Course Description: Specifically, for Patrol Deputies and Patrol Sergeants, this course presents an in-

depth critical analysis of the past and present evolutions of Arrest, Search, and Seizure jurisprudence,

case law, and relevant statutes. Additionally, this course will fulfill TCOLE mandated course

requirements and provide the students with an understanding of legal issues affecting law

enforcement. It will include an in-depth analysis of arrest, search, and seizure guidelines and case law

interpretations. This course will be taught over the course of 2 days.

Hours: 4 Course Description: The course objectives include in-depth discussion and identification of certain legal aspects of racial profiling, legislative requirements placed upon peace officers and law enforcement agencies regarding racial profiling, Supreme Court decisions and other court decisions involving appropriate actions in traffic stops, and the logical and social arguments against racial profiling. Further objective include, the identification of the elements of both inappropriate and appropriate traffic stops, racially motivated traffic stops, traffic stops which would constitute reasonable suspicion of drug courier activity, and traffic stops which could constitute reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.

Course Description: The course objectives include, law enforcement encounters with aggressive dogs

and other animals are generating more and more media attention and use of force against animals is

being questioned. Proper training will both prepare officers for these encounters and reduce criticism

when force has to be used. The class will teach officers how to recognize canine aggression and

interpret body language. Officers will learn defensive tactics and how to use less-lethal techniques in

controlling canine encounters.

concepts of instruction and to increase the quality of professional law enforcement training. This course

introduces the student to the teaching-learning process, phases of the teaching-learning process, factors

affecting learning, preparing a lesson plan, and methods of instruction. The students will be taught how

to develop and use instructional media to enhance their presentations. In addition, the fundamental

techniques of developing testing and evaluation procedures will be presented. Each trainee must

demonstrate the basic knowledge and skills required to effectively instruct a lesson during two teaching

exercises which will be evaluated by two instructors. The students are encouraged to bring with them

a laptop, notepad, and writing utensil of their choosing.

Course Description: The course objectives include expounding upon the student’s knowledge

pursuant to what they acquired from the Basic Instructor’s Course. The student will be expected

to create a presentation lasting from 45 minutes (minimum) to 50 minutes (maximum) for the final

grade. The presentation will require a course folder along with a copy of the Instructor’s

PowerPoint presentation, which will have digital media embedded within it.

DISCLAIMER: Under Texas Administrative Code Title 37 – Public Safety and Corrections / Part 7 – Texas

Commission On Law Enforcement / Chapter 221 – Proficiency Certification (221.28 – Instructor Advanced

Certification) – Registrants must hold a TCOLE Instructor License (Basic) for at least 3 years before

Course description: The student will be able to summarize the legal aspects of a crime scene

search. The student will be able to identify related constitutional and criminal laws related

to a crime scene search. The student will be able to define a search warrant. The student

will be able to describe certain requirements of a search warrant. The student will be able

to explain some justifications for denying unauthorized persons access to a crime scene.

The student will be able to summarize a process for preparing a crime scene investigation.

The student will be able to explain important considerations for establishing a command

post center and a search team. The student will be able to identify a guideline for

determining the search method and a starting point of the search. The student will be able

to list the various types of search methods. The student will be able to identify some

investigative tools and equipment that are recommended for performing crime scene
