President’s Foreword

Each and every person has in them something that makes them stand out amongst their peers, a little star inside each of them which makes the world a brighter place. At GPIC, we take pride in our people and strive to learn more about each one of us as we bond together in a Team. We have set out to find all your little stars and compile them into this book of Talents and Hobbies, and are truly proud to showcase them here.

We have long realized the importance of the human factor, which we consider to be the main element in our success and excellence. It is from this belief that the idea for GPIC’s Talent and Hobbies Directory emerged, to complement the series of outstanding books published by GPIC, as a means of allowing us to get to know our staff better, as well as giving them the opportunity to share with us their hobbies and talents.

There are many skilled people at GPIC, and we recognise and understand that behind the high level of professionalism that each of them possess lies a lot of talent. Therefore, we have taken this step in order to find out what talents our staff possess and to help them present, enjoy and share it with others. By doing so, we have created another circle of communication between our employees and contributed to promoting and strengthening ties between them, because we in GPIC work as one Team.

I have, since I can remember, always had some interest in photography. I like that you can never get the same photograph twice, each photograph taken is new art, has a new story. With photography, you can stop time and always remember it. When I am out taking photographs, I am always looking for something new, something that inspires me. This may be something as simple and common as a blade of grass that I see with water droplets on it, or a broken fence that, to me, tells a story of struggle and age. Whatever the object is, I try and find the story behind it, the one which it cannot tell by itself. My favorite photographs are the ones that pass on a feeling or story, not only to me but to all those who look at the photograph. These photos not only tell, but shout, a story or feeling.

Talking about stamp collecting, which is one of the world’s most popular hobbies: I am often asked why people like stamp collecting. So widespread a hobby can obviously have many different motives. I can answer only in regard to my own motives, which I have observed also in some of the stamp collectors I have met. The pleasure lies in a certain special way of using one’s mind. Stamp collecting is a hobby for busy, purposeful, ambitious people because, in its pattern, it has the essential elements of a career, but transposed to a clearly delimited, intensely private world. The minds of such people require continuity, integration and sense of moving forward. They are accustomed to working long-range. To them, the present is part of and a means to the future; a short-range event or activity that leads nowhere is an unnatural strain on them, an irritating interruption or

a source of painful boredom. Yet they need relaxation and rest from their constant, single-tracked drive. What they need is another track, but for the same train that is, a change of subject, using part of the same method of mental functioning.

Stamp collecting fulfills that need. It establishes a wide context of its own, interesting enough to hold one’s attention and to switch one’s mind temporarily away from exhausting problems or burdens.

Photography is a hobby that I have enjoyed since I was a child. I enjoy carrying my camera and walking around, trying to capture a special moment in my life. When I go back to my albums I am always touched by the things I am reminded about, specially photos of family members. When I start taking pictures I for-get everything and give my full attention to only one thing (my camera). I still remember one day when I went to take pictures in Manama Soukh; I was so in the mood that I kept walking and walking until I reached Al Hoora which was so far from my car. I believe that if you love something you will be good at it; but I still keep putting in a lot of effort to improve my talent whenever I have an opportunity.

Hard work and motivation led me to become the sports man I am today. Sports is part of my daily life, I don’t feel like it is part of a chore. I have learned that sports help enhance a person in their personal and social life as well as keep them healthy and looking good at the same time! It is something that requires great concentration, motivation and efficiency. I have learned that no matter how strenuous and tiring sporst and exercise may seem at the time it keeps our bodies healthy, strong and looking great!Talking about drawing, I have always been talented at drawing. I was always a hobby of mine as a way to pass time and express myself. So much so, that my eldest son (Mohammed) has inherited this talent he is a mini artist in the making!

Achievements :

• Created and led GPIC’s Men’s Fitness Program 2011- the transformation I saw in my colleagues has left me astonished- that in itself is more than any award I could have ever walked away. It helped me learn that results may not always show what matters more is seeing the person try as hard as they can and push themselves to the limit. This is indeed a great feeling of accomplishment.• Ran 20km in Riffa Views Marathon 2011.


I used to weigh 109kgs and was constantly being teased as the “fat man”, “elephant”, walking tent” and so forth. However, I have an amazing ability to transform any negativity into a positive thing. I took all the depression and transformed my body. In less than 6 months I lost over 41kgs.

“I like horse riding because the horses that I ride and the instructors that teach me are very friendly. Horse riding has taught me lots of new skills , its a hobby that is healthy and interesting. I like it as it gives me time to think and relax. Horse riding, like any other hobby or sport, has its own rules of etiquette which should be followed in order to fit in well and have an enjoyable and safe experience. While most seem like common sense they none the less should be fol-lowed at all times. Most of the time you will probably horseback ride in an outdoor arena or field, but in the case of inclement weather you will probably ride in an indoor arena.

Why cook? It means I can make something for those I love which (hopefully) they will enjoy. I also do it to please myself.

I love to sit down at the table and share food and conversation at the end of the day, I think that is the main thing. A meal cooked and eaten together is the vehicle to doing this.

For me, it’s a passion; my skill set is nowhere near as good as it will be in a few years, but I love cooking. I love when I succeed at a dish, and even though I’ll curse at myself for hours when I fail, I still love it.

I also enjoy cooking because it is a way to help people understand the food and minerals received through the Earth. The knowledge of realising where your food came from and how it is grown or raised is one of the most fascinating and important things I can learn about. I feel that if people can understand the food we eat, then they might be more inclined to preserve the way it comes to us, so that we give back to the Earth what we take from it.

My ultimate goal, I suppose, is for me to think that if I’ve had an tiring long busy day: (a) my food will be really excellent anyway, and (b) the process of making that food very rapidly and precisely will be the one thing that does go right that day -- and I will know that it will be so, in advance.

Talking about poems, it is my opinion that they are the best way to express feelings. I write poems whenever I am highly charged, and believe this is the best outlet for the questions, tensions, frustrations, wonders or joys that I experience in my day to day

life. Writing poetry gives me the chance to frame my thoughts and give life on a page with the words I choose to represent those ideas. It is an act of freeing my feelings by giving them a body, letting them take shape in front of me and finally, for them to have an impact on other people and move them in some way, as I was moved by the situation first.

I just like old cars. I’m more into classics. New cars are made to look better but for some reason the more new cars they make the more people like older cars. Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around.

Back in the day, cars were cars, not appliances. You know that human hands made it, not a robot. They just had more passion and flair about them. And were designed by gear heads, not accountants and computer engineers.

Vintage cars are basically cars that were manufac-tured in 1920s to 1950s. Today, you will see a lot of car shows with vintage cars as the main attraction. If you have a vintage car, then you will really want to show it off and put it in a car show. A lot of car enthusiasts even spend a fortune just to get their vin-tage car restored and in car show condition. In fact, some people even travel the world just to get a hold of a part that is very rare to find in order to get their car restored. And, if they don’t find one, they get a replica of the part custom made.

In my leisure time I always used to draw lines on my note books, in my childhood it became my hobby to draw different animals and birds. It is a very enjoyable hobby, whilst studing in university I was using Photoshop & Image ready to express myself. The present drawing is the real story, during the construction of the road in my village the road contractor took a lot of time and he kept the gravels more than six months and then removed, after three month again he kept the gravel for another six months. This situation I expressed in my said drawing.

To be a public speaker, you must know your audience. Teenagers have different dispositions and interests than do business executives. You will need to adapt your speech to the needs of your audience. In some cases, you may not even be able to talk about your subject to some particular groups; in others, you can still talk about your subject, but you will need to modify it to suit the needs of your audience. For instance, if your subject is “saving for retirement,” you might talk to business executives about how close they are to retirement and how, based on that, they might need to consider certain options. I play in positions 4 and 5 (near the ring) and I used to play for Sitra Club. It is my favorite thing to do in my free time. It provides competitiveness and a healthy workout. It is a sport that requires a lot of hand-eye coordination and swiftness. I love basketball because it is challenging, thrilling, and of course it is great for your health.

The reason I think basketball is an electrifying sport is because you have to be fast-paced, have decisive coordination and have some talent. In basketball you have to run up and down the court continuously, for 48 minutes, with only 5 minute breaks between each 12 minute quarter. The talent is mainly height or great ball-handling skills. If you don’t have either of them you will not succeed in the sport of basketball. The ball handling skills include having excellent hand-eye coordination and the ability to have immediate reactions.

Secondly, basketball is a remarkably challenging sport and you need to put in a lot of sweat and spirit into the game. In basketball, if your opposite number in the opposition is a taller. than you have to have fine ball handling skills. If you don’t, then the opponent will conquer you. Of course, that would be to some extent embarrassing.

Finally, basketball is a vigorous workout both physical and mental. It is a physical workout because you have to run, jump, shoot, and guard other physically powerful players. It is a mental workout because you

have to identify where and when to pass the ball to your teammates. In shooting you have to aim, and have the accuracy and power for the shot to go in.

But in the months past, I came to realize that despite my best efforts, I was not going to finish the project. It can be difficult to know when to abandon a project and when to persist, but if you still your mind, the project will let you know its intentions.

Why I love sewing: It is so easy to tell. It is simple..I am proud of being able to make something from scratch. There is nothing better than having a finished project after hours of concentrating. Sewing is creative Mostly I start something without really knowing how it’s going to end. The sewing project develops as it goes and my creative juices flow like crazy. Sometimes I sew with a machine but often enough I just sew by hand with a plain needle. For sewing you don’t need much. I love that. I find it very satisfying to have something beside my normal day job that keeps my mind working and makes me concentrate on a problem and try to solve it. It’s good for the brain and for the soul.

Collecting stamps (philately) is my hobby. I first started collecting when I was at school. Hockey and Cricket were my main sports during my educational period. There are also times when I watch lawn tennis, for example the Wimbledon Championships. In addition to my talent, in my spare time I like to read books and electronic media, books that are mostly based on religion, politics and to some extent Urdu poetry.

I believe that writing articles or stories is not an easy thing that anybody can do. It is a talent our god gave to some people but not all. Even for the expert writer, some times it is difficult for him to write a single statement.

Around the 4th millennium BC, the complexity of trade and administration outgrew the power of memory and writing became a more dependable method of recording and presenting transactions in a permanent form. In both Ancient Egypt and Mesoamerica writing may have evolved through calendrics and a political necessity for recording historical and environmental events.

Having undergone extensive training and development both in Bahrain as well as in Oman, I have held a number of senior positions in Sogex-Oman including Shift Engineer, Senior Shift Engineer (General Shift) and Acting Deputy Operations Superintendent (DOS) and with GPIC as Utilities Shift Supervisor for the last 14 years. I am a member of the Institution of Engineers, India, Bahrain Chapter. I am also a member of the Water Science and Technology Association (WSTA). I have presented two technical papers at the WSTA Gulf Water Conferences. I am the founder President of the Bahrain Malyalee Engineers (BME) and current President of Kerala Engineers Forum (KEEN4) in the Kingdom of Bahrain. I am also a member of the Indian Club Krypton Advanced TM & GPIC Toastmaster Clubs and am the immediate past Area Governor (Area #35) and the Assistant Division Governor. I was instrumental in establishing a Toastmasters Club in GPIC in 2008. I was practicing swimming every day for five years, as I truly enjoy the sport. Due to becoming increasingly busy and taking part in other activities whether job-related or otherwise, I rarely swim now. However, I am a fast but paced swimmer with regulated stamina and graceful movements.


My father was a good swimmer and accordingly, he was my greatest motivator for taking up swimming as a sport, as this is about the only sport that works every muscle in the human body. Also, because my work has a relative level of stress associated with it, I found that swimming was a great technique to unwind.

That way, you can see what he sees and correct any bad habits.

I started painting and making artistic handicrafts in school under the guidance of my art teacher. After that, I took it up as a hobby in my free time.


Famous painters such as Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo Da Vinci and Pablo Picasso have inspired me at a young age to try out painting as a hobby. I like to paint in different ways including water painting, oil painting on canvas and others. I mostly enjoy painting natural scenery and landscapes. As for handicrafts, pottery is the best way for me to relax from a busy day. Seeing how the soft clay transforms into a beautiful vase gives me a sense of satisfaction.

I have never been the sporting type. No matter what I tried I couldn’t find a sport that held my interest for very long. That’s when I decided that I would try at least one sport every year until I found something I liked. 2007 was the year I decided to try skiing. When you live in a city like Montreal, Canada, it is very difficult not to be tempted to try flying through the snow at a 45 degree angle. It started out as a fun day out with friends, one that I enjoyed very much. So much in fact that I asked one of my friends who happened to be a ski instructor to enroll me in her class. Over the next 12 weeks I would wake up every Saturday at 4 a.m., have a sandwich, pack my gear and take the bus for 20 blocks to where the class met. Every week we would head to a new mountain and try our skills on new trails.

Skiing is an excellent way to stay in shape and have fun with friends in the snow. Skiing is a recreational activity using skis as the equipment for travelling over snow. Skis are used in conjunction with boots that connect to the skis with the use of a binding.

Many different types of skiing are popular, especially in colder climates, and many types of competitive skiing events are recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Ski Federation (FIS), and other sporting organizations, such as the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association in America. Skiing is most visible to the public during the Winter Olympic Games where it is a major sport.

For me Photography is a passion. I grew up capturing all the nice things that I passed by. At an early stage, when I got my first camera, I couldn’t stop taking pictures Since then I knew I had some talent and I decided to move to another stage. In trying to become a professional photographer something funny happened to me when I went with my parents to attend the Asian Cup which was held in the State of Qatar. I went there to attend the match of the Kingdom of Bahrain against Australia, to promote our national team and on this occasion and before the start of the game for a few hours I practised using my new zoom lens, to be able to portray all the details of the game and get accurate images. The lenses that I had owned until then were mostly short-range and while I was busy filming, especially imaging movements of players and kicks, suddenly I saw through the lens the football heading directly towards me. I screamed loudly because I thought that the ball would hit me on my head!! However, the ball was nowhere near me, it was just the image in the new zoom lens that I had bought! At that point, I learned a new lesson; that I need to experience any lens and know its capabilities before using it at an event.

More recent research has focused on chess as mental training; the respective roles of knowledge and look-ahead search; brain imaging studies of chess masters and novices; blindfold chess; the role of personality and intelligence in chess skill; gender differences; and computational models of chess expertise. The role of practice and talent in the development of chess and other domains of expertise has led to a lot of research recently. These factors lead me to develop my talent.

Since I am a novice player in chess, I am planning to get training from an expert, which will take me through to the next level of chess skill.

Everybody has talents, but very few people make them really explicit, let alone develop them or use them to the full. What is more, everybody is different - only the person himself can really identify his key talents, decide on the best way to develop them, and work out how best to deliver them at their best.

But most people still need some guidance to do this. and this is where the role of parents’ & friends’ encouragement is a key factor in developing talent. Another factor is of course continuous practice.

I have been writing English poetry ever since I was a young girl; I write many different styles of poetry, some are sorrowful, some are cheerful, some are the consecutive chain of events that a human being endures and some are about those that I adore. In addition, I also play the piano, some well-known like “The Godfather” and some are creations of my own.

As for poetry, I trace the first time back during the gulf war, when I’d sit by my window and watch the moon interrupted only by the helicopters and war planes that whizz past, every now and then. I have composed and written many songs. My official beginning in composing was in 1987, a song for a Bahraini band which was then recorded as an album. I also composed some music for radio programmes (starting and ending music) then I created my own band “ Al Amwaj Band ” and produced my first album in 1992, the second in 1997 and participated in many festivals by writing a song or two. I also composed two songs for an Opera called “Dirat Hamad,” which was for Hawar Island. My latest was for Bahrain TV under national songs to songs, which is still under production, but I hope it will be released very soon.

Now I have my own studio, which was the dream of my life; to compose and execute songs fulfilling my soul and gaining some money to update my studio with the latest equipment, which is very expensive.

Music is not just a rhythm or a sound you hear, it is the soul of feelings and the emotional world. These words come from my experience expressing myself in music for more the 30 years.

When I hear any music, I feel it, live with it and process it then play it directly, even if it’s only vocal. (From a young age till now I have my instrument safe with me which I bought from my own savings.)

I feel the passion to learn all kinds of music and to play all the instruments in the world.

After mastering the art of playing instruments I started with acoustic instruments such as guitars and the Oudh. One of my relatives, who plays guitar fluently, taught me the basics; how to hold my fingers and get the sound that I want and then the chords, so I started strumming until I could play lead guitar / chord guitar / classic / Spanish/ bass guitar. Then I bought an Arabic Oudh and started to play. The main concept of most acoustic instruments is almost the same so I learned very fast and was playing in summer camps and some parties.

I joined many bands; Arabic, English and others, played at weddings, parties, clubs and studios, gaining more experience and making new friends. I also played at a lot of charity functions, widows homes, homeless and blind children.

My experience grew very fast so I started to express my feeling by composing music.

Most people think that composing music is very easy, just say the words with a tone and it will be a song, but this is totally wrong. Composing means to help the listener to know the words of the poem

I have been a self-learning music player since I was 8 years old, I started with rhythm instrument such as Bongos and the Arabic Tablah. I was always part of the music group of my school.

Then I started to play keyboard instruments such as the Melodica and the Accordion which I took too so easily I was able to jump many steps ahead to play the lead solo in some songs with the music group of the school, which was recorded by Bahrain TV as a School Activities programme, although I have never learned how to read musical notation.

Collecting Stamps was a hobby I pursued in childhood and school days. Some 25 odd years ago postal mail was the only reliable source of communication between families and loved ones. So I gathered quite a few stamps this way.

I became interested in collecting coins when one of my paternal uncles, who happened to be a merchant navy captain, became the main inspiration for this hobby. He would sail the seven seas and bring back coins from the many different countries he visited

I still have a sizeable collection of stamps from various countries and First Day Issues. I no longer collect them since writing letters and stamps is no longer in fashion due to the advent of the electronic age.

I have a good collection of various coins from different countries. Some are really vintage while others are contemporary.

My other talent is playing Squash, which has always been my favorite past time. I was the squash champion in school and also in my ex- company Fauji Fertilizer Company Ltd. I started playing squash when I was young enough to hold a racquet

Squash is considered to be in the blood of all Pakistan Air force personnel and my father was no exception. My father was an excellent squash player, while two of my brothers are also great players. I feel the same talent runs through my veins.

I build drag race cars from scratch, from designing the chassis to making the full body design from fibreglass and I use these casr to race. In short, it is all about acceleration – travelling a short distance as quickly as possible, from a standing start. Before each race (also known as a pass), each driver is allowed to perform a burnout, which heats the driving tires and lays rubber down at the beginning of the track, improving traction. Each driver then lines up (or stages) at the starting line (My Father was a mechanic so i used to watch him work).

I read an article a long time ago that the tradition of hunting with falcon is believed to have originated in Central Asia some 6000 years ago and later on to be adopted in Europe and other countries. falcon also fascinate me by their sharp vision and quick flight. The game is maddeningly simple, just kick the ball back and forth. But like the best music or the richest art, the simplicity combines into infinite complexity. No two games are ever exactly alike.

Every player has a role, but the role merely serves as a starting point. Forwards clear balls off their goal line, defenders, even keepers, score goals, wing players move into the middle, central players move outside. And it all unfolds on the fly. Teams may make plans, but they quickly need adjustment to meet changing circumstances. The players are all equal in responsibility and bring different strengths and weaknesses to the game, without limitations to their role.

The game offers only a few chances, which must be seized, as the saying goes, because you never know when or even if another chance may present itself.

Finally, the game has an allotted time span, but no one, save the referee, knows exactly when time is up.
