Introduction of this project14/1/2014, we were given a task to find out
about the temperature of places in our school.
There is a total of 7 locations.A 2 day long project.Given a device that costs $100 so we must
handle it with care. The seven locations are:
Top floor of Multistorey carpark
Garden outside printing centre
Open space between canteen and block C
Terraces
Field
Running tracks
Fountain area outside General office
HypothesisOur hypothesis is that places that are
concrete surfaced will have a higher temperature than places that are not concrete surfaced as concrete absorb heat easily compare to the other locations.
Temperature of the first day (14/1/14)Sites Temperature 150cm above ground
Description of location
Top floor of Multistorey car park
31.6 cloudy
Garden outside printing centre
30.3 cloudy with vegetations
Open space between canteen and Block C
31.7 clear
Terraces 30.7 slightly cloudy
Field 30.8 cloudy
Running Track 30.8 slightly cloudy
Fountain area outside General office
30.8 slightly cloudy, beside water
Temperature of the second day (15/1/14)Sites Temperature 150cm above ground
Description of location
Top floor of Multistorey car park
29.1 cloudy, windy
Garden outside printing centre
27.6 shady with vegetations
Open space between canteen and Block C
30.2 shady
Terraces 27.7 slightly cloudy
Field 28.7 slightly cloudy
Running Track 28.9 cloudy
Fountain area outside General office
28.0 shady, beside water

The data collected is different from the finding of class 2o4.
The reason is because it was done at different time so there will be changes in temperature.
There are no surprising discoveryBut we can conclude that places with plants
are cooler than places that does not.
Revisiting hypothesisOur hypothesis is that places that are
concrete surfaced will have a higher temperature than places that are not concrete surfaced as concrete absorb heat easily compare to the other locations.
It was rejected as places that are not concrete surfaced turn out to have a higher temperature than places that are. The field which is not concrete surfaced have an average of 29.75C but the terraces which is concrete surfaced have an average temperature of 29.20C.
Due to the fact that there are a lot of trees around the school, there will be a lot of shade.
So we cannot confirm that places with concrete surface will have a higher temperatures as there are always other factors that are affecting it.
UnderstandingThis project allowed
us to understand the topic much better as we learned how little factors can make a big change.
This project make the topic easier to understand compared to just using textbook knowledge as the project is interesting, fun and engaging.
Thank you!
