PRESENTING SPONSORS The theme for this year’s event is “Technology and Automation”. The event begins at noon with a picnic lunch featuring grilled hamburgers, brats, potato salad, calico beans, dessert and more. During lunch we will hear from Jeremie Pav- elski, co-chair of the Groundwater Task Force. Jeremie’s presentation is entitled “Agriculture Water Use - The Facts: Where we were, Where we are, and the Technological Revolution”. Agriculture is a key component in our economy when it comes to jobs, services, and community support. Wisconsin Growers are using some of the latest technology to help ensure water stew- ardship. Jeremie will deliver a brief overview of the technology that was used in the past, is used now and emerging technologies on the horizon. He will interact with attendees and test our knowledge on agriculture and water. After lunch, we will head to an irrigated field in Plover where Paul Roberts, owner of Roberts Irrigation will lead the group. In the early days at Roberts Irrigation the normal irrigation pipeline was made of steel, they were heavy, and they were carried from place to place in the field. Simple “big gun” sprinklers were used to irrigate large areas and required a tremendous amount of hand labor. Technology and high tech were not words in anyone’s vocabulary. Since the beginning of the company in 1957, the state of water application devices has changed dramatically. Attendees at our Ag Tour event will see first-hand how farms truly are high-tech and how that has allowed farms to produce more food with less resources, in particular water. We will see a complete install, discuss the water saving technologies that are employed and view a variety of major new advancements. What they have to say \\ The Humane Society of Portage County (HSPC) is having a very exciting year!

We have hired a full-time Veterinarian – Kim Peacock. Having a full-time veterinarian provides us with the means to expand our medical services for our sheltered animals and the possibility of helping low income families. Thanks to initiatives by Doctor Kim, we now have an intake room that helps to ensure strayed, abandoned, or surrendered animals are receiving the proper medical attention before joining our other sheltered residents.

Presently, we are working on plans for an animal play yard that will be used to expand the socialization experience for our dogs. We are also excited about the new life our website and Facebook page have taken. And, our newsletter is now presented to our supporters in color.

Our volunteers and supporters have been a major part in the success of our recent events which include the Top Dog – Mayoral Canine Campaign, Walk for Wags, Golf Outing, and our recent rummage sale. We are now gearing up for Fur Ball which is our annual family fun night that features the largest basket raffle in Portage County with a great selection of silent auction items.

The heart and soul of all these efforts is for the animals we serve. Hundreds of dogs and cats come to us each year needing our help and the support of our community members.

One benefit for our Humane Society to renew our PCBC membership on an annual basis is the opportunity for us to stay in touch with the many community members who share our mission to protect the animals we serve. We see that businesses and organizations are united through the PCBC’s mission to provide area information, assist with workforce development, and support members. Three words that best describe the PCBC: Professionalism, Service, and Dedication.

Ministry Breast Care Center encourages women and their

support people to keep a vigil for breast health all year, and especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but when diag-nosed early, the five year survival rate is 98%. Breast cancers diagnosed at an early stage often involve fewer proce-dures, have better outcomes and have lower costs. Screening mammograms may be able to detect breast cancers up to 4 years before they are palpable, thus allowing patients much earlier treatment.

Busy women don’t have to neglect their health. With walk-in time slots for screening mammograms, available funding and patient navigators, early detection can help save a life.

LEADERSHIP PORTAGE COUNTY - OPENING RETREAT» CLICK HERE TO VIEW LPC BLOG

On the morning of August 22nd, the 2014-15 Lead-ership Portage County (LPC) program participants met at the Portage County Business Council to begin their ten-month leadership journey. After a brief networking session with Todd Kuckkahn from

the Stevens Point Catholic Schools, participants went on a bus tour of Por-tage County hosted by Anton Anday which included a stop at the Rising Star Mill in Nelsonville. On Saturday the 23rd, participants met at Boston School Forest where they learned about the facility through a scavenger hunt. The two-day retreat ended with a Road Rally. The opening retreat is just the beginning for the LPC participants. During the year, LPC participants develop their leadership skills, learn about Portage County and network with other community leaders. The most productive changes in the community will require efforts by individuals who have the ability to lead effectively and LPC is dedicated to fostering, renewing and sustaining leadership for our community.

Purchasing Portage County gift certificates continues to be a successful way to “Buy Local”.

Portage County gift certificates make great gifts. Gift certificates can be purchased at area banks, credit unions, the Convention and Visitors Bureau or at our office. They can be used at any business with a Portage County address and are available in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $25, $50 & $100.

The PCBC would like to thank everyone who participates for helping make the program successful. We would also like to thank BMO Harris Bank for their financial support of the gift certificate program.
