Our Lady’s 15 Promises for Praying the Rosary October is the month of the Rosary. In several Marian appa-ritions, such as Fatima in 1917, Our Blessed Mother has recommended praying the Rosary daily. Besides the Indul-gences attached to the Rosary, Our Lady revealed to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche additional benefits for those who devoutly pray the Rosary. Note that the Ro-sary is the prayer (non-liturgical) with the most published Magisterial/Papal documents expounding on its excellence. Vatican II’s summary on Our Lady is contained in Lumen Gentium Chapter VIII. 1. Whosoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation

of the Rosary shall receive signal graces. Signal Graces are those special and unique Graces to help sanctify us in our state in life. See the remaining prom-ises for an explanation for which these will consist. St. Louis de Montfort states emphatically that the best and fastest way to union with Our Lord is via Our Lady [True Devotion to Mary, Chapter IV]

2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary. Our Lady is our Advocate and the channel of all God’s Grace to us. Our Lady is simply highlighting that She will watch especially over us who pray the Rosary. (See Lumen Gentium Chapter VIII-Our Lady #62) [a great more detail is available on this topic in True Devotion to Mary, Chapter IV].

3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell; it will destroy vice, decrease sin and defeat heresies. This promise, along with the next, is simply the reminder on how fervent prayer will help us all grow in holiness by avoiding sin, especially a prayer with the excellence of the Rosary. An increase in holiness necessarily requires a reduction in sin, vice, and doctrinal errors (heresies). If only the Modernists could be convinced to pray the Ro-sary! (See Lumen Gentium Chapter V-the Call to Holi-ness #42) St. Louis de Montfort states, “Since Mary alone crushed all heresies, as we are told by the Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary)…” [True Devotion to Mary #167]

4. It will cause good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire for Eternal Things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means. This promise, along with the previous, is the positive part, that being to live in virtue. Becoming holy is not only avoiding sin, but also growing in virtue. (See Lumen Gentium Chapter V-The Call to Holiness #42.)

5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the reci-tation of the Rosary shall not perish. Since Our Lady is our Mother and Advocate, She always assists those who call on Her implicitly by praying the Rosary. The Church reminds us of this in the Memorare prayer, “...never was it known that anyone who fled to your pro-tection, implored your help or sought your intercession, was left unaided…”

6. Whosoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, apply-

ing himself to the consideration of its Sacred Mys-teries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not per-ish by an unprovided death; if he be just he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of Eternal Life. This promise highlights the magnitude of Graces that the Rosary brings to whomever prays it. One will draw down God’s Mercy rather than His Justice and will have a final chance to repent (See promise #7). One will not be conquered by misfortune means that Our Lady will obtain for the person sufficient Graces to handle said misfortune (i.e. carrying the Crosses al-lowed by God) without falling into despair. As Sacred Scripture tell us, “For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.” (Matthew 11:30)

7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die with the Sacraments of the Church. This promise highlights the benefits of obtaining the most possible Graces at the hour of death via the Sacra-ments of Confession, Eucharist, and Extreme Unction (Anointing of the Sick). Being properly disposed while receiving these Sacraments near death ensures one’s salvation (although perhaps with a detour through Pur-gatory) since a final repentance is possible.

8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the Light of God and the plenitude of His Graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the Merits of the Saints in Paradise. Our Lady highlights the great quan-tity of Graces obtained through praying the Rosary, which assists us during life and the moment of death. The merits of the Saints are the gift of God’s rewards to those persons who responded to His Grace that they obtained during life, and so Our Lady indicates that She will provide a share of that to us at death. With this promise and #7 above, Our Lady is providing the means for the person to have a very holy death.

During the month of October, the Rosary will be prayed at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception before the 4:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Mass on Sunday morning, and the 5:00 p.m. Extraordinary Form Mass on Sunday evening. Everyone is encouraged to come 30 minutes early and pray together as a parish community this beautiful and powerful prayer. As a reminder, the Ro-sary is prayed daily at the Cathedral before the noon Mass, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Additionally, we will be praying the Rosary for Holy Souls once a week at the Old Catholic Cemetery (corner of Common and Iris Streets). Landry Expansion

A building fund drive for Landry Memorial was begun in March of 1953. Dedication of the resultant new high school building marked the completion of the first major expansion at this school in almost 3 years. In the late 1960’s a decision was made to consolidate St. Charles Academy, Landry Memorial and Sacred Heart into one co-educational Catholic High School. It was a hard decision, since each school had established a fine tradition in its’ own right. Our parish became heavily committed financially, and Monsignor Louis Boudreaux gave much of his time and talent to this cause. As it turned out, the school was actu-ally named for our pastor—and his patron Saint, the King of France. St. Louis Catholic High School opened its doors in the fall of 1970.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), we will pre-sent questions taken from the Compendium, a faithful and sure synthesis of the Catechism in clear and con-cise format. What are most ancient symbols (professions) of faith? The most ancient symbols of faith are the baptismal creeds. Because Baptism is conferred “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19), the truths of faith professed at Baptism are articulated in refer-ence to the three Persons of the Most Holy Trinity. Our fellow parishioner, Elvina “Lee” Israel, died on October 5, 2019. We pray that she will find peace and joy in the presence of Our Lord. We extend our sincere sympathy to her family and all who mourn her death.

The beautiful flowers that adorned our foyer last weekend were donated by the Belaire and Terrell Families in loving memory of deceased members of the Solari Family.

Dear Cathedral Parish, Y’all are amazing and I just want to say what a pleas-ure it has been to have served at this parish. Every-one has been so nice and welcoming since my arri-val and I feel like I was truly able to get a feel for what my future ministry as a priest will look like. Spending time with the school, giving homilies, writing bulletin articles, serving at Mass, visiting the sick, and getting to know you has been more fun than work. Also, I would like to say special thank you to Fr. Rommel for his guidance and patience with me during my internship—offering advice, being a spiri-tual support, and offering helpful tips for improve-ment. As Jesus told his disciples, “take my yoke upon you and learn from me…for my yoke is easy and my burden light.” The assignment was work, but because Christ was in the people I served and Christ is the reason I serve, the work was a joy. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM A Pre-Baptism class must be attended before the celebration of Baptism. These classes are held the 4th Tuesday of Janu-ary, March, May, July, September and November. Arrange-ments for celebration of Baptism may be made by calling the parish office after having attended the Baptism Class. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Arrangements should be made at least six (6) months be-fore the wedding date by calling the parish office. An appoint-ment must be made for a pre-marriage interview. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS. An ongoing process of formation and education is pro-vided for anyone who is interested in inquiring into the Roman Catholic faith. The RCIA process is available throughout the year to those who are seeking initiation into the church as well as for those non Catholics seeking more information about the Roman Catholic church. UPCOMING SESQUICENTENNIAL EVENTS

Mr. Robert Marcantel and the Cathedral Chorale would like to thank everyone who made our concert last week a great success: Our pastor, Fr. Rommel Tolentino and the Cathedral staff, as well as the mem-bers of our Sesquicentennial Committee; Andrea Prejean and crew for the help with our wonderful reception; to Janet Stoma and Vince and Paulette Lupo for their help with the gifts for the past music directors and organists who were honored that night. Extreme expressions of gratitude go to Mr. Mark Robertson who went above and beyond the call of duty so that our concert could be re-corded. The director would like to personally thank our organist, Mrs. Marlene Mullenix and all the members of the Cathedral Chorale who worked very hard under diffi-cult circumstances to make our concert successful, as well as all of the instrumentalists who were part of our chamber orchestra. We would also like to thank all those who helped with publicity for our concert: KPLC, the Lake Charles American Press, John Guidroz, Pam Seal and Gary Shannon. Most of all, we would like to thank God that this evening was such a great spiritual blessing to all who attended. It was a night that many people will be talking about for years to come!

Bread or Stones Improving the l ives of children in Louisiana...together

On Sunday, October 20, the 9:30 a.m. Mass at the Ca-thedral has been designated as the Children’s Sabbath, designed to call attention to the fact that one in every four children in Louisiana lives in poverty. Our Cathedral Par-ish commits to improving child wellbeing by our Fruitful Sunday campaign. The fourth Sunday of every month our parishioners are encouraged to bring canned fruit and leave them in the basket in the foyer of the Day Chapel. Jesus said "Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone?" (Mt. 7:9) The Bread or Stones Campaign is a coalition of congregations through-out the state of Louisiana who aspire to answer God's call to improve the lives of children. While one church/congregation cannot do it alone we know that through a concerted effort to work with one another we can insure that all of God's children grow up to be the healthy, ful-filled generous and happy women and men that the Lord sees in them. Pastoral Council Update

The 4 nominees for the Cathedral Pastoral Council elec-tion are: Stephen Broussard, Jeanne Delahoussaye, Peggy Kelley, and Aric Pohorelsky. A photograph and brief biography is inserted again in today’s bulletin. The nominees will be voted on by our registered parishion-ers over the age of 18 at all the Masses on the weekend of October 19-20. For those travelling that weekend, early vot-ing will be October 14-18 in the church office. Parishioners may vote only once. The two individuals who receive the highest number of votes will be elected to the Pastoral Council. Our next clean up day at the Old Catholic Cemetery on the corner of Common and Iris Streets will be next Satur-day, October 19, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Drinking water will be furnished as well as bags for the refuse. Bring gloves and your favorite mosquito repellent! On Friday, October 25, our Old Catholic Cemetery will be among the four historic cemeteries featured in the Living History Cemetery Tour from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The four cemeteries will be: Bilbo Cemetery, Catholic Cemetery, Combre Memorial Park, and Sallier Cemetery. Tickets cost $20.00 for adults, $15.00 for Seniors. Age 12 and under are free when accompanied by adult ticke-tholder. ICCS celebrated the October Birth-day Mass on Fri-day, October 4. Special thanks to Father Rommel, D e a c o n S a m Bond, our cantors, musicians and 8B class for leading the Mass. After Mass, the

annual ICCS Animal Blessing, a school tradition our stu-dents (and pets) look forward to every year, was held at the school on the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi.

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral School Rosary Club has been around for over 30 years. Rosary Club members meet on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 a.m. at ICCS to pray the rosary before school starts. All ICCS students in Pre-K through 8th Grade are wel-come to participate. This special group is led by our Director of Religious Education, Mrs. Rose Viau and Kindergarten Aide, Mrs. Nancy Bellon.
