If mindless 90s electro pop is your bag, then chances are you’ll be “squee-ing” with delight over the news that those crazy Danish poppers Aqua are heading back our way.

With rave reviews and a string of 11 sold out shows across the country in 2012, Australian lovers of 90’s pop have another chance to relive some of the biggest moments in pop history.

In 1997 Aqua owned the airwaves and indeed the upper reaches of the charts across the globe with a string of massive pop hits. Songs including the smash hits Barbie Girl, Doctor Jones and Lollypop (Candyman) had the world dancing to some of the most loveable feel good pop music ever recorded. In Australia Aqua both won and left an indelible imprint on the hearts of pop loving fans across the country, as clearly shown by their phenomenal sold out 2012 tour.

Get ready to dance like you’ve never danced before.

WHAT'S ON

There’s no denying that psych rockers The Greatful Dead were one hell of a live band, this three-disc set is further testa-ment to that fact.

The Grateful Dead honored the start of its 25th anniversary in 1990 with a cel-ebratory three-week jaunt through North America’s east coast that’s still considered by many fans to be one of the group’s finest tours.

This set is taken from that tour - namely their legendary show at the Nassau Col-liseum with Branford Marsalis.

If you’ve never heard much of the Dead before, this is a great place to start, as many of their staples such as Dark Star, Ramble on Rose, Eyes of the World and The Wheel have rarely sounded better.

A must for die-hard Deadheads and newcomers alike.

While this dark and esoteric flick may shock any-one looking for a nice dancing distraction, it may also be director Darren Aronofsky’s finest moment.

A ballet dancer (Natalie Portman) wins the lead in Swan Lake and is perfect for the role of the deli-cate White Swan but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like the Black Swan. This tense and unselltling film is one of the best psycho-logical thrillers in recent memory.

On the day of the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver (Kevin Costner) has the oppor-tunity to save football in Cleveland when he trades for the number one pick.

Sonny must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL.

Not a bad sports flick and a worthy distraction and Costner displays his usual charm.

Because of the wonderful things she does

With such acclaimed songs as Scar, Steer and The Special Two, under her belt, there’s no doubt that the ARIA

award-winning Missy Higgins knows how to write a song that strikes an emotional chord with her audience.

However, for her latest release OZ, Higgins has turned her attention to a disparate collection of Australian song-writers - from the iconic (Paul Kelly, Slim Dusty, The Angels, Divynils, Icehouse) to the eclectic (The Drones, Something For Kate, Blackeyed Susans, Perry Keys) and the results are astounding. Her version of the mesmeric Drones track Shark Fin Blues alone will leave you gobsmacked.

If the new album wasn’t enough, Higgins as also coupled it with a book of sprawling and engaging essays that reflect on her associations with each song on the album - creating a much more personal experience akin to pouring over lyrics and liner notes, for a deeper understanding, in the vinyl heyday - something that is increasingly rarer in the age of digitised music.

Higgins told TE that the idea for the album and book and been germinating for quite some time.

“It is quite a relief to have it all finished because it has been quite a long time coming,” she said.

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

“The idea started in between my second and third album [2007’s On A Clear Night and 2012’s The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle] and then when it finally popped up again it really felt like it was the right time to tackle it.

“The idea for the book kind of evolved naturally with the album. I had an idea to write a book - a memoir - but then I came to the conclusion that I’m not really old enough for that stuff yet, but I really wanted to dabble in writing some more and so it seemed like a perfect fit. The book hopefully gives people a deeper experi-ence and delves a little bit more into my upbringing and how I came to choose the songs that ended up on the record.”

The album’s brilliant conceit is that while Higgins has turned her talents to some of Australia’s best-loved songwriters, the album never comes off a sounding overly sentimental as she didn’t necessarily want to pick the most obvious choices.

“While there are some icons, like Slim Dusty and The Angels on there, I didn’t necessarily want to go for the obvious choice,” she said.

“It was more about fining great Australian songs that really spoke to me in a way that I felt that I could interpret in a new way because I’m always really inspired by cover versions of songs that have that effect on me and make me see the song in a different light.”

While Higgins said the project’s title was an obvious nod to the location of the writers interpreted, it also had a second meaning.

“I like the idea of songwriters being like the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz,” she said.

“Some people think we’re special people who have special powers but we’re really just scared little people hiding in a back-room somewhere, working like crazy to make sure we don’t get found out.”

Aside from the eclectic cast of characters that form the inspiration for OZ, Higgins also enlisted the formidable talents of the likes of Kate Miller Heidke, Amanda Palmer and Dan Sultan [whose track, Old Fitzroy, also gets the OZ treatment] with acclaimed US songwriter/arrange/producer Jherek Bischoff (Amada Palmer, David Byrne, The Kronos Quartet) overseeing the production duties.

“Working with Jherek was just incred-ible,” Higgins enthused.

“He’s come up with these incred-ibly beautiful string arrangements for the album and just watching him work was really quite inspiring.”

All of this creative output doesn’t end with the album and book either, with Higgins expecting her first child in January next year.

“Yeah I’m quite pregnant now, but by the time the tour wraps up I’ll be extremely pregnant so, hopefully I’ll get the chance to sit back and reflect on everything for a while before a whole new adventure begins in January - it’s very exciting.”

Catch Missy Higgins at the Civic Theatre on Friday, October 3. Tickets are on sale now via premier.ticketek.com.au. The OZ package is out now.

Stevens will take us back

While his latest outfit, The Dead Daisies currently enjoying a bit of a purple patch, having just come off

the back of string of mammoth tours in the US with the likes of Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kiss and Def Leppard, it’s refreshing to see that rocker Jon Stevens still has his feet planted on the ground.

“Those big shows are great, but the size of the show is irrelevant to me - I get just as much enjoyment playing an acoustic guitar to a small audience as I do with the big rock and roll show,” Stevens told TE.

“I mean you see these big rockstars play these big shows and then go home to their mansions and twiddle their thumbs, which is definitely not for me.”

Stevens, who first sprang to public atten-tion in this country as the frontman for legendary pub rockers Noiseworks, will be back in the region for two intimate shows as part of his Take Me Back tour

“It’s an acoustic format show and really quite intimate, but in terms of what I’ll be playing, I don’t really know,” he laughed.

“It’s kind of going to be whatever I feel

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

like playing on the night and whatever the crowd calls out - I’m really looking forward to it.”

TE caught up with Stevens on an increasingly rare home stint with the Dead Dasies heavy touring schedule taking up a lot of his time - as well as another run in Jesus Christ Superstar, this time as Pontius Pilate.

Formed in 2012 by Stevens and David Lowy, the band hit the ground running with a mammoth classic rock stomper Lock N Load (co-written by Slash) and have since backed it up with two blistering EPs - Man Overboard and Face I Love and a self-titled long player. With members that include or have included the likes of Richard Fortus and Dizzy Reed( Guns n Roses), Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy), Charley Drayton ( X-pensive Winos) and Darryl Jones (Miles Davis, The Rolling Stones) threes possibly no better band to which the term “supergroup” could be applied. Although Stevens said it was a term he was loath to use.

“I certainly hate that term, because it really means nothing - I mean, you’re only as good as your last tune,” he said. “We’re just a bunch of like-minded guys who are old and ornery enough to want to do things our way. We also play our hearts out every bloody night.”

When you think of bedroom music there’s a few songs that come to mind - one of those

is definitely Hot Chocolate’s 1975 hit You Sexy Thing.. Founding member Patrick Olive tole TE he believed the success of the song is the result of stroking the listener’s ego.

“A lot of people could identify with the song. Everyone in his or her mind thinks they’re a sexy thing - they think the song is all about them,” he said.

“Nobody wants to be left out, they want to think, ‘yeah, well I’m a sexy thing as well’.”

MUSIC

You’ll win again

HOT CHOCOLATEWESTS LAMBTONWED, OCTOBER 15

It’s the combination of that make-you-want-to-dance rhythm and slightly raunchy lyrical content that makes the songs of Hot Chocolate so damn sexy.

After forming in London in 1968, Hot Chocolate went on to become the only UK band to have hits every year for 15 consecutive years.

Olive has particularly fond memories of the band’s early work during the disco era of the 70’s where the band spent time with musicians such as Leo Sawyer and Suzi Quatro.

“People weren’t afraid to let them-selves go and have a good time but I think [now] everything’s a little bit closed up through political correctness,” he said.
