Hope you have enjoyed your summer - TheOlympics brought us no problems and in fact it hasbeen a peaceful summer from our point of view. The local Police re-structure is beginning to bed innow but just to explain in brief how we as aCommunity Team work. There is myself - PS Ruth Hammerton, then PC TedAnderson who covers from Herstmonceux toHeathfield and the villages in between and Tedworks with Liz McDonagh who coversHerstmonceux and the villages, Geraldine Hodgenswho covers the north east side of Heathfield and outto Three Cups and Fleur Whitaker who covers thetown centre. PC Kelly Simmonds covers Horam toWadhurst and villages in between - with PCSO’sPaula Mackie who covers Horam, Waldron, Cross inHand and Fives Ashes, Matt Boyle who coversRotherfield and Mayfield and Matt Neve who coversWadhurst. We do not do the 24/7 response type calls - this iscovered by response units - and any subsequentinvestigations that may be generated from their workgoes to the investigations team. Our job is to deal with the quality of life type issueswith a view to finding long term solutions to prob-lems that are adversely affecting day to day life. Thisdoes in itself have a positive effect on crime levels. Each PCSO will visit any residents who have beenvictims of crime and also deal with the day to dayissues such as neighbourhood disputes, anti socialbehaviour and dog problems for example - the aimbeing to resolve issues before they escalate. Theywill have their own neighbourhood problems to tar-get we usually work to three in each area, these willbe what the residents and business owners in theirarea have brought to their notice as being issuesthey wish to tackle . The PCs will have overall issues to tackle for theirarea - again three is the usual number. Heathfield and area current priorities are Parking,Speeding and also Shop Watch.

The aim for both the local problems and also theoverall priorities is to get the community workingtogether to resolve the problem. This can be in manyways e.g. getting yellow lines put down to help witha parking issue, having hedges cut to help visibilityat a junction, getting a speed watch team together inyour area and, of course, a good example is work-ing with the Parish Council to get CCTV coveragefor the town. If you do not already know your local PCSO, do lookat the Sussex Police Website, address as below, which has all our contact details and will show yourlocal problems, and also give the times and loca-tions your PCSO is doing a street meeting. If you areinterested in suggesting an issue you think needsdealing with please contact your local PCSO to dis-cuss.Crime and safety wise now the nights are drawing indo remember that you need to be seen at nightwhen cycling or walking especially in unlit areas souse lights and wear high visibility jackets, etc andalso use security lights in your home. We have had a few heating oil thefts recently too sois you have an oil tank consider its security -PCSO’s are always happy to come out and givesecurity advice when required. The Police Station no longer has opening times, however, we all book on at the station and work outof Heathfield - appointments can be made by callingus on the nationwide non-emergency police number101. Have a good winter.

Our autumn term got underway with the arrival of 17 new children and we expect more after Christmas. Theterm has been very busy and we have provided lots of exciting activities for the children to enjoy. At our AGMin September a new Management Committee was elected and there has been lots of brainstorming for fundrais-ing events. Our previous committee worked very hard over the year and we hope to exceed the amount thatthey raised. In October we joined with Broad Oak Primary School for our Harvest celebrations, which was enjoyed by all thechildren and the food collected was donated to the Sussex Food Bank, to be used by families in need.We will soon be planning lots of Christmas fun for the children and will be holding our Christmas Fair onSaturday 8 December. Our Baby Bops toddler group continues to run on a Friday morning in the Scout Hut next to the Village Hall andall are welcome to attend this.We continue to value every child as an individual and offer a nurturing and stimulating environment. Cross In Hand WI……..What We Do…

As the Heathfield Chamber of Commerce’s chosen charity for 2012/13, Chestnut Tree House is delighted to beinvolved in the Heathfield Christmas Fun day on Saturday 24 November. The support we have received from thelocal business for the children’s window competition is amazing and we would like to thank all the shopsinvolved, as well as all the volunteers and entertainers who will help to make it such a magical community event.Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in Sussex providing care and support for children and youngpeople aged 0 -19 with progressive life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses. We currently look after 260 children and their families from across Sussex and five of these children are from the Heathfield area. Our careincludes overnight stays in our lovely purpose-built hospice with its wonderful facilities like the hydrotherapy pool,multi-sensory room and music room. We also have a community team which provides care in the families’ ownhomes. As well as medical care, we provide practical, emotional and spiritual support for the whole family. It costs over £2.5 million to run our services and we currently receive just 8% from the government so this support really does make a huge difference to local families. We look forward to seeing you on the 24th!For further information about Chestnut Tree House please contact Louise Collins at [email protected] , call 01903 871818, or visit our website www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk

A bid to theLottery is underway.ICTAll sections of the www.heathfield.net website areconstantly being updated. We are now recordingbetween 5,500 and 6,500 hits a month which is prov-ing its value to the whole community. Please continueto send in information on local events/clubs, etc, andcheck whether your business is listed on the shopsand business directory. Inward Investment The oncoming Broadband UK (BDUK) scheme sup-ported by East Sussex County Council should now bethe solution to the challenge across the whole parishand the Partnership will be chasing this programmefor the earliest execution (hopefully in 2013). Thecommissioning work is currently held up by theEuropean Authorities concerned about UKGovernment moneys going into a commercial pro-gramme. Superfast Broadband is crucial to the busi-nesses in the area as well as local residents. We have undertaken to replace all the existing bulbson the shop fronts in Heathfield High Street, Station

Road and Station Approach with LED bulbs. Theexisting bulbs are failing to work and the new LEDbulbs will be guaranteed for 5 years. This work isbeing underwritten by the Heathfield Partnership asan investment in the regeneration of the town centre. This initiative is being supported by the HeathfieldChamber of Trade and Commerce and generouslybeing invested in by Heathfield and Waldron ParishCouncil.Police Local Action Team Matters are on an “even keel” with the CCTV provid-ing useful information to deter or detain offenders.East Sussex County Council plan to review all roadside car parking regulations and yellow line alloca-tions in Heathfield in 2013. Farmers MarketThe Market continues to be successful selling freshlocally produced meats, fish, vegetables, breads, cakes and cheeses all of the highest taste and qualityalong with arts and crafts. It makes sense to buy fromthe producer direct. The market is held every thirdSaturday in the month in The Co-op Supermarket carpark, Heathfield, between 9.00am and 12.30pm.Heathfield Works! The fourth cohort completed in September and thefifth cohort completes in December and as with theprevious cohorts, all the 16-19 year olds involved arenow successfully in full time employment, training oreducation. This is a fully mentored 10 week pro-gramme for cohorts of 10 young people who are not ineducation, employment or training to gain work place-ment experience with suitable training at the sametime. The mentors will stay in touch with those youngpeople for a further 12 months to offer any ongoingsupport needed. We have had wonderful support(both financially and with mentoring and work place-ments) from the Parish Council and the business com-munity. We are now seeking funding for the financialyear 2013-2014.

Greetings for Christmas and the New Year from the Street Pastors to the whole community! Thanks to thosewho called out to Street Pastors on a number of occasions expressing support and appreciation for all they do.This autumn has seen some changes for Heathfield Street Pastors:• farewell and thank you was said to their first Chairman Revd Guy Partridge as he leaves Welcome BaptistChurch; • welcome to their new Chairman Revd David Guest minister of All Saints, Heathfield; • a new trial schedule started for the Autumn and Winter months - Street Pastors will go out afternoons afterschool on 2nd & 4th Friday of each month; meeting young people on their way from college; parents and carers with children; youngsters out to play and others out at that time. •other Fridays Street Pastors will go out in the evenings as usual.

During the summer Street Pastors were invited to join other volunteers patrolling London streets and railwaystations during the Olympics and Paralympics – listening, caring and helping the many visitors from home andabroad. Three from Heathfield were involved; two at the Olympics and another at the Paralympics. They had agood, but challenging time and were on duty long hours. It was quite exhausting but well worth the effort – aonce in a lifetime experience! We want to thank two members of the local police team who attended our 4th anniversary celebration and com-missioning of a new Street Pastor. One PCSO gave an excellent impromptu speech, which was very support-ive of the Street Pastors. Over the last 4 years Street Pastor initiatives have begun in 13 Sussex towns;Crowborough and Billingshurst are the latest on the list. We pray that Street Pastors will start in more of ourtowns. This has been a special year for Street Pastors nationally as they expand their work with a campaign ‘Raise aMillion to Help a Million.’ To find out more about Street Pastors please look at their website - www.streetpas-tors.org.uk Ruth Waller - Heathfield Street Pastor [email protected] or 07936566396.

Wealden Business Expo 2012 was a huge success! Once again we sold out of stands well in advance and had

a very broad range of products and services. This year the range was even wider than last year and included

Santander Bank, Eckington HR, colourful bags and silver jewellery. This year there were two exciting new addi-

tions which were goodie bags for the first 200 visitors and a programme of general interest seminars which ran

through the day. Visitor numbers were also monitored this year and were up by on last year. We were also able

to provide stands for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice – the Heathfield Chamber charity of the year,

Heathfield Works! and Heathfield Community College. During the event Chestnut Tree held a raffle and prizes

were kindly supplied by the exhibitors.

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported this important event in the Heathfield Chamber’s pro-

We had a very busy summer term! To celebrate the

Queen's Diamond Jubilee, we held a themed raffle,

made crowns and had a tea party. The children also

made a card to send to the Queen and we received a

letter from her.

Our Summer Fair raised in the region of £300 for our

Pre-School. We opened on a Saturday morning to

celebrate Father’s Day; the children came to Pre-

School with Daddy or Granddad. We had a visit from

the RNLI, teaching the children how to stay safe

around the water especially during the summer.

For our annual summer outing we visited Blackstock

Farm. Leading up to the Olympics we held our own

Olympic Sports Day. This was a great morning and all

the children were presented with medals and trophies.

For those children leaving to go to school we held a

special assembly. They sang their favourite songs to

their parents and were presented with a scrapbook of

their work.

We now have regular visits from Rowena and Davy

Driver aboard the Rhythm Express. This allows the

children to have fun with musical instruments, action

songs and nursery rhymes.

The children visited Heffle Court and enjoyed looking

around Willow Farm before singing to the residents.

We also donated a harvest hamper to the home com-

prising of donations from the children.

Join us at our Christmas Fair on Saturday 17

November, 2.00-4.00pm, St Richards Hall.

We currently have places available for 2-5 year olds.

One of the delights of the SussexWildlife Trust’s Selwyns WoodNature Reserve is that within its28 acres are a number of ecolog-ically distinct habitats; old cop-piced sweet chestnuts; youngmixed native woodland, a smallarea of mature woodland and atypical Sussex ghyll stream withits deep banks providing areas oflight and shade. However, per-haps the most unexpected is asmall area of heathland seen atits best in late summer/earlyautumn when the heather is inbloom and its purple carpet dot-ted with the rich yellow of gorsebushes. Whilst the area is

nature’s work, keeping it freefrom the intrusion of bracken andbirch saplings is very muchman’s – so every June/July theSussex Wildlife Trust volunteersmanually remove the intruders! The heathland area is home tothe reserve’s reptiles. On asunny day Slow Worms (Anguisfragilis) - a legless lizard not asnake - and Grass snakes(Natrix natrix) can sometimes beseen basking in flattened areasof the heather or keeping warmunder the corrugated tin sheetsthat have been strategicallyplaced in the heather. TheCommon Lizard (Lacerta agilis)

may also be seen scuttlingacross the path and whilst notfrequently seen the presence ofthe Adder (Vipera berus) hasbeen confirmed by finding its dis-carded skin. So, when you nextwalk through this area think ofthe special habitat that it pro-vides.

Heathfield FIRST Heathfield & District Chamber of Trade & Commerce

We have had another successful year and friendships between our two communities are now firmly estab-lished. At the end of June we paid our annual visit to Forges-les-Eaux and had a lovely weekend, visitingRouen, having a tour of the ‘colombiers’ (dovecotes) and a visit to a garden. The return visit of the groupfrom Forges took place in September; we had a very agreeable visit to Merriments Garden, Rye and enjoyedas presentation, in French, on the history of the town before lunch. As always these visits took place in avery friendly atmosphere and cemented the success of the link with our neighbours across the channel.Apart from these visits we were, as usual, involved in Le Marché and entertained small group from Forgesfor the weekend. At the beginning of June Heathfield Choral Society were invited to participate in a choir fes-tival involving singers from the whole area. While not directly organised by the Twinning Association it onlytook place because of the introductions made by us so I think that we can take the credit for another suc-cessful link. Finally, it is worth recording that we continue with occasional Soirées Françaises which offer anopportunity for people to speak French, at whatever level, in a friendly group, lubricated by refreshments.

The leaves are turning brown, as they tumble down,Seems as if autumn is here, with its colours so sincere, Some swallows fly away, until another day,Don’t worry they will soon be back to sit upon your chimney stack. This is the time of year to have a bonfire as well as celebrating 5 November - Guy Fawkes night.Carry on clearing up the leaves, tidying the garden and any other jobs like cleaning your tools (wipe with oilbefore putting away) and also if you have finished your mowing get the mower serviced for next year.Easter cactus, Rhipsalidopsis, comes from central and south America. It is a plant that often looks at its bestin a hanging basket. When in flower it is essential to ensure that the soil does not dry out, if this happens thereis a chance that the buds will fall off or the flowers shrivel.Vriesia Splendens is a beautiful and spectacular bromeliad, often known as "flaming sword". It bears largestrap-like leaves, banded brown and soft green. From the base of the plant emerges a flower spike, toppedwith a bright scarlet, spear-shaped bract. This also originates from central and south America which is easyto keep using normal compost and water in its centre.Thank you for reading my hints for the garden.

The budget will be finalisedat the full Council meeting inDecember. In the last two years, the costs of running the HeathfieldCommunity Centre have risen, with our contribution to the PrimaryCare Trust - who are owners of the

It was a Monday morning. How could it be POURINGwith rain? There was so much that needed to bedone! When my gardener came, he said “it’s not fit togarden – do you need to go to a garden centre or dosome shopping?” I felt like a small child about tohave a tantrum – NO, I did not want to do either – Iwanted to go into the garden – I know it was not fit andI should do more harm than good if I tried to dig – doyou know the feeling – “it was not fair”. My gardenerand I parted amicably – I did not blame him for the rainwhich went on for hours.I saw the 6.00pm news and I felt ashamed of myself.I had been inconvenienced by the rain but people inthe North had had their houses invaded by great

floods which flowed through their rooms, soaked car-pets, beds and furniture; some of them for the secondtime. I truly held my head in shame for me and sor-row for them.I have to confess I am not looking forward to theAutumn and Winter. My trees are already losing theirleaves, it gets dark earlier every evening and it is cold-er. I am doing my best to be up-beat – I saw a robinin the garden with a breast so bright it lit up the view– I must hope for lots of robins.Best wishes to everyone struggling to get the gardenready for winter! May you all have cheering robins!!!

When It Rains

Girls only: Rainbows – 5-7, Brownies – 7-10, Guides – 10-14, Senior Section – 14+Before the summer break our County held a “Diamond Games” event at Sheffield Park for all the sections ofgirlguiding to celebrate both the diamond jubilee and the Olympics. All the rainbows, brownies, guides and sen-ior section are now busy with their Christmas term programme. We had a talk from the Air Ambulance which was very informative and was arranged by the Heathfield TrefoilGuild primarily to help raise some funds for them. We also had a District campfire evening which included allthe girls at our Division campsite in Chiddingly. This was to help raise funds to pay for the insurance neededfor some equipment and was arranged by one of our young guide leaders who is working towards her QueensGuide Award which takes a lot of work and planning. There was a Division (this includes the Districts ofHeathfield, Hailsham and Uckfield) celebration event in October too which gave us exclusive use of theHailsham Pavilion for a film showing. The Rainbows are celebrating their 25th birthday this year and all therainbow units had a special celebration day at Blackberry Farm at the end of September. We joined with HoramScouts again this year for their Remembrance parade and service in November. Most of our units have spaces available for any girls and we are always grateful for any adult helpers, eitherregular or occasional, or if you have any skills or hobbies you would like to share with any of the girls. If so,please give the District Commissioner a call for more information – Claire Burdett 01435 813669.
