Excerpts from Courtney’s application:

In your favorite children’s movie, who was your personal role model? How did

this person influence you to be successful?

My personal role model would be Mulan, from the Disney movie. Mulan defied the stereotypical “girl” role that was expected of her and embraced who she truly was…a warrior! She knew that she could do anything that boys could do.

Likewise, competing in the “boys’ world” of agriculture or even competing on the shotgun team takes grit and willingness. I knew that I could not only com-pete with but exceed my male counterparts. Just like Mulan, I stay true to who

I believe I am, not what others expect me to be.

This week’s Teacher’s Spotlight shines on Mrs. Josi Lewis. Mrs. Lewis has been at PHS for a total of six years. She spent three years teaching,

and has spent three additional years being the PHS guidance counselor. When asked what made her decide to be a guidance counselor, she responds, “I love working with students and helping them with their future goals after graduating from high school! It

is very rewarding! (It can also be very challenging!)” In her spare time Mrs. Lewis enjoys reading, playing with her dogs, and she also enjoys fishing with her husband. Mrs. Lewis is enjoying her experience of being a first time mother. She says, “It is the best, hardest thing I have ever done! It is definitely life changing; where before, I could

go and do whatever I wanted, now I have Baylie Anne to think about! She has changed my life, but in the best way possible! Joseph and I are very blessed and love her so much!” Mrs. Lewis is getting ready to finalize next year’s master schedule and after

taking a few short trips this summer, plans to be busy getting ready for the next school year. Mrs. Lewis will be welcoming the incoming freshmen to Hornet Prep Camp each day July 21-23, and school starts for everyone August 3. Thank you for all you do for Pelham High School, Mrs. Lewis!

Johnathon Leggett and Yakarri Florence Join the U.S. Navy

Two more of Pelham High School seniors, Yakarri Florence and Johnathon Leggett, went to Jacksonville, Florida to the MEP Stat ion to get processed for Military enlistment for the U.S. Navy. While there, both of their days consisted of physi-

cal testing as well a blood and urine test. Yakarri and Johnathon both described their day at MEPS as being long and boring. Yakarri felt scared and nervous

throughout the day saying, “We were being yelled at very harshly as soon as we got off the bus. The rest of the day was just full of chaos. I had to endure some of the stuff, but in the end it was all worth it.” For Johna-

thon, he basically described his day as going through nothing but paperwork. Being that he had been 3 times, he said it was kind of boring. After qualifying,

they went to pick their jobs. Neither one of them got the jobs they wanted, but were satisfied with what job

they picked. Yakarri chose Aviation Orientation which requires taking weapons/missiles and connecting them to an aircraft. As for Johnathon, his job

is an (AG) Aerographer’s Mate. “An AG is basically the Navy’s Yolanda Amadeo, which requires focusing on Meteorology and Oceanography.” Yakarri ships out on July 13, 2015, and Johnathon ships out on August 5, 2015. Congratulations to our future Navy Sailors for taking on a big role to defend our country. We wish you both the best of luck with your careers!

This week’s best friends are freshman Angelica Cason and De’ Ambernique Franklin. Most people around the school know them as “Amber” and

“Jelly.” Amber and Jelly have been best friends for four and a half years. “We’ve known each other since elementary school, but we became close in the sixth grade,” explains Amber. “I like everything about her, her laugh, style, loyalty,

honesty, and consistency. I can tell her anything without her telling anyone. She doesn’t judge me, but she tells me right from wrong and pushes me to be the best I can be.” Cheerleading, talking, shopping, and hanging out are some things that they enjoy doing together. “She’s

always there for me,” says Jelly. “She supports me in everything I do and I know I can tell her any and everything.” Amber and Jelly agree their most memorable moment with each other is the time they went

six flags last summer. “Her glasses fell off while we were on the roller

coaster,” said Jelly. They said that the perfect day spent with each other would be at the beach, fun park, or just in each other’s presence.

Who would take both AP Lit and 1101 Accel their Senior year in high school? Believe it or not, JaJuan Frazier, Savanna Tinsley, and Jessie Adams

(Honor Graduates of the PHS Class of 2015) did, and they have some words of wisdom to share about WHY they decided to take both classes. Ja-

Juan Frazier says he chose to take both classes because he wanted to take a challenge and push himself. “The classes are completely opposites of

each other because in British literature, you do a lot of reading and discussing and test taking, but in 1101, the main focus is writing. The combina-

tion of both has helped me feel more confident about college classes. I plan on attending Valdosta State University and major in Marketing and minor

in Human Resources Management. “ Savanna Tinsley says, “Of course, just taking AP British literature or just English 1101 would have been

the easier route. I chose to take both classes because if I do pass the AP exam, and I have Eng. 1101 credit, that is two college credits, FREE! It does not get much better than that since I can take them in the comfort of my own school.” Savanna plans to attend ABAC, then transfer to UGA. She says,

“Overall, I feel very ecstatic of what the future has in store.” Jessie Adams says he chose to take AP literature so he would have a chance at

exempting a college literature class, but when he found out about the free college class, he decided to do both. He says, “The AP class was more about reading and the college class is more about writing. I doubt I’ll pass the AP exam, but I really don’t need to since I have college credit for 1101.” Jessie plans to go to ABAC and study Economics. We wish you the very best and have no doubt you are prepared for the next level. Congrat-

ulations!
