ROGER BANSEMER is a prolific painter and author of eight books whose works are known internationally. He is a versatile and insightful artist with a career spanning five productive decades. Roger’s paintings cover a wide spectrum from earlier abstract works to the present day representational paintings of landscapes, shorebirds, wildlife, beachscapes, and nautical themes. Roger is also an accomplished videographer and teacher. He and his wife Sarah, produce a TV series for PBS called “Painting & Travel with Roger & Sarah Bansemer.” Viewers who like nature, art and travel love hearing the master painter describe the painting process while watching his work evolve in each new location complete with Sarah’s scenic travelogue. The series airs nationwide on 175 PBS television stations.

Bansemer has been the guest of two expeditions to the Titanic and made the two-and-a-half mile dive in a Russian submersible. Roger was the 112th person to dive to the stricken ship and the first artist ever to have done paintings at the site over Titanic. His experience has resulted in a book filled with artwork and narrative with a foreword by filmmaker James Cameron.

Roger’s work can be seen at a Bansemer Studio or web gallery. www.PaintingAndTravel.com

st. augustine,

To get the feel of the historic district, set out on foot or bicycle to explore the brick paved streets laid out in orderly fashion. The area is peppered with fascinating landmarks and an eclectic mix of architecture, from colonial dwellings with inner courtyards and Victorian houses painted in candy store colors, to community churches that have survived for generations.

Prepare to be charmed by lively dramatic re-enactors who bring history to life and teach us new lessons of how our nation has survived. After all, St. Augustine was founded by Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565, 450 years ago — long before Plymouth Rock—and is the oldest continually occupied settlement in America.

It’s the sight of Spanish conquistadors, American Indians and colonial citizens in authentic dress as they tell tales of their struggles that make this city the most fascinating in America.

Welcome to St. Augustine, a cultural melting pot with a vibrant historic past. Its ties to Spain and Europe are so rich and exciting that they nearly overshadow the area’s natural beauty.

Besides exploring the Old City, follow our tips for enjoying the outlying areas, including world class golf, year-round fishing and fantastic surfing and water sports.

The area has more than 100 parks for hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking. Create family memories while watching the children build a sand castle, fish off a pier, or take a pontoon boat tour on a placid waterway.

Romantics will be swept away by cozy bistros with inner courtyards, urbane wine bars and all the many facets of nightlife in this city. Ramble to your heart’s content, be entertained at a cozy piano bar, or dance to the music of the night.

activities in the st. augustine area

After you’ve soaked up the Old City’s ambiance, you won’t have to venture far for surfing, parasailing, jet skiing, sailing or windsurfing on Anastasia Island or Ponte Vedra, or swim with the Dolphins at Marineland.

Hiking up 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse, the oldest navigational site in North America, is worth the view. After seeing the expanse of azure water that surrounds the area, you will understand why fishing is a year ‘round sport here.

Saltwater and freshwater fishing are minutes from the historic district. Hang out at a local bait shop to soak up the local lore about “the big one that got away.”

Along the Matanzas River, family operated fishing resorts offer complete setups, renting pontoon boats and skiffs as well as tackle, if you didn’t bring your rod. Locals are eager to give tips on inshore saltwater fishing near feeder creeks and oyster bars off the main channel where they catch black drum, tarpon and mangrove snapper.

Deep-sea charters will take you trolling for wahoo, tuna and marlin, or hop on a party boat to fish for redfish, speckled trout and flounder.

Whether you’re in top form or just a weekend golfer, there’s a local golf course with gently rolling fairways for you to try. Courses have been designed by such world champions as Sam Sneed, Gene Sarazen, Arnold Palmer and Jack

Nicklaus. And for a golfer’s paradise, visit the World Golf Hall of Fame.

More than 100 parks are the area’s treasures, retreats for nature lovers and reminders of how ancient Indian civilizations lived off the land for thousands of years. Spend a morning biking, hiking, canoeing or kayaking, and you’ll feel far removed from the rush of the city.

Just for fun, how about wine tasting or end the day with a ghost tour —with 450 years of history, didn’t you expect some mysteries?

All manatees, also known as sea cows, are herbivores and aquatic relatives of the elephant.

You will find them locally in our warmer 68° spring waters in the winter.

They migrate as far north as the Carolinas in the summer, and in recent years as far north

as Cape Cod.

These gentle creatures use their front flippers to help them steer through shallow rivers. Their flat tail is powerful and propels them through the water. Today our manatee population is estimated to be approximately 5,000 individuals.

The Florida manatee is Florida’s state marine mammal

shopping st. augustine area

Your shopping instinct may motivate you to take

home a reminder of your visit, be it jewelry or clothing.

Whatever you desire, the shopping experience in St.

Augustine will reward you with outstanding selections.

Wander leisurely through the historic district’s

specialty shops and stop for lunch or a praline. It’s all part

of letting the cares of the world pass you by.

Avid collectors gravitate to the Old City and the

antique district for nautical artifacts, old maps and fine

cutlery prized by collectors. If your taste runs to imported

English and French antiques, or Victorian and Edwardian

linens and china,

specialty shops carry an

excellent assortment.

Not only is the

St. Augustine area

a fantastic place for

antique hunting, it’s

also the place to find

sophisticated accent

pieces and stained glass

that will redirect the

focus of a room.

Besides an

abundance of

yesterday’s treasures,

you’ll find the latest

in resort wear and

precious gemstone

jewelry here too. Look

for the hottest tropical

fashions in beach

boutiques and check

out the outlet malls for your favorite signature labels.

Even more fun, prepare for a day on the beach with a

new pair of bejeweled sandals or a trendy cover-up. You’ll

find a fantastic assortment of swim suits for the whole

family, plus surf boards, skimmers, sand toys for the little

ones and sunglasses to keep the sun out of your eyes.

While you have the time, stroll through the fine art

and contemporary photography galleries. You may find

the perfect memento of your vacation. Sometimes the best

part of shopping is to bask in the glow of knowing you

have made just the right choice.

SStrolling through the Old City or playing in the sun can build up an appetite. Not to worry, because dining out is another great part of being here.

Whatever your hunger has a taste for, you have a lot of choices in St. Augustine. From urban cuisine, to a Key West-style grill or unique tapas selections, your pallet is guaranteed to be pleased.

For a city of its size, St. Augustine offers exceptionally delicious fare, a combination of available fresh ingredients and the freestyle imagination of accomplished chefs.

st. augustine diningWhether you want a romantic

dinner for two that is paired with a fine wine, or a frosty brew at the locals favorite beach grill serving fresh-catch Florida seafood the way you like it and thick clam chowder, we have restaurants you will love.

Some offer casual meals with a view of a marina, the Atlantic Ocean or the Intracoastal. Whenever you dine overlooking the water, it’s a great way to unwind.

Speaking of views, after taking the tour at our local winery, you can sit on the rooftop and relax with a bottle of wine and enjoy items from their smaller portion menu. Or enjoy a steak on a garden patio at a Victorian home.

Crispy fried shrimp and down-home Southern favorites are part of the lifestyle near the coast, and

your meal will be served to please your eye as much as your appetite.

The Old City’s vintage buildings sparkle with lights just as the sun is setting. Jazz cafes and piano bars with golden light spilling out into the street invite you to step inside and enjoy the music.

Indulge in a dessert crafted by a French chef or chocolatier and a romantic carriage ride through the historic neighborhoods. The clip-clop of the horses’ hooves is the height of romance in St. Augustine.

FFrom the moment you feel the sand under your toes, the upbeat energy of Daytona Beach will captivate your heart. The sun shines on 23 miles of coastline, a stretch of golden beaches with a wide range of sporting activities from bicycling to deep-sea fishing, the best that Florida has to offer.

We’ll help you discover the hot spots, the best places to shop, eat and dance the night away in Daytona Beach as well as our neighboring communities of Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet.

From flying a kite to building a sandcastle with the family, you’ll find our beaches are great places for playing in the sun or under the moon. It’s all part of the local landscape that we share with visitors.

Whether you prefer leisurely strolls or more vigorous walks and action-packed days, you’ll soon feel at home with our tips for outdoor fun, local eating establishments and the best bargains.

We welcome one and all, and our wide range of visitors proves just why this friendly seacoast is among America’s favorites.

In our seaside neighborhoods, there are kid-friendly mini parks with slides, swings and multi-layered play structures to explore. Best of all, children of all ages like to cool off in the splash fountains designed to delight and refresh.

If you are looking for adventure, consider a kayak or canoe to paddle the quiet coastal waterways among pines and palmettos. Experience the thrill of parasailing, rent a personal watercraft or cruise down the Intracoastal.

There’s so much to do, from strolling the boardwalk to playing championship golf, that it will be hard to decide what to do first.

At the end of the day, settle down with a tall iced beverage while you watch the last rays of a Florida sunset. Whatever your lifestyle, you can do it all here.

activities in the daytona beach area

OOnce you’ve spent some time in the sun and relaxed, chances are you’re ready for high spirited fun.

For some, that’s grabbing a surf board for the best surfing on the Eastern Seaboard. But you can also rent a personal watercraft or learn to soar above the crowd on a parasail.

If fishing is your game, the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River and the estuaries along the Intracoastal all provide excellent fishing challenges. Anglers can enjoy a full-day charter of deep-sea fishing or a short freshwater trip that the whole family will enjoy.

Discover our historic

landmarks, climb Florida’s

tallest lighthouse at Ponce

Inlet, explore the ruins of

an early sugar mill or visit

the ballpark where Jackie

Robinson played in the first

integrated Major League

spring training game in 1946.

Beyond the beach are the

lush fairways of our world-

class golf courses, one reason

the area is rated one of the

top golfing destinations in

the world.

Don’t forget, we’re the

birthplace of speed and

one of the few places that

allows driving on the beach.

The Daytona International

Speedway offers tours, and

to satisfy your need for

excitement, let loose and

take the wheel at a go-kart park and experience the thrill

of taking the turns at top speed.

Not far inland you’ll find air boat rides, sparkling

springs perfect for a refreshing dip and the charming

town of Deland. Our wildlife preserves, safe havens for

waterfowl and migrating birds, are places where only the

splash of a canoe or kayak paddle breaks the stillness.

And before you leave, try to fit in simple pleasures.

Ride a bike along the dunes, attend a seasonal art show

or heritage festival—our area’s full of unexpected fun.

UNDER THE WINTER SUN

Sun protection is important during the winter even if it feels cool on the beach. Always wear sunblock of at least SPF 15

broad spectrum or higher. Give attention to the tops of your ears, lips and the back

of your neck…we don’t want over exposure to interrupt your fun vacation plans.

Wear a wide brim hat and shades that have UV protection…yes, even in the

summer, spring and fall!

turtle nesting seasonbegins in May, runs through October

The yellow markers and netting mean a sea

turtle has deposited her eggs in the sand!

All sea turtles are endangered, but

Loggerheads are most commonly seen on

our beaches. Hatchlings—only about 2 inches

long—wait until the sand cools at night before

scrambling to the water where they spend

several years in floating beds of seaweed.

Green turtles and huge Leatherbacks also

nest on Florida shores. Turtles don’t reach

maturity for 15 to 50 years. Scientists believe

that only 1 in 1,000 to 10,000 babies will survive

to adulthood.

Don’t disturb a turtle that is crawling on the

beach or laying eggs. Watch from a distance of

at least 30 feet.

Avoid shining lights on the beach at night as

this may frighten nesting females and confuse

the hatchlings’ ability to find the sea.

For more information call Volusia County

Environmental Management Division. For West

Volusia 386-736-5927, for Daytona Beach

386-254-4612 and for New Smyrna Beach

386-423-3303.

In the event of a turtle stranding

shopping in the daytona

beach area

NNo vacation is quite complete until you’ve been shopping. From beach boutiques to specialty shops, the stores around Daytona Beach are casually sophisticated and trendy.

What catches your eye everywhere you look is our colorful collection of stores offering everything from beach garb to trend conscious apparel, jewelry and accessories. Our island style favors fabrics in bright tropical patterns or breezy silk. It’s all part of being relaxed, letting the cares of the world pass you by.

Life is good when you can choose between high-end designer names and unbelievable bargains. Whatever your personal style, our specialty is equipping you for your day to explore and play. You’ll find an amazing selection of swim suits for the whole family, plus body boards, skimmers, sand toys and hats to shade your face.

On Atlantic Avenue (A1A), browse fun shops for original souvenirs and accessorize your purchase with our incredible selection of sandals. And don’t forget to pick up sunscreen to work on that tan without burning.

There’s even more to see off the beaten path on the mainland and in seaside neighborhoods. Browse through Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach shops. Spend a little time in Daytona Beach’s downtown shopping district at Beach Street’s Riverfront Shops, a mix of art deco, new and historic buildings. Wander leisurely through smart, attractive shops and stop for lunch or an icy drink at a sidewalk café. Flip through this guide for shopping ideas.

local dininga world of dining choices

CConnoisseurs may seek out a fine wine cellar and a gourmet meal served at a candlelit table overlooking the water. But if you are in a more casual state of mind, wear your flip flops and dine on fresh caught seafood at one of our outdoor dockside restaurants.

Florida seafood ordered the way you like it, sautéed, broiled or blackened, is a savory specialty no matter what your budget. From the ever-popular grouper sandwich served in a basket to succulent shrimp scampi, the extraordinary selections will exceed even your highest expectations.

Florida has culinary roots in Spanish

and Caribbean dishes that mix savory

herbs and fresh ingredients like mango,

avocado and peppers. But southern

cooking traditions are also strong in

Florida, tempting all your down-home

taste buds. Barbeque that’s slow cooked

for hours, golden cornbread and crisp

hush puppies are specialties that many

of our restaurants serve with pride.

We also offer romantic dinner

cruises and funky themed restaurants.

The ambience of your surroundings,

including the presence of visitors from

around the world, enhances your

dining pleasure. Waterfront views are

everywhere, from simple eateries serving

picnic-table style to restaurants with

linen table cloths high above the surf.

In the afternoon, island style drum

beats revitalize you while you linger in

the shade of an umbrella. Stroll along the

boardwalk and listen to music carried by the sea breeze

from inviting pubs with outdoor tables.

When the day has ended, and dessert is on the

table, take a moment to reflect on another perfect day

in paradise.

Whether you are here for a weekend or longer, dining

out is an important part of your vacation. One of the great

things about the Daytona Beach area is the wide range of

restaurants offering tantalizing cuisine.

Key Lime Pie is a creamy, sweet dessert with a fresh taste that tingles on your tongue. It originated back in the 19th century in Key West. Made with the juice of tart, thin skinned, yellow Key limes and sweetened condensed milk,

it has many variations, including meringue topping. The availability of authentic Key lime juice has allowed this

regional dessert to spread far beyond Florida.
