Putting up actual walls or tall visual barriers isn’t the solution either,unless you have a very large narrow room. The challenge is to createcomfort, ease and intimacy without blocking views, natural light andeasy movement. We all want cozy…

Decorating a long, narrow family room can pose a design dilemma, butwith a clever layout, even the most challenging room can become afamily’s sanctuary. A long, narrow room benefits from a simple designthat appeals to aesthetic without sacrificing function. With a little effortand ingenuity, anyone can create a comfortable family room in a long,narrow space.

Need help so you can visualize the space? Things you’ll need is scalepaper, furniture, and décor.. You also need to determine how you will usethe room: for reading? for watching tv?

• Draw a scale layout of the room. Place the furniture that needs to gointo the room inside the layout. Play with the arrangement until youare satisfied. Be wary of clustering your furniture together. Give roomto walk around without bumping into furniture..

• Find the focal point of the room on your layout. This may be a fire-place, view, large window or the TV. If your family room doesn’t havea focal point, create your own. A small coffee table and rug in front ofthe sofa is the easiest way to create a main focal point. Try creative so-lutions, like a flat-screen TV or a painting on the most prominent wall.

• Create “zones” on your layout. If your family room is especially long,you might consider creating “zones.” This means sectioning off por-tions of the room for different functions. It is easy to do this with a talltable or sofas. Accenting each “zone” with similar colors can bringunity back to the room after the “zones” are set.

• Paint the walls. In a long, narrow room, all the walls should be paintedthe same color. Lighter colors such as creams, yellows and light greenswill give the illusion of a larger room. Be aware that darker colors willmake the room appear smaller.

• Arrange furniture according to your layout. Make minor adjustmentsalong the way. Start by arranging at your focal point.

• Accessorize the room. Find an accent color that can be used through-out the room, but don’t oversaturate. Accent colors work well in throwpillows, vases, candles, wall hangings, flowers and picture frames.

Designing and decorating a narrow room can be challenging. Preplan-ning where you want each piece of furniture and other items in the roommay be helpful. Make the proportions of the room correct so it doesn'tappear lopsided with all the furniture on one side. With planning andfinding furniture to work in the space you have, you can make eachnarrow room pleasant and efficient.

Narrow Living/Family Rooms

• Evaluate what your needs are for the room, like if the central use for theroom is watching television or just a sitting room. Mydeco.comrecommends dividing a narrow living room into different zones orsections. They suggest making one focal point the center of attention,like a fireplace, large wall hanging or the television.

• Have the furniture centered on the focal point. At one end of thenarrow room, you can have a zone for a small office area with a com-puter desk and chair, and built in bookshelves on the far wall to makeuse of wall space.At the other end of the room, have a sitting area witha few comfortable chairs or use it for a small dining area, if needed.

• Dividing each zone of your room can be done with either furniture orcolors and décor. Divide the central TV area with sectional L or Ushaped furniture facing the viewing area and add a coffee table or arearug in the center of it. The zone for the home office can have a desk orbookshelves as a divider from the TV area. You can also change thepaint or wallpaper from one area to the other and add small halfcolumns to divide the TV area from the dining or other part of the room.

Narrow Kitchens/Dining Rooms

• Narrow, long kitchens are sometimes called galley kitchens and usuallyhave all the cabinets and appliances on one side. An idea found ondesignboom.com is to fan out the countertops on the open room end ofthe kitchen to offer a small snack bar or sitting area if the kitchen iswide enough to allow this. Interior-design-it-yourself.com suggests ina galley kitchen to have the sink in the middle of the counter space withwork areas on either side of it.

• For narrow dining areas, make use of the wall space, if possible. Thecorner bench dining nooks can take up less space but still provideadequate seating for all. Another option is to find a long narrow tablewith removable sections or leafs and keep it close to the wall with fewersections until you need full capacity of the table.

Narrow Bedrooms

• Your bed is the one thing you do not want to compromise on when itcomes to a narrow bedroom. If you require a king size bed, find onewith a smaller frame or no headboard to make it fit. Using narrowbedside tables or wall mounted shelves next to the bed and a tall floorlamp to save space. Also, place dressers, desks or other furniture thatis too big for the room in hallways or other rooms or eliminate them andonly use closet space if necessary. Use light colors and mirrors or brightdécor to give a more open atmosphere.

Tips &Warnings

• Before you build your home, take a close look at where your focal pointwill be in each room.

• Define each space before you build: is the dining room too narrow foryour 8 chair setting? Remember that you have to walk around the tablewith people sitting comfortably in their chairs. They also have to beable to comfortable get up from their sitting position at the end of ameal without bumping into the buffet and hutch.

• Don’t place the fireplace opposite a window, and neither oppositewhere the television entertainment centre will be.

• Furniture that doubles as storage units is a great way to conserve spaceand keep your family room organized.
