STAYINGThe 2015 racing season is in full swing. By the time your read this, Challenge of Americas series will have crowned their champions and “tickets” to the Rotax Grand Finals in November. The Florida Winter Tour’s final race is just around the corner and will also soon crown their champions in both the ROK and Rotax categories. For much of the nation, well let’s just say that ice racing would be a better fit. The far West and South West and far South East are the two areas of the nation experiencing the racing currently. Soon, however the deep freeze will thaw and full-fledged karting will happen throughout the U.S.

The Mom and the Track article is interesting this month as it touches on the other side of racing; the organization side. Let’s not forget that many of the karting series have volunteers or very low paying individuals that crawl out of bed at the umpteenth hour of the morning in order to make the event, that you are attending and racing in, even happen at all. Even if you do not agree with the black flag call, the registration fees, the DQ, try to show some appreciation by a quick thank you to these hard working people.

Speaking of racing and organizations, if GoRacing Magazine is not including content for your series, then please send it to us. We look for racers and organizers to reach out to us and send us your news about your series, races, drivers, teams, kart shops, etc. The goal of GoRacing Magazine is to cover the gamut of kart racing. If you have a driver, official, organizer, race event, and more that you believe may be a great fit for GoRacing Magazine, then please contact us by sending it in to [email protected]

Always a front runner, Texan pilot Trenton Estep will make the switch to Team Koene USAfor the remainder of the Rotax karting events in the 2015 season. Beginning this coming weekend at the third and fourth rounds of the Cold Stone Florida Winter Tour, Estep will join the Indiana based squad as he looks to the front of the field in the talent-filled Rotax Junior field. Joining Roman DeAngelis and Michael d’Orlando, Team Koene USA now has a potent trio of junior drivers that can win at any given event. “We are welcoming Trenton to the team with open arms,” explained Team Manager Mike Maurini. “He has always been on our radar and with his speed, we know he can be a winner when partnered with the right people and support.” Residing in San Antonio, Texas, Estep has been in the seat of a kart for eight seasons at both the regional and national level. Showing speed to run at the front of the pack, Estep is a knowledgeable competitor that likes to know and understand the ins and outs of his kart. Competing aboard a Tony Kart chassis, Estep will look to benefit from the experienced squad and find his way to the top step of the podium. Estep will start his tenure with the Koene USA program as a junior driver and compete at the remaining rounds of the Cold Stone Florida Winter Tour. The Texan will also compete in the US Open series as well as the Rotax Summer Shootout and United States Rotax Max Grand Nationals. Gaining experience in a TaG package, the Tony Kart driver will see some action at select United States Pro Kart Series (USPKS) and SuperKarts! USA (SKUSA) events. Estep is also an accomplished shifter driver who is sponsored by Sodi Kart and the team from Dallas Karting Complex. In just his first season of racing shifters Estep was crowned the 2014 SKUSA S5 Junior Stock Moto Champion. He was undefeated in SKUSA Pro Tour competition until he drove a conservative race at the SuperNats finishing third to secure his National Championship. Trenton will continue to race shifter kart events with Sodi Kart. Maurini continued, “I have seen Trenton drive and have spoken to his dad Brian on the phone. They are the kind of family and competitors that will be a great fit in the program. We are excited to get started.” For more information on Koene USA and their online store, please visit www.KoeneUSA.com or contact company representatives at 317.270.8723 or via e-mail to [email protected]. ANOTHER SUCESSFUL EVENT AT PALM BEACH FOR FLORIDA PRO KART SERIES

Event Success

Words | Photo: ProMedia Motorsports PR

The second stop of the Florida Pro Kart Series winter program returned to the Palm Beach Kart Center in Jupiter, Florida on February 6-8. Contesting the third and fourth rounds of the six-race championship series, just over 100 entries took part in another successful and fun event focused around family-based atmosphere. Fourteen categories made up the seven race groups each day, welcoming first time winners and drivers extending their championship lead as the program heads toward the series finale in March. The IAME USA East IAME Senior category welcomed two new winners on the weekend, making it four different drivers on top of the podium in four rounds of racing. AJ Myers and Roger Ralston Jr. bested the 19-driver fields in the two main events. Most of the weekend belonged to Dan Roeper, making his first series start. Roeper was the top qualifier both days, and won all four heat races under heavy pressure. Myers, starting second in Saturday’s Final, got the jump on Roeper and was able to lead all 15 laps for the win. At the line, it was a photo finish, with Roeper coming just 65 thousandths short. Colin Warren completed the podium with IndyCar driver Jay Howard fourth and Andrick Zeen fifth. After Roeper showed the way throughout the day Sunday, when it came to the Final it was all Ralston. The Florida driver led all 15 laps, pulling out to a 1.5-second advantage. Myers ran second with Roeper taking third. Zeen improved one spot from the previous day while Dustin Stross completed the top-five. With the total weekend points calculated, Myers took home the check for $2,000 with Roeper claiming the $500 payday. Zeen was third overall, and won a new set of Bridgestone tires. It was a fight all weekend long in the 14-driver Top Kart USA IAME Junior class as championship leader Zach Holden added another win to his record, with Vincenzo Sarracino awarded the victory on Sunday. Sarracino laid down a blistering lap for qualifying on Saturday to secure the pole position for the opening heat race, however, he would not complete a single lap. That opened the door for Wisconsin driver Brandon Lemke to score the win. It was a four-driver battle in Heat #2, with Seve DePinto edging out Sarracino, Lemke and Jack Miller. Holden got the jump on the entire field in the main event, and went on to lead all 15 laps for his second victory, beating Giovanni Bromante by 67 thousandths of a second at the line. Lemke, Miller and John Paul Southern Jr. completed the top-five. Holden continued his run at the front on Sunday, beating Lemke for fast time in qualifying by just seven thousandths and in both heat races. The two battled hard in the

Final, with Lemke crossing the line first until a blocking penalty dropped him two positions. That pro-moted Sarracino to the top of the podium, able to slip around Holden on the final lap. Lemke was classified third with Devin Bowerman and DePinto fourth and fifth. Holden extends his championship lead, and earned another $1,000 check with his weekend total. Lemke was second with $500 as Bromante took home the Bridgestone set of tires. Sean Meier continued his win streak in the Brad’s Heating & Cooling Briggs 206 Senior category, welcoming 14 drivers, winning both feature races over the weekend. Meier swept Saturday’s action, leading from qualifying, through both heat races and the Final. Patrick O’Neal gave chase, and led in the main event at times, but fell three tenths back at the checkered flag. Michael Clark completed the podium, with Mike de la Plante fourth and Steven Hefley fifth. Plante broke up the perfect score for Meier, posting the fast lap in Sunday qualifying with championship leader back in the third spot. Meier fought his way to the race win in both heats, and then lead all 15 laps for the victory. O’Neal was runner-up with Nic Hill in third. Plante was fourth, but was penalized two positions for blocking, moving Brad Famer to fourth and Matthew Mayes to fifth. The Brad’s Heading & Cooling Briggs 206 Junior division was split between point leader Jimmy Jackson and Nash Duyn. Jackson nearly swept Saturday’s round, with Duyn taking the top honors in qualifying. In the Final, Jackson edged out Duyn by two tenths at the checkered flag with Hunter Fox a close third. Duyn was the top driver on Sunday, aside from Jackson scoring the win in Heat #2. Duyn edged out Jackson and Fox for the victory in the main event, scoring his first series win. A group of 14 drivers made up the four Palm Beach Kart Center shifterkart categories. AJ Myers and Open Shifter point leader Patrik Hajek were the top two drivers on the weekend, splitting the victories. Hajek was the top driver on Saturday through qualifying and the two heat races. Leading the first four laps, the Czech driver retired early, handing the lead and the win to Myers. Cole Mathewson was a close second, with Max DiBella in third. Hajek began Sunday as he did Saturday, landing fast time in qualifying

Page 11: Go Racing Magazine - March 2015

before another DNF in Heat #1 gave Myers the win. Hajek bounced back to win Heat #2, and led the final 11 laps of the main event for his third victory of the season. Myers was runner-up with Mathewson in third. Open Masters was won by Patrck Otto Madsen both days. Point leader Kurt Mathewson was the top driver through most of Saturday, until a DNF in the main event gave Madsen the victory. Sunday was all Madsen, sweeping the action with Mathewson in second. The Stock Honda category was a revolving door at the front as point leader Ryan Greive and David Levy swapped the top spot. In the Final, Levy came away with the victory as Farshad Bagheri slipped into second, dropping Greive back to third. On Sunday, Greive led the majority of the day until the Final when Bagheri advanced to the top spot for the victory. Levy and Greive finished within two seconds of the leader. David Davis ran unchallenged Saturday in the Stock Honda Masters division, and was joined by Philip Haddad on Sunday. Haddad swept the fourth round, with Davis settling for second. Michael Pagano made his Praga TaG Open Senior debut on the weekend, sweeping the opening day of action. Pagano beat out the seven other drivers in the category on Saturday, driving to a six-second victory in the main event over Daniel Rieger and Mason Carroll. Carroll and Pagano went back and forth on Sunday. Carroll took the fast lap in qualifying, with Pagano winning both heat races. Pagano led 14 of the 15 laps in the Final to cross the line first, but was removed from the results following tech. That promoted Carroll to the victory, with Rieger second and Brendan Nelson third. Christian Calvo extended his win streak to three, dominating the Praga TaG Open Masters class. Calvo won Saturday’s feature by seven seconds over Miguel Gransaulll and Janos Elier, with the same podium on Sunday as Calvo won by only three seconds. Jason Welage swept the entire weekend in the Ticket Clinic TaG Sportsman group. Racing in the IAME Mini Swift class, Welage was at the top of the results sheet from qualifying to the main event, both days. The victory on Saturday was a 10-second advantage in

class over Owen Mahle and point leader Ashton Chilton. Sunday’s triumph was nine seconds ahead of Mahle with Maximilian Opalski in third. Giano Taurino won the Vortex Mini Rok class on Saturday, winning by just over four seconds ahead of top qualifier Travis Devendorf and Heat #2 winner Will Lambros. Sunday was a sweep by Devendorf, running away to a 10-second margin of victory over Lambros and Dino Lambros. Harry Coulton extended his KARTS TaG Mini championship lead, sweeping the weekend. Humerto Porrata ran second the entire time, with Chase Oliveri in third. Eight drivers made up the Ticket Clinic TaG Micro division, with Andreus Asmar and Elio Giovane the top two drivers both days. Asmar drove to a four-second victory over Giovane with top qualifier Rylee Engel third. Asmar was the quickest in Sunday qualifying, until Giovane won both heat races and the Final. Asmar finished the main event a tenth back from Giovane, with Engel in third once again. The series finale is scheduled for March 13-15 at the 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville. QUICK NOTES

A RelocationLOS ANGELES KARTING CHAMPIONSHIP RELOCATES PROGRAM TO WILLOW SPRINGS

Words: ProMedia Motorsports PR

The Los Angeles Karting Championship (LAKC) is pleased to announce exciting news for their 2015 season. After a tumultuous start to the season, the historic Willow Springs International Raceway will be the new home track for 2015 and the organization is thrilled to be working with a group that is focused on developing a successful partnership. The opening race of the 2015 season will be held at Willow on March 28-29. LAKC would like to let the membership know that the LAKC is intact, strong and unconditionally devoted to producing the best events possible. The surprise run of events that unfolded in February was extremely unfortunate and emotionally disturbing for the volunteer board and supporters who put in countless hours managing our series. The organization was prepped and ready to roll for the opening round of our nine-race schedule in mid-February, but a disappointing last minute move for positioning on behalf of the contracted management of the traditional facility (CalSpeed) left the LAKC without a track on which to hold the first event of 2015. A great deal of time and effort has been put in over the off-season to develop the 2015 schedule, using input from the teams and kart shops, all with the focus of maintaining a workable gap between the LAKC races and the SKUSA California ProKart Challenge events to give the LAKC drivers and teams the chance to adequately prepare for their next events. In keeping with this effort, the LAKC will be continuing with most of the schedule that was released to the membership and the SoCal karting community. “All of our special programs remain in place, including cash, prizes and other assorted programs that will be awarded this year. A number of companies, most importantly, SKUSA, IAME, MG Tires, Vega Tires and PRD USA have stepped in to help provide incentives for our members for the 2015 LAKC Prize Award Program at Willow,” commented LAKC President Chris LaTorre. “We are thankful for the hospitality and enthusiasm that has been shown by the amazing people at Willow Springs International Raceway. This is a great facility that has real restrooms, an amazing newly remodeled restaurant and bar that offers hot breakfast and lunch. The facility creates a family friendly environment where you can bring your toys; bicycles, scooters, pets, R/C cars, etc. This is not a free-for-all but we have very limited rules allowing a much more welcoming, family friendly facility. We are excited to finally have a facility that embraces our vision for the future of karting in Southern California.” LAKC remains committed to bringing you the highest quality

event at the lowest possible cost to the racer. That has been, and will always be, the philosophy in running the organization. LAKC will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting after Saturday night practice (March 28) to discuss things that you - the racer - would like to see this season. Remember, this is YOUR series and LAKC wants to hear your feedback and suggestions to improve your experience. The membership owns the series, as it is a not-for-profit organization, so your input and involvement is critical and welcome. LAKC will be running the Saturday practice and Sunday race day. This gives the opportunity to have a Saturday practice schedule and ensure all classes have the maximum amount of track time. Willow Springs International Raceway will offer Friday practice for the low price of $25. LAKC will also have brand new transponders available to rent for $15. There is a $10 Willow Springs facility fee to enter the premises and have access to watch any events that may be going on during the race weekends. This wristband will be good for the entire weekend (Fri-Sun). There will be vintage auto racing going on at the big track all weekend, along with drifting on the autocross/skidpad track on Saturday during the March 28-29 race weekend. The drivers pre-registration entry fee of $85 will include FREE Saturday practice as well as the required insurance wristband necessary for grid/track access on both days. Any Mechanic/Tuner who requires grid access will need to purchase an LAKC insurance wristband for $15 per day or $25 for both Saturday and Sunday. This will not be required on Friday, since Willow is managing the track. Camping in the pits will be offered at NO COST for the entire weekend, including Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. They also have a limited number of full hookup spots next to the big track for rent @ $25 per night on a first come first served basis. You can dump your motorhome for a $7 fee. Please check with Willow Springs directly to inquire about full hookup spots. If you had previously registered with LAKC for the February race at CalSpeed, you will not need to do anything since your entry will be rolled over to this event. If you wish to be refunded for that event, please contact them for a full refund. A pit map is currently under development for this event. All pit spots will be at a reduced price of $80 each for the entire season. Any extra monies on your MSR account will be credited for future events or refunded if you like. Updates to the website will be forthcoming during the next couple of weeks as pit map, prize programs and details are put together, spelling out any changes to the 2015 program. Thank you again for your support in 2015. LAKC looks forward to seeing everyone on March 28-29 at the season opener. Having worked with Sean Girdler over the years and connecting with Jamie Patten, we were confident the ONE kart would perform well. After the first session, we realized that the kart clearly exceeded our expectations, it was spot on! We were “blessed” with having a full range of weather at Clay Pigeon for testing that weekend, from dry, to damp, to hard rain and at one point, sleet. Driver feedback and minor chassis changes were quick, precise, and allowed us to put down some blistering fast laps in all weather conditions. Apex team driver, Alex Vorrilas was more than impressed with the overall performance and predictability of the chassis. In short, after our test session, the decision was simple, ApexKartSports will partner with ONE Motorsports to introduce the ONE Chassis to the US and Canada.”

Jamie Patten & Sean Girdler said “following a great 2 days with George and Alex testing in the UK we knew the right decision was to appoint APEX to manage and build the ONE Brand to the USA. George and Alex have had a great relationship with us for a number of years and when we were ready to share our exciting opportunity; APEX were our first choice in bringing the ONE Brand to the USA, their knowledge of the market and experience made the decision an easy process and we are really looking forward to working with them.

A Winning CelebrationTHE WSK GOLD CUP CELEBRATES ITS WINNERS AT THE ADRIA KARTING RACEWAY: CAMPONESCHI (I – TONY KART-VORTEX KZ2), BASZ (PL - KOSMIC-VORTEX KF), LUNDGAARD (DK - TONY KART-VORTEX KFJ) AND HAUGER (N – CRG-TM 60MINI). ALESSANDRO ZANARDI INTERVENED TO AWARDS THE DRIVERS.

Words: [email protected]

IN ADRIA (I) THE WSK GOLD CUP AWARDS THE MOST DARING DRIVERSThe WSK Gold Cup has got a name which perfectly represents the spirit of the event. The Cup had its final phase in schedule today, at the Adria Karting Raceway. All the 130 drivers taking part in this one-round tournament did their best until the very end, always trying to achieve a better position, never ready to give in. In fact, only with today’s Finals we were able to know the names of the winners of the trophy. The venue of this great appointment was the circuit set within the premises of the Adria International Raceway, a facility which has become a steady point for international kart racing, as proved by the visit of an important big name of motorsport such as Alessandro Zanardi. He is an ex kart driver and a fan of kart racing; he went to Adria to follow the decisive races more closely. The Gold Cup has just finished but the next appointment is already approaching fast: next weekend, with finals in schedule on Sunday 8th March, the Adria Karting Raceway will host the first out of four rounds of the WSK Super Master Series.

FLAVIO CAMPONESCHI FIGHTS AND WINS IN KZ2Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega) deserved his victory in KZ2. The Italian driver did not manage to pass his team-mate Marco Ardigò at the start; Ardigò was the pole-sitter after winning the Prefinal this morning. However, their challenge was rather short: after two laps, Camponeschi succeeded in overtaking his countryman and in pulling away. Jonathan Thonon (Praga-Parilla-Vega), who led the pack of pursuers, gave the chase to the leader but had to be content with second place, given that Camponeschi proved he was able to hold him off. Third place for the Italian Lorenzo Camplese (Formula K-Parilla-Vega): he deftly overtook Ardigò after an uncertain and gripping battle, where both the drivers showed what they are capable of.

KAROL BASZ LAYS HIS HANDS ON THE TROPHY IN KFThis time in KF, at the end of the nth duel between the Polish Karol Basz (Kosmic-Vortex-Vega) and the Danish Nicklas

Nielsen (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega), victory went to Basz. He managed to cross the finishing line first in the Final, leaving little time to Nielsen to celebrate his victory in the Prefinal, a victory which had allowed him to be the pole-sitter of the decisive race. Basz overtook the Danish before half race and, then, he started to gain ground over his rivals until the gap became too wide to be closed. Great performance also for Martijn van Leeuwen (CRG-TM-Vega): he was always in thetop positions throughout the whole weekend and, in the Final, he managed to recover after dropping to the fourth row of the grid because of the poor result achieved in the Prefinal. The Dutch finished third after winning a duel against the New Zealander Marcus Armstrong (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega) and the English Max Fewtrell (FA Alonso Kart-Vortex-Vega) in the initial phases of the race.

CHRISTIAN LUNDGAARD RECOVERS AND WINS IN KFJChristian Lundgaard (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega) had a really hard time before getting onto the highest step of the podium in the KFJ Final. The Danish, the winner of the Pre-final B, was overtaken by the surprising Indian Kush Maini, while Clement Novalak (on Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega as well as Maini), the pole-sitter, lost several positions. The Asian underdog led the pack for quite a lot of laps, until Lundgaard managed to close the wide gap which separated the two drivers. In few laps, Lundgaard passed the leader and crossed the finishing line in first position. Maini was the runner-up after a harsh battle against the American Logan Sargeant (FA Alonso Kart-Vortex-Vega) and the Russian Artem Petrov (DR-TM-Vega).

DENNIS HAUGER TRIUMPHS IN 60 MINIThe toughest opponent for the Norwegian Dennis Hauger (CRG-TM-Vega) was the Australian Lachlan Hughes (Birel-Iame-Vega), given that the Italian Leonardo Marseglia (CRG-LKE-Vega) was slowed down at the start of the 60 Mini Final by an issue with his spark plug. Hauger and Marseglia, the winners of the two Prefinals, separated right at the start: the Norwegian driver pulled away and won, despite the efforts of the Australian. Marseglia, on the other hand, had to fight hard to keep his podium position: he eventually finished third, after closing the gap in only one lap with the Italian Giuseppe Fusco (Tony Kart-LKE-Vega) and Rocco Negro (Top Kart-TM-Vega).

QUICK NOTES

Breaking Records4TH ANNUAL SYD WHITE ENDURO SEES NEW FINISHING RECORD

The 2015 Syd White Memorial Enduro Presented by Briggs and Stratton was held on February 14th and 15th at the Marina Airport Karting Circuit. The theme of the fourth edition of the race was new challenges for all. A new qualifying procedure on Saturday, new minimum pit stop requirements, new tire manufacturer, which would see more tire management come into play, the addition of the Briggs Local Option 206 engine classes, and record temperatures saw a different and more challenging race from past editions of this event. Teams would have open practice on Saturday before qualifying. In past years a traditional fast lap qualifying was held, but this year teams would have to come into the pits and make a tire change, similar to the NASCAR Sprint Cup All Star Race Qualifying. Who would start up front was up to the makeshift crews that the teams assembled. When all was said and done, the World Formula Senior team of Agan Motorsports led the field with a time of 2:02.647, some 7.7 seconds ahead of second place, which was the Agan Motorsport’s Masters team. Third place was the first LO206 team, AK Motorsports. The four-hour race began at approximately 10:15 AM under sunny skies and a slight breeze. Drivers were well behaved and settled in for the long race. Agan Motorsport’s led the race overall for the first third of the race before being hit with mechanical issues. This gave the KPX Racing Team the opportunity to take control of the race. Meanwhile in World Formula Masters, the Agan Motorsport’s Masters team was running strong with Rossi Racing on the move. In the LO206 Sr. category, the AK Motorsports team of Nik Romano, Jonathan Brown, and Tyler Agan were the kart to beat, running as high as 2nd overall at one time. The new LO206 Jr. class saw a race long battle between Nevada Kartsport from Reno and Team Swiss Jr. from Portland. Drivers faced difficulties saving the tires because of the aggressive surface at Marina, the 75-degree temperatures, and the nature of the Bridgestone YLC tires. Those who could make their tires last were found at the front toward the end of the race. The KPX Racing Team of Taylor Young, Philip Pegler, and Jack Freese made their tires last, set quick lap times, and most importantly stayed out of trouble to take their first overall win and World Formula Senior class win, making them the fourth different winner in the four years of the race. The World Formula Masters class came down to the wire and when all was said and done the Rossi Racing drivers Chris Rossi, Jeff Smith, and Bob Hurst took the win by just over a lap. In the

largest category of the race, LO206 Sr., AK Motorsports out of the Agan Motorsport’s camp took a dominating win. Local driver Tyler Agan started the race for the team and turned it over to first time kart racer Nik Romano, who then turned the wheel over to Oregon driver Jonathan Brown. Last but not least was the conclusion of the LO206 Jr. battle between Team Swiss Jr. and Nevada Kartsport. In the end Team Swiss Jr. of Jacob Gulick, Mason Buck, Spencer Kunz, and Tyler Besuyen took the victory by just over 2 laps. The 2015 race saw very little incidents with drivers exercising patience and respect, something that seems to be missing at higher-level karting races in this era. Also of note, 11 Local Option 206 motors ran this race and saw zero mechanical failures. That works out to 2,685 trouble free laps for the LO206 engines. The credit is due to team’s properly utilizing their equipment and ultimately due to Briggs and Stratton for building the next to bulletproof engines. Look for the 2016 Syd White Memorial Enduro to be even bigger and even more fun and exciting. Stay tuned to www.montereybaykarters.com for full results information.

Steve SpringSteve designs exhaust systems for and is a partner at Graves Motorsports. Graves participates in the AMA Superbike championship.

Steve started racing arrive and drive at Dromo 1 back in 2009 and raced there until it closed in 2010. He was able to win the rookie of the year title in the final Grand Prix season as well as participated in their GP2 series. After Dromo closed Steve raced in a small number of CalSpeed events sporadically, before joining full time in the Super Series in late 2012.

“I’d have to say the highlight of my time at CalSpeed was my recent win in the Ironman; nothing quite compares to standing on the top of a podium. “

Steve finished 2nd in the IronMan points in 2013 and took his first win at Cal-Speed in Round 1 of the 2015 IronMan season. He won Rookie Of The Year at Dromo 1 in 2010 and in the CalSpeed Super Series in 2013.

Rodney BryantRodney is the Maintenance Department Supervisor at SoCal Jets; a corporate aircraft maintenance facility.

“My only racing background is sport karting, starting indoors at SBR, as some-thing my son Rodney Bryant Jr. and I could do together.” Rodney then made the move up to CalSpeed after meeting Patrick Britain, Miles Calvin and others at a team endurance event held there. He says Darren Mercer finally convinced him to give it a try.

Rodney says he is still working on getting that career highlight, but one of his favorite moments was racing Jose da Silva to the line for the B main win 2013 Round 8. “I think that was one of the closest finishes in CalSpeed history. Nei-ther of us were sure who won at the stripe.”

Rodney currently leads the 2015 Super Series Heavy Championship, was the top points earner in his class in the first two rounds and has had two Top 5’s in Sport Kart Grand National Heat Races.

Wes DentWes is a Production Artist and is about to finish his degree in Graphic Design.

Wes’ racing background started at Umigo as an employee about 6 years ago. A few years later he returned to work at Umigo and started taking it a little more seriously and began trying to get better. It wasn’t until Jerott King and TA La told me about The Sport Kart Grand Nationals in 2013 that he really got hooked into arrive and drive competition karting. “Since then it’s just been all CalSpeed,” Wes stated.

Wes says his career highlight is probably Round 2 of the Super Series. “Being able to go back to back heat wins for my first time felt pretty awesome and I was really driving smart that day.” He says it was the strongest he has ever felt, but not being able to take that to the A-Main due to rain was bitter sweat.

Wes was the 2014 Super Series Rookie Of The Year and recently took his first career win in the 2015 Super Series Round 2.

22 GO Racing Magazine

I recently had an opportunity to “go behind the scenes” during a 3-day karting event. I knew putting together race events were no small task, and the saying “it takes a village” doesn’t come close in describing the organization, planning and execution of a successful race weekend; but having the chance to be a part of it for the weekend was definitely an eye opener.

Most of you are well aware that without people in the karting community willing to volunteer their time to put together the numerous kart clubs, organizations and race series, karting as we know it would not exist. The majority of organizers that put together these events are definitely not doing it for the money, they do it because they love the sport. The coordination of booking a location, securing track workers, officials, timing and scoring, etc. all must be done before even considering how many people might show up to participate in any given event. These people take pride in opening the gates to the track on a race weekend and seeing the trucks and trailers lined up, racers excited to fire up their karts and take to the track for a great day of racing.

During my weekend of working the event, we had to be at the track even earlier than we normally have to be when we are racing. Luckily we were staying in a nearby hotel and didn’t need to make the 2 hour drive each morning. I realize now that the guys’ didn’t mind being at the track earlier, that just meant more time to get everything ready. I on the other hand was never more thankful for my morning cup of coffee those 3 days! It also meant staying at the track longer in the day. We couldn’t just pack up and leave once our racing day was finished. I continued getting people signed in and registered until registration closed each day.

The eye opener that weekend were the people that came through those gates. Father and sons, fathers and daughters,

moms, grandparents, aunts and uncles and friends all having to check in at registration in order to participate or spectate for the day or weekend. I did a lot of apologizing that weekend, it was my first time ever on the “other” side of the registration window and I suddenly felt clumsy, and slow. I told myself not to get frazzled, but it happened anyway and I apologized some more! Thankfully the majority of the people that fell victim to my “window” were gracious and understanding. We shared a laugh, some were racers that I have known for what seems like forever, others meeting for the 1st time and finally putting a face with the name. Unfortunately I also got to experience the not-so-nice people and even though I tried to not let it get to me, it still put a damper on the day. I honestly felt bad for the lady that took off her wristband, and had to pay for another one the next day. But just like in racing, there are rules, and guidelines and insurance and all that other fun stuff and every wrist band has to be paid and accounted for. Maybe she felt better after calling us nasty names, who knows? What I do know is that each person that comes to the track whether a driver or supporter is a representative of that person or team. You never know who is watching your character or actions. Screaming and cursing at your driver while they are in line to go over scales, or telling the registration ladies how stupid you think all of this is and how stupid we are; is a reflection of character and could adversely affect your driver. You never know when a potential sponsor is standing next to you or behind you. I can also attest to the fact that if this is how some people treat the other volunteers and workers during a racing event, eventually sitting at home is going to be a lot more fun than putting up with the insults. No one needs to be insulted or has to put on a race event so you or your kid can race for the weekend.

Next time you are at the track and it is taking a few minutes longer than normal, consider there might be someone brand new to the track, and take into account that at one time you were that brand new person. Take a minute to thank the corner workers at the end of the race day, yours might have been just one of the many karts they had to pick up and move to safety that day. Shake the hand of the officials and appreciate their knowledge for keeping everyone safe, and most importantly thank the people that organized the event, without them we wouldn’t be at the track doing what we all love most…racing!

the category welcomed two different winners in Phoenix, bringing the total to four on the season. Championship leader Christian Brooks secured his first Senior victory on Saturday, while veteran Mason Marotta notched his first since 2010. Second year driver Luke Selliken secured the pole position to begin Round Three, edging out Round Two winner Brenden Baker and Marotta. The Prefinal was a hard fought battle with Marotta coming away with the win and 10 critical points toward the championship. Baker and Brooks however partnered up and ran away from the field in the Final. Baker set the pace until his engine experienced a hiccup, allowing Brooks to close in, make a pass for the lead and secure the victory. Baker’s engine regained its power, and he held on for second. Selliken won the battle for third over Marotta and Jim McKinney. Selliken laid down a monster lap in qualifying on Sunday, earning another five points toward his championship hunt. Marotta got the early jump on the younger Selliken, and led all 17 laps of the Prefinal as they fought for second place. While Marotta held the lead for the majority of the Final, the lead pack saw eight drivers together until contact in consecutive laps dropped

A picture perfect weekend in Arizona greeted close to 100 karters during the second stop of the 2015 Rotax Challenge of the Americas program. The Phoenix Kart Racing Association in Glendale, Arizona played host to the third and fourth rounds of the six-race championship series, as racers continued the path toward winning one of the four Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals tickets up for grabs, along with the many other prizes and prestigious honors that will be decided in March. In a continuation of the Tucson weekend in January, the PKRA event welcomed a number of first time winners, and helped to chase the title contenders in all six categories. potential winners down the order or off the track. This gave Marotta a clear path to the top of the podium, with Selliken second and Brooks in third. Returning driver Gustavo Menezes - a 2015 FIA Formula 3 European driver - drove to fourth, stealing the five bonus points for fast lap of the race while Josh Kurtz recorded his first top-five result. The title chase in the Cambrian Go-Karts Masters Max division tightened up as the top two contenders - Paul Bonilla and John Crow - split the victories on the weekend. Bonilla, a double winner at the Tucson event, was able to get the better of Crow on Saturday. Crow set the pace in qualifying and came away with the win in the Prefinal. Bonilla took away the lead on lap six of the 25-lap race, going on to earn his third straight victory. Crow settled for second over former series champion Scott Falcone, 2014 US Rotax Grand Nationals champion Ken Maxfield, and John Breidinger rounded out the top five. Crow

bounced back the following day to sweep the action, earning maximum points to close the gap on Bonilla’s point lead. After securing fast time late in the qualifying session once again, Crow went on to win the Prefinal, taking away the top spot from Bonilla with just two laps remaining. It was a wire-to-wire victory for Crow in the Final, as Bonilla ran a close second. Falcone ran third with Maxfield fourth and Canadian Christopher Patterson in fifth. Two drivers remain the ones to beat in the Rolison Performance Group Junior Max category - with Nick Brueckner and Sting Ray Robb splitting the victories once again. Brueckner swept the action on Saturday to help add to his championship lead. Brueckner was fast driver in qualifying, led all 17 laps of the Prefinal, and went green-to-checkered in the Final for his second victory of the season. Robb came from the rear of the field in the Prefinal after a chassis change just before qualifying to end up third. In the Final, he worked his

way past Trey Brown for second spot, as Matthew Taskinen and Toni Breidinger completed the top-five. Sunday was all Sting Ray, as the second year Junior driver swept the action from qualifying to the Final. Brueckner gave chase, after placing third in the Prefinal to Brown, and stole the fast lap of the Final to gain five bonus points. Brown - a Junior Max rookie - finished on the podium for the third straight weekend. Michael Michoff and David Ilavia crossed the line fourth and fifth. Robb was also announced during the weekend as one of two American drivers to compete at the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy in Europe this season. It remains a three driver chase for the CRG-USA DD2 title with last year’s vice-champion Sabré Cook gaining her second victory of the season, while veteran Matt Jaskol won his first series feature. Cook scored near maximum points, missing out on the Prefinal win after securing the fast time in qualifying. Round Two winner Michael Ilavia stole the race with a last lap pass, earning the pole position for the main event. The top three ran nose to tail, until Cook ended up pulling away at the end for the victory over Ilavia and Jaskol. Sunday was Jaskol’s from the beginning. Setting fast time in qualifying, he led the field to the green flag in the Prefinal. Contact between he and Cook sent them off into the dirt, with Jaskol retiring. That fueled the fire in the veteran, as he stormed back to reclaim the top spot in the

Final, earning the victory. Cook ran second while Ilavia, who was credited for the win in the Prefinal, finished third. Ben Schermerhorn finished fourth both days. Just like the Senior Max division, the PSL West Mini Max class welcomed two more winners on the year to make it four different drivers on top of the podium in four races. Canadian Marco Kacic and Utah driver Payton Durrant each won their first class victory of the series. Durrant - the 2013 Micro Max series champion - was the top driver in qualifying for Saturday, and fought for the Prefinal win with Round Two winner Sebastian Alvarez. At the line, Alvarez took the win and set the pace in the Final. Kacic was able to track him down toward the end. On the final lap, Kacic made a strong move in turn 11, coming out with the lead and his first victory. Mini Max rookie Jak Crawford followed him through to steal second from Alvarez. Durrant and Austin Torgerson completed the top-five. Alvarez began Sunday strong, stealing the fast time in qualifying as the checkered flag waved and went on to win the Prefinal. In the Final, Sebastian was under attack by Round One winner Griffin Dowler. While the two fought for the lead, contact was made and they fell down the order having went off into the gravel. This allowed Durrant to slip through to assume the lead, and consistent laps kept him at the point when the checkered flag waved. Crawford earned his third podium of the year with another runner-up result, while Torgerson

placed third ahead of Kacic and Hannah Greenemeier. Only two drivers have stood on top of the podium in the Motorsports Development Group Micro Max division the last two seasons. Last year’s champion Jak Crawford won all six feature races, and through two events in 2015, Diego LaRoque as matched that performance. Racing at his home track, it was a sweep of the on-track action over the two days for racing. LaRoque drove to a 2.7-second triumph on Saturday, joined by Leland Honeyman - recording fast lap of race - and Cole Keith Cotham on the podium while Anthony Willis and Josh Pierson completed the top-five. Sunday was a fight for the win with Honeyman as LaRoque reached the finish line two tenths in front. Pierson won the battle for third over Cotham and Tyler Ruth, who was also credited for the fast lap. The complete recap of the Phoenix weekend will be available in a digital magazine, set to be released on February 24 and available on the Rotax Challenge of the Americas website. The 2015 series finale will take competitors to the Napa Valley in northern California to compete on the Simraceway Performance Karting Center in Sonoma on March 13-15. Aaron Schmitt came away as the winner in the S3 Novice division

The 2015 season began for the California ProKart Challenge, the flagship regional program of Superkarts! USA, under changing conditions at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park over February 6-7. Now entering its 11th year, the six-round championship

series welcomed sunny skies for practice day, then was hit by cooler temperatures and rain falling from the clouds that surrounded the 7/10-mile course on race day. A revised class structure welcomed 159 entries over the now 11 categories offered this season, including a record 42 TaG Cadet/Cadet Rookie drivers. For many drivers, Saturday’s victory was their first in the series – or at least a first in their new category – as the chase for a piece of the $75,000 prize package in 2015 begins. Among the first time winners was in the Phil Giebler Racing TaG Senior division, with NorCal driver Sonny Cervelli scoring the victory. 2014 SKUSA Pro Tour champion Jake Craig was there to debut his SKUSA #1 plate in style, earning the fast lap in qualifying. Cervelli and Mason Marotta made up the top three. Craig led every lap of the shortened seven-lap Heat #1 race, with Marotta up to second as Cervelli fell to fourth. The second heat race was decided between Marotta and Cervelli, as Craig suffered a mechanical issue on the opening lap. Cervelli ended up securing the lead on the final lap for the win. The Final race was shortened to just 10 laps to beat a setting sun, with Cervelli pacing the entire way. Stepanova

Nekeel, who started third, was into second and kept the pressure on the race as the Washington driver scored the runner-up position. The fight for the last step on the podium went down to the final lap, with Marotta able to steal the spot from veteran Matt Johnson while Craig came from the back of the 23-kart field to finish an astonishing fifth place. It was a record day in the Leading Edge Motorsports TaG Cadet category, welcoming 42 drivers to Buttonwillow, all competing with the IAME Mini Swift engine that has been implemented for 2015. The driver that came away from the battle with the victory was Arizona’s Anthony Willis. Ryan Schartau came away with the fast time of the two qualifying sessions around the wet track, with many in the field competing on rain tires for the first time. Schartau led for three laps in Heat #1 until a charging Dominic Gorden took over and led the remaining seven laps for the win. Gorden lost his chance in the second heat, unable to complete the opening lap due to a mechanical issue that took him out of the race. That allowed Schartau and Willis to fight for the win. Willis secured the position late, scoring the win as Tomas Mejia slid into second on the final few circuits to push Schartau to third. A suddenly sunny sky misguided a few Cadets onto slick tires too early, as the main event saw quite a few karts spin out of contention. Schartau fought back from his finish in the second heat to begin the Final, leading the first few circuits of the eight-lap race. Willis took over and drove

his way to his first series victory. Mejia dropped Schartau to third, with Jalen Mack and Colin Queen completing the top-five. Nineteen of the drivers were placed in the TaG Cadet Rookie division for the event, as Dustin Salaverria earned the race win over Cole Shade and Marcus Rodriguez. With the challenging race conditions at Buttonwillow, California PKC is considering the list of Rookies ‘tentative’ until dry conditions at Round Two will help to finalize them for the rest of the season. Jarred Campbell made his debut in the headline Vemme Kart/Extreme Karting S1 Pro Stock Moto class a memorable one, finishing the day at the top of the podium. Campbell, in his first race after moving up from S2, started the day fourth in qualifying, lined up behind veteran driver Cody Hodgson who scored the fast lap in the wet session. He was a full 1.4 seconds quicker than defending champion Billy Musgrave, with S1 rookie Kolton Griffin in third. Hodgson drove away to an 11-second win in the opening heat race, as Campbell climbed up to second. The two fought for the top spot in the second heat race, with Campbell leading a few circuits before Hodgson locked up the win. Ryon Beachner closed the gap on the two in the second heat, and attacked early in the main event. Beachner led the opening two circuits before debris on

the track locked up a brake rotor. That sent him off course and put Hodgson at the point, but only for two laps before he dropped a wheel into the mud, causing Campbell to take the spot away. Campbell kept it consistent, while Hodgson came under fire from Musgrave. At the checkered flag, Campbell scored the victory by just over five seconds. Hodgson fought off Musgrave for second, as the defending champ finished a lap down with a flat tire. That put Griffin on the podium in his first S1 main event, with Matias Podboj and Peter Abba completing the top-five. New for 2015 is the creation of the 2Wild Karting S4 Super Master Stock Moto division, running in conjunction with the SwedeTech Racing Engines S4 Master Stock Moto category. The new class separates the drivers 45 years of age and older into a class within a class scenario, and 12 drivers took part in the inaugural edition. The 15-driver S4 class was swept by defending series champion Darren Elliott. The veteran was at the top of the results sheet for every session. The 15-lap main event put Elliott up against 2014 Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix winner Rob Logan. Logan led the majority of the race until he dropped a tire in turn one with four laps remaining – where Elliott took over the spot and scored the victory. Logan settled for second, with former Pro Tour champion Jimmy McNeil in

the third spot. Justin Bennett was fourth with Mike Mantel fifth. Ken Schilling nearly made it a sweep in the new Super Master class, coming out on top after qualifying and the two heat races. A spin took him out of contention for the win in the main event, allowing returning driver Phil Dunford to take over the point and score the inaugural victory. Kalvin Chen and Darrell Tunnell completed the podium, with Schilling hanging on for fourth. The Professional Kart Support S3 Novice Stock Moto division continues its growth at the regional level, bringing in new drivers to the six-speed world of shifterkart racing. This weekend under challenging conditions, a number of drivers were at the front, with Aaron Schmitt coming out on top. Qualifying was paced by S3 rookie Ethan McDade, before Junior graduate Enzo Prevost scored the win in Heat #1. Prevost was out after two laps in Heat #2, as returning S3 driver Matthew O’Donnell led the way at the checkered flag. O’Donnell would see his hopes of victory wash away at the start of the race when he could not get his powerplant started in time. After 15 laps, it was Schmitt in the first position scoring the victory. Robert Heck Jr. finished second, with Cory Ormonde in third.

Anthony Freese locked up the fast time in the Sanner Racing S5 Junior Stock Moto qualifying, but his run at the front did not make it past the opening lap of Heat #1. That allowed Noah Grey, making his first S5 start at the California PKC program, to take the race win over Callum Smith. Grey suffered an off-track excursion during the opening lap of Heat #2, leaving Smith alone out front for the win. Leading all 15 laps of the main event, Smith secured his first series victory. Hunter Kelly crossed the line second with Josh Early third, both in their S5 debut. Unfortunately, Kelly would fall to fourth in the finishing order due to an on-track penalty. This would move Dylan Roberts onto the podium in third next to Smith and Early. 2014 Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix scholarship winner Carter Williams battled tough throughout his rookie season as a Senior driver. His second season could not have started out any better, as Williams won the opening round in the Ryan Perry Motorsport S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto class. In the combined S1/S2 group, Williams was second overall in qualifying, beating out a number of top drivers in the timed session. Williams held his own against the S1 drivers, placing third overall in the opening heat and winning in class. Trouble struck in the second heat, as Williams retired after two laps with a mechanical issue. Returning driver Don Whittington

was able to fight off Matt Koerner for the race win. Williams fought back in the main event, coming from the back of the S1/S2 group. By lap eight, Williams regained the lead in the S2 field, pacing the class for the remainder of the 15-lap race to score the victory while placing third overall. Whittington finished runner-up in his return to California from Florida, with Jack Freese landing his first S2 podium over Koerner. Oregon driver Sting Ray Robb made a return to the California PKC program after a two year absence, with the 2013 SKUSA Pro Tour TaG Cadet championship podium finisher now into his second season as a Junior driver. Robb was able to beat out the competitive 17-driver field in the Nash Motorsportz TaG Junior category this weekend. The class was the only category to record official laps on a dry track before the rain moved in, with last year’s S5 Junior California PKC champion Nicky Hays edging out Dante Yu and Ethan Barrett for the pole position in qualifying. Hays slipped back at the start of the wet opening heat race, and Jake Drew went on to win the 10-lap race. The battle for the lead in the second heat was hotly contested, with rookie Trey Brown coming out as the winner just ahead of Robb. Leading all but the opening lap of the main event, Robb drove away to a near eight-second victory. Brown drove to second to land on the podium in his Junior debut weekend, with Colby DuBato third, also earning a first podium

result. Eric Nascimento Jr. and Hays capped off the top-five. The Mike Manning Karting TaG Master field welcomed a new driver to the club, Carlos Calderon, as the NorCal pilot made his class debut a victorious one, surviving the harsh conditions. Vatche Tatikian set the pace throughout the day, posting fast lap in qualifying while going wire-to-wire in both heat races. Tatikian led the first half of the main event until he slipped up, dropping him out of the top-five. That gave Brian Phillipsen the lead with Calderon in second. Carlos took over the lead on lap nine of the 11-lap race. Phillipsen tried one last time on the final circuit, making slight contact with Calderon and going off track. With a deflating left front tire, Calderon held on to score the victory. Phillipsen was unable to make it around on the final circuit, promoting 2014 Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix winner Kevin Manning to second. Tatikian climbed back to finish third over Tom Gerstner and Rob Brackett. The second stop of the California ProKart Challenge program is set for March 6-7 at the Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond – where the winners from Round 1 will also be presented with their trophies.
