Dealing with Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety are two major issues impacting people today. You don’t have to look very far to find someone who is struggling to deal with this. Depression and anxiety are robbing people of quality of life. They are breaking down relationships and causing great suffering and pain. How can you deal with it? What is the best way forward? Does being a Christian person make a difference? What does God, in his Bible, have to say to us about these trou-bling issues?

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we firmly believe that the Bible has something to say in all areas of life. It is important to get medical or professional help for depres-sion and anxiety - but also read these great words of strength and comfort..Consider for example, the words of the Apostle Peter, “Cast all your anxiety on God because he cares for you.” What a great prom-ise! And the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your re-quests to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” There are also many parts of the Old Tes-tament Psalms which are helpful. Consider Psalm 40; “...the Lord turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the mud and the mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth.of praise to God.”

On Wednesday 22nd September at 7.30pm we have noted Clinical Psychologist, Colleen Hirst coming to speak at our Women’s Coffee & Dessert Night, on this important topic “Supporting Friends with Depression & Anxiety.” This is will be a great night! It will only cost $5 and there will also be some yummy healthy (and not so healthy!) desserts to enjoy! If you’d like to know more or would like to book your spot, give us a call on 4733 1635.

International Recognition for Glenmore Park Professor

Dr Kailasapathy’s award was the American Dairy Science Association ‘Danisco International Dairy Scientist of the Year’. Dr Kailasapathy was recognised for his contribution to under-standing the health benefits of probiotic bacteria which he has been researching for nearly 20 years.

“Basically it’s all about how good bacteria can help in fight-ing colon cancer and other intestinal diseases,” he said. “This technology prevents good bacteria from being killed in the heat.”

Yoghurt is one of the easiest ways to promote a healthy bacterial culture for humans, though special probiotic products were better and should be taken for at least six months to re-ceive the full benefit.

“Research is expanding so fast that one of the biggest cola manufacturers in the world is planning to produce a soft drink with healthy bacteria,” he said.

Dr Kailasapathy, his wife and two daughters are original-ly from Sri Lanka. They moved to Sydney in 1998 from New Zealand and lived in South Penrith. In 1992 they moved to Glenmore Park.

Dr Kailasapathy is an Associate Professor at the University of Western Sydney.

I was comforting a man whose wife has just died a week ago and as he sat staring forlornly into his tea cup he said, “You know Kevin, life is like a cup of tea..” “How is that Peter?” I asked. “I don’t know..” he said. I’m not a philosopher!”

The most common question I am asked after “How can you live without sex?” is “What is the meaning of life?” People often ask this question after someone they love dies. What was the meaning of this per-son’s life? Why did they live? Everyone seems to assume that “Everything happens for a reason.” I don’t agree. Life is full of accidents. Some parents introduce their children to me like this: “Here is Dan he’s 22, this is Mary she is 20 and this is Darryl he is 8 and he was an accident”. I would hate to be the kid whose parents think of him as an accident. It’s like saying, “We wanted Dan & Mary but we just had to ac-cept you!”

Does life have a meaning? Do we have to know what is God’s plan for everything? I don’t know. All I do know is that if God does have a plan, we need to try to fit in, instead of asking God to make His plan revolve around us. Some people tell me they are praying to become an Accountant or a Chef or something equally prestigious. But I ask them, “Have you ever prayed for God to show you what HE wants you to be?”

I meet a lot of disappointed people, some even describe themselves as “depressed” because life didn’t turn out as they expected or hoped. Often a relationship failed or they lost their job and they get depressed. I face many disap-pointments. A lot of what I plan doesn’t turn out as I expect-ed but I don’t get depressed. The reason is, when things don’t work out as I had hoped I turn to God and put the question back to Him, “OK, so that didn’t work. What’s your next plan?”

I am fairly confident that God uses me for His work be-cause I ask Him every day to show me whose life I should be touching and whom He wants me to talk to. It happens quite randomly at times when I just feel drawn to talk to this person or that but in the end I see it was not coincidental. God really does show us the way when we ask Him “What can I do for you?” instead of “this is what I want YOU to do for ME!”

Glenmore Park High School

NewsAfter several months

of construction Glenmore Park High School now has four of the best equipped

Science laboratories in the country! The new format will greatly assist our dedicated teachers in their quest to provide more practical activities and experiments as a part of the subject. Also with the construction site now cleared away, students are preparing the agricultural plot for raising crops and livestock as an extension of Science.

Year 10 student Laura Mitchell has the honour of being selected as a Student Ambassador representing the city of Penrith and Glenmore Park High School this year.

Penrith City Council and the Penrith International Friend-ship Committee conduct an annual Student Ambassador Program with its Sister City in Fujieda, Japan. The program provides an opportunity for a maximum of six youths from each city to live with a typical Australian or Japanese fam-ily for three weeks and experience a different lifestyle and culture.

Eri Tanishita, from Japan recently spent three weeks liv-ing with Laura. During her time in Australia she was taken to various places of interest in Sydney and Canberra also visited our school to practice her English language skills. At the end of September, Laura will travel to Fujieda, Japan to stay with Eri and her family, and experience day to day ac-tivities in the home and gain an understanding and respect for Japanese culture and lifestyle. She will also visit Tokyo and Hiroshima as part of her experience.

PanarottisPanarottis is located inside the Panthers complex and

has been a favourite with Glenmore Park locals for many years. The General Managers of Panarottis Penrith, Greg and Colean, are Glenmore Park locals themselves and have been living in the area for the past six years. “We have many regular Panarottis customers from Glenmore Park who we often bump into when we do the groceries or walk our dogs. We love the sense of community in the area and are always happy to seen familiar faces returning to Panarottis time and time again.” said Greg and Colean.

It has been just over a year since Panarottis reopened in the refurbished Penrith Panthers complex. The new Panarot-tis restaurant opened with a bang in April 2009, continuing its trade within the Panthers complex, where it first opened in 2000. Panarottis Penrith General Manager, Greg Izzett said that while the layout of the restaurant was very different, the popular menu has stayed true to its original form. “The menu has all the classic favourites such as the ‘Mobster’: the best Meatlovers pizza you’ll ever taste, and a few new additions such as the ‘Inferno’ for those who like something hot and spicy,” he said. Panarottis is not only known for their mouth-watering Pizzas and Pastas, they also serve delicious Steak, Poultry and Seafood dishes. Panarottis also has a dedicated Kids Menu and kids activities to make sure the whole family is happy.

Panarottis is a restaurant that truly has something to suit everyone. Whether it is a business lunch, dinner with the family or a Christmas party celebration with a large group booking, Panarottis will be able organise something to suit your needs. Give Greg and Colean a call and they will be sure to look after you. Panarottis Penrith phone 4720 5522.

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

The RSPCAThe RSPCA is the Royal Society

for the Prevention of Cruelty to Ani-mals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection.

The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the com-munity – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, dona-tions, fundraising, corporate partner-ships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work.

What a great day we had fundrais-ing for the RSPCA CupCake Day on 16 August!! We had a great turnout with so many clients popping in to sup-port a great cause! It was so much fun to hear the laughter, smell the coffee brewing, eat a cupcake (or two) and have a chat.

The nurses (Justine and Carly) made the cupcakes and spent hours decorating them, and they looked great. There were cupcakes decorated as ladybirds, echidnas, bears, tigers, spiders, snakes, rabbits, butterflies, frogs and flowers.

Our other nurse Belinda, who says she cannot cook, made the Pupcakes

and the dogs judged her as a winner cook. The Pupcakes were such a suc-cess that we included the recipe for you, so every day can be Cupcake Day for you and your pets.

Animals should not eat cupcakes unless they are specially made with safe, animal friendly ingredients. Chocolate is especially toxic to many animals!

Remember, Pupcakes are special treats and shouldn’t be fed to your dog regularly!

This recipe makes around 12-14 Pupcakes.

Ingredients2 ¾ cups water¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce¼ cup oats4 cups wholemeal flour1 cup fresh diced apple1 teaspoon baking powder1 cage free egg, beaten slightly4 tablespoons honeyMethodPreheat oven to 175 degrees Cel-

sius. Spray muffin tins with cooking oil.Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly.

Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry ingre-dients slowly and mix well.

Pour into muffin tins and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Once the Pupcakes have cooled, you can ice the Pupcakes with smooth peanut butter.

We wish to thank everyone who generously donated to the RSPCA on Cupcake Day. We wish everyday could be Cupcake Day as it was so much fun!

We are already dreaming up new cupcake icing designs in preparation for next year’s RSPCA Cupcake Day.

Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.

Guide Dog puppy raising volunteers Guide Dogs NSW/ACT is currently

seeking volunteer families or individu-als in the Penrith region who can pro-vide a caring home for a Guide Dog puppy for a year.

After a year with a Puppy Raiser, the pups return to Guide Dogs NSW/ACT where they are trained for their very important careers providing inde-pendent mobility for someone who is blind or has impaired vision.

“There are many reasons why peo-ple offer to become volunteer Puppy Raisers,” said Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Puppy Raising Co-ordinator Karen Hayter. “The role might suit someone who doesn’t want the lifetime commit-ment that goes with having a dog of their own.

“Others feel it is a good way to as-sist a worthwhile community service, as Guide Dogs NSW/ACT does not receive any government funding to provide its free services to people with impaired vision. We rely on the public’s support, including that of Puppy Raisers to con-tinue providing our vital services.

“Whatever the reason, Puppy Rais-ers find the experience rewarding and are extremely proud if their puppy

“graduates” as a Guide Dog.”Puppy Raisers need to have a

properly fenced backyard and access to a car. They also cannot leave the pup alone for longer than three to four hours at a time to ensure they have plenty of time to spend with the pup.

The pup’s food is provided free, along with veterinary care, and Puppy Raisers are fully supported by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT supervisors.

If you would like to become a Puppy Raiser and help provide Guide Dogs to people who are blind or have impaired vision, please contact Karen Hayter, Puppy Raising Co-ordinator at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT on 4579-7555.

Did you know it takes almost two years and costs around $30,000 to raise and train a Guide Dog.
