The GoLakes Travel programme was an initiative, funded by the Department of Transport, and was delivered in partnership by Cumbria County Council, the Lake District National Park Authority and Cumbria Tourism.

Between 2011 and 2015 the aim has been to generate a step change in how visitors travelled to and around the South and Central Lake District, enabling them to make greater use of sustainable modes of transport, reducing the impact on the local environment and community whilst making their trip to the area more enjoyable.

As part of the Programme a series of wayfinding graphics and maps were developed to aid visitor orientation. This manual outlines the visual system that was developed, whilst showing how the mapping can be integrated into existing communication materials to provide user friendly continuity and consistency for the visitor.

All content incorporates evaluation from a feasibility study undertaken in February 2015.

This section explains what pictograms are used within the GoLakes Travel mapping system and how to use them.

These pictograms have been designed to give the visitors an instant view of the accessibility by various modes of transport. It tells them at a glance what transport is available and how long each mode will take.

The use of pictograms in the mapping system provides a multilingual display and minimizes the likelyhood of misinterpretation.

Pictogram sets (key)

This is the basic pictogram set to be used throughout all wayfinding systems. It is important that these are not used alongside any other pictograms.

Where possible, pictograms are to placed within the square or circular device, depending on their use (shown below).

Please note: these pictograms are not to be changed or edited in any way.

Holding Devices

Where possible, pictograms are to be placed within the square or circular holding device, depending on the use of the pictograms.

A. Used for services. i.e Bus Stop, Car Hire, Bike Hire, Boat Depo, Train Station.

B. Used for routes. i.e bike route, boat route, walk route, bus route.

C. Route & estimated time.Where there is a route and an estimated time, the double circle device will be used. This leads with the type of route, and followed by the time. (Times will be shown in more detail on page 9).

D. If the route is over one hour, there will be a triple circle device, holding the type of route, the estimated time of route in hours, and the estimated time in minutes.

The estimated time of routes are to be shown through the use of the device shown in figure A. A number will be given in multiples of five, which represents the amount of minutes the journey will take. This is also accompanied by a coloured block within the circle (each block equals 5 minutes).

These will be accompanied by an pictogram as shown in figure B. When the time is larger than one hour, the holding device will be increased to three circles (figure C) and the device will show the type of route, the amount of hours it will take and the amount of minutes, in that order. When the hour device is used, “hr” accompanies the number. In this case each block then represents one hour.

When multiple transportation times from one location to another need to be displayed, this device can be used. This lists the type of route along with its estimated time. The pictograms are placed inside the bar, alongside a written description of the route type.

The location is always placed in a “Reflex Blue Lake” coloured bar at the top.

To use the device, an invisible grid must be used. Each line represents 5 minutes, and begins from figure B, after the pictograms and text. The coloured bars extend to represent the times of the route. i.e The bus route is in blue (its allocated colour) and is extended to the third line of the grid (3 x 5 = 15).

This is to show the invisible grid and is not to be used on any finished design. This is the process that is to be used in order to get correct proportional values for estimated times.

When following the grid system (as shown above) this is what will be seen on the finished design. Note there are no grids shown, only simple blocks of colour which accurately represent the estimated time of each route type.

Figure A shows 3D versions of the building pictograms. These are used within the bird’s-eye view map.

These are used when a town or village needs to be given a size indication. Combinations are used to indicate how big the town or village is.

As shown in figure B, a building combination is also accompanied by a circular base.

This section explain which mapping elements are used, and the ways in which you can use them to create maps.

It will show the two types of maps used within the GoLakes Travel Signage and explain what each one is used for.

The GoLakes Travel Wayfinder Signs are © Copyright GoLakes Travel (Cumbria Tourism) December 2014.

Reminder

The purpose of the GoLakes Travel maps is to provide the visitor with essential way-finding information whilst promoting the use of public transport, bike hire, walking, electric bike hire and route information.

The maps use visual representations throughout to provide a multilingual display. The use of pictograms, routes and colour indications mean all people are able to recognise how they can travel to different locations.

Users may also want to add their own business location to the mapping system, which can be done through placing the name (in helvetica bold) in the desired location.

Page 13: Golakes travel...The GoLakes Travel programme was an initiative, funded by the Department of Transport, and was delivered in partnership by Cumbria County Council, the Lake District

These routes give a clear indication of direction and route type, creating a multilingual mapping system.

All major and minor roads along with all route types are in a solid line.

When mapping out routes, the lines in figure A are to be used. Each route is represented by the colour it has been designated, as shown.

When estimated times are being shown, these will be placed roughly half way through the route, representing the entire route time (figure B). Where possible it is not to be used at the start or end of the destination.

Welcome to WINDERMERE STATION

The plan view maps are to give a more detailed idea of the immediate area and its routes. This accompanied with the large bird’s-eye view map gives a strong perception of the users location and how they can get from one place to another.

When creating plan view maps all shapes must be based on a 45 degree angle. Corners are to be rounded where possible. Water/lakes are to be a 40% tint of 355 Sky blue. The background must be a 40% tint of 382 Moss. All content within the flat map must use the font Helvetica Nue LT Std.

Woodland areas are highlighted through the use of the tree pictogram. The pictogram is duplicated to cover the area of woodland. It is based on a grid, so that each row and column of trees are aligned. They are also aligned at 45 degrees. Where possible, these are to be in the colour 382 Moss.

If a “you are here” location is needed, then this is to be highlighted through the use of the eye logo in red, along with the words “You are here” and the name of the location. Any services within the immediate area can also be included underneath. This is grouped together in a white rectangle with rounded edges and an opacity of 80%.

This highlights built-up areas. This is 60% 382 Moss, and uses rounded edges. The angles are based on 45 degrees.

All roads are based on 45 degrees and use round edges.

Reminder

The bird’s-eye view map is used to give a general idea of location and timing between key towns and villages. It gives basic routes between locations, indicating the general directions of key routes. The map is accompanied by the estimated time devices as shown in figure A.

Houses are used to represent the main towns, giving an idea of the scale and identity of each town within the mapping system. The towns are also highlighted with a blue circle to give prominence (figure B).

Lakes within the bird’s-eye map give the impression of shoreline, through the use of inner shadows. Any boat routes or islands on the lake are to have a drop shadow to maintain consistency.

All pictograms and text are to stay flat on top of the perspective map.

Estimated times to each location.

Each town is highlighted in blue, with 3D buildings to represent the area. Each town will be laid out slightly different, giving them there own identity within the mapping system. The density of housing on the map reflects the size of the town or village.

This is the basic layout for the graphics when creating the main sign. Graphics are placed on the top three panels, with an initial introduction on the first, a general time and bird’s-eye view map on the second panel and a more detailed map of the location and an additional key on the third panel.

Every sign has, where appropriate, an engraved slate base panel with adoptee branding.

With over 27 years in commercial practice The Knack Design Consultants specialise in brand communication and bespoke environmental graphics programmes. Doing things differently and always adding an element of local vernacular to every project is a key feature of The Knack’s design execution.

A well executed environmental graphics or signing programme should be regarded as a vital asset to any village, town or city. An engagement, communication and marketing opportunity that welcomes, informs and educates every audience.

The Knack’s experience and expert knowledge in this field enabled them to work with the GoLakes Travel team to produce a set of Best Practice Guidelines as well as a series of on the ground way finder signs. This provided a one-stop solution for the client team.

Example 1

Client : South Lakeland District Council (SLDC).

Project : Kendal town centre wayfinder and orientation signs.

Objective : Provide essential orientation and location information for the town centre and encourage both locals and visitors to explore the history, vernacular architecture and diverse interests of the town.

Key Design Features : A modular ‘L’ configuration panelling system incorporating archive and history content with mapping. The main maps orientate through 360 degrees to aid navigation and sense of place for the user. A laser cut header panel integrated a unique Kendal Townscape visual feature that has been adopted as a standard marketing device by SLDC and Kendal Futures for town centre PRand communications.

Example 2

Client : Penrith Town Council.

Project : Penrith town centre signing.

Objective : 2013’s major project to redevelop the town centre. Adding the New Squares quarter required a comprehensive signing programmelinking the ‘old’ with the ‘new’.

Key Design Features : The robust outer frame represents the trademark architectural vernacular of North Lakes - the solid stone surrounds to much of the local historic buildings.Inside - the shield sign panels combine wayfinding and local interest information on routes encouraging pedestrians to journey between old and new Penrith.
