday 20th November at 12 o’clock.1 Roma Ave, Wallacia.

We will introduce you to the con-cept of bowls and give you some prac-tical instruction in the game. You don’t need any special gear on the day. You can play barefoot and we will provide you with bowls.

If you are interested please call the Wallacia Bowling Club on 4773 8096 to register so that we have a general idea of numbers. If you would like any further information please call Sue Ashurst on 0419 012 915.

Bargain Baby & Kids Goods in Penrith

With over 60 stalls to choose from, the Baby & Kids Market is the perfect place to stock up on furniture, prams, toys, clothes, books and just about anything imaginable for babies and children – without it costing the earth. With stallholders selling their ‘gently used’ wares at very reason-able prices.

Anne Lewis, the Market’s founder says. “You’ll find fantastic pre-loved brand name items in top condition, and often save around 70% off the retail price. Our stallholders are par-ents who want to find good homes for things their families no longer use and earn some money at the same time”. Whether you need to furnish the entire nursery for a baby on the way, or are looking to fill your three-year-old’s toy box or stock up on clothes for a fast-growing five-year-old, you’re bound to find exactly what you need.

“We all want the best stuff for our kids, but don’t want to waste money or add to landfill. Kids grow so fast that some items barely get used be-fore they’ve outgrown them. Buying

‘gently used’ goods like high chairs, prams, bikes, cots, toys, change ta-bles, playpens, clothes and DVDs from other parents makes perfect sense.

Schools Writers’ Festival

Students from the local primary schools that feed into Glenmore Park High wrote poetry for the event. Each school selected students to represent their school at the festival.

On the night of the festival all the eager poets and their families lis-tened to guest speaker Steven Her-rick speak about writing and recite some of his poems. Steven Herrick lives in the mountains and is a pub-lished children’s author and poet. The students were then divided into small groups so they could read their own poetry to students from other

schools and their families. Afterwards students were presented with a certifi-cate and a book containing all the stu-dents’ poems by the guest speaker. Dur-ing supper many of the students took the opportunity to get Steven Herrick to sign their books. The night was a great oppor-tunity to recognise students with an inter-est and talent in writing.

Your Family Questions AnsweredWelcome to Advantage Psychology Glenmore Park. We are

a team of clinical psychologists specialising in child, adolescent and adult mental health. These are some of the questions that our Psychologists assist with:

• How do I talk to my child/adolescent about sex?It is important that the ‘sex’ talk is not avoided as your

children will learn that some topics are ‘off bounds’ instantly shutting down communication channels. It is also important to discuss sex with children so that they learn the appropriate information from an adult and not their friends. Take this as an opportunity to communicate your values about sex. Use age appropriate language and label body parts as they are. Relax and have a sense of humour.

• My teenager might be taking drugs, what do I do?It is important to talk openly to teenagers about drugs and

alcohol. Teenagers’ brains are still developing, alcohol and substance use can be very detrimental to the developing teenage brain. In fact, teenagers that engage in substance use are more likely to develop addictions because their brain is more vulnerable to the ‘highs’ they may experience when consuming a substance. If you suspect that your adolescent is engaging in substance use, openly discuss the matter with them and have them see a professional. There should be a zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol in your home, we have personally encouraged the use of breathalysers after parties to ensure adolescents are compliant, in families we have worked with.

• My husband and I seem to be drifting apart, should we seek counselling?

There are many reasons why the two of you may be drifting apart, perhaps it is a communication problem, perhaps there is a history of significant stressors that are unresolved, it is always best to see a marriage counsellor for an exploration of what the underlying problem may be. However often ‘time’ plays a huge role. When was the last time you went on a date with your husband? Have you noticed that your relationship has deteriorated since increased work responsibilities? What were you doing early on in the relationship that worked for the two of you? Our advice to clients is to nurture their relationship. Make time to go out on a date at least once a month, look after yourself and your appearance in the ways you used to when you first started going out, talk to each other about anything but the kids when you go on dates, surprise each other with a note or a message.

• How can I tell if my husband is depressed?Depression in men often manifests differently than in

women. Aggression as a symptom of underlying depression is very common in men. Additional signs include social withdrawal, fatigue, irritability, sadness, weight loss or gain, difficulty with sleep. Men find it difficult to seek psychological intervention due to the social stigma associated with men and talking about their problems. We would like to encourage all men to take a step in changing this unhelpful stigma and model appropriate coping behaviour by acknowledging where help is due.

Please note that the advice provided in this column is very basic and does not take into account an individual’s situational circumstances. For individual advice please contact the Advantage Psychology office on 9623 0270 for an assessment.

Sing and Be HappyMen of all ages. Do you like singing? Consider joining a

local chorus that sings in four part harmony in Barbershop style. Penrith City Harmony Chorus is holding a Visitors Night on Monday 18th October at the John Lees Centre, Evan Street, Penrith from 7:00p.m.

The Penrith City Harmony Chorus has been singing for over twenty years, performing in competitions and singing to entertain community groups and at corporate functions. Community singing is a great pastime for men of all ages. Family men might enjoy an evening’s break from the kids, and older men might be looking for a retirement interest. Medical research shows that singing helps you keep your mind sharp and contributes to general well-being. You can make new friends and enjoy the adrenalin rush that comes from performing before an audience.

Barbershop singing is a Capella style (no music accom-paniment) and the beautiful blends come from the bass, baritone, lead and tenor voices. The repertoire is exten-sive and includes Beach Boys, Beatles and Everly Broth-ers songs. We also sing favourites such as Danny Boy, Do You Hear the People Sing from Les Miserables and What

a Wonderful World. Come along to our Visitors Night and see what you think. For further enquiries phone Paul Ryan 47352637 or Russell Davies 47351154.

Accessing 24 Hour Health Advice NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Health, Carmel

Tebbutt, has reminded families heading off on holidays about the convenience of accessing health advice through the 24-hour health hotline, healthdirect Australia.

Families holidaying in NSW, ACT, NT, SA, WA and Tas-mania can access the hotline – which is answered by regis-tered nurses – by calling 1800 022 222.

“The NSW Government contributes more than $12 mil-lion each year to ensure NSW families have immediate ac-cess to health information and advice from registered nurs-es around the clock,” Ms Tebbutt said.“It is important that people with a health emergency still call triple zero, but for other health enquiries the healthdirect Australia number is the ideal number to call, at any time of the day or night.

“This is an excellent service used regularly by families at home, but it can also be particularly valuable for parents who need healthcare advice while in unfamiliar areas, such as when on holidays.”

All calls to healthdirect Australia are answered by regis-tered nurses, who are supported by up-to-date computer-based clinical resources, as well as an electronic directory of local services and facilities.

Those requiring follow up treatment are advised where and when they can seek help.

Calls to healthdirect Australia from landlines are free of charge, but from mobile phones charges may apply.

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Renovations

Since I purchased the veterinary hospital in January 2010, we have been busy reorganising and painting the premises every weekend.

A friend of mine, Pete, has been the handyman to help out during the reno-vation process. Even the nurses have helped out by preparing the walls dur-ing the week, so we can maximise the painting times on the weekends.

After consulting on Saturday morn-ing we work through to Sunday lunch-time, and it looks like a bomb has gone off here. We have been busy renovating the hospital including: patching holes, sanding, gyprocking walls, putting up shelves, installing new cupboards, mov-ing things around, moving power points, and had new drainage installed so the veterinary hospital does not flood when it rains. Then on Sunday night we clean the hospital ready for Monday morning again.

New cupboards have been made to store stock and equipment. This makes the rooms easier to clean and keeps it looking tidy.

The walls have been freshly painted which has brightened the appearance of the hospital greatly. It took three coats of paint to cover the original green walls

and dark brown window frames, skirting boards and door jams.

To minimise the spread of infection from animal to animal, we disinfect the floors several times a day. The ken-nel room floors have been acid washed and freshly painted with a paving paint, which makes it so much easier to clean the floors daily. The new paving paint has made cleaning a breeze.

It has been fun changing things around on the weekends, and then on Monday when the nurses arrive they look forward to discovering what chang-es have been made. It became a game between me and the nurses, to see how long it took them to notice that some-thing had been moved or changed or painted. Sometimes they did not notice some of the smaller changes until mid week. Which was hilarious, when out of the blue they would call out, “Hey, did you change this last weekend?”.

Thank you to all of our clients who have offered their handy hints through-out the renovation process. It has been very helpful. Of course, it would have have been more helpful if you had of-fered to help paint. Ha Ha!

Bella and Pony who are my dogs, usually come to the veterinary hospi-tal every day with me. During the reno-vation process I left the dogs at home on the weekends as we did not want

to get dog hair on the freshly painted walls. Can you imagine Pony stepping in a paint tray and turning into a Dalma-tion?? I can!

I have 2 pet sheep at home, who are probably hanging out for me to fin-ish painting, so they can have peaceful weekends again, rather than be chased the yard around by Pony.

Now that the veterinary hospital is freshly painted, new artwork has been hung. It has been a dream of mine for years to have David Darcy prints on my hospital walls and my dream has finally been realised. David Darcy grew up in Springwood and is the best selling au-thor/photographer of 4 books, includ-ing Mongrel Country. His pictures are breath taking! Come and see the beau-tiful pictures by David Darcy, we have 4 of them. Let us know which picture is your favorite!

Renovations still to come, include a fenced off back yard. I am sure we will find more things to change/adjust/mod-ify/paint, as any renovation is a work in progress and is never ending!

Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.
