We hope everyone had an excellent summer full of fun events. We are freshly back from our annual trip to Pebble Beach for Monterey Car Week where we had the honor of being invited by Ferrari SpA to display our Ferrari 360 Challenge car. This was a unique experience of being included in Ferrari’s celebration of 90 years in racing. The Challenge car was prominently displayed with racing cars from 1929 to present day.

In early August Passport Transport picked up from Ferrari of New England and delivered our car flawlessly to the concours staging area at the equestrian center at Pebble Beach. This is where we met our Challenge car and drove it in the Ferrari parade of race cars to the first fairway at Pebble Beach in front of Casa Ferrari.

If you’ve not been to Monterey Car Week it is an unrivaled week of car nirvana and we highly recommend attending.A big thank you to Ferrari SpA, Ferrari North America, Passport Transport, and Ferrari of New England for expertly preparing our car.We look forward to seeing you at an event this year, hopefully at the Epic Holiday Party at the beautiful McKelvy estate in Weston, MA.

T he Cappola’s have been researching sites for a unique dinner and drive-in movie experience and it finally came together for the 3rd Rhode

Island chapter event of 2019. We had an elegant dinner on the patio of a replica 16th century castle with turrets, towers, and even a moat. This was followed by a movie at one of the few remaining drive-in theaters in the region. Research commenced with Wendy scoping out the barren drive-in landscape to confirm safe exotic car entry. We’ve tested many theaters in New England and the skid plates on our 360 are a testament to that. We reserved spaces and being a beautiful night with Lion King and Toy Story 4 playing it was sure to be a sellout come dusk. Satisfied with the setup we moved along to The Castle restaurant in Leicester, MA.

The Castle restaurant started operating in 1950 and in addition to the fine food, impeccable service, and award-winning wine cellar, they also have a collection of period appropriate artifacts. Wendy and Rose are standing next to the 15th Century German armor that greets you upon entry, just over the draw bridge and moat. Located on peaceful Lake Sargent, construction started in 1937 using regional field stone material. In 1966, The Castle expanded with stones and lumber from the former Worcester Public Library, YWCA, and the Elks Home. A lovely setting for a delicious meal, and the dessert cart was a perfect finish for the cappuccino’s awaiting us at the drive-in. Our evening continued with a short jaunt to the drive-in which not surprisingly was packed with SUVs, trucks, and excited kids camping

out in the family buggies. Little did they know there would be a short pre-show event with a 328, 360, 488, 550, CTS-V, and a Murcielago slipping into the spaces held earlier. The kids were entertained by the “frunk cars”, curiously asking how we would be watching the movie in such a small space, so cute. Instead of “frunking it” we setup chairs with portable radios creating a surround sound experience in what would quickly become a family style, bug free zone. The 52-year history of serving up a classic drive-in experience starting with golden oldies playing on the drive-in radio channel did not disappoint. If you’re seeking a night out in central Massachusetts and are just not sure what to do, look no further than The Castle and Joe’s Drive-in, in Leicester, MA.

At several sports car events, owners showed me dash deterioration just under the windshield in several Ferraris (a dash disease that is

definitely not specific to Ferraris). These effects arise when parked in full sun without shade (for ex, at events; they don’t call them “lawn events” for nothing) and exacerbated when windows are up. One of our metro Boston car event “hot spots” is famous for such conditions, especially during summer - owners have hats, sun glasses, and sun block while their cars are unprotected.

Someone noticed that my 50 and 52 yr old dashes (2 different cars and events) were in good condition and knew I had done upholstery work over the years as well as worked at two resto shops. Realizing that this problem is not uncommon and prevention is simple, but not common knowledge, I decided to launch some advice here.

But first, a few words about the damage and cost. Solar heat and UV result in cracking, shrinkage, distortion of plastic vent surrounds, and discoloration (especially, of mouse fur… no, I’m not chugging chianti - you’ll know what that is if you own a Daytona or Dino). There are very few easy fixes for all these conditions. Restoration often requires finding a specialist who can do the repair (for ex, recover your dash). Depending on the problem, there’s the shocking price tag of dash recovering, stitching (what color is your thread?), matching the color and grain of your material, contouring the leather, and avoiding dings to anything on or near your dash.

All of you know about those unfolding silver sun shades placed inside the windshield. Some are generic and some custom made for your model. I gave up on those because unfolding them required a special yoga course in origami maneuvers and suppression (or not) of 4 letter

utterances. If your top is down, they provide no protection when the sun shifts behind your car. Then, there’s the question of storing the monster and the mounting position of your EZ PASS.

The info below applies to all dashes. You are probably thinking that I am going to tell you about some new product. Well….yes and no. The “yes” first: There are thin rubberized vinyl covers that mount outside your windshield (covering it) and attach by 2 elastic straps to the 2 side view mirrors. As a securing and security measure, above the straps are 2 flaps that tuck inside the door jam and cannot be pulled out when the door is closed. For older cars without 2 side mirrors, the inner flaps are still effective. And, it is weather proof (4 season) and folds up the size of a lap top into its pouch.

made, but specs are given for width and the straps can easily be modified (shortened or extended) with a little creativity and no tools are required. They may be a bit over-sized for 60s sports cars (but do fit with more material inside the car). I am a convert and use: OxGord Windshield Cover, $29.95 (Amazon). So, how well do they work? On an August day with the car in the sun (85-90 deg outside), without any windshield cover and the windows down 2 inches, the dash temp reached 160 deg - almost clambake temp? Then, the OxGord was installed and the temp dropped to 110 deg after 1.5 hrs. It doesn’t take a NASA tech to predict an even lower temp, if the cover is installed before the greenhouse effect kicks in; not to mention the comfort factor when you re-enter your car.

Now, for the low-tech solution, I’ve used for years: a 4-5 ft long black bath towel, folded in its long axis along a curve - edge up against the inside of the windshield, with the free edges hanging just over the lip of the back side of the dash. This method protects the top of the dash, no matter what position the sun is in. And folding your seats forward helps them and you on re-entry.

The towel is easily removed when concours judges drop by or a crowd of gawkers gathers. If folded neatly, it is not easily visible from a distance. If necessary, another can be used over the rear parcel shelf – another potential hot spot (in some cases, also protecting the housing of the back-up light). If you carry large microfiber cloths, they can double as detailers and dash/shelf protectors.

For those of you thinking about the solar factor while driving, keep in mind that air is flowing over these surfaces (+ or - A/C). A twice a year cleaning and application of leather or vinyl protectant (except for mouse fur) significantly delays solar damage by preventing desiccation and blocking some solar rays (wavelengths, in science speak). So, you can’t always park in the shade, but you can prevent dash damage and resulting resto bills with some simple, inexpensive measures.

IN THE YEAR OF RELENTLESS RAIN (Year of the Duck? Year of the Kayak?), the Ferrari and Alfa Clubs picked the best day of the year for the

annual Glynn Motorsports cars & coffee event, hosted by Paul Glynn and Michael Wrigley, who were besieged as every year. A record 40-some sign-ups and some “drive-bys” were so preoccupied by the Italian

hardware that the refreshments lasted up to the end (unlike last year); likely, the bel tempo kept everyone outside, where the cars were. Owners came from almost every New England state and some cars, rarely seen at club events, came out of the woodwork.Duettos came out in record numbers (6). A gaggle of Ferraris nested together: a rare 308 vetroresina (fiberglass), a 330 GT, a

458 Spider, and a recent California, plus an older model in the shop. Alfa GTVs and Spiders came out in robust numbers, while GTV6s (2), Milanos (2), and new Giulias (1) were sparse. For modern designs, we had not only the Ferraris, but also three Alfa 4Cs in stunning colors: yellow, dark anthracite, and red.
