Spring is the ideal season to make a few im-provements to protect your home & cottage.Here are a few preventative tips that couldsave you from future costly repairs & sometips to get energized to tackle the job at hand..1. Check the caulking. Inspect the exterior ofyour windows for cracked caulking. If it hasaged, it's time to remove the old caulking with ahammer and chisel and apply new caulking inorder to prevent water from penetrating anddamaging your interior wall.2. Evaluate your eavestroughs. Spring showersmay bring flowers, but heavy flow and debriscan take a toll on your eavestroughs. Make surethe eavestroughing, down spouts and floor drainsare clear to ensure proper water flow.3.Direct your drainage.Water, especially duringthe early spring, is susceptible to freezing andthawing that can damage your home. Create agradual slope, using dirt, to help water run awayfrom your home.4. Inspect your insulation. If you noticed icicleshanging from your house during the winter, orthat snow quickly melted from your roof, itcould indicate insufficient insulation in yourattic. Add insulation now, before the summerarrives, when the attic will feel like an oven.

5. Roots can ruin. Shrubs and trees can add curbappeal to your home, but they could be too closefor comfort. Deep-rooted shrubs and trees candamage your foundation wall if not kept incheck. Once the frost is out of the ground, takethe opportunity to transplant greenery to a more"foundation friendly" location.Have a cottage? Consider saving the equivalentof your land taxes to dedicate to regular mainte-nance at the cottage, and look for bargains atyour local Habitat for Humanity or other secondhand sources for materials. - Making yourcottage available for rent for a few weeks in thesummer can also provide some funds to puttowards regular maintenance and improvements.Is your Front Entrance Cluttered? Your frontentrance is the way your house gets its energynourishment. In Feng Shui, the front door iscalled the mouth of Chi, or energy. Upon theentrance to every space your energy is lookingfor grounding and focus, so do treat your sensesrespectfully and provide for a visual relief.Spring gives you an opportunity to clean up &refresh this space..• Let go of any objects in your main door areathat are not really needed there, such as therecycle bins in full view, heavy coats, tornsweaters, worn-out boots, outdated shoes, etc.

• Find a way to deal with all the incoming mailso that it does not take over the space. A smalldrawer in the closet may be a solution if thespace is limited in the entryway area.• Keep only the in-season items in your mainentry closet.• Bring a sense of beauty to your main entry, asin Feng Shui the state of your main entrydetermines the quality of Chi, or energy, thatlater circulates throughout your house.

Her friends know her as the accessory lady: she loves jewellery, shoes, hats,purses and scarves!• In the 60s & 70s, Liz did posters for elementary school dances (before she was allowedto attend them) also for winter carnivals & special events (the computer has since takenover the “graphics” side of things). She organized the dance hall & did the table set-up.• Later on, her friends liked the way she organized and displayed her accessories at homeand thereby requested her help in using what they already had in their homes. Theylooked to her for help to de-clutter & to organize their space, as well as help themorganize & accessorize their wardrobe. Then came the referrals..• Liz prepared houses for the real estate market before “staging” became a word andwas promoted on these much watched TV decorating programs.• In the mid-1980s, she had illustrations & logos for many others but had neitherbusiness name nor any business cards to hand out. In 1985, this designing mind cameup with a design in mind for herself; henceher company name Design’in-Mind• Liz has lived & operated her home-business in Vancouver, in Ottawa, and inBrockville since she moved here with herhusband in 1994.• Liz is a member of the BrockvilleNewcomers Club; the Brockville Womenin Business; and is a volunteer at the Rose Garden Family Support Centre.• She has written 4 historical booklets including a pre-Loyalist history of the Brockvillearea: In the Garden of the Great Spirit.• Liz offers an alternative choice in decorating: she uses what people have in their home.Her business motto is to offer clients “Maximum Impact with Minimal Investment”• Her business card depicts her free-hand illustration: a stylish lady holding a paintbrushwho’s “brain waves” are clearly reflected in her sunglasses, ready with a design in mind.
