Parsha Question of the Week: SHABBOS HAGADOL?! The Tosafists (Shabbos 87b) explained that the designation of the Shabbos preceding Pesach as Shabbos Hagadol is in commemoration of the first Pesach in Egypt. Then, on the Shab- bos preceding their Exodus, the Jews set aside their lambs for the Paschal offering. This was highly dangerous, as these were the objects of worship of the Egyptians, yet the Egyptians were miraculously rendered helpless and unable to effectively respond. We know however that it was not Shabbos that was designated as the day to set aside their sacrifices, it was the tenth day of Nissan (Shemos 12:3). It happened (?!) however that on the year of the Exodus the tenth of Nissan was a Shabbos (see TB Shabbos 87b). Now we know that Jewish events are always commemorated on the specific date of the original occasion, rather than on the day of the week. We have no holiday weekends! Why then do we commemorate Shabbos Hagadol, whatever day of the month it happens to occur, rather than the tenth of Nissan? HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR: HOW MUCH TO DRINK? WINE OR GRAPE JUICE? Everyone is required to drink four cups of wine at the Seder, at the specific points defined in the Hagaddah. One is required to not simply take a sip of the wine, but to drink most of the cup, and the cup should be more than 3 fluid ounces (a Revi'is). If one only has a cup that is much larger and it is difficult for the person to drink most of it each time, then it is sufficient to drink for each cup at least 1.6 ounces (most of a Revi'is). Many people may find it difficult to drink that much wine. Is grape juice just as good? As the requirement of the Four Cups is to demonstrate joy and freedom, there are many (including HaRav Moshe Feinstein zt"l) who are of the opinion that this requires wine as opposed to juice. Nevertheless there are other opinions (including HaRav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt"l) that considered grape juice a very suitable alternative. As such, one who has difficulty with wine may use grape juice. An excellent Halachic compromise is the following: One may mix one third of a cup of wine with two thirds of a cup of grape juice for each of the four cups, giving each of the cups the Halachic status and the taste of wine, while limiting the actual alcoholic intake. This is Halachically superior to drinking wine for the first cups and then resorting to pure grape juice for the last two cups. Good Shabbos!

Parsha Question of the Week:

SHABBOS HAGADOL?!

The Tosafists (Shabbos 87b) explained that the designation of the Shabbos preceding

Pesach as Shabbos Hagadol is in commemoration of the first Pesach in Egypt. Then, on the Shab-

bos preceding their Exodus, the Jews set aside their lambs for the Paschal offering. This was

highly dangerous, as these were the objects of worship of the Egyptians, yet the Egyptians were

miraculously rendered helpless and unable to effectively respond.

We know however that it was not Shabbos that was designated as the day to set aside their

sacrifices, it was the tenth day of Nissan (Shemos 12:3). It happened (?!) however that on the year

of the Exodus the tenth of Nissan was a Shabbos (see TB Shabbos 87b). Now we know that Jewish

events are always commemorated on the specific date of the original occasion, rather than on the

day of the week. We have no holiday weekends! Why then do we commemorate Shabbos

Hagadol, whatever day of the month it happens to occur, rather than the tenth of Nissan?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR:

HOW MUCH TO DRINK? WINE OR GRAPE JUICE? Everyone is required to drink four cups of wine at the Seder, at the specific points defined in

the Hagaddah. One is required to not simply take a sip of the wine, but to drink most of the cup,

and the cup should be more than 3 fluid ounces (a Revi'is). If one only has a cup that is much

larger and it is difficult for the person to drink most of it each time, then it is sufficient to drink for

each cup at least 1.6 ounces (most of a Revi'is).

Many people may find it difficult to drink that much wine. Is grape juice just as good? As

the requirement of the Four Cups is to demonstrate joy and freedom, there are many (including

HaRav Moshe Feinstein zt"l) who are of the opinion that this requires wine as opposed to

juice. Nevertheless there are other opinions (including HaRav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt"l) that

considered grape juice a very suitable alternative. As such, one who has difficulty with wine may

use grape juice.

An excellent Halachic compromise is the following: One may mix one third of a cup of wine

with two thirds of a cup of grape juice for each of the four cups, giving each of the cups the Halachic

status and the taste of wine, while limiting the actual alcoholic intake. This is Halachically superior

to drinking wine for the first cups and then resorting to pure grape juice for the last two cups.
