August is NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION AWARENSS MONTH (NIAM)

Excerpts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

NIAM is an annual observance held to highlight the importance of vaccination for people of all ag-

es. Communities across the country use August each year to raise awareness about the important role vac-

cines play in preventing serious, sometimes deadly, diseases across the lifespan.

Vaccines contain the same germs that cause disease, but they have been either killed or weakened to the

point that they don’t make you sick. A vaccine stimulates

your immune system to produce antibodies, exactly like it

would if you were exposed to the disease. After getting vac-

cinated, you develop immunity to that disease, without hav-

ing to get the disease first.

It is always better to prevent a disease than to treat it after

it occurs.

Check with your local Military Treatment Facility (MTF) to

see if they are conducting school physicals.

Visit the CDC’s website at https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/

index.html.

Did You Know? Autism Care Demonstration Information taken from DHA presentation at Autism Resource Clinic (July 12, 2018). The TRICARE Comprehensive Autism Care Demonstration (Autism Care Demo) covers applied be-havior analysis (ABA) services for all eligible TRICARE beneficiaries diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The demonstration began Jul. 25, 2014, and will continue through Dec. 31, 2023. Getting care through the demo is a 3-step process: 1. Get Diagnosed 2. Get a Referral and Authorization 3. Schedule an Appointment For active duty service members to qualify for the Autism Care Demo, you must enroll in the Excep-tional Family Member Program (EFMP) and register in the Extended Care Health Option (ECHO). You only pay the ECHO monthly fee for ECHO services other than ABA services. ABA is the application of principles of learning and behavior to bring meaningful changes. Every 6 months, your ABA provider should provide you with a reassessment evaluation (outcome measure) and treatment plan update. Every 2 years, they should provide you with a periodic ABA program re-view (including outcome measure) and a new referral and authorization from the diagnosing/referring provider. Accessing Care: 1) Ensure your child has a diagnosis of ASD and a referral to the ACD. 2) Obtain an authorization letter for ACD from Humana. 3) Review the regional contractor letter and make an ap-pointment with the provider listed on the authorization letter. 4) Contact Humana directly if your child cannot get an appointment with the provider listed on the letter within the 28 day access standard. Contact information: Humana Military (East Region) Main line - 1-800-444-5445; ABA Customer Ser-vice - 1-866-323-7155; Autism Center of Excellence (humanamilitary.com/autism-coe) If you are having trouble getting connected to Humana or they are not providing you with assis-tance, email TRICARE at [email protected]. Humana is contractually required to provide you with services for your family member.

EFMP FAQ: Family member will not complete paperwork to update EFMP enrollment. Q: My spouse will not complete the paperwork to update our EFMP enrollment and we are out-of-date. What can I do? A: According to HQMC EFMP, if your family member over the age of 18 chooses not to complete the paper-work, you will continue to be out of compliance with MCO 1754.4B. What that means for PCSing is that it may delay orders. HQMC EFMP will ask you for your update before processing your orders. You will also continue to be out-of-date when Commander’s Reports are sent to your Commanding Officer or EFMP Representative. EFMP’s mission is to ensure there are services for your family member wherever the Marine Corps wants to send you. Updated paperwork assists us with this mission.
