HBR President's MessageJanet Young

Dear Hadassah Sisters and Associates,Now is the time to Choose Where to Make Your Impact and

Brooklyn Region is doing just that!Welcome to our Fall 2013 Brooklyn Region Bulletin! We have

settled in from the activities of the High Holiday season and are in full swing. Thereare many wonderful opportunities for you to Make Your Impact by participating inmany chapter and region events and contributing to our mission of tikkun olam.

We have exciting Associate News! I am thrilled to announce that our BrooklynHadassah Associates have just launched their first Brooklyn Region HadassahAssociates Newsletter. Todah Rabah to Ronnie and Shelli Feldman, our BrooklynHadassah Associate Co-Chairs. Their leadership will bring Brooklyn’s HadassahAssociates to new heights in the next decade! AND - Mazal Tov to Burton Krull! Atthis summer’s Hadassah National Board Meeting in Baltimore, Burt was electedExecutive Vice President of the National Committee of Hadassah Associates(NCHA.) Kol haKavod! Well done!

Did you know that October 26th is national “Make A Difference Day?” It is a niceway to make people aware of the need to set aside at least one day a year to make adifference. But, we in Hadassah, do that every day. We know that Hadassah is notjust about parties, book clubs, and luncheons. Yes, we all enjoy the fun, as well aslearning new opportunities for involvement on many levels. However, Hadassahempowers its members and supporters, as well as youth in Israel and Americathrough opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy and Jewishcontinuity. Hadassah is ultimately about ensuring that we fulfill our mission toenhance the health of people worldwide through stellar medical care and trailblazing research at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem, and across theglobe through Hadassah International. At Hadassah, every day is Choose Where toMake Your Impact Day!

Hadassah women make an impact in everything they do. Every event we holdhas a special meaning. In addition to the fantastic events our chapters have plannedfor you, Brooklyn Region has education seminars, game days, luncheons andconcerts to brighten your days and provide individual opportunities to make yourimpact on the work of Hadassah. Our Hadassah Associates are men who recognizethe noble and life-affirming goals of Hadassah. They support Hadassah, the Jewishpeople, and the State of Israel by expanding relationships and identifying newsources of funds. Hadassah women and men know what needs to be done, and theydo it! We each make a personal impact by going forth with our important Hadassahwork, planting ideas, cultivating new members and contributors, growing greatappreciation in them as we nurture the future at the Sarah Wetsman DavidsonHospital Tower, Youth Aliyah, the Hadassah Academic College and Young Judaea.

Parshat Lekh Lekha teaches us that we must move outside of our natural comfortzone because we believe that what we are doing is important. As our founder,Henrietta Szold of blessed memory taught us: We study a problem, strive for themost effective, most humane solution, and then proceed to do the impossible andaccomplish miracles! That’s practical Zionism at its best.

Let each of us continue to choose to make our own personal impact with devotion, passion and dedication. May we all go from strength to strength in 5774 to “ChooseWhere to Make Our Impact,” to continue the important work of Hadassah!

Brooklyn Region News 3 Fall 2013

We started off the New Year with a Go Forth and Studysession with a discussion of "In the Garden of the Beast:Terror, Love and Family”. There was a lively discussion ledby Laura Goldberg, about what we already know, what welearned, and what we didn't want to think about and howsomehow we don't learn from history.

On November 18th we will be discussing “The FinklerQuestion” and after in January “The Wanting” by MichaelLavinque. In February we are looking forward to our ownand remarkable Susan Aranoff presenting at our WinterEducation Sessions - stay tuned for what she will bediscussing.

We are so proud of the progress our Ivrit L’Hadassahstudents have made and of their wonderful morahs Joyceand Esther and the new morah in training Ava. There are alsothe Fall and Spring conferences in conjunction with IJLB.

We hope you can join us at as many of these wonderfulevents as you can.

FUNDRAISING REPORTAlma Krull V.P. Fundraising

I know you are committed to saving livestoday and tomorrow in both Israel and theworld.

Did you know that Israel has developed acompound that shrinks lung cell tumors? Itis presently in its third clinical trial. Yousupply the means by which Hadassah canpursue its research.

Not only are we saving the lives ofwomen today, but we are affecting thefuture of their children. Hadassahdeveloped a technique calledPreimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)whereby an egg is fertilized through in-vitro fertilization, and three days later, theembryo, now consisting of 6-10 cells, isexamined to see if it is carrying a breastcancer mutation. If a BRCA mutation isfound, that particular embryo is not chosenfor implantation, ensuring that thewoman’s children will not carry themutated gene.

These are only two examples ofHadassah’s mission of healing andresearch. Every time you contribute toHadassah you are helping to savesomeone’s life today, or tomorrow. It couldbe your life or a loved one’s life.

The most heartrending performance of the afternooncame from our newest and youngest artist, AnthonyHoliday. He evoked tears and a standing ovation forhis performances of two original pieces written byhim.

Our favorite “Pop” heartthrob, Edmerald Gan,dedicated his two smoking hot Spanish songs to ouryoungest guest (10 days old), Ava Rose Lefkowitz, who showed her appreciation by letting mommy,Esther, enjoy the concert. Edmerald’s performanceturned the heat way up at EMJC!

Julian Treslove, a professionally unspectacular and disappointed BBC worker, and Sam Finkler, a popular Jewish philosopher, writer and television personality, are old school friends. Despite a prickly relationship and very different lives, they've never quite lost touch with each other - or with their former teacher, Libor Sevick, a Czechoslovakian always more concerned with the wider world than with exam results.

There is a sweetly painful evening of reminiscence in which all three remove themselves to a time before they had loved and lost; a time before they had fathered children, before the devastation of separations, be-fore they had prized anything greatly enough to fear the loss of it. Better, perhaps, to go through life without knowing happiness at all because that way you had less to mourn? Treslove finds he has tears enough for the unbearable sadness of both his friends' losses.

The Finkler Question is a scorching story of exclusion and belonging, justice and love, aging, wisdom and humanity. Funny, furious, unflinching, this extraordinary novel shows one of our finest writers at his brilliant best.

The book is available at the Brooklyn Public Library and book sellers like our ParkSlope Amazon.com online store.

started two days after Labor Day and enveloped us inour ancient traditions until almost the very end of themonth. Even the weather cooperated to give uspleasant days. I sincerely hope that all of you enjoyedthe High Holidays.

Our first General Meeting, held on September 23rd ,was a delightful and educational pause in a hecticmonth. Approximately fifty members of DenaHadassah attended our first of the year Book andAuthor event. Richard Lucas, author of “Axis Sally”,

was our guest for the evening. His expertise on the lifeof Mildred Gillars, Germany’s answer to Tokyo Rose, along with his superb audio visual materials broughttremendous insight into the life of one who is now notvery well known for her traitorous work during WWII.After reading his book, it was exciting to hear that Mr.Lucas is now researching a new book dealing with theNazi Bund in America. Hopefully, we will have theopportunity to host the author at a future Denameeting. Thanks go to Karen Black for bringingtogether all the elements of a super successful evening.

Joe Sondock of Houston, TX, chose Hadassah toreceive the proceeds of his bar mitzvah project. What made him perform this act of tzedakah?

"This past year, I volunteered with the West ULittle League Challenger Division. This annual sixweek program gives every child a chance to playbaseball, regardless of their limitations.

“As a result of this experience, I will be donatinga portion of my bar mitzvah gifts to Hadassah in

their honor. These funds will be designated to Hadassah MedicalOrganization's efforts in Israel and around the world to research anddevelop therapies for injuries and conditions that cause physical andmental disabilities.”

Hadassah's bar/bat mitzvah program makes tzedakah easy, meaningful, and fun! Visit us at www.hadassah.org/mitzvahproject.For help making your personal plan, call Sheila Katz @ 718.382.6454.
