As we conclude Respect Life Month and Red Ribbon Week with the Panther walk next Friday, our students will be allowed to accessorizein orange. The color orange is seasonally and thematically appropriate (Orange you glad to be drug free?), but in this situation often brings the question of whether anything Halloween-like is appropriate at our Catholic school. Ive recently come across an article published by the Archdiocese of New Orleans on this topic, and wanted to share some of the points made: The word Halloween,as most of us know, comes from the term All Hallows Eve,and simply means The Eve of All Saints Day.Because All Saints Day is one of the great Solemnities of the year, its celebration starts the night before, just as on Sundays, Christmas, etc. So the evening of October 31 st begins the joyous celebration of the amazing things God has accomplished through the lives of countless people through the centuries. Christs victory over sin and death allows the saints to be with Him in Heaven, and makes them able to intercede for us. This is indeed something to celebrate! How to appropriately celebrate Halloween has been a struggle for many Catholics. Much of the modern celebration focuses on the excitement that comes from fear and the power of death and darkness rather than the celebration of the immense power of God over death and darkness. Unfortunately, there is a temptation to buy into the Halloween excuse of diving into things that are bad for us – whether its indulging in candy & treats or the thrill of darkactivity. Certainly it is not sinful to dress up in a fun costume and collect candy from the neighbors or have an enjoyable get-together –but let us not get distracted from the true gift of the night. Perhaps we could include some celebration of the lives and intercession of the saints. The article suggests saint costumes for parties or trick-or- treating, catching a vigil Mass before you go out, or just spending some time as a family in prayer letting your kids hear you express gratitude for Gods work through a particular saint that means a lot to you. I thought these were great ways to teach children the meaning of All HallowsEve. More creative and crafty ideas can be found Faithfully Navigating HalloweenPinterest board. As we conclude Respect Life Month and Red Ribbon Week with the Panther walk next Friday, our students will be allowed to ‘accessorize’ in orange. The color orange is seasonally and thematically appropriate (Orange you glad to be drug free?), but in this situation often brings the question of whether anything Halloween-like is appropriate at our Catholic school. Strengthening Spirits...Minds...Bodies...Through The Teachings of Jesus Christ!

1536 Ryan Street, Lake Charles, LA 70601 * 433-3497 * www.iccschool.org

“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

“God always thinks with mercy: do not forget this. God always

thinks mercifully. He is the merciful Father! God thinks like the father waiting for the son and who goes to meet him when he spots him

coming when he is still far off…What does this mean? That he went every

day to see if his son was coming home: this is our merciful Father.” -Pope Francis, The Church of Mercy

Have you ever heard your elementary aged children talk about “Minute Moves,” “Dots and

Squeezes,” and “Figure 8’s?” Perhaps you have even seen them demonstrate “Cocoons” or “Cross

Crawls” for you. While there is no doubt that these funny names do not seem to fit the traditional

school setting, they are part of an innovative program based on the correlated relationship

between the brain and function of body behaviors called S’Cool Moves. At the very heart of the

program is how human sensory motor experiences in concrete form evolve to higher order

functions of abstract learning. Here again we can look back and see that the concept of sensory

integration’s link to cognitive development is not something new in education. In fact, notable

research from Ann Jean Ayers in the early 1960s helped link the cognitive development theory of

Jean Piaget in the 1930s to human sense experiences and brain development. Through various

teacher directed “S’Cool Moves,” our students are setting their Autonomic Nervous System on

course for learning, processing sensory information in a logical way, developing appropriate

academic postures, generating strength in body image, producing an awareness of laterality and

directionality and finally, preparing for the full integration of an academic setting. Wow! Now who’s

ready for some “Superman Extensions?”
