With a large variety of rug styles, shapes andsizes available, finding the right one for yourbedroom might seem intimidating at first. Hereare some ideas to help you narrow down yourchoices.1. Location: The first step to figuring out whichsize of area rug to buy is deciding where youwant to put it, in other words, how you want tobreak up the space in your bedroom. For smallbedrooms where not much else fits aside from abed, a large rug for the area beneath and aroundthe bed looks best. For larger bedrooms wherethere is space for a seating area, desk or vanitytable, area rugs can define those spaces nicely.For example, place a large round rug underneathtwo stuffed armchairs with a reading lamp andtable placed between them or place a square rugunderneath your desk and chair. You can eitherplace a large rug under the bed area or you canplace small rugs of any shape at the foot or sidesof the bed.2. Size: Once you've decided where you willplace the area rug, measure the length and widthof the space and write it down. If you decide toget a rug for the space beneath and around yourbed, measure not only the size of the bed but anyadditional length and width you need to extendaround the bed. For example, if you have night-stands or other furniture at the sides of the bed,you might want a rug that is big enough to cover

the entire area of the bed and nightstands plusenough to border the foot of the bed.3. Colour and pattern: Now that you know whatsize and shape of bedroom rug you're lookingfor, choosing the perfect area rug is just a matterof personal taste and style. Take a look at thecolours and styles your room already has. Arethere a lot of solid colours or neutrals? If so, a rugwith a pattern or a little bit more colour will addjust the right amount of interest. If your bedroomalready has a lot of colour and busy patterns, asolid colour bedroom rug or a simple pattern willlook better. If you're redecorating your entirebedroom, let a new area rug be the inspiration foryour design. Working from the ground up, youcan handpick your wall colour, sheets, duvetcover and all the decorative accessories to matchthe colours and pattern in the rug for a designer-coordinated look.4. Price and quality: The most inexpensive arearugs are machine-made using cotton or syntheticmaterials, while the most expensive rugs arehandmade using the finest quality natural materi-als, like wool and silk. Before you choose yourmaterials, consider the location. A hand-wovensilk rug is not the best choice for a high-trafficarea, but it may look wonderful as a wall hang-ing. If the rug will be the centrepiece of your bed-room, you may want to spend a little more forhigher quality materials.
