In 1986 there was a landmark book published by William Fischer titled “How to Fight Cancer and Win”. In it Fischer revealed the work of Dr. Johanna Budwig, a 7-time Nobel Prize nominee for her work in nutrition. Because she was in East Germany, very little was known of her work in any western countries prior to this time.

Fsh-based EFAs have been shown to lower blood pressure, keep our arteries healthy, lower cholesterol, and keep our blood platelets from sticking together. Fish-based EFAs have also been linked to prevent -ing arrhythmias. One study showed how taking 1 gram of fish oil daily reduced arrhythmias in patients who had survived a heart attack. EFAs from cold water fish have also been shown to help alleviate depression. In fact, folks who have been diagnosed with depression typically have lower levels of EPA and DHA. With this in mind, a study of over 5,000 people found that men and women who rarely consumed fish were almost three times as likely to be depressed as those who eat fish more often. As if this were not enough, omega-3 EFAs may help people with osteoarthritis, lupus, eczema, and other skin conditions. And it has also been linked to a lowered risk of developing certain forms of cancer. So, here’s the way you can not eat your fish and have it too: give fish oil capsules a try! This way, you can get all of the benefits of eating fish without ever actually having to consume it. If you like fish, that’s great! But keeping some fish oil capsules on hand might be a good idea too, for those weeks when you are just not in the mood for mackerel. Your body, your mother, and your physician will all thank you!

Heart disease – the number one health issue in our country

Y ou are probably used to seeing a variety of colorful cancer ribbons displayed on the products you buy at the grocery store, in advertisements, and on

the backs of vehicles. As most of us know, pink ribbons symbolize breast cancer and blue ribbons are for prostate cancer. Ironically, what you might not typically see as often are red ribbons - the color that has been selected to represent heart disease. Although serious conditions like cancer rightfully get a lot of attention in our country, heart disease is actually the number one leading cause of death. It is also the leading health problem in our country - at least 50 million people have some form of cardiovascular disease. While these statistics are definitely scary, they do not have to be inevitable. Since the heart is a muscle, it should respond well to a healthy diet, exercise, and some key nutrients and supplements. In fact, well over two dozen vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies have all been linked to improved cardiovascular health.

What are these heart-healthy natural remedies? Starting out with the vitamins, the always-popular vita -min C has been shown to help regulate blood pressure. In addition, several members of the extended B-family of vitamins are heart-healthy as well: thiamine may help lower cholesterol, and a deficiency of vitamin B6 has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease. Similar -ly, a deficiency in folic acid has been linked to an increase in homocysteine, an amino acid that has been shown to lead to heart disease. Vitamin B12 helps the folic acid with the formation of red blood cells. Several minerals are also crucial for heart health: chromium , magnesium and selenium all work hard at keeping the cardiovascular system pumping along, and being low in any or all may lead to trouble. The antioxi -dant known as taurine can help correct arrhythmias by keeping the heartbeat stable. L-Carnitine , an amino acid, has a pretty impressive track list of helping with cardiovascular health. In addi -tion to helping with oxygen uptake, it may also reduce

blood levels of both lipids and triglycerides. No discussion of heart-healthy nutrients would be com -plete without Coenzyme Q10 , or CoQ10. It has been favorably linked to just about every cardiovascular issue there is, from mitral valve prolapse to congestive heart failure. CoQ10 helps with the production of ATP, which our bodies use for energy, and it also has been found to improve the oxygen level inside the tissues of the heart. In addition, proanthocyanidins and anthocyanidins, typi -cally derived from grape seed extract and/or bilberry fruit, have been shown to help people with hypertension by lowering their blood pressure. And like folic acid, betaine has been favorably linked to a reduction in homocysteine levels. The herb bromelain has been shown to help with an -gina pain, and alpha lipoic acid, or ALA is known to help eliminate heart-damaging free radicals. Other herbs can also help keep our hearts healthy and happy. For example, hawthorne may help lower blood pressure, and ginkgo biloba possesses powerful antioxi -dant properties. Dandelion, milk thistle, curcumin, gym -nema sylvestre and cayenne pepper have all been studied for their positive e�ect on the heart. Flaxseed powder, rich in the omega-3 essential fatty acids, is a great addition for cardiovascular health, as are many homeopathic remedies. By eating right, getting enough exercise and taking a combination of as many of these nutrients as possible, you should go a long way in helping to keep the most valuable muscle of your body pumping along happily for years to come.

Supplement forms of MCHA typically come from organically-raised bovines that come from New Zealand. An herbal remedy called equisetum arvense may also be helpful. The numbers associated with osteoporosis are pretty grim, but they are not inevitable for anyone. O ver the years, vitamin E has become more well-known for its health-giving properties. But why is this? What is it about this popular vitamin, which

we often take in a golden capsule form, that makes it so good for us? For one reason, vitamin E is an antioxidant. As you may already know, antioxidants go to work in our bodies fighting o� free radicals. Free radicals show up when our bodies are exposed to things like cigarette smoke, too much sunlight, and chemical pollutants like bug spray. Free radicals have been linked to several health problems, as well as premature aging. This is why so many of us are rightfully concerned with free radicals, and ways to get rid of them. When we take vi -tamin E, it seeks out the free radicals and destroys them. In addition, vitamin E has been shown to help with many specific health issues, including problems a�ecting the joints, immune-system function, nerve damage from diabetes, wound healing, and memory loss. Overall, however, much of the research on vitamin E has focused on cancer and heart disease.

In one study conducted in Finland, supplement -ing with vitamin E daily led to a reduction of prostate cancer. Other research found that taking vitamin E caused a reduced chance of getting colon cancer. Many scientists feel that these results are linked to vitamin E’s antioxidant properties, and also for its positive e�ect on the immune system.

Vitamin E and the heart Research has shown that taking vitamin E can help prevent the oxidation of LDL or “bad” cholesterol, which in turn reduces the chance of getting atheroscle -rosis. In addition, vitamin E can halt the formation of blood clots, and it has been linked to a reduction in in -flammation. This is a key finding because inflammation has been shown to lead to heart disease. Overall, two large studies from the Harvard School of Public Health have indicated that vitamin E supplementation led to a 40 percent lowered risk of heart disease. Additional research has found that vitamin E can help folks who have already been diagnosed with a cardio -

vascular condition. A research project conducted in 1996 called the Cambridge Heart Antioxidant Study found that people with coronary atherosclerosis had a 77 percent lower chance of having another non-fatal heart attack when they took vitamin E regularly.

What type to take? Technically, vitamin E is a group of compounds called tocopherols and tocotrienols. While most supplement forms sold over the years have been made up of just the alpha-form of tocopherol, more and more people are now wanting to take other forms as well. Since research indicates that the beta, gamma, and delta types of vitamin E are also extremely beneficial to our health, finding one that includes a combination of these compounds seems to be a prudent choice.

Essential fatty acids – what they are, why we need them

By now, you have probably heard about something called essential fatty acids or EFAs. These are nutrients that our bodies need in order to stay healthy. While we are able to produce many nutrients on our own (think vitamin D and sunlight), for some reason, Mother Nature decided to let us get our EFAs from our diets. Actually, for many centuries, this was no problem, as many foods contained nice amounts of these healthy nutrients, which have been linked to improving literally dozens of health issues like cancer and heart disease.

Unfortunately, time and our quest for convenience have changed all of that. As we have grown to rely more on processed foods, our levels of EFAs have been steadily falling. As a result, many nutritionists now believe that the vast majority of us are sorely lacking in EFAs.

How can I get more EFAs?

Incredibly rich in an EFA called linolenic acid or omega-3, supplementing with flaxseed can be a good way to boost

your body’s levels of EFAs.Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce

inflammation in areas like the joints and skin, as well as lower cholesterol. In addition, flaxseed oil has been linked to helping lower blood pressure, easing skin conditions like eczema, controlling constipation, improving hair and nails, and treating the symptoms of menopause. Literally, scores of health issues have been found to be improved by adding in EFA supplements.

While flaxseed oil also contains decent amounts of another EFA called omega-6, another oil, obtained from the borage plant, contains even more. Omega-6, also called gamma linoleic acid or GLA, also appears to work as a natural anti-inflammatory. As a result, research is finding that it may be useful in combating diseases that

Specifically, fish oil is rich in eicosapentaenoic and docosahexanoic acids, two extremely potent forms of EFAs. Like flax and borage, fish oil has also been found to help with a variety of health conditions including heart disease and high blood pressure, depression, cancer, skin issues, and even Crohn’s disease.

One is great, two is better, but all three is best!
