Brightcove is an online video/Internet TV platform used by media companies, businesses, and organizations to publish and distribute videos on the web. In addition, it allows content creators/owners (both independent and established media entities) to monetize their videos/contents with ad revenues.

There are currently three editions of Brightcove:

Brightcove Basic - for individuals and small organizations Brightcove Pro - for larger companies operating a single web property Brightcove Enterprise - for publishers and conglomerates operating

multiple web properties

It has recently been nominated for Streaming Media Reader's Choice Awards.

What's the Difference?

According to Brightcove founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire, Brightcove was built around the needs of content owners/providers and media businesses as opposed to those of the consumers.

With Brightcove, content owners/providers can program their own broadband channels, and either distribute their contents on their own sites or syndicate them to other websites. They can also have their videos included in the various video search engines and aggregation sites. In addition, content owners/providers can choose whether to make their contents promotional or ad-supported, or they can

charge consumers either by renting out or selling their contents to them.

Moreover, Brightcove allows content owners/providers to brand their Brightcove platforms.

There's Money in Brightcove

Big media companies such as Dow Jones, Newsweek, and The New York Times have placed their bets on Brightcove over YouTube primarily because Brightcove protects their online video from video-sharing hoards and provides them with a multitude of options to make money from them.

Brightcove allows content providers to use its player on their sites for free, provided that they allow Brightcove to sell ads on their videos. The revenues earned from the ads are then split 50/50 between Brightcove and the video owners.

It allows content providers to sell their own advertising on their videos, charging them with fee based on the number of people viewing their video and the amount of ads they've sold.

It allows content providers to set their own prices for video rentals and sales provided that they agree to share 30% of their revenues with Brightcove.

With a fee, it allows content providers to have their videos free of any form of advertising. The fee is computed based on the bandwidth cost of serving up the video.

Brightcove for Business to Business Marketing

Brightcove enables marketers to easily and quickly publish customized and branded video players and mini sites, providing them with complete control over their contents' branding. In addition, it enables viral distribution of videos/content and provides content providers with means of tracking their video content easily and monitoring their performance.

Rumored Google Buyout

In September 16, 2009, Mark Glaser, editor of the PBS MediaShift website, posted a message (tweeted) on Twitter telling of talks between Brightcove and Google about a $500 million to $700 million buyout. This was seen as by many as something that's very likely to happen since Google CEO Eric Schmidt had been quoted (earlier in September) by Nikkei as saying that Google is poised to seriously look at acquisitions again.

Glaser would later say that he never mentioned anything about Google buying Brightcove and that all his source told him was the companies were in buyout discussion and that it was not a done deal.

After several days of silence from the two companies concerned, Brightcove founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire said in an interview with Robert Andrews that “The company is not for sale...” and that they “don't comment on rumor and speculation”.

Why Google Wants Brightcove

Before the rumor got debunked, speculations came out why Google wanted to acquire Brightcove. Some speculated that by acquiring Brightcove, Google would gain easy access to Brightcove's high-level clients which include Discovery Communications, MTV Networks, Reuters, and The New York Times. Although some people think that $500 million to $700 million is too big an amount to pay for a customer base, many still think that it was a more likely target than Brightcove's technology since Google already has YouTube which is already offering pretty much the same kind of services Brightcove is.

But still, the possibility is still there, to some people, that Google may well be after Brightcove's technology.

So what will Google be doing with Brightcove? Here are some possibilities:

to deliver video advertising and serve video ads on YouTube to enable them to compete with Hulu to enable video playback/streaming in Google Docs, Google Reader, City Tours,

etc. to create a video delivery service for Android-based devices

And since Google always have something brewing in their labs, there may be some things going on in there that we will never come to think or imagine until the time comes when Google decides to make them public.
