II. Sectionalism - Disagreement between regions(North and South)

A. Missouri Compromise1) Missouri applies for statehood as a slave

state.2) U.S. currently has 11 slave and 11 free

states. Balance of power in the Senate would be disrupted.

3) Henry Clay proposes a Compromise.

3 Main Conditions of the Missouri Compromise

1. Missouri enters Union as a slave state2. Maine joins the Union as a free state3. Slavery is prohibited in any new territories or state

North of the 36° N Latitude (Missouri's southernborder)

Compromise is only a "band-aid" for the issueof Slavery. This issue will NOT go away
