Wake to a sunny day, dress for work or play, fix a little breakfast, pack a light lunch and head to work or play. Now for a great human in- terest story to break the routine of driving Highway 20 going to work and heading back home to the farm south and east of Dike. Michele Henze is in her Jeep, when on the shoulder of the road she can see a small pink pig standing and waiting for someone to rescue him or her. Michele stops and another kind soul is also in on the rescue but lives in town so Michele plac- es piggy in her Jeep on top of her Fischels “for sale” signs and heads to the farm. Beat up from what was a fall from someones truck or trail- er this little pig found his own Green Acres. Michele and her daughter Emma inspect the pig for inju- ries and keep him over night in the family garage and by morn- ing he was up and ready for the fresh out of doors. This calls for action from farmer Steve Hen- ze to build a fenced in pen. A family affair that will keep them smiling and sharing the story about the little pig that lived on their farm. A family adventure that has not yet come to a close. Little, lets call him Wilbur the Pig, is being fed and cared for until the Cedar Rapids Animal Rescue physicality can make proper ar- rangements. Always fun on the farm and what nice folks to the rescue. For years the bird watchers in Dike have been blessed with an abundance of bald eagle sightings, and they again were nesting successfully and pro- ducing offspring. On the morning of June 30, Superintendent Justin Stock- dale discovered a fledgling on a bench at the school. Not a bald eagle, not a falcon, but a Cooper's hawk. The DNR Of- ficer, Pat Jorgensen, and an aspiring master falconer, Scott Bachmann, discovered a Coo- per's hawk nest in the tree at the school. Through a special training program, Bachmann obtained a tag to secure a fledg- ling from the nest specifically for the purpose of falconry. The females are preferred for train- ing and Bachmann will train and he will return to classrooms across northeast Iowa to share his progress. Scott and Pat have confirmed that the hawk will re- turn to DNH in the future. I have learned that the Coo- per's hawk will nest, have ba- bies and it ability to kill prey is with their claws. The falcon, when feeding their young, kills it's prey with its specalized beak. The training begins when the birds are younger than a year old and our picture shows the young age by the looks of their feathers. Another fun na- ture event in Dike. Adventure in Falconry 4th of July weekend The 4th is done and gone. It was a hot weekend and the sparks did fly. Several evenings of entertainment were viewed or heard. Most detonations were viewed or heard during the reg- ulated time schedules and no injures have been reported. Fox Ridge fireworks were enjoyed by the many families watch- ing from their back yards, cars parked in the Fox Ridge lot and many families watched from their cars parked along the road ways.
