Meet Barbara Duffy Lindblad. In January she will be the new Interest Group chair for the Daytime Book Group. NEWS editor, Carol Matarese, met with Barbara for the December Profile of the Month.

Profile of The Month

NEWS’ December Profile of the Month is Barbara Duffy Lindblad. Barbara and her hus-band, Ernie, moved to HL in 2014.

CM: First, congratulations on becoming the new chair of the Daytime Book Group!

BDL: Thank you! I am looking forward to chairing the group. I love to read and there is nothing I like better than settling into my chaise lounge on our porch on the lake with a good book. The group has selected a variety of interesting books to read for the coming year, so it should be fun.

CM: Besides reading what other interests do you have?

BDL: I love to garden and took the Master Gardener course at University of Connecti-cut many years ago. I served on the CT Master Gardener Association Board and on the Windmill Harbor landscaping committee. Currently, I am on the Grounds Committee at Hampton Lake. I also designed the landscaping for our home; luckily my husband is will-ing to dig holes, so we planted much of it ourselves.

CM: Tell us a little about your life before moving to South Carolina.

BDL: I grew up in Glen Ridge, New Jersey and graduated Seton Hall University with a degree in communications. I moved to Connecticut after college and went to work for AT&T in sales – typically a male position – but AT&T was trying to move women into non-traditional roles at that time. Having a couple of older brothers who always recruited me for their football teams prepared me well! I worked my way up the ladder holding various positions throughout the company. I then went to work for Comcast where I eventually took over as Marketing and Installation Director for CT. I finished up my career consulting for AT&T on national cable phone line projects.

I was married and divorced at a young age and was a single Mom for many years. I met Ernie on a blind date through a mutual friend. We were married 23 years ago. He had four kids and I had one so between careers and family, we were very busy. And now we have 7 grandchildren!

CM: What brought you to Hampton Lake?

BDL: When we started planning our retirement, we first bought a condo in Palmetto Dunes. We loved the area so ended up buying in Windmill Harbor where we lived for 10 years. We’d always been drawn to Hampton Lake; lakes have been a part of my life. My family had a summer home on a lake in Connecticut and Ernie and I bought a summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. That’s probably why Hampton Lake was immediately appealing to me.

CM: What do you like about Hampton Lake?

BDL: We love living on the lake and our family loves to visit. We like the downtown Bluffton area and that small town feeling you get when you go to a parade or run into a neighbor when you are out for a cup of coffee. Hampton Lake is a special place and so are the people; I feel lucky to live here.

CM: Thank you for letting us get to know you, Barbara!

American Mah Jongg – Evening (coed)Evening Mah Jongg meets every Wednesday at 6 pm in the Lakeview Room. New members are always welcome and lessons can be arranged. Contact chair Jennifer Parker. The 2017 card can be purchased at www.nationalmahjonggleague.org beginning in January.

Art GroupAt our November meeting we had two presentations on pottery. Shir-ley Bacher brought several pieces of her Red Ware Pottery, which was predominantly made in Pennsylvania. The older ones had lead in them and are used for display only. Many of the newer pieces are lead-free and can be used for food as well as for display. She showed us a video demonstrating the process of creating these colorful pottery pieces. Next Lynn Oberg brought several of her pieces of Southwest Native American Pottery. This pottery is made mostly in New Mexico and Arizona. These pieces of pottery were made in the various pueblos (towns). Each had their own distinctive differences. They were created by putting rings of clay on top of a base and then smoothing the clay. This is different than the Red Ware Pottery which is thrown.

The Studio Group met on November 15 and was led by member Linda Meacham. She helped the group do decorative painting on a tin snow-man ornament. The final holiday decoration could be used as a gift or for their own home. There is no December Studio Group meeting due to the holidays.

The next meeting of the Art Group Discussion section is on December 6. We will be viewing various Art Sleuth short documentaries on evaluating specific works from Van Gogh, Manet, Botticelli, Rembrandt, Bellini and Bruegel. Each is an in depth study of one of their paintings. This will help us have a better sense of how to appreciate the full impact of a painting.

If you would like more information about this group or would like to be added to our distribution list please contact Barbara Hege or Pat Roth.
