The Sunnyboys gave Newcastle one hell of a blazing set last year and if you missed it, well, never fear because the iconic pop rockers are doing it all again at the Enmore Theatre next month.

The 2015 tour follows a series of sold-out east coast shows in 2013-2014, na-tional theatre release of the feature-length documentary The Sunnyboy, a live ap-pearance on ABC-TV show The Crack-Up for Mental Health Week and the deluxe re-issue of their rightly celebrated eponymous debut album.

Do you need more convincing?Well, iconic surf punks The Riptides - owners of such belters as 77 Sunset Strip,

Tomorrow Tears, Riptide, Shake It and Only Time - will be opening up proceed-ings along with The New Christs - featuring original Sunnyboys frontman and main warbler for seminal Aussie proto punks Radio Birdman, Rob Younger.

US grindcore legends Napalm Death have pretty much been at the forefront of the world of extreme music for what seems like forever now and this vicious blast - their 15th long player certainly won’t knock them off that perch.

The thing about Napalm Death, and something that comes through in spades on this record, is that this is a band that, surprisingly, knows its sonic limits. Instead of trying to cram 1000 riffs and 2000 blast beats per song like many of their peers, Napalm Death go for qual-ity over quantity. Just when you think they’re on the cusp of seeing the red mist and going completely postal, they man-age to maintain that rage, albeit in a more controlled fashion.

If you love listening to Larry Fishburne spout incomprehensible pseudo-intel-lectual psychobabble for 90-odd minutes or if the wooden acting of Keanu Reeves leaves you breathless then the first in the over-hyped franchise should be just the ticket as Reeves stars as a mild-mannered computer programmer by day and a hacker, called Neo, by night.

While there is a lot to like about this Ben Affleck thriller - namely David Fincher’s metered direction and a credible per-formance from Affleck, the meandering plot and an abruptly unsatisfying ending spoilt the flick a little. Nick Dunne (Af-fleck) reports that his wife, Amy, has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, a portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble.

ou’ve all heard the phrase “big in Japan,” right? Well it’s a phrase that can definitely be applied to legendary rockers Cheap Trick.

While they eventu-ally eclipsed this status, going on to sell 20 million records globally and becoming one of the best-loved and most enduring rock and roll bands on the planet, it was Japan, where they were known as the American Beatles, which first sat up and took notice of the band, giving their first three records - Cheap Trick, In Color and Heaven Tonight - gold record status.

Their first Japanese tour, in 1978, included two shows at the now infamous Nippon Budokan, and those shows formed the basis of one of the greatest live albums in the history of popular music, Cheap Trick at Budokan. The album, featuring blistering versions of such iconic Cheap Trick tracks as Surrender and I Want You To Want Me made the rest of the world sit up and take notice. The album became their biggest seller with a staggering three million copies.

“The funny thing about Budokan was

that it was supposed to be a Japan-only release so we didn’t think anyone was going to hear it,” guitarist Rick Nielsen told TE down the line from his Rockford, Illinois, home.

When asked what it was about the set that resonated so well with people, Nielsen remained philosophical.

“I think, honestly, that it was the beauti-ful picture of me on the back cover that did it,” he said.

“It’s funny because [website] Ultimate Classic Rock recently ran a poll pitting Cheap Trick at Budokan against Frampton Comes Alive by Peter Frampton and we got 62 per cent of the vote.

“We’re actually going out on a co-head-lining tour with Peter this year so I only hope he doesn’t read the news.”

Thirty-seven years after Budokan shot them into the stratosphere - spurred on by subsequent smash hit singles such as If You Want My Love, Dream Police and The Flame, and with more than 5000 shows under their belt, Cheap Trick are showing no signs of slowing down; a fact soon to be reinforced to Aussie punters when they touch down here next month for their first Australian tour since 2008’s hit-out with Def Leppard.

“It’s been seven years, which is just ridiculous,” Nielsen said.

thing of it is Cheap Trick has two sets of gear - the A set and the B set - and they are both great, so yeah, it’s kind of a good problem to have.”

Nielsen, who started collecting in 1965, said that while he may have found his “white whale” a while ago, he’s always on the lookout for more.

“There’s not really one I don’t own that I want to - you see I’ve been collecting since 1965 so I’ve owned a hell of a lot of guitars,’ he said. But there is one, a 1963 Guild Merle Travis, that I’d been search-ing for around 30 years. They were 2000 bucks when they came out and there are only three of them in the world, and I have one which is damn cool.

“I do like my guitars to be played, though. I don’t have them locked in glass cabinets or anything.”

With everyone from political punk band Propagandhi to other pop-rock behemoths covering Cheap Trick and citing them as a major influence, where does Nielsen see that band as sitting in the popular music landscape?

“There are a lot of bands who say that Cheap Trick influenced them in one way or another, which is cool, I just wish everyone would quit stealing form us,” he joked.”

Ever the prodigious collector, Nielsen has reportedly owned more than 2000 guitars in his lifetime, with his current collection estimated to be about 250. Does choosing a rig when heading out on the road present a problem?

“It can, but what a hell of a problem to have,” Nielsen laughed.

Karen O’Shea has been mesmerising her audiences with her amazing vocal talents since an early age. She has been working professionally in her home town of Darwin since leaving school.

From plying her trade in her home town of Darwin in the 50s and 60s covers band The Sublimes to rocking the Sydney scene in such outfits as The Temple of Groove, Sydney Sound Machine and as a backing vocalist for Richard Clapton.

She has also had the rare honour of playing at the birthday party of the Sultan of Brunei’s second wife. Not a bad gig at all.

In the 12 years or so she has been singing professionally, O’Shea has supported numer-ous artists including Randy Crawford, Wilson Pickett, James Morrison, Christine Anu, Jimmy Barnes, CBD and some of Australia’s rising country stars, and has had numerous television appearances.

Having had so many opportunities to sing a diverse range of songs, there is no doubt that Karen O’Shea could sing almost anything.

W hen it came time for Adam Harvey to start work on album number 12, he turned to a

subject close to his heart for inspiration: family.

The resulting album, Family Life, possi-bly Harvey’s most personal to date, is a heartfelt collection that features tracks about his children and his wife alongside more humorous observations on what it means to be the man of the house.

“The songs on this album came pretty easy to me,” Harvey told TE. “I find that a lot of the time the stuff that happens in real life is way better than the stuff you can make up.

“I mean, I remember sitting on the lounge with my daughter when she was a little girl wishing that one day she would grow up to be Hannah Montana, but it turns out that I’m now living with Miley Cyrus.”

Taking the family theme further, the album features a duet with his daughter Leylah on a cover of the Shel Silverstein song Daddy What If.

“It was great recording with Leylah because she’s a great source of cheap labour,” he laughed.

“But seriously, I’ve recorded duets with plenty of people over the years but this one with Leylah will be the one I remember most fondly. It was a wonder-ful experience.”

Given the fact that Harvey’s touring schedule is one that would make lesser musos baulk in fright, what is the secret of balancing life on the road with life at home?

“It can be a juggling act,” he said.“For me it’s more about making the

most of the time you do have at home . . . just general quality-time stuff. Although, when I do hit the road, my wife is usually glad to see the back of me, it’s an absence-makes-the-heart-grow-fonder situation.”

Harvey said he was already looking toward the next project.

“I’ve just come off the road with Kenny Rogers and he really inspired me to get back into writing, so once this tour is done the next project will begin and the roadshow starts all over again.”

A fter plying his trade on the Newcastle covers circuit, Lake Macquarie-based muso James

Martens has gone back to his first love of songwriting, with a new EP that will be launched at Lizotte’s next month.

The EP Judgement Day has already been getting a bit of a head start on internet radio around the globe with the southern rock-esque single Worried Man.

“It’s pretty surreal, the song is even getting played in New Jersey,” Martens told TE.

It seems Newcastle is pretty keen to catch a glimpse of Martens in action with the new crop of songs, with the launch show almost sold out.

“It’s going through the roof, which is just great, it’s almost sold out.

“It will also be the first real live hit-out for the band [Phil Boon on bass and Matt Blythe on drums] so it’s great

so see so much support out there.”Martens said that while he had been

writing his own material since he started playing guitar at 12, he wanted a fresh approach for Judgement Day.

“I’ve been writing songs for years, but I didn’t really want to use any of those.

“I wanted to work with a completely clean slate.

“The whole thing took about 12 months but recording-wise, we recorded it at Lee Rolfe’s studio in a weekend which was good because we were able to keep it really fresh and live sounding.

“It’s more about letting the music speak for itself. This is something that I definitely need to do for myself.”

Writing clean slate

H aving released her third single, Rollercoaster Life in January, rising Newcastle-based country

star Lauren Wheatley is not wasting any time making her presence felt in 2015.

Wheatley, with fellow Hunter-based artists Tara Naysmith (Cessnock), Tommy Contour (Gillieston Heights) and The Rough Diamonds (Lake Macquarie), has been voted onto the upcoming Campfire Festival bill at Hope Estate next month.

Wheatley won the slot through a fan vote.

“It really is a great way to start 2015,” Wheatley said of the festival that will see her play alongside the likes of John Butler, Lee Kernaghan and Kasey Chambers.

“But getting voted onto the bill really was the icing on the cake.“I still can’t believe all of the wonderful

support I’ve received from everyone.”Wheatley’s latest single Rollercoaster

Life is exactly that: a rollicking nouveau country tune that carries on the theme of punchy country pop-rock, tempered with some truly lush production that was all over her previous singles, Overrated and Take You Back.

“Life as a musician is full of ups and downs and that’s something I really wanted to tackle with Rollercoaster Life,” she said.

“But it’s a really upbeat and fun song which is just so much fun to play.

“We are taking our time honing the sound in the studio and at this stage we’re looking to release an EP, hopefully mid next year and then look at doing the album,” she said.
