EDITOR’S LETTER

In a country where there are over roughly 32,000 inhabited apartments in an occupied dwelling population of approximately 128,000, unsurprisingly there are some truly exquisite ones. It’s not easy to deliberate between the various apartments that we come across and

since very often apartment living goes hand in hand with low maintenance living, there are a lot of minimalist apartments out there. But that’s not what we looked for this time. This issue, we have featured three highly individualistic apartments, each one entirely diverse from the next. The idea is that you can truly get a sense of the individual living in these spaces through their distinct styles. We don’t get into articles about how to live in an apartment – after all, the concept has been around for a while (the multi-story insulae in ancient Rome are testament), but we do hope that by exploring the ones featured you’ll get ideas for your own space. Since it’s the first issue of the year, we bring you an in-depth glimpse of 2011 interior trends, which in some cases will be the start to identifying what you’re about to see lots of. The new aspect of HOMEWORKS that begins now is its size. We figured that we’d start as we mean to go on this year and make the biggest environmental contribution that we can by saving on the quantity of paper that we use to produce the magazine. We hope that you’ll like the new size and find it convenient to take along with you when you go in search for that amazing something you saw in it.

DAVID CARUANA IS THE WINNER Of THE CLEAR VASE, COURTESY Of GARDEN-IT

DAVID CARUANA:

“If they can do it, everybody can. This is what I say to myself every time I see plants and trees decorating our facades. I say this when I greet the women’s tongue plants in an alley, or a two-storey bougainvillea towering over a town house. The same goes for when I discover an ivy vine shooting up or notice a ficus in a balcony belonging to a block of flats.

I would love to see as many photos of this local amazon as possible in hOMEwORkS, so that more and more people do it. I think it could help to boost the morale of the nation, as well as instil some national pride.”

MARVIC fARRUGIA CARUANA

“I really use hOMEwORkS as a reference to buy from shops and showrooms that advertise in the magazine. I’m a very busy woman and don’t have enough time to go and check every showroom in Malta, so for me it’s really helpful, as I don’t have to worry about where I can find things to buy for my home. I would like to get some ideas on how to turn a small bathroom into a small spa, as it’s the best way to relax after a busy day.”

JONATHAN CASSAR

“Thank you for the really informative hOMEwORkS magazine. My suggestion is to include more articles on the routine maintenance of the home. In particular, I would be interested in reading about how to cope with wall humidity problems and what the best available options are.”

COOL SUMMERS, DRY WINTERS berger, the paint manufacturer, has developed coolRoofs, an acrylic based paint for roofs, which not only takes on the characteristics of its bestselling roof compound (it’s long lasting and water repellent), but it keeps the actual surface of the roof cool, which also has a positive impact on the temperature inside the coated building during the summer months. coolRoofs needs no specialist application – a roller or brush will do – and just two coats can have a knock-on effect on the use of air conditioning units and fans, and can reduce air-conditioning costs by 50%. Find it in leading hardware and paint stores. www.berger.com.mt

this issue’s featured homes theme is “amazing apartments”. each unique in their own way, together they illustrate how the same type of home can be so individual, according to each homeowner’s character and lifestyle. We start with the classical portomaso apartment by architects Kurt camilleri Burlo’ and trinity Fava. the space highlights how a modern backdrop can be worked to a somewhat classical owner’s taste without appearing traditional. the use of earthy and neutral materials creates a timeless backdrop (page 026). Homeowner Kevin Decesare does it again with architectural Designer carlo Schembri and interior Designer Stefania Schembri – a modern but quirky seafront apartment with future classic design furniture (page 036). Home to a family of four, interior Designer Michele O’reilly brings vibrance and convenience to a modern Sliema apartment (page 046).

he homeowners of this impressive portomaso apartment are the archetypal living-the-dream ex pats: they wanted the

stunning Mediterranean marina view, the wide-open plan space and the convenience of easy-maintenance living. Essentially, they wanted to create a luxurious home with classically contemporary elements of design aimed to endure the test of time.

architect kurt camilleri burlo’ and Trinity Fava met with brief with more – he wanted to create a place that looks as if someone actually lives in it: “the opposite of that tense architectural style, which is the design equivalent of uniform”.

kurt and Trinity did not work alone; the owners were deeply involved in the designs and their vision was realised together. The resulting space makes an instantaneous impression through its unanticipated sense of height, space and light. Earthy, rich materials result in a classical backdrop with substance. The extensive use of walnut wood, natural marble and classic stone give the space an organic feel, while the kitchen and dining side of the open plan living area is clean-lined, white and light but the soft grey of the cabinetry tones down its minimal look.

The original layout didn’t work - the main bedroom was too large and out of proportion while the secondary bedrooms were too small to cater to the owners’ children’s needs.

all of the internal walls of the apartment were demolished and new walls were built to shape the new layout, which integrates an en suite in every bedroom, the introduction of a walk-in wardrobe in the main bedroom, a laundry, guest toilet and a study. The kitchen (one of the rooms they use the most) was shifted to the front to enjoy the views.

among the assortment of subtle and classic more often than not custom-made furniture, prototypes of kurt’s bespoke work and attention to detail is more than evident; the extensive walnut clad wall coverings (inclusive of mirrored recesses with lights at the top to make objects d’art oh, so shine!), the creation of different zones through the suspended ceilings, the insightful lighting design and the confidently roomy master en suite bathroom. what’s more is that the ceilings were carefully designed to hide the services and conceal all grilles.

Trinity’s choice of a well-balanced neutral colour palette originated from the owners’ preference for a clean, timeless feel. unobtrusive storage space has been well planned, hidden within the walnut cladding, as well as in the intentionally designed bespoke wardrobes – not that there is a lack of space in this extremely large apartment.

when moving around within the space, the homeowners seemingly glide amongst the shiny marble floors. There is a harmony to the apartment and as a result, a quiet stillness amongst those who visit it. Even though the project has just been completed, the owners seem completely at ease in their new space, which is precisely a large part of living the dream.

his time, kevin’s apartment is not so much about the gadgets as it is

about warm, truly comfortable and fun living – from the effortlessly chic enormous indigo flower print on the open-plan dining room wall to the totally plush decked bathrooms and sauna.

as kevin likes his legroom liberty, it was a must for him to have an apartment with ample breathing space: “I use every room of the apartment, which is how I like living.”

carlo Schembri came in again to take care of the architectural design, while designer Stefania Schembri created a comfortable Italian style feel, with furniture pieces from exceptional design houses, such as Minotti and b&b Italia. kevin played a key role in working with the designers to choose the right pieces.

“ThereareelementsthatImusthave.Ineedspaceandviews”“I don’t go for heavy furniture; I prefer a modern, minimalist style. Light fittings are also really important – I think the right ones make a big difference to the place.”

carlo: “The concept of the design was inspired around creating a place that offers comfort and grace. Despite its size and open-plan layout, it also includes separate areas for privacy. Furniture placement is key in my eyes – doing this well allows for dynamic design.”

The bedrooms are the biggest comfort feature of the apartment. Two of the three bathrooms are en suite, both luxuriously decked out in wood. Often overlooked for use in bathrooms, the material is ideal, as it’s warm and organic, creating a relaxing look and feel – which is definitely desirable in the bathroom.

The large terrace, which was enlarged to over five times its original size, is one of the most attractive features of the apartment. an inconspicuous glass railing means that the spectacular view is completely unobstructed, while white and round deck furniture set against the blue of the sea and sky emphasizes a cool Mediterranean feel.

The thing about kevin is that while he will take guidance and advice from a designer, he still wants his space to be his own.

“There are elements that I must have. I need space and views. The terrace is a big part of why I like the space so much. I really enjoy sitting outside on the terrace to experience the expansive view, especially when the sea is rough. I also enjoy barbecuing with friends – it’s important for me to be able to entertain comfortably. I also like being able to walk from the interior to the terrace without a split-level so that the transition of indoor to outdoor is seamless. The best part of the space though, is that wherever you are in the apartment, you can see the sea.”

he owners of this seafront Sliema apartment wanted the luxury of

having a manageable apartment size that they could balance with their busy lives without spending their free time maintaining it. They wanted to have everything within easy reach where all has its place. They wanted things to be comfortable not only for themselves, but

also for the two children that also call this apartment home. In addition, they wanted to be able to entertain friends comfortably.

The property had a good start with its large rooms and wide hall, as well as its height and three-sided exposure, which allows plentiful light to stream in through the windows.

with the help of Interior Designer Michele O’Reilly, the couple hit the ground running with the six month project, starting from a vacant property, which needed to be entirely gutted out, inclusive of dropping walls and inserting beams to allow for an open plan.

When the homeowners are entertaining, the custom-built sliding partition emerges from the wall to hide the tidying-in-progress kitchen

The living room furniture is low and minimalist, but still provides plenty of storage space to hide away the (must-have for a family with a child and a teen) comprehensive audio, games consoles and television surround sound system that extends throughout the house, including the en suite to the main bedroom. all the furniture here is custom designed and built by a master carpenter who spares no effort to achieve perfection.

The dining room space is open plan with the kitchen, but when guests arrive for dinner and the kitchen tidying is still a

work-in-progress, a custom-made sliding partition (brain-child of the owner) emerges seemingly from nowhere and hides the clutter with a striking Japanese-style bamboo wall.

working towards the rear of the home, one of the most unique features of the apartment is the aquarium built into the wall of the wet room in the bathroom facing onto the hall. This is a two-way aquarium with all its machinery snugly housed in the false wall between shower and hallway.

a minimalist lifestyle is scarcely plausible when two young children share the house. yet in this case it works because each child has plenty of space in their bedrooms to store, disgorge, use, mess around then store back their toys, schoolbooks and clothes. both children have bedrooms that reflect their personal passions with Disney and pink for the nine-year old girl and the personalised, Liverpool F.c. for the just-teen boy.

after this brief transformation, the finishes began to fall into place. The front room became a combined L-shape living, dining and kitchen with two large windows looking onto two small terraces.

The master bedroom was a very large room before the refurbishment but is now the smallest bedroom in the house. To compensate, the rest of the former room has been converted into an en suite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. both anterooms have sliding doors upholstered in black velvet that disappear into the partition rather than take up space in the rooms. when the doors are closed they give the appearance of a padded wall and there is no indication of what lies behind.

“we are aware that this apartment does not enjoy the luxury of storage space that we had in our previous house so we operate on a strict ‘one in, one out’ rule when purchasing something new. we maintain a happy equilibrium this way and it helps keep it clutter-free.”

The owners sum up the feeling of living in the apartment: “This is our dream home. we feel that we made the absolute best use of the space and ambiance of the property, achieved through the ideas, effort and mutual understanding of a team that consisted of our highly creative designer Michele O’Reilly and our architect Malcolm Xuereb, master carpenter Joe at Trends and our brilliant plumber/electrician Ivan Mallia. There is nothing we would have done differently.

“Living here is nothing short of exquisite luxury. The apartment size is manageable and everything is within easy reach – there are no steps in the way and everything has its proper place. we wake to a soft light coming in from our west facing window, start with a cappuccino on the terrace and breakfast together in the dining/kitchen area. The apartment is so luxurious, so tailored to our tastes that we often choose to take short weekend breaks at home, rather than going away to a hotel!”

austere beauties: The elegant ambiance is defined by clear and unostentatious aesthetics. and yet despite their severity, the forms and lines are anything but cold. Instead, they betray the passion of their makers and owners for details and quality. In their search for the essence of things, the designers encounter classic and established forms that are equipped with new functions and produced with high-tech. This playful mixing with new technologies and the piecing together of old and new details are symptomatic of a desire to dismantle and re-arrange that finds particularly strong expression in this trend: The cards are being reshuffled. with filigree forms and soft colours, these austere beauties appeal to both our heads and our hearts. They are joined by pretty but modest basic forms with boxy or rounded contours. The colours and materials are dominated by nature: wood, leather, felt and plant fibres are complemented by technical fabrics; an earthy olive hue dominates over lush and pale shades of green and is joined by powder shades from rose to brown.

Shedding ballast: who says the future isn’t sensual? new forms and new materials are teaching us a new way of seeing things. what looks light turns out to be heavy and resilient, what seems heavy and solid captivates us with its lightness. This applies to both forms and materials. volumes appear airy or are reduced to their outline, while honeycombed and woven structures add depth to two-dimensional surfaces.Light and flowing materials form a contrast with their cold and heavy counterparts. On the whole, aesthetics are defined by angular and folded structures. The dominant colour is a cold grey, accompanied by ash grey and black and brightened up with vibrant dashes of citrus yellow and mandarin orange. a light taupe mediates between grey and white and adds a little softness to the colour scale.

3 RE-BALANCINGReconfiguringtheworld

Furniture that thinks outside the box: perhaps surprisingly, it is the generally so tranquil world of harmony-seeking family-minded consumers that the box is becoming the epitome of universal furniture, a symbol of the search for personal, meaningful pieces populated by truly practical things - icons of everyday life. what doesn’t fit is made to fit, and wherever people are content with their own company, the furniture ought to be unpretentious too.

Even angular and simple individual structures can be fashioned into rounded and astonishingly comfortable opportunities for retreat - soft padding or sheepskins emanate a sense of luxury. The preference is for natural materials. The surface textures are knitted or woven, occasionally even hand-spun. a warm rhubarb-red radiates positive energy and warmth is combined with creamy-white, corn yellow and tan shades ranging from light brown all the way to terracotta.

4 TRANSFORMING PERSPECTIVESSimpleformsforcomplexthings

Material as an experiment: as in performance art, this interior trend (unlike “emotional austerity”) is not so much interested in a long-term relationship as it is in a snapshot, in a response to the nature cult, the hype surrounding cult objects or “green design”. The protagonists try to convey their newly gained insights with the aid of archaic forms, simple solutions and it-products taken to cliche-like extremes.a great deal of importance is attached to material finishes, to polished or matt surfaces. The experimental workshop of “Transforming perspectives” prefers to work with foamed metals, composite mineral materials, glass and metal fabrics. a dark plum-blue provides the dominant background for both an artificial lavender shade and a dove-grey with a violet shimmer. Important features are emphasized in a caramel shade with a metallic-brown gleam.

ven for those who never seem to have enough hours in a day, or are just plain lazy, a

lovely outdoor oasis need not be such an unattainable pleasure. because ultimately that’s what a garden should be: a source of pleasure and relaxation and not a burden for those who are less than passionate gardeners. In what measure then can idleness be compatible with a love for plants?

The first and most important step is accurate planning. Lack of time to dedicate to gardening chores does not justify a bland or insipid outdoor area, and a smart and well thought-out layout will create a pleasant balance between hard and soft landscaping. yes the planting

area can be reduced, but always in a way that will complement permanent fixtures like decks, paving, pergolas and pebbled areas. Special attention can be given to decorative elements, such as sculptures, trellises, water features, benches and effective lighting, which will create an atmosphere without increasing labour.

Many modern time-saving devices and products will also come to the rescue: automatic drip irrigation systems, slow-release fertilisers, weed mats and geotextiles can all contribute to a much easier gardening life.

The choice of planting is of course crucial. It is pointless going for unusual exotics, which will require extra care and attention,

as well as unnecessarily high amounts of water. preference should be given to hardy Mediterranean natives, which are mostly evergreen, have attractive colour, texture and shape and provide year-round interest. when well adapted, these plants, as well as being drought tolerant, need no pesticides or feeding. In fact, any extra fertiliser could just result in excessive growth, meaning more work. If in need, a slow release fertiliser applied in spring 6 to 8 weeks before the flowering phase is sufficient.

choose slow-growing plants and consider their height at maturity to avoid constant pruning and cutting back. architectural plants with large, bold leaves are an instant feature and don’t litter, making them suitable near pools or water features.

avoid high-maintenance lawns, hedges, roses and plants in pots; reduce the amount of perennials, which need frequent deadheading and staking, and seasonal plants.

Ornamental grasses are easy to care for, they only need cutting down once a year, and they look great planted in drifts. In fact, a good low-maintenance tip is always to

plant in sweeps of just a few species, making it much easier to keep up with their care, as well as being aesthetically pleasing and restful to the eye.

Trees, especially evergreen ones, are not labour intensive and provide shade, screening and privacy.

bare soil is the gardener’s worst enemy, making ground covers and mulch essential ingredients for the low-maintenance garden. ground covers, of which there is an infinite variety, maintain the soil’s humidity, help suppress competing weeds and look great between stepping stones or spilling over paths, paving and planters to soften harsh edges. plant them

closely to obtain maximum coverage in a short time. Mulch has a similar function: it controls weeds, retains moisture and regulates temperature fluctuations in the soil while generally improving the appearance of a planted area. The only maintenance it requires is topping up when it starts thinning. geotextile fabric and weed mat under mulch, pebbles and gravel will help to prevent weeds.

Less water, less labour, less fertilisers – in short, reduced maintenance – results in considerable savings in expenditure, making it a good idea for both enthusiastic and half-hearted gardeners.

The Ultimate Trill Chef Michel VergnaudfromChezPhilippe’sbringsHOMEWORKSadelicious

Trillrecipe,inseasonrightnow.BillHermitagefromDelicataWineryrecommendstheperfectwinetoaccompanythedishPhotography: alan carville

All About Trill Fished from 12cm up to 30-40cm in size, Trill has a fine and delicate flavour with white, textured flesh. The fish is most often pan-fried, grilled or steamed with bones that make for excellent stock.

when buying Trill it is important that they’re super fresh. It’s not a fish like dover sole or turbot that will get better after a few days in the fridge. a Trill is best eaten the same day it was caught and the body should be rigid, scales tight with clear and glossy eyes. If bought very fresh but for whatever reason, cannot be consumed immediately, it’s best to clean and fillet it and store the fillets wrapped in plastic so they don’t dry.

a very fresh Trill will have a firm, yet translucent texture, whereas a not so fresh one will be more cotton-like and mushy. The fish is a rather fat one and it’s important to cook it so that the fat under the skin is unleashed. To maximise the flavours of Trill, they simply need to be pan-fried at relatively high heat on the skinny side to release the fats and allow for crispy skin when cooking in its own fat. It’s also important not to overdo the greasing of the frying pan and not to use butter or fat to fry them in, as this will alter the true flavour of the Trill. keep in mind that cooking is rapid.

This fish is best served on its own or with simply one or two accompanying flavour components. Despite the lectin (sugar-binding proteins that are highly specific for their sugar molecules) content of tomatoes, they compliment Trill exceptionally well.

according to chef Jamie Oliver, when cooking Trill, you don’t have to stick to soft herbs like tarragon or dill – “gutsy, woody herbs like oregano, thyme or rosemary are great with fish like Trill”.

The Ultimate Trill

Did You Know? With its creamy texture similar to that of chicken, the liver of Trill is a delicacy and is usually left intact when the fish is gutted. For a quick and tasty sauce, heat a pan with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add a chopped clove of garlic, an anchovy fillet, a tablespoon of white wine and the Trill liver to the pan. Saute’ for 30 seconds, mash together and then smear over the skin of the Trill.

PAN-fRIED TRILL WITH ANCHOVY & HERB DRESSING

800g trill, filleted2 yellow endives, roughly chopped1tbsp brown sugar juice of 1 orange

DRESSIng:

50g anchovies1 large garlic clove fresh sage, chopped olive oil

MethodFirst prepare the dressing by blending all the ingredients together and adding enough olive oil to loosen the consistency. Set aside.

In a small pan, melt a little butter with the brown sugar and allow to caramelise. add the chopped endives and sauté until soft. add the orange juice and reduce slightly. Set aside.

put another pan on the fire and add some oil. allow it to get very hot. In the meantime, score the skin of the fish and coat the fillet in flour. when the pan is ready, add the fish skin side down and cook for two minutes. Turn over and cook for another minute.

Serve the fish on top of the endives and drizzle over some dressing. Serve with a freshly tossed garden salad.

WINE ACCOMPANIMENT BY BILL HERMITAGE: 2009 GRAN CAVALIER SAUVIGNON BLANC – D.O.K. MALTA SUPERIOR – MACERATION PELLICULAIRE“There are a number of unoaked dry white wines that will accompany the fine and delicately flavoured, white, textured flesh of this pan-fried Trill. The strongest flavours here by far are the fresh sage and of course the anchovies used in the dressing, so therefore our chosen white wine needs to have a little bit of weight or age and a fair degree of flavour. anything too fine and delicate will be overpowered by the dressing. I would also avoid a white wine with high acidity because of the already tart citric juice from the orange used with the endives. My first choice would be either a 2009 vintage Medina or gran cavalier Sauvignon blanc; both are easy drinking with nice soft edges, mild acidity and bags of flavour that will pair up with this dish admirably. Even a serious dry rose wine like the victoria heights Shiraz Rose from gozo would go really well when nicely chilled.”

we are in awe of the simplicity and modesty of this building. The strong concept and clear narrative drives this project – a single floor, which acts as a fluid playground of learning and experimentation.

Spread over a single fluid space of 20,000 square metres, the centre will function as a laboratory for learning and intends to act as a cultural hub for the Ecole polytechnique, open to both the students and the public.

architects kazuyo Sejima and Ryue nishizawa conceived an environment where space flows unobstructed – without apparent walls or stairs. users may settle in any of the spaces. There is a governing sense of calm. The space undulates freely, without becoming anarchic; a representation of how the architects believe our mind should work when conducting research. Such is the objective of learning without boundaries – free thought, which does not verge on the chaotic. Libraries, spaces to convene, spaces to study, restaurants, cafes and the outdoors flow in and out of each other seamlessly.

BYSANAA

From time to time, in the international field of architecture, there emerges a building that challenges preconditioned expectations. The Rolex building centre EFpL (Ecole polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland is one such building

at first glance the building seems to be a sandwich topped with a slice of undulating gruyere Swiss cheese. In fact, the school has been lovingly nicknamed The cheese building. The concept presented huge challenges in structural engineering.

The project’s main consultants were experienced bridge engineers who drew from their knowledge of the emerging technology on the subject. The study of its complex roof of dips and dunes, supported by steel columns, which are nearly invisible, resulted in completely new methods of construction.

The Tokyo architect duo has been working collaboratively under the name Sanaa since 1995. Sejima and nishizawa were joint winners of the prestigious pritzker prize in 2010. kazuyo Sejima was the director of the 2010 venice biennale, which included wim wenders’ 3D film of the Rolex Learning centre. It was followed by cloudscapes, a collaboration between architect Tetsuo kondo and engineer Transsolar, which passes visitors through an artificially generated cloud of changing temperature and humidity.

a word of praise goes to the competition judges and client who have selected far from the most economical of schemes. It is, however, certainly a scheme that produced a landmark building, in that inimitable Japanese architect knack of responding to a brief in the most unexpected manner. In its values, this building is comparable to the practicality of bologna, which based its economy on learning, unlike the flamboyant merchant towns of Florence.

“THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS LEAVES NO TRACKS IN THE SAND, NO WAVES IN THE WATER AND NO IMAGE IN A MIRROR. HE IS THE GOD OF THINGS THAT DO NOT INFLUENCE THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD BUT THE SOUL OF A PERSON”

The building’s interior is characterised by gentle slopes and terraces, which cross between the network of services seamlessly and give the building its relaxed ambience
