U nder the patronage of H.E. Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman, the Company recently held a major ceremony at the Gulf International Convention Centre on the occasion of receiving His Highness the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Industry, for major companies. At the opening of the event, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager, said in a speech that the award marked the achievements made by GPIC in various fields. He expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the continuous support and backing received by the Company from His Majesty the King Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister and His Highness Shaikh Salamn bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force. He added that given the spirit of hope and positive contributions within our constitutional monarchy, he is honoured to take pride in GPIC’s participation in this progress and development. The Company’s success in winning His Highness the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Industry is considered a major achievement not only for GPIC but also for Bahrain industry in general. He expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the pioneer of industrial progress, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister for his kind support and backing for industrial companies that are now strongly motivated for growth and development to diversify Bahrain’s sources of income. He also praised the continuous support given to GPIC by the Shareholders from Kuwait represented by Petrochemical Industries Company an Saudi Arabia represented by Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). He also thanked all the GPIC employees for their sincere efforts towards the Company’s growth and success that culminated in the outstanding results achieved through their co-operation and team spirit. He noted with satisfaction the employees’ high level of performance, compliance with the highest safety levels and protection of the environment and applying quality standards. He noted that it was encouraging that the Company’s success in winning this major award coincided with the Company’s 22nd anniversary and continuation of the high level of production efficiency in the three plants. Overall production of Ammonia, Methanol and Urea totaled more than 1,479 million metric tons or 8% more than the projected figure. Such products were marketed on the world markets, mainly the United States of America, South America, the Indian subcontinent and Japan. He further said he was pleased to congratulate all the employees of GPIC for winning the prestigious International Sector Award for Petrochemical Industries from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), United Kingdom in 2001. GPIC recently took part in the Career World Expoheld by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs

in co-operation with the Rotary Clubs. The vent washeld under the patronage of H.E Mr. Abdul Nabi AlShoala, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs.

H.E. the Minister accompanied by Ministry officialstoured the stands of participating companies andfirms. Upon their visit to the GPIC stand they werereceived by Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General managerand personnel officers in the Company. They werebriefed on the Company’s activities and concern withtraining Bahraini graduates.

GPIC also took part in the Career Day Exhibition heldat the University of Bahrain campus in Sakhir under the patronageof Dr. Majied bin Ali AL Noaimi, President of the University ofBahrain. H.E. University President toured the exhibition and uponarriving in the GPIC stand he was received by Mr. Fawzi Al Jaber,Administration Manager and Personnel and Training Departmentofficials. A briefing on recruitment and training in GPIC wasgiven.These events are designed to inform Bahraini job seekers,commercial and technical students and university graduates aboutavailable job opportunities and careers in a wide range of sectors.

The students who visited the stand expressed their admiration ofthe Company’s activities displayed at the stand.

Gulf Petrochemical IndustriesCompany (GPIC) received

members of the Board of Directors ofPetrochemical Industries CompanyKuwait, a major GPIC shareholder, atthe Company’s Sitra Complex tofamiliarise themselves with GPICoperations and management systems.The Kuwait visitors were briefed aboutthe reasons for the Company’s successand how it won several prestigiousawards.

On this occasion, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayedexpressed his sincere thanks andappreciation to PIC Kuwait’s Boardmembers for their continuous support toGPIC since its incorporation. In hisbriefing about GPIC’s operations, hespoke in detail about the Company’smanagement strategy, management of theComplex and its systems and programmesthat contributed to its remarkable successon regional and international levels.

It should be noted that GPIC showsconsiderable concern for the environment.and applies the internationalenvironmental standard ISO-14001 and

applies the advanced international qualitystandard ISO-9001:2000. For this reason,it received international awards inrecognition of adopting the two standards.

The distinctive aspects of GPIC’s concernwith the environment are demonstrated bysuch projects as the Charity Fish Farm,Charity Vegetable garden, landscapingscheme at the Complex and the latestproject is the setting up of the BirdSanctuary.

The Company’s achievements wererecently crowned by winning HisHighness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman AlKhalifa Award for Excellence in Industryfor Large Companies 2001. This award

was in recognition of the Company’snumerous achievements in the fields of theenvironment, health, safety, andcontribution to the economic developmentof the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Moreover, GPIC previously receivednumerous awards such as the GCC Awardfor Best Industrial Company in the field ofEnvironment in Bahrain, 1998 and theInternational Sector Award for Safety andOccupational Health from ROSPA, UK.

Coinciding with the International TreeDay, the Kuwaiti visiting delegationplanted trees in the Complex as part of theGPIC Oasis Scheme and landscapingactivities.

GPIC took part in the 31st IFTDO WorldConference which was held for the first

time in the Kingdom of Bahrain under thepatronage of H.H. Shaikh Khalifa binSalman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister under thetheme of "Power of Knowledge in a NewAge".

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Managerpresented on the second day of theconference a paper entitled "The combinedeffects of creativity, motivation and cultureon the success of an organisation". The thrustof the paper was to demonstrate professionalresearch into and practical experience withthe impact of creativity, motivation andorganisational culture on the performance ofan organisation becoming a world enterprise.He highlighted the fact that organisations,whether private or government owned, can be made to work effectively and efficiently provided the organisational culture can nurturecreativity, support learning and motivate the workforce.

It is worth noting that this highly professional paper was based on Dr Al Sayed’s extensive research in the field of management andfollows on to studies he had carried out as part of his doctoral thesis at the London School of Economics and Political Science, LondonUniversity, England.

Dr. Al Sayed also emphasised the importance of strategic transformation of the business of organisation in order to compete effectivelyand achieve success by utilising the five tasks of strategic management, which have been abbreviated as MOSIF. MOSIF is a newapproach to management and stands for Mission, Objectives, Strategy, Implementation and Feedback, Organisations need to followthese steps in order to ensure success in today’s global environment. The challenges of globalization require leaders to go beyond thenormal resources available to them in managing their organisations. Dr. Al Sayed’s research concluded that the most important resourceavailable to any leader or management team is their human resources. It is by utilising these valuable resources, tapping into thecreativity of the employees and motivating them towards achieving the organization’s objectives, that a positive culture is created. Thispositive culture should sustain the company’s success in today’s challenging environment.

GPIC recently took part in the

2nd International Gulf

Quality Conference organised by

the Bahrain Society of Engineers

in conjunction with the Saudi

Quality Board.

Mr. AbdulRahman Jawahery,

Plants Operation Manager

presented a paper that discussed

quality development and

practical steps for achieving

outstanding performance through

the optimum utilisation of the

quality system. This system, he

said, is based upon the

employees’ participation and

their positive contribution

towards enhancing the quality

concept. In his paper, he highlighted the tangible benefits of a

management team that is committed to the development of the

quality system as a means of achieving excellence.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager said he was

pleased with GPIC’s participation in this event since the

Company gained considerable benefits from the quality systems

applied to achieve excellence.

He also expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Bahrain

Society of Engineers for hosting this important conference and for

inviting experts and specialists in this field. He said he was

convinced that the Bahrain industrial sector gained a great deal

from the exchanges of ideas and expertise at this conference.

GPIC AT INTERNATIONAL QUALITY CONFERENCE

CHINESE DELEGATION VISIT GPIC

Mr. P. Hui, Deputy Chairman of China’s Sanochem and Mrs. Xiao Lui, Deputy General Manager recently paid a visit to GPICComplex. They were welcomed on arrival by Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager and senior managers of the Company.

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed gave them a detailedpresentation on production operations, product qualityand a number of international certificates awarded tothe Company in a wide range of fields. Then, theChinese group toured the plants and was briefed onsocial and environmental schemes. They also visitedthe Palm Tree Oasis in the Company and planted threebushes.

They expressed their admiration of the CharityVegetable Farm, Bird Sanctuary and Charity Fish Farsaying that such schemes are an advanced method ofpreserving the environment.

At the end of their visit, Mr. Hui Thanked Dr. MustafaAl Sayed for the warm welcome and hospitality. Theywished GPIC and its staff every success and progress.The General Manager presented a commemorativeplaque to the Chinese visitors hoping that their visitwould open up broader prospects of fruitful co-operation between the two sides.

Later they toured the GPICplants, Charity Fish Farm and Bird Sanctuary.

Having visited the Charity Fish Farm and familiarised themselveswith its noble objectives of protecting the environment bydeveloping fisheries in the Kingdom, the visitors lauded the stepstaken by the Company in preserving the environment around theComplex. They said the project was a pioneering example of therole of industry in serving the environment.

As part of the national campaignfor raising donations to support

the steadfastness of the Palestinianpeople against the Zionist war andsavage atrocities by the Israelioccupation forces and in response tothe call made by the generalCommittee of Bahrain Workers(GCBW), GPIC employees havedonated one day’s wages in support ofthe General Federation of PalestinianLabour Unions. On Saturday 4th May,2002 Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, GPICGeneral Manager received at his office Mr. Abdul Ghafar AbdulHusain, GCBW Chairman to present to him a BD. 8,785 chequerepresenting the total donations of the Company’s employees.

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed said all the Company’s employeesdemonstrated their positive response and hastened to approve thededuction of one day’s wages from their salaries. He said suchaction was the least that could be done to support our brethren inPalestine whose cause concerns the entire Arab and Islamicnation. He also paid tribute to the continuous efforts made by

GCBW to raise funds for the benefit of the Palestinian labourunions.

Meanwhile, Mr. Abdul Ghafar Abdul Hussain expressed histhanks and appreciation to HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa,Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed,General Manager and the Company’s management for its speedyresponse and backing for the idea proposed by GCBW. Heexpressed the hope that other companies and firms would followGPIC’s example in supporting this noble humanitarian cause.

On 1st May, 2002 GPIC exported the biggestshipment of Urea granules totaling 41797.867

metric tons from the Company’s Urea shipping terminalin Sitra on board the ship "M.V. BRITANNIA". Theshipment was consigned in favour of the AustralianPivot Company.

This is the third Urea shipment to Australia. The firstshipment was 10,000 metric tons and the secondshipment was 40,000 metric tons that were exported toHI-FERT PTY LTD. The ship was loaded in a recordtime of 70 hours. General Manager, Dr. Mustafa AlSayed expressed his appreciation of this excellentachievement and congratulated all the employeesinvolved n the safe loading of the ship.

It should be noted that GPIC has recently received aninternational Urea quality award from France inrecognition of its high quality standards.

As part of ongoing co-operation for exchange of expertise between GPIC and petrochemical affiliates of Saudi Basic Industriescorporation, a group of engineers, operators and technicians from the Company’s Plant Operations recently visited the plants of

Safco and Ibn Albytar, in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.

The visits were aimed at getting acquainted with different manufacturing technologies of Ammonia and Urea. Such visits contributeto the development of Bahraini manpower to enable them to occupy key positions in the Company. and awareness enhancement lectures for students. A group ofGPIC engineers visited a number of government and privateschools to lecture, in both Arabic and English, on protection of theenvironment and how to fight pollution’s harmful effects.

The students and teachers who attended the lectures showed theirconcern and interaction in discussing the issues that the lecturers

covered.Commemorative gifts were presented to the students to encouragethem to show more concern for the environment. Organization ofthese lectures takes place as part of the GPIC Environment Sub-committee’s activities to give more information to the studentsand to reflect the Company’s interest in protecting theenvironment neighboring its complex. The lectures were highlycommended by the students who showed their active participationin the events.

As part of the Company’s ongoing policy of arranging training and development courses for its employees to enhance theirmanagement skills.

* Dr. Mohamed Saleh Chief Medical Officer and Hussain Jaffer from Medical Centre went to UAE to attend a course on the"Occupational Health Service Workshop and Exhibition" during the period from 26 – 30 January, 2002.

* Mr. Jassim Al Essa from Finance Department attended a course on the "Advanced Cash Management Strategies" in UAE, duringthe period from 17 - 20 February, 2002.

GPIC OBSERVES WORLD TREE DAY

GPIC observed World Tree Day with a largenumber of employees donating different kinds of

trees to be planted in the Complex, believing that abeautiful and clean environment was vital for safe andhealthy working conditions. Donors totaled more than505 employees whose trees were planted in variouslocations to beautify the trees in various siteslandscape at the Complex. Several prominent visitorsand guests of the Company also took part incultivating trees.

GPIC management, led by Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed,General Manager shows considerable interest inprotecting the environment and feels that looking afterthe environment is the responsibility of all.

As part of the activities of theHealth Sub-committee in the

Company, a high blood pressureawareness campaign was jointlyorganised with the BDF Hospital.

The event included two days oflectures in both Arabic andEnglish delivered by Dr. AbdulRahman Buali, Internal MedicineConsultant and BDF HospitalMedical Chief of Staff.Specialists also checked theemployees’ blood pressure. A 2.5kilometer walk inside theCompany’s premises took placewith 140 employees taking partin this walk.
