the use of chemical pest control supplies could cause a lot more harm than good. certain aerosol chemical sprays that are used for pest extermination have been found to cause allergic reactions among certain people, with many cases of inadvertent poisoning also being reported. we’ve put together some recipes for homemade, organic pest control sprays. let us know if you try them and they work! chilli bug spray: blend 40 fresh chilli peppers in 1 litre of water. add 5g of pure soap flakes to the blended chilli mixture. apply as required undiluted. elderflower bug spray: boil up 500g of elderflower leaves with 1 litre of water. strain, dilute it and then apply. Molasses bug spray: Mix a bit of molasses in 1 litre of water and then add soap. rhubarb bug spray: soak the poisonous leaves of rhubarb. add 1 kg of leaves to 3 litres of water for 30 minutes and then add 15g of pure soap flakes. dilute the mix, 1:1 for use.

Since this issue’s theme is reinvention, there is an element of it, in one form or another, within each of the homes featured this edition. By moving from Washington, USa, and taking nothing with them (apart from their two sons), Jerry and Kelly White have to a certain extent, reinvented their lives. From living with and amongst an abundance of things, they now live with what they need and not much more (page 026). architects spacestudio create a private villa from a former large garden. the villa is truly distinct in its comfort, architectural form and interior spaces (page 038). the chancellor of St. paul’s anglican pro-cathedral, the reverend canon Simon godfrey’s residence within St. paul’s anglican pro-cathedral is the real thing. What was once part of the church is now where Father Simon lives, able to enjoy the sea views on one side and the magnificent church features on the other (page 046).

erry and kelly white fell in love with valletta at first sight. when they started looking for

a summer residence outside the states in 2003, they were hunting for a country that combined the friendliness of dublin and the ancient ambience of Jerusalem: “hey, if these two cities had a baby, it would be valletta.”

they were looking for a place that was close to the Middle east where Jerry works, but not necessarily in that region. “besides Malta’s locality in the Mediterranean, the people just seemed so relaxed and friendly. also, the architecture and real estate were interesting and so different from the states. so we thought, perfect, we’re here. the Maltese are the irish of the Mediterranean and you can’t beat the light, water and sunshine.”

last year, the couple decided that it was time to move somewhere “away from it all” permanently. Jerry says, “My grandmother used to say, ‘live where you would like to vacation’.” and that’s when the whites got on a plane with their two sons and moved to Malta full time.

the couple knew that they couldn’t take on a massive renovation, but remodelling a couple of rooms, bathrooms and redecorating was a must. the couple had met interior designer tara Mifsud through mutual friends previously, during which time she helped them to make the home “more rentable”. when the family moved in, the couple worked with tara to “create a casual, comfortable, chic space”.

while there weren’t any structural changes made, there was a substantial amount of

renovation done with a few items that had to be worked around. the dining table, the chunky wooden bookshelves in the study and the master en suite bedroom were left undisturbed. the cherry wood kitchen was also left untouched and tara worked with it to achieve a characteristic bistro feel. the upstairs bedroom was completely renovated and the en suite bathroom was pulled out and entirely re-done.

a bedroom and bathroom were added so that the boys could each have their own space. the third floor and roof terrace entrance was made useful by incorporating son Jay’s bedroom and en suite, as well as housing the laundry area.tara Mifsud. “i thought the home should have a twist without dating. i knew modern wouldn’t work but then neither would country. it needed to be casual but with

traces of glamour, which i brought in, but with restraint (the chandeliers and wall units in the dining room, the gild mirror in the study, the chunky silver candlesticks, for instance). there are hints of it here and there, but nothing too sumptuous – it just wouldn’t suit Jerry and kelly.

“it really was quite easy working this closely with the clients – we had a system and it worked. that natuzzi leather sofa [living room] was probably one of the items that i was really keen on but kelly wasn’t sure about. i really felt that it would bring it all together and pushed for it because it was perfect for the casual chic look we were pursuing. we didn’t want to do anything super trendy. we didn’t buy on a design scheme – we bought everything piece by piece.”

kelly. “tara got to know our likes and dislikes. she gets our vibe. we’re casual and laid back – she’s this way too, so she completely understood us. it was easy.”

although the home has its individual style, it does still retain a Mediterranean feel, through its warm and soft colour scheme and of course, steady exposure to the star of the show, the view. the walls were initially yellow but kelly prefers soft colours and so they were changed to a light, eggshell blue.

once the renovating and decorating was all in place, there was then the getting down to the business of actually living there. culture shock (noun); the shock of moving to a foreign country, often consisting of distinct phases. there are no fixed symptoms ascribed to culture shock, as each person is affected differently.

kelly. “culture shock? thing is, living here, you stop being ‘special.’ you’re now part of the landscape. instead of observing, you’re now a local. i had to ask a lot of people where things were, how to do simple things like grocery shop or how to go and see a doctor. some friends literally picked me up and drove me to some places that i needed to go (which i am so grateful for). after the initial education of how things worked, it got easier.

“somehow we find that we have more time with each other here in Malta. there are fewer distractions and things pulling us in different directions. we’ve had time with each other, time with our boys, that we wouldn’t have had in the states, where the mentality is more ‘go, go, go!’ and less, ‘take time to pause, to relax…’.”

the move could have been hard on the couple’s two teenage sons but, apart from missing their sisters, kate and Quincy who stayed in the us to attend college, they seem to have made it through the transition well. “we made sure they had the ps3, because otherwise there might have been a revolt. also, now with facebook, it’s so easy for them to keep in touch with all the people they left behind in the states.”

the couple seem content with living in valletta and in this particular house. they are inspired by the views and work comfortably, think and dream while looking out at the deep blue Med.

kelly. “there’s a pretty high-energy pace during the day in valletta. there are lots of different people coming and going and when the weather’s nice, lots of boats to watch going in and out of Marsamxett harbour. we love looking at the sea and having great restaurants so close by.

“we wouldn’t need a bigger house, but we wouldn’t want a smaller one, either. the three floors and bedrooms are perfect for right now. the tall ceilings and rooftop deck with views make it feel ample and spacious. our former house was six bedrooms and five bathrooms – when we bought it we thought that we’d never fill it up. of course, we did. i think we tend to use whatever is before us, no more, no less.”

the same paving flows into the house and serves as an earthy base for a combination of selected Minotti and porro furniture, boffi bathrooms and a fully equipped arclinea kitchen, down to the last champagne glass.

but these are only the finishing touches. the real base of the home is in the clever structure. whilst zoning in the living room is kept unmistakably clear, the flow between eating, lounging, cooking, basking and swimming is seamless.

ather simon was born in london and spent nearly twenty years of service at all saints church, northampton. he is a chaplain in the

venerable order of st John and st John ambulance anglican chaplain, the chaplain of the Malta sea cadets, as well as a territorial chaplain in the british army looking after the cambridge university officer training corps. Further to this, he is a liveryman of the worshipful company of Musicians. in short, Father simon has nothing to prove.

elegant is the only word fitting enough to describe his home. the structure of the residence is unaltered, but the décor is all his. he brought some of his favourite pieces along with him from england and the end result is an eclectic and comfortable space with so many remarkable antique pieces, paintings, objects d’art and books that you feel as though you want to sit in one space and just stare for a little while.

throughout the house, touches of continental europe, the Far east, and north america reflect the newly international trade made available during the seventeenth century. traces of the italian renaissance through dutch execution are evident in various pieces.

the other major influence that is evident amongst the decor of Father simon’s home is the baroque style, found not only in specific details and pieces, but also in the overall eclecticism of the space.

there are so many rooms within the residence that it is possible not to know exactly which one you’re in at times. the hallway to the back of the cathedral leads to the principal sitting room, sumptuous in subtle greens, blues and neutrals. the large window leads out to a spectacular sea view, one of the very few reminders that we’re in the Mediterranean and not england.

room after room leads into another beautifully decorated one – it seems endless. Father simon’s private quarter has an almost ethereal feel to it with its muted light and quietness. the imposing four-poster bed with sheer and simple draped materials on and around it promises sound sleep and unworldly dreams.

a small desk with eccentric pieces surrounding a sensible Macbook computer sum up Father simon’s approach to things in the same way that the trendy persol sunglasses sit in the entrance hall silver tray without irony: present, yet poised. Father simon does not speak a lot about himself but it is clearly evident that his membership of the worshipful company of Musicians is very important to him: “my lifestyle can be summarised very simply in that my love of music informs my Faith”.

this home is positively remarkable and what’s more – it’s the real thing. these days we’re talking about getting the retro look but the reverend has achieved the real thing, hands down.

Father Simon certainly wouldn’t allow us to photograph his house for vanity reasons. The feature of this home in HOMEWORKS was on condition that this article would advertise the residence’s hire of the stunning terrace with adjacent reception rooms, made glorious by the breathtaking view of the sea, the recently restored Fort Manoel with its beautiful Baroque Chapel and beyond. It’s the perfect spot for formal and informal receptions, wedding receptions, drinks parties and suppers. oday many people don’t treat houses like homes – instead, they follow trends. in turn, their

houses and apartments faithfully resemble furniture shops. in such interiors, the personal touches that express the owner’s personality are nowhere to be seen. in this feature i have taken a different direction. with the intention of challenging the concept that ‘an impersonal interior is today’s interior’, i went in search of alternative approaches to furnishing. My quest took me on some enlightening journeys to antique shops, mission bazaars, charity shops and boot sales, as well as conventional furniture retailers. what i found were some quirky objects and some beautiful furniture from yesterday’s interiors and trends.

the term “retro” means any new furniture that resembles design concepts from the past, especially the periods 1950-1990; in other words, designs with vintage qualities. retro furniture generally has curvy lines and smooth surfaces, lightweight aluminium and fibreglass used with wood. the style greatly influences modern furniture pieces today and people are including the modern designs of the 50s and 60s (their parents’ era), into their homes. whether nostalgic for a simpler time when people had more spare time, worked from nine to five and spent more time at home, or are just tired of the clinical minimalism trend in furniture today, retro is regaining attention and popularity. these now classic designs are back in production.

eclecticism is the borrowing of a variety of styles from different sources and eras, and combining them together. the eclectic interior is characterised by an absence of a particular style. it’s a mixture of interesting objects chosen for their individual merits. collectors, artistic, creative people and those who travel to far flung corners of the world tend to embrace eclecticism, bringing back treasured rugs with intricate designs to brighten polished concrete floors. ethnic jewellery from minority tribes is hung on modern architectural light fittings and exquisitely carved objects jostle for tabletop space with techi 21st century ‘must haves’. all tossed together with no hope of harmony, they nonetheless challenge, stimulate and please us. imagine a late 18th century walnut glass fronted cabinet to display your beloved Jimy choo shoe collection in an otherwise, ultra minimalist white lacquered bedroom and you are getting a sense of eclecticism.

so loved by our grandparents, antiques have mostly disappeared from today’s smaller homes. while searching for unusual decorative objects and furniture for this feature, i was surprised to find some beautiful antique pieces with very reasonable price tags. i decided to use pink, one of this summer’s ‘hot’ fashion colours, and re-invent some of the lovely old pieces i discovered. seeking an opulent style in contrast to the clinical interiors favoured today, i chose a bergere sofa and chairs – the ‘sunday best’ of the formal Maltese drawing rooms

of the past. they were gathering dust with remnants of their original faded upholstery fabric, suggesting an altogether different lifestyle. beautiful and solid, with fine carved features, the whole suite of four chairs plus sofa can be bought for the equivalent price of one good, new armchair. two rich silky, soft velvet upholstery fabrics in hot fuchsia pink and deep plum for the sofa and chairs pulls them into the 21st century to be integrated into a modern apartment. big feather filled cushions piled up at the back make for very comfortable seating. the zebra rug brings a 19th century african expedition fantasy to mind.

the elaborate antique wooden fire screen is an interesting piece to include in a bedroom. here it’s hung with a vintage, charity shop velvet and taffeta dress and pink glass beads. the beautiful party shoes are from my personal collection, amongst the crystal decanters and tabletop ornaments – an eccentric decision better understood by other ‘shoe women’.

some wonderful old metal and glass light fittings can be salvaged from charity shops, garage sales and antique shops, depending on your budget. these look equally great placed in contemporary interiors. suspend at low to mid height in a corner and add candles if the fitting doesn’t light.

GARDENREVAMPDon’t we all sometimes feel the need for a change? From a mere change of look to a complete rethink of where we are heading, sometimes very little goes a long a way in relieving the inevitable boredom of the unchanged and slightly worn. Our gardens too may be looking a little tired, and while complete makeovers may require careful thought and plenty of work, a few clever touches may be all that’s needed to inject new life into those drab and monotonous areas that have been crying out for a revamp.

tart by making a checklist of your existing plants, which may have been accumulated and

scattered around the garden over the years without much thought. Note the ones that are not thriving, or which have grown too large for their space. Pull out or prune the overgrown and shapeless ones and relocate those with the wrong exposure. Give a sense of continuity to your borders by grouping plants to create masses and drifts. Repeat planting and a limited colour palette unifies and creates impact. Swathes of ground covers and fillers have the same effect and can be

used to pull together a planting bed or different areas of the garden. Or maybe it’s the lawn, which is not thriving despite all the attention that has been lavished upon it. Why not change the concept completely? Transform the area into a colourful, fragrant and low maintenance gravel garden. The gravel will still provide an accessible surface, while pockets of bulbs, herbs and perennials soften and add year-round interest.

Give purpose to that shady patch under mature trees where nothing ever seems to grow by creating a cool seating area for

summer reading or siestas. Place a layer of bark mulch or pebbles to conceal the bare soil, plant a few shade lovers such as Aspidistra, Clivia or Vinca minor and tie a hammock to two sturdy branches for the perfect finishing touch. The same applies to a damp, dark corner of a courtyard.

A small water feature can become a wonderful focal point, while playful accessories like an old mirror will reflect the light and enlarge the space.

Think of the vertical plane as much as the horizontal. Dress up a bare wall with a trellis on which to twine a pretty climber, or place a simple arbour or pergola over a path or patio on which to grow edible and non-edible vines. That way the smallest of spaces can provide an opportunity for gardening, and even for growing some produce. Dead tree stumps with an interesting branch structure, rather than being removed, can also offer the perfect support for climbers.

On the same note, a driveway needn’t be boring and bland either. Side walls can be clad with climbers and espaliers, which don’t require width but definitely add life. Even a centre strip of low growing plants that cars can still drive over makes the most of available space and is easy to implement.

Larger gardens can be divided into different areas according to function, and separated with shrub borders, level changes or low hedges. Dividing makes a property look bigger, and purpose can be given even to the most unused and unpredictable of spaces. Think of a kids’ play area, a dining and relaxation area, somewhere for the dog to roam around undisturbed, maybe a raised vegetable garden or a herb patch.

Our gardens, just like we do, go through different seasons and stages and teach us about impermanence, the necessity for change and the power of reinvention. By seconding these natural cycles, and by interpreting them in a positive and creative manner, we realise how change and opportunity in gardening are undeniably intertwined.

let us get the terminology right. it is the broad bean. the italian term is the fava bean, also adopted by the english. there are generally two types of broad beans – the larger one, for which the term refers to and then there is the smaller one, also referred to as the horse bean or field bean. the thing is, the smaller bean tends to be tastier than the larger broad bean. For the sake of the article we refer to the legume as the broad bean.

the broad bean dates as far back as 6,000 bc and is one of the oldest, if not the oldest legumes around. it is part and parcel of our diet and in some regions also part of the culture (italian regions vary from frowning at human consumption of the legume in the north, to consuming them raw with pecorino sardo in liguria).

in Mistra when we want to recondition our soil and give the land some time to recover its nitrogen and balance, we plant broad beans. it is the best natural conditioner.

throughout the winter it prevents the soil from corroding away, since it acts as a cover crop against the lashing rain. it is a hardy plant and it can withstand severe climate conditions, yet it’s susceptible to fungal diseases. For us in Mistra, where we have high salinity water, the broad beans thrive, since they are very hardy.

From a medical perspective, you might suffer from a condition known as favism. i know i suffer from it and i am therefore not allowed to eat raw broad beans. this is related to thalassemia and in a way is a genetic development around the Mediterranean region to stave off malaria, which historically broad beans were used to do.

but we are here to see how we can enjoy the broad beans.

they have two shells: the outside and the inside. For some recipes, it is better to peel off the inside cover of the bean since this can, in some cases, interfere with the pleasure of consuming them.

when we talk about recipes involving broad beans we can probably pick a recipe from every country from across the world. they are such a staple and have been for thousands of years that we could easily come up with indian, south american, african or Middle eastern recipes all containing broad beans. For today, let us stay within our shores.

“the smoked pancetta in this dish is the strongest flavour for the wine to contend with. For red wine lovers a light bodied red would suffice but i am going to opt for a full flavoured, oak aged white that has medium acidity, because i think it will complement the broad beans better and refresh the palate if the pancetta used is slightly on the salty side. the oak in this barrel fermented gran cavalier chardonnay will also go perfectly with the smoked meat.”

“calamari, cooked in certain ways, is one of those seafood dishes that occasionally tolerates the use of a red wine to accompany it. in actual fact a full-bodied white wine would work well here as well, but i am going to opt for a light bodied red, such as Medina syrah carignan grenache. this red has virtually no tannins and is therefore very soft and easy drinking, which will make it ideal with this delightful dish and of course its red syrah ‘syrupy’ sauce.”

brOAD beANs WiTh PANCeTTAarguably the nicest, simplest, easiest way to eat broad beans is the italian way of sautéing pancetta and broad beans with garlic. do not overdo the garlic. the idea is to enjoy the combination and balance of all the flavours. use honest pancetta like the one we make at Margo’s. it makes all the difference.

ingredients

2 whole cloves of garlic, slightly smashed2tbsp oevoo (organic extra virgin olive oil)150g finest quality smoked pancetta, cut into generous cubes300g broad beans, peeled and cleaned salt & pepper to taste

Methodusing the side of a knife, press on the garlic cloves and squash them a little until they crack.

gently heat a skillet with the olive oil and the whole garlic in it. as soon as bubbles start appearing around the garlic, throw in the pancetta and cook until it starts browning slightly around the edges. throw in the broad beans and toss. add pepper, but be careful with the salt since the pancetta is quite salty in itself.

after three minutes, turn off the heat and cover the skillet for a further two minutes. remove the garlic.

serve with rustic bread.

CAlAMAri WiTh brOAD beANs, POTATOes & sYrAh sAuCealfonso laccarino is one of those hard working culinary heroes with his family-run 2 Michelin star restaurant in sta. agata on the amalfi coast. he was the one who encouraged me to ditch everything and cook for a living. this is one of his recipes that he shared with me. when we served it at palazzo santa rosa guests used their telephones to take photos of the beautiful dish.

ingredients

4 medium sized calamari300g broad beans, cleaned2 medium sized potatoes, cubed and boiled for 6 minutes (depending on the type of potato)2tbsp balsamic aged vinegar250ml good syrah wine2tbsp (scant) sugar1tbsp fine breadcrumbs2tbsp parsley, chopped1 clove of garlic, finely chopped 20ml oevoo (organic extra virgin olive oil)

MethodMix the sugar and wine in a saucepan and reduce to the point where you end up with a rather thick syrup. set aside.

in a pan gently heat the oil and the garlic. add the potatoes and the broad beans followed by the vinegar. cover and cook for 4 minutes until the beans are tender but not over cooked. turn off, add the parsley and the breadcrumbs. season. let cool.

clean the calamari and grill over a hot griddle. baste with oil from time to time. once the calamari are cooked, fill them with the mixture. set aside. before serving, put in a hot oven for a few minutes, cut at an angle across and place on a plate. decorate with some oevoo drops and the syrah sauce.

ver the years, the earth has stretched; moved, lifted and eroded. rivers flowed forming spectacular ravines and sculpting habitats where water, fauna

and rock formations harmoniously coexist. as one travels across europe one sees relics of greek or roman temples – a human stamp on the most beautiful of natural sites. when architects have the rare opportunity to work on sites of such great natural beauty they may choose different approaches. sometimes the building is designed like a chameleon, and attempts are made to nestle the building in the surrounding landscape. Many such examples exist in sardinia.

the buildings are arranged so that visual intrusion caused by increased building mass has minimal impact. over the years, stunning houses in ibiza and Majorca took an entirely different approach. the produced designs were unabashedly bold. no attempt was made to conceal, fit or morph into the existing landscape. the man made is set linearly, as a counter product to the amorphous natural forms.

villa amanzi has taken the latter route. the residence commands a cascading, west facing ravine in phuket, thailand with a stunning outlook over the azure blue of the andaman sea to the south. the project is clearly driven by the granite rock and the view, which dominate at every juncture. constant reference is made to the rock and sea, capitalising on the drama created by the meeting of these two elements.

from above, the building appears to be a sandwich with a sottiletta of Gruyere

the dramatic fall at the edge of the rock face defines the northern site limit. with equal drama, bedrooms span above the living area from one side to the other of the ravine while entertaining areas beneath cascade down to the valley. at a sharp perpendicular, a linear horizon pool sits above the emerald hues of the andaman sea and acts as the focal point of the project. the arrival to the house is at the middle floor. this is where all entertainment, living and kitchen areas are found. the upper level consists of four bedrooms, each with a bathroom en-suite, all enjoying spectacular views. occupants are sure to settle in west facing areas during sundown. this is the best time to experience the gentle climate and a breathtaking view of the sun’s rays glistening on the sea. behind the pool one finds two further bedrooms, a private spa and a large games room.

the great challenge in the making of this quality project lay in working out how to support the bedroom zone, without resorting to vertical columns. in addition, the protection of the natural surroundings, as well as the transportation of the materials was a daunting task. a floor-to-ceiling steel beam was used to span across the space column free, thus transforming the structure into that of an uninterrupted clear span bridge.
