This year’s Sydney Comedy Festival is shaping up to be quite a cracker and the highly-anticipated return of Noel Fielding is definitely a major drawcard.

As one half of the neo-surrealist comedy duo The Mighty Boosh, star of the even more “out there” Luxury Comedy and team captain on the hilarious music quiz, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, you can pretty much expect anything but a normal evening when Noel Fielding comes to town.

Combining Fielding’s unique, stream-of-consciousness brand of stand-up comedy, with live animation and original music, punters can also expect some of his best-loved and most whimsical characters, such as the Moon and Fantasy Man (fingers crossed for an Old Gregg appearance).

If that wasn’t enough, Fielding will also be joined by his younger brother Michael - best known for his hilarious turn as Naboo the Enigma on The Mighty Boosh.

Seminal UK shoe-gaze noise mer-chants, Swervedriver, are back with their first album in 17 years and while there are definite flashes of the raw, an-gular, noise-driven melodies that typi-fied early releases like Raise and Mezcal Head, and the more psych explorations on their 1998 swansong 99th Dream, this time around, it’s a much-more watered-down affair.

That’s not to say it’s a bad record - far from it. I Wasn’t Born to Lose You is a solid set of ridiculously punchy indie rock that is still replete with more layers of guitars than you can poke a stick at and effortless melodies.

If you’re late to the Swervedriver party, definitely check out Mezcal Head before this one, although, it’s a solid release nonetheless.

If you like your dramas gritty, this iconic South Korean flick is a must-watch. While the Spike Lee remake has some good points, this is the real deal. After being kid-napped, Oh Dae-Su spends 15 years locked up in a shabby hotel room, during which time he learns he has been framed for his wife’s murder. Upon his release, he sets out to find who imprisoned him and why.

While not as eventful as the previous two Hunger Games flicks, the first half of the conclusion is carried by a great cast - Jennif-er Lawrence, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Ju-lianne Moore, Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci et al. Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) is in District 13 after killing the games forever. Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta and rouses a nation toward revolution.

After a formidable 67-year career, R&B and gospel icon and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples is showing no signs of slowing down.

Since signing to Brett Gurewitz’s (Bad Religion) eclectic label Anti, the singer, who first found fame as part of the ground-breaking family gospel group The Staples Singers, has released three studio albums, 2007s We’ll Never Turn Back (produced by Ry Cooder), 2010’s You Are Not Alone and 2013s One True Vine, both produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.

More recently, Staples teamed up with Tweedy again working on the release of her father and Staples Singers driving force Pops Staples posthumous 2014 release Don’t Lose This - an album Pops started working on 15 years prior with his daughters Mavis, Cleotha and Yvonne, but became too ill to complete it.

“Working on my father’s LP was a beauti-ful experience,” she told TE.

“What happened was he was making the album but he wasn’t well, so I moved home to take care of him.

“One day he was lying in bed, ad he said he wanted to hear some music, so I grabbed this big boom box and carried it upstairs and put on that music that he’d been working on and he looked at me and

he said ‘Mavis, don’t lose this’, and I’ve held onto it for 15 years - it’s been hard to hold it back but I’m so glad that it’s finally out there.”

Staples added that Tweedy, who over-saw production duties on the record as well as filling in some bass and guitar parts (with his son, Spencer, playing drums) was the only person who could tackle the project.

“Tweedy has such a beautiful personal-ity - he just cracks me up,” she enthused.

“He’s also a musical genius who knows the Staples Singers so well - he used to listen to us back when he worked in a record shop - and he knew Pops’ sound so well. Also, the fact that his son plays on the LP is just great - Pops just loved family.”

Starting life as a family gospel group in the 1950s with songs like Uncloudy Day and Will the Circle Be Unbroken however, after they met Dr Martin Luther King (with Pops developing a close friendship with the Civic Rights leader), the group moved into more “message-based” soul and R&B music, becoming one of the most pivotal musical voices of the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

“I remember the first day I met Dr King - we were in Montgomery, Alabama and we went along to his church on a Sunday morning,” she said.

“After the service, my sisters and I shook his hand, but Pops stood and talked with him for a while and that night he said to us ‘if Dr King can preach it, we can sing it’.

“Dr King was such a wonderful man - one of my strongest memories of him is his

Staples said they had more than one first-hand account of how dangerous it could be to be such vocal supporters of the Civil Rights Movement and Dr King.

“It was definitely dangerous for us - recording all of these songs but it was a dangerous time for all black people in America,” she said.

“I remember one time we were in Memphis and we were gassing up at a station and I was driving. I asked the attendant for a receipt and he was really nasty, so my father went with him inside with the man and I could see him shaking his finger in Daddy’s face, Pop socked him.

“Pops came out and told me to drive and we get to this bridge that divides up Memphis, Tennessee and west Memphis, Arkansas and all of a sudden there are flashing lights behind us and then police with shotguns and dogs. They hand-cuffed us and put us in their cars, took us to jail and all I could think was that I was going to be lynched and I would never see my mother again. The man said we’d robbed him but we had the receipt so luckily it was all straightened out - but it was the most frightening time of my life.”

So after 67 years in the business, what keeps Mavis Staples so passionate?

“It’s not like work for me at all so, that helps,” she laughed.

“But the Lord gifted me with a voice and I intend to keep using it for as long as I possibly can.”

“We didn’t see the message songs as being too far from gospel because they were telling the truth, just like gospel music, but we started using a rhythm section - before that it was just our voices and our father’s guitar - and all of a sudden the church people were saying that The Staples Singers are singing the devil’s music and we had to spend a lot of time saying that it was good music and that the devil ain’t got no music.”

Comprising the talents of Ally and Darren Gould, local duo Wicked are definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Since forming in mid-2013, Melbourne’s Laura Palmer (featuring members of Outsid-ers, Sommerset and PCP Eagles) has toured extensively around Australia and the United States including recent appearances at Big Pre-Fest in Little Ybor and THE FEST in Gainesville Florida.

The band has played and toured with bands such as Off With Their Heads, Frenzal Rhomb, Paper Arms, The Slow Death, Snuff

and many more. The debut EP arrived in June 2014 and was mixed and mastered by Brian McTernan (Converge, Hot Water Music, Polar Bear Club) at Salad Days in Baltimore.

The release has helped the band gain airplay on national radio and saw them featured as the opening track on one of the 2014 No Idea Records Fest compilations sharing their music to thousands of new fans around the world.

River Band - it’s hard to imagine anyone but him singing such tracks as Cool Change, Help Is On Its Way, Lonesome Loser et al - and responsible for such clas-sics as Arkansas Grass and Little Ray of Sunshine with the 70s supergroup Axiom (also featuring his good mate Brian Cadd), the two-time ARIA hall of fame inductee’s (once with LRB and again in his own right) influence on Australian popular music is almost immeasurable.

Now, Shorrock is joining forces with a few other legends - Brian Cadd, Joe Camilleri and Kate Ceberano for the third iteration of the ever popular AIPA Good Times tour.

“It’s always a fun time out when I get to play with Brian - he and I always have a good laugh,” Shorrock told TE.

“These tours have always been very well received and people can expect a show literally packed with hits from Brian, Joe, Kate and I but we’ll also be toying with a few ideas to keep things interesting.”

Shorrock made headlines recently after the US version of LRB (containing no original members, but owning the right to the band’s name) were booked to play on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote the band’s 40th anniversary. Shorrock wrote a letter to Jimmy Fallon stating his displeasure, in no uncertain terms which resulted in LRB being pulled from the show.

“It was a small victory,” Shorrock said.“They’ve been using our reputation

and grinding it into the dirt for years and when I heard they were spruiking this thing on Fallon, I told them - the band not Jimmy Fallon - where to go. I just wanted everyone at the show to be aware of the situation”

While his achievements with LRB are huge - they were one of the first Austral-ian bands to crack the huge US market and managed to snag eight top ten US hits, selling 25 million records - Shorrock remains philosophical on his success.

“I mean, those years were great - seven years and eight top ten hits, riding around in limos and big coaches and you do get buoyed along by that success,’ he said.

“But I think it’s important to keep your feet well and truly on the ground. It’s important not to languish in it but to accept it for what it is while still being accepting of what might come in the future.”

There is no denying that the term “Americana” is one that gets bandied about quite a bit these days - especially when referring to artists like Pokey

LaFarge. His music draws on a deep well of American music traditions, incorporat-ing elements of early western swing, jazz, ragtime and country blues however, he sees this label as a tad disingenuous.

“It’s such a broad term, these days,” LaFarge told TE.

“The word Americana started coming up when I was in high school - referring to a lot of that singer-songwriter country rock stuff like Uncle Tupelo, but these days, it’s so broad that Mumford and Sons - a band from England - get called Americana.

“I prefer to think of my music as Ameri-can.”

After a whirlwind tour of Oz last year, which included much-lauded slots at the Port Fairy Folk Music Festival and WOMADelaide, the St Louis-based multi-instrumentalist will be making a

welcome return to our shores for a slot at the Byron Bay Bluesfest and a string of headlining East Coast dates including a stop-off in Newcastle next weekend.

“Yeah, we had a really successful debut run to Australia and New Zealand and played some great festivals and it’s going to be great to be able to visit some new places on this upcoming tour.”

After releasing two solo albums - Marmalade and Beat Move and Shake in 2006 and 2008 respectively, LaFarge’s first foray with a band - The South City Three - netted him an Independent Music award for best Americana album for the 2010 Riverboat Soul set - a feat they reprised with the 2011 follow-up Middle of Everywhere. After striking up a relation-ship with Jack White and his label Third Man Records, Pokey LaFarge - now the name of the band - released the critically-acclaimed self-titled set in 2013.

On the cusp of the Australian tour, and with a newly inked deal with Rounder records, LaFarge has just released his sixth studio album Something In The Water - a set he described as his most experimental yet.

this record was definitely a lot more experimental to what I have done previ-ously,” he said.

“For example, on this record, we have drums on every song, which I’ve never done before and had introduced a strong groove element into the sound, and we’re using a lot of three and four-part harmo-

nies, which is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but just didn’t have the right people, I guess, and a lot more instrumentation.

“I just can’t wait to get out on the road to pay these new songs live.”
