POP WILL EAT ITSELF

THE BIG YEAR Sunday, 8.30pm ·11

Directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) this subtle comedy is the perfect way to see out the week. Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson star as three birdwatchers about to embark on their Big Year - a term in birding meaning seeing or hearing as many birds as possible in a calendar year. They criss-cross the continent (including to Alaska's westernmost island), follow migration patterns, and head for storms that force birds to ground.

Saturday, September 6 • Manning Bar, University of Sydney Union

Pop Will Eat Itself, aka PWEI, aka the Poppies stormed on to the late-80's UK scene with their high-energy, industrial-tinged dance-rock anthems. They shared a stage with such musical contemporaries as Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Jesus Jones, and The Wonder Stuff. However, it was their sample driven, biting social satire that set them apart from the others and they quickly gained a rabid worldwide following. Relentless live shows and groundbreaking artwork also solidified their position as innovators. After a years of going full tilt, the band racked up an awesome musical legacy before running out of steam in 1996 when Clint Mansell called it quits to work on his award winning soundtrack career. All remained quiet on the Poppies front, bar a brief reunion in 2005 until 2011 when original member Graham Crabb, legendary vocalist Mary Byker (Gaye Bykers on Acid, Apollo 440), drumming powerhouse Jason Bowld (Pitchshifter, Killing Joke) and Gary Numan's guitarist Tim Muddiman fused an all new reinvigorated line up of the band.

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB Out Now RATEOM

If ever there was a case to be made that Matthew McConaughey has well and truly cast off the rom-com beefcake image, this heart-wrenching drama would be the perfect starting point. McConaughey stars as real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. Ron, now ostracised by many of his old friends, and bereft of government-approved effective medicines, decides to take matters in his own hands. Woodroof joins forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts and established a hugely successful "buyers' club." Jarred Leto is mesmerising and barely recognisable as the transvestite Rayon.

SEETHER ISOLATE AND MEDICATE Out Now

Six albums in and South African alternametallers Seether prove that they are showing no signs of slowing down - in fact Isolate and Medicate could very well be the band's most ambitious and comprehensive release to date.

From driving rockers to out and out exercises in visceral sonic brutality, Seether cover a hell of a lot of sonic territory here and, despite not being the biggest fan of the genre, I would say that there's very little filler contained within.

Standouts include the blues-driven My Disaster and the sludgy See You at the Bottom which features, courtesy offrontman Shaun Morgan, one of the most terryfying gutteral screaming sessions since Mike Patton decided to vent his agression onamic.

Isolate and Medicate will definitely please die-hards and newcomers alike .

t seems strange to think, given the amount of critical acclaim Melody Pool's debut album The Hurting Scene has received since it's release in July last year, that it

almost didn't see the light of day.

STEPHEN BISSET

"I am just really stunned with how it has been received especially considering that I almost didn't release it because, after I recorded it I felt that it was too vulnerable and too close to home - but I'm definitely glad I did because it really has been an overwhelming twelve months:'

Pool enlisted the help of Brad Jones (Missy Higgins, Butterfly Boucher) and Jace Everett (best known for writing the theme for the hit HBO vampire soap True Blood) to oversee production duties on the album and she said both the people she was working with and the location helped with the overall sound of the record

"Nashville was definitely an inspiring place to record but I don't think I was fully aware ofit while I was there," she said.

"But I do think the mix of being completely disconnected from my life back borne and being immersed in this completely creative arena definitely helped the vibe of the alburrL I was kind of out of my comfort zone and it was good to push myself that way.

"'!b.e album was a completely different

I almost didn't release it because ... I felt that it was too vulnerable and too close tohome-but I'm definitely glad I did

cballenge to the last two EPs [ Heart To Heart Talk and Awake, You're AU Around Mel in that everything was tracked completely live in three days and then all of the overdubs were done in another three days - it was great to see everything go so smoothly. Jace and Brad were just really respectful of wbat my vision was for the record -they were such a great audience."

Since The Hurting Scene hit the streets, with pundits declaring the album as "one of the most accomplished debuts by an Australian singer songwriter", Pool has barely had time to reflect on her rising star, jetting off on a sold-out tour of the UK and Europe with Californian indie-rock duo The Milk Carton Kids as well as a slot at the Americana Music Festival in Nashville.

"Yeah, it has been a pretty hectic 12 months but it's been totally worthwhile and there have definitely been quite a few 'pinch me' moments?'

Now, after an Australian run with UK singer-songwriter Gabrielle Alpin, Pool is gearing up to hit Aussie roads again, this time on a co-headline tour with New Zealand-via Melbourne songwriter Marlon Williams - a prodigious 23-year-old talent who has been described as "the impossible love child of Elvis, Roy Orhison and Townes Van Zandt".

"I'm really looking forward to this tour - Marlon is such a great songwriter;' Pool enthused.

"It's going to be a switch back and forth headline kind of thing - say I'll headline

Lizotte's and Marlon will headline the Melbourne show - we'll be doing our own stuff as well as getting onstage together for a few duets."

Despite her workload over the past 12 months, as well as an impending move from her bome-base in Kurri to Melbourne after this tour wraps up, Pool has also found the time to pen a new crop of tracks, which she plans to record in Nashville later this year. She said that there is a certain weight of expectation surrounding the impending sessions - given the personal, and oft-melancholic nature of The Hurting Scene.

"I think I'm a little freaked out, actually," she admitted.

"Because The Hurting Scene was very much a heartbreak album and I'm not heartbroken anymore there is kind of an irrational voice saying "oh now you can'y write songs for s·Ot - but I'm sure everything will be fine.

"Musically, it's going to be a lot darker to The Hurting Scene - quite a lot of minor chords and the last album was recorded live and I really want this one to capture that same energy. Lyrically, well I've done quite a bit of growing up since the last album so it will definitely be a reflection of that:'

More than 30 years ago ABBA played eleven dates in Australia. This trip was accompanied by mass hysteria and was captured on film in ABBA - the movie.

Today, ABBA is considered one of the three largest selling recording artists in music history, alongside The Beatles and Elvis Presley. FABBA has been established since 1996, initially as the FABBA girls.

FABBA is now a world-class act comprising of professional musicians and musical theatre performers. While FABBA are dedicated to replicating the ABBA sound, they have also added the theatrics, fun and modem style to the songs as seen in the musical/movie Mamma Mia. The FABBA show has an entire wardrobe designed to capture the complete look of ABBA - from the 70'S to now. Every FABBA show is tailored to suit each individual event and function from costumes and scripting through to the song list. Ailihal jazz

Arguably the best New Orleans Style Jazz trumpeter produced in Australia, Geoff Bull has received recognition on the world stage. A descendant of Norwegian genius, violinist Ole Bull who toured the world in the mid-19th century and played with Liszt and Greig, Geoff brings some of that genius to the trumpet_ Bull formed his first New Orleans style band, the Olympia Jazz Band in the early sixties when he was a young man of 20.

Now 50 years on, GeofIhas linked up with a group of talented young musicians, all around the age that Geoffwas when he first started out. This new group, The Finer Cuts consists of Justin Fermino (Reeds), John Hibbard (Trombone), Ben Panucci (Guitar & Banjo) Harry Sutherland (Piano) and Sam "Shazam" Dobson (String Bass), with Geoff Bull (Trumpet) as their mentor. Keeping the New Orleans Jazz traditional tunes alive and adding many new compositions of their own, the Finer Cuts are quickly developing a large and excitingly diverse repertoire. A high-energy jumpin' band, the mixing of old with young blood is proving to be a huge success with both young and (the more) mature audiences.

Long live Captain Spaulding

W hen LA-born stage actor, comedian and director Frank Ferrante decided to bring his

acclaimed portrayal of legendary stage and screen comedian Groucho Marx to Australia, he wasn't sure how Antipodean audiences would react to this intrinsically American brand of humour. As it happened, he needn't have worried.

STEPHEN BISSET

"The shows have exceeded all myexpectations - I mean, I've done this show for so many years but mainly in North America where Groucho is an icon so I wasn't sure how Australian's would take to the show, but audiences have been laughing in the same places and at the same schtick - I even got a standing ovation in Byron Bay - I guess funny is funny no matter where you are?'

The show in question is An Evening with Groucho Marx and Ferrante said it was more than a mere tribute - but rather a glimpse into what it would've been like to see the moustachioed giant of comedy in a one man show at the height of his comedic powers.

"The conceit here is what it would be like to experience the result of Groucho being

asked to put on a one man show filled with zingers, schtick, songs and one liners - this was something he never did because he was so busy performing with his brothers on the stage and in film.

"It's a very fast paced show and I'd say that about a third of it is improvised -when I first saw Groucho I felt so excited and exhilarated and I hope that I can capture some of that feeling with this show?'

For Ferrante, it was a viewing of the Marx Brothers' classic A Day At the Races as an impressionable nine-year-old that ignited his passion and he said it was the Marx Brothers, in particular Groucho's irreverent sense of humour that has kept him hooked ever since.

"A neighbourhood friend told me to turn on my television and A Day at the Races was on and I was just mesmarised;' Ferrante said.

"Groucho was just so quick-witted, so irreverent and so fearless with his comedy and provided a 'great alter-ego for all us shy kids?'

Ferrante first portrayed the young Groucho Marx as a high school student in the 1980s but it wasn't until he was "discovered" by Groucho's son and playwright Arthur Marx, who cast Ferrante in the title role in Groucho: A Life in Revue that

BOWLING CLUB

he managed to parlay his early fascination with Groucho into a career that has sen him labelled the "greatest living interpreter of Groucho Marx material".

"It's great and such an honour to have that connection to the family;' Ferrante said. "Groucho's daughter [Miriam Marx Allan] is well into her eighties now and still calls me three times a day. In fact she is very interested in how her father's work is being received over here in Australia and I'm happy to report that it's being received very well?'

Producer, creator, choreographer and performer Simon Vowles - along with promoter Andrew Malouf - has been solidly working on the concept for the past nine months, penning the story, organising the soundtrack and the musical mash-Up, casting the perfect performers for the roles and much more. No stranger to working on massive shows - Simon has previously been involved with Time Warp, Westside Story, Chicago and Grease - this was the first time he had undertaken all the roles, at once, by himself.
