"What will the future bring?"The prognoses have changed since the middle of thisyear for the world's economy. The growth prognoseshave been retracted since September of this year dueto the financial crisis. The initial indicators for a reces-sion can be clearly seen today. The view into the future still however looks to be posi-tive for the NEA GROUP. Due to the world-wide decen-tralized organisation structure and cross-linking of thesales and marketing activities it has been possible inthe current business year, to obtain contracts, whosedelivery suffices until the middle of 2010. In total a con-tractual intake could be booked, which far exceeds theturnover of the previous year. Two years ago we had even recognized that the factorof delivery deadlines was becoming more and more afocal point for the customer. We came to the decisionat an early enough point in time to replace existinglathes and manufacturing centers through modern andefficient machines. This ensures that the manufac-turing processes could be tightened up, whilst still re-taining the quality and the output from the Germanproduction companies which could be appreciablyincreased. Irrespective of this we will keep our ears to the groundconcerning the world-wide economic situation. We willnot allow our optimismand belief in our mar-ket to be stolen throughthe partially negativeoversubscribed positionthrough the media. In this publication we willdeal with in detail notonly the investments inour machine park inGermany but also theexpansion of our loca-tion in Thailand. That isalso only the beginningof our investments, which we have plannedfor our local locations.

terms with this material increase is the expansion andoptimization of the company internal logistics. Especiallythe huge number of large and heavy castings gives anincrease in spatial area requirements. Through thereconstruction of an existing storage hall and the con-struction of a further hall, approximately 1,600 m2 floorstorage space has been created so that we NEA meetwith this requirement. The production area for the me-chanical production has also experienced a noticeable

increase through the expansion by a further 800 m2.Alongside the reconstruction and new construction ofproduction and storage areas, NEA must also considerhere the shortening of manufacturing times as well asthe implementation of the complete processing of keycomponents in its own factory. Already in the previousyear, with this as a background, two investment deci-sions were agreed. Hereby NEA is dealing with the pro-curement of a new processing center from the com-pany Starrag Heckert as well as a crankshaft grindingmachine. The new processing center will be utilized forthe manufacture of cylinders and the intermediate sto-rage for component parts. Initial experiences at themachine factory in Wurzen, Germany, shows that manu-facturing times have been appreciably shortenedwhen compared with other machines. Crankshaftswith a total length of up to 6 meters can be ground on

The production facility has doubled in workshop spacewith the opening of the new fabrication shop in the firstquarter of 2008. This has permitted segregation of thewelding from the assembly process, which now takesplace exclusively in the original workshop facility. Theincreased workshop area has been supplemented by alarge lay-down area outside and to the front of bothshops, which facilitates material handling and will beused for the construction of the two very large off-shorepackages for our Middle East customer. Overall, thisproduction space expansion has more than tripled thepackaging capacity of NEA South East Asia.

For the aftermarket, NEA South East Asia has, since itsinception, encouraged customers to establish long termservice agreements with our after-market department.

As part of these agree-ments, specific cus-

tomer spares areheld at the NEA

South East Asia warehouse facility for fast dispatch tothe customer as required. Typically, these spare partsare held at no extra charge until required, at which timethe customer is charged for restock of the items. Thisarrangement has proven advantageous for both thecustomer in terms of quicker access to spare partswithout major capital investment, but also logistically toNEA South East Asia for service department manpowerplanning.

Also from its establishment, NEA South East Asia hasprovided compressor valve overhaul facilities to itscustomers. These facilities are now being updated withstate-of-the-art repair, testing and packaging systems.NEA South East Asia customers will now be able to takeadvantage of very fast, guaranteed valve repairs andimmediate access to valve repair kits. The facility isbeing set up with dedicated workshop and storageareas, and will be staffed by technicians trained at ourEuropean valve supplier. Each overhaul valve will betested and issued with its own certified test certificateand of course NEA's guarantee of quality.

the crankshaft grinding machine. An important corecomponent of the machine can therefore, in connectionwith the turning/grinding center, be completely manu-factured here in house. Both machines are currentlybeing assembled in the mechanical manufacturingdepartment, so that processing can be started up in allprobability at the end of this year. Oct. 23rd, 2008 recorded the most interesting chapter inthe history of the machine factory as Alexander Peters,Managing Partner, and Dr. Norbert Hennes from Droop

+ Rein signed a contract for purchase of approximately5 million EUR for a portal grinding machine - withoutdoubt, to date, the largest investment decision, whichhad been taken in the house of NEA for a tooling machi-ne. This machine, which will replace the "Heavycut", hasa table capacity of 40 gross tons and can with that, without any problem process crankcases with a construc-tion size of up to SL500. Furthermore this machine offersappreciably shortened processing times in comparison toHeavycut.

LATEST NEWS ON NEA GROUP

NEAC on an InvestigativeMission in Chad

In Chad, six NEA compressors ofsize 63 and 130 are processingcarrier gas from their own oilresources which is used in theirown power production plant. Afterfive years of operation, a pistondamage in one of its machinesmade NEA suddenly aware of com-munication problems. HarryLankenau and Timo Kitschentravelled to the customer, one of theworld's leading oil and gas produ-cers, in order to get an idea on thespot picture of the problem. It wasquickly clear that the factory re-quired commercial as well as tech-nological support. While HarryLankenau interviewed the techni-cians, Timo Kitschen dealt with thepurchasing and materials dispat-chers and took a stock inventory ofspare parts for input in their SAPsystem.

Shortly after their return, they re-ceived a tremendous series oforders: a package valued at aroundhalf a million EUR, which containsan extensive root cause analysis, spare parts, an overhaul of twomachines as well as on site trainingfor 10 technicians. After completingtheir training in January 2009, threeof the customers' technicians willhave the chance to put their theore-tical training into practice on eachof the overhauled machines.

Follow-up Contract forCompressor System at theLargest Underground Fieldin EuropeNow that the final NEA compressorfrom three machines has been suc-cessfully taken into operationssince October this year for filling ofnatural gas into the third storagecavern with 230 bar dischargepressure at the cavern field of Epe,the German energy supplier sur-prised NEA Deutschland inNovember of this year with a follow-up contract.

In cooperation with this gas sup-plier an innovative compressorsystem concept for the second con-struction stage of the gas storagecavern has been prepared. Whilstthe first cavern facilitates over aworking gas volume of approxima-tely 130 million m³ of natural gasand approximately 150,000 m³natural gas per hour feeding and upto 300,000 m³ per hour flushing, thetotal for the second cavern is to beincreased in total to a working gasvolume with 240 million m³.

The advantage of the new com-pressor is that close to 80% of itswear parts are identical with thoseof the currently utilized machines, even though the volume flow hasbeen increased by 50%. From thisthe construction of a 320-scale six-crank compressor with 500 kN rodload was created. The economiccomplete concept was also herebytaken into consideration in theenergy production as well as in theoptimal design for the compressordrive.

NEA's Biggest Hydrogen Compressors for Petrobras

Petrobras, in accordance with itsmodernization and expansion plansfor its refining activities, is promo-ting the implementation of theAbreu e Lima Refinery which hastwo Diesel HDT (hydro-treatment)units. The bid for the engineeringand construction of the new unitswas performed amongst Petrobras'Engineering Dept, while the mainequipment was directly acquired bythe Materials Dept.

Within this context, in March 2008Petrobras' Materials sector issuedan international invitation, givingbirth to the process of acquisitionand later receipt and analysis of theproposals for compressors tooperate at this plant.

As soon as the technical analysisand commercial discussion stageswere concluded, on Aug. 1st, 2008NEA América do Sul received theauthorization for supplying thecompressors.

NEA Italia on the Overtaking Lane

In addition to the positive results ofNEA Italia in 2008, one of the mostinteresting orders has been placedby an important company, whichoperates as the EPC contractor inthe Middle East, with its center inSharjah (UAE) for a GTP, GasTreatment Plant, at Jihar. The scope of supply includes tworecycle compressors of size 320,three gas compressors of size 500and three more ones of size 30 forauxiliary gas services and spareparts.Due to the structure of this EPCcontractor, the engineering portionof this project will be very detailed, requiring intensive effort on the partof the technical department of NEAItalia.

77

The furnishing refers to six NEAcompressors of size 500 designedaccording to the requirements ofAPI618 as well as to Petrobras'Standards and specific require-ments laid down for this application.

After field assembly, each compres-sor unit will occupy an area ofapproximately 300 m2 (25 x 12 m),with an approximate weight of 100tons each.

Thescope of supply alsocomprises of all auxiliary and peripheral units, suchas electrical motors and the respec-tive excitation panels, crankcaselube oil units, cylinder water coolingunits, inlet strainers, condensateseparators, pulsation suppressors, gas coolers, continuous capacitycontrol safety valves, retention val-ves, command and control panelsand instrumentation according toPetrobras' requirements, compri-sing of dedicated PLC's and redun-dant CPU's as well as mechanicaland electric interconnections andtheir auxiliary units.

Petrobras´ decision once againreinforces the already renownedtechnical capacity and commercialcompetitiveness of NEA Américado Sul, these being the largestcompressors ever supplied by anational supplier.

Biggest Six-Crank 500 Frame Installation in Asia

Back in 2006, NEA South East Asiawas delighted to be able to an-nounce the saleof the biggest sixcrank 500 framein the territory.Following ship-ment at the be-ginning of this yearfrom the manu-facturing works inGermany, the com-pressor is nowbeing installed a-long with all ancil-lary equipment ata customer's sitein Taiwan. Theinstallation of thishuge machinehas involved ex-pertise from boththe machine fac-tory and from wit-hin the NEASouth East Asia organization. Thesite team is headed up by KenGould who, with over 35 years'experience in reciprocatingmachinery, has beenresident at the customer'ssite

for a total of over 10 weeks. Withless than four weeks to go tomechanical completion, activity atthe site is reaching a peak and willsoon enter a new phase of precom-missioning and commissioning. Asthe pictures below show, nearly allof the large equipment and pipe-work is in place and the team isworking hard towards a successfulstart-up before the end of the year.

The development of new product qualities is connectedwith process development and optimization. The tech-nical process for air classification has won greatly ininfluence over the previous years. The technology for airclassification was evenpracticed by the ancientEgyptians, when bymeans of the wind "thewheat was separatedfrom the chaff". With airclassification solid isscreened according to itsparticle size, to be exactdue to their different sett-ling velocities in the airflow. Thereby the particlesize distribution of the pro-duct is varied, which has asubstantial influence onthe product characteris-tics. It is possible therebyto influence amongstothers for example thecolor, the surface gloss, the flavour or the flowabili-ty of bulk goods.

Nowadays the classification of solids with sizes of10 µm down to a few micrometres is considered to bethe state of the art. Classifier wheels are utilized for thispurpose. The core unit of the classifier wheel is therotor which has baffles inside and can run up to100 m/s, meaning 360 km/h. Classification technology also plays an important role atNEA, which is reflected by the classification develop-ment that has taken place over the previous years. Thedevelopment step from static to dynamic classification, the impeller wheel classifier, brought advantages withreference to product fineness and the possible solidthroughput.

Rock Phosphate for a Better ResultThe steady growth in the world population and theincreasing use of agricultural land for renewable rawmaterials for fuel and energy generation requires in-creasing harvest volumes. However as the availablespace is limited in terms of expansion, higher yields areneeded, which will lead to an increasing consumption ofmineral fertilizers. This prompted our customer in Egypt to invest in theexpansion of existing phosphate production. NEAreceived the contract for manufacture and delivery ofthree PM30 Pendulum Mills for the grinding of rockphosphate. The PM30 Pendulum Mill is currently thelargest of the machines built by the NEA. This was inmany ways a highlight. It was not just the single biggestcontract in the history of NEA Mahl- und Sichtsysteme.Rather, the number of PM30s was abruptly doubled, and the position and competence of NEA as large-scalemanufacturer was expanded. The customer's requestthat the entire manufacturing area be kept dust-freemeant a special challenge, and required an increasedlevel in the use of measuring and monitoring equipmentas well as an intelligent control and regulating concept.Following commissioning in 2009, these plants will becounted among the most advanced raw phosphategrinding systems in the world. Evidently convinced by NEA's competence, NEA hasrecently received, from the same customer, new con-tracts to upgrade two of the existing PM20 Pendu-lum Mills built in 1988 according to the above-mentioned concept.

“Sharp” Appearance at the POWTECH 2008The company NEA Grinding and Classifying Systemspresented themselves with a new and attractive tradefair stand layout. With the motto "Sharp classification"there were not only spicy chilli's to offer but also thenewest developments from the NEA classifying tech-nology.The inside rotor of the pendulum roller mill PM12U5was amongst the main attractions at the trade fair anddrew the interest of a multitude of visitors. Especiallylarge interest arose from the improved pendulumdesign, which is designed for a far quicker exchange ofthe grinding roll. This ensures highly reduced standstilland maintenance times. The large number of contactsmade also brought a high number of promising newprojects. A contract for the new ICM 76/96 as well asfor the conversion of pendulums to the new grinding rollmountings was the crowning of the success for thetrade fair appearance.

The cyclone classifier is utilized at NEA-plants for clas-sification within the finest range. Optimization of theproduct feed and the classifier wheel geometry led tothe cyclone classifiers of generation II.

The cyclone classifier of generation III has just beendeveloped. This air classifier generation will, as with allNEA-cyclone classifiers, be operated as an inline-airclassifier combined with the plant components classifiermill, cyclone and filter. The special feature for genera-tion III is the increase in efficiency or the sharpness ofclassification, which facilitates for a strong reduction offine material in the 10 µm-particle size range whilstretaining the same product yield. The efficiency isespecially reflected when considering the low materialloss. This grading led to a lowering of material loss ofup to 8%, which means with a middle production total of500 kg/h a minimum cost saving of at least 16,000 EURmonthly.

The innovation has been evaluated by the Europeanpatent Authorities as so important that NEA was grantedthe patent for the cyclone classifier generation III onJune 30th, 2008.

"We talk recips" at the Turbo Show 2008With this message Manfred Salgert and BrianBertelsen, both Presidents of NEUMAN & ESSERGROUP in USA, signalled the trade fair visitors that thisis the specialist language, which they speak as wellas their own mothertongue. The exhibit, a horizontaltwo-crank compressor ofsize 130 with open vie-wing positions proved tobe the attraction magneton the fair stand. Both20-scale and 500-scaleconnecting rods - display-ed as a mirror image forthe production band width- amazed many people.Despite hurricane Ike,which caused the tradefair to close a day early, the Texan colleagueswere extremely happyabout the multitude ofdiscussions that tookplace concerning newprojects. The sales engi-neers of NEA USA arereally excited about their"Compressor Day" onDec. 3rd, 2008, which willoffer a good opportunityof more in depth discussions concerning the projectcontents at their new company premises in Katy, TX.

NEA's Engineers' MeetingThe annual NEA Engineers' Meeting was again thisyear, with its comprehensive agenda a great success. The first days were completely utilized for covering thefuture plant development. Special attention was there-by paid to the monitoring of current projects from a tech-nical as well as commercial point of view. Following the presentation by all Sales & ApplicationCenters participants concerning their systems for con-tract monitoring Central Division of Technolgoy andSTASSKOL presented a report concerning the corepoints of their newest research. The day's excursion to the major gas supplier Trianel inEpe, Germany, helped in the jump from theory over tothe practical side of things, so that the four-crank NEA-compressors installed for the storage of natural gas atEurope's largest cavern field could be experienced"live". However the question remained following the eventas to how this program could be "topped" next year.

Even With The Weather Cloudy TheWurzener Still Enjoy The Party On Aug. 28th, 2008 Alexander Peters invited in thename of the management all employees of the Wurzenand Stassfurt locations to a summer festival in Wurzen.Included in the list of guests of honour were the newLord Mayor Jörg Röglin, from the town of Wurzen aswell as the urban development department supervisorCarl Rößler. In a storage hall that had been beautifully decorated asparty venue the works council chairperson in WurzenFrank Perner, opened the barbeque party. Mr. Petersutilized the opportunity of welcoming the new appren-tices, 15 in Wurzen and 2 in Stassfurt into the NEA fami-ly. He mentioned the forthcoming demanding assign-

ments for completion before the end of the current yearand encouraged all to firmly participate in the fulfilmentof the years goals. The rich barbeque buffet and the thirst quenching beerencouraged lengthy discussions whilst the lively musicencouraged many onto the dance floor. The workforcesfrom Wurzen and Stassfurt would like to thank thePeters family for a very successful barbeque festival.

Not Only Pegasus Inspired the Party inÜbach-Palenberg On Aug. 14th, 2008 the personnel followed the invitationmade by the family Peters to a fantastic barbeque partyat the company premises. Hours of unbelievably goodentertainment was supplied by the Country Band "MissBehavin" from Texas. Everybody's taste buds were tho-roughly spoilt with tasty barbeque titbits, salads andwell flavoured beer from the barrel.Alexander Peters started everything off with a shortspeech, in which he informed everybody about the posi-tive orders situation for the NEA GROUP worldwide.Stefanie Peters then used the opportunity of explainingto the personnel the background behind the Pegasusfountain constructed in the inside courtyard of the wing

from the new building. The idea was toerect a sculpture, made up from compressorparts as well as a figure of Pegasus, too give any visitors a direct referencefrom an object d'art to the company. The well know artist from Aachen -Bonfatius Stirnberg - initially createdthis idea in a model with a scale of1:10, prior to his creating the "NEAPegasus fountain" in the form ofcolumns. The question is why the flying horse?Pegasus has been an artistic symbolever since the 17th century forDynamic and Fantasy and todayrepresents the modern concept"Innovation". In mythology Pega-sus served the populous. He wasridden by heroes, threw those ofthem who became too cocky offto perish. With this as the cha-racteristic Pegasus symbolicallyembodies the philosophy of Neuman & Esser as a successful and innovativeindustrial compa-ny, which plansfor the future with great prudence.
