DESCRIPTIONOFSCHOOLANDCOMMUNITYHorotiuSchoolisafullstate,co-educationalprimarysituatedinasemi-ruralcommunity10kmnorthofHamilton.Theschoolhasastrongconnectionwithlocaliwi,thatisTeRoheōWaikato,andthewider-community.Our1Julyrollnumberisusuallybetween220-240,withapproximately50%European,49%Māori,1%Other.OurchildrenaresplitbetweenHorotiu,HuntlyandNgāruawāhia,withasmallnumbercomingfromHamilton.Weareafamilyorientatedschoolwithgenerationalconnections,providingaphysicallyandemotionallysafeenvironmentforourlearners.Allstudentshaveequalaccesstolearningopportunitiesregardlessofability,gender,raceandpersonalcircumstances.Weprovideabalancedandengagingcurriculumforourlearners.HistoryoftheSchoolHorotiuSchoolactuallybeganasPuketeSchoolin1879,situatednearthecornerofwhatisnowknownasBernRoad.In1909theschoolwasburntdown,anditwaseightyearsbeforeanotherpermanentschoolbuildingwasbuilt.In1917,anewtwo-classroomschoolwaserectedonthepresentsite.In1992,the“oldblock”wasmovedtoTurangawaewaeMarae,andanewJuniorBlockarrived.Additionalclassroomsarrivedin93/94,withthelatestclassbuiltonsiteattheendof2003.Atthebeginningof2003ourAdministrationAreawasupgraded.Thiswasfollowedbyanewschoolhall,libraryandeighthclassroom.In2006theschooladdedasportsshed,seniorplayground/fitnesstrailandinstalledanall-weathernetball/basketballcourt.Renovationstothepoolarea,juniorplaygroundandmostrecentlynewscootertrack,havealsobeencompletedwithinthelastdecade.TheschoolhasrecentlyinitiateditsjourneytowardsdevelopingILEpedagogiesandphysicalconstructionoflearningcommunitieswereinitiatedbetweenAugust2016andDecember2018.WearehopingtohaveworkscompletedontheYear5&6learningcommunityin2019.SchoolDescriptionHorotiuSchoolisafullstate,co-educationalprimarysituated10kmnorthofHamilton.Our1Julyrollnumberisusuallybetween210-255,withapproximately50%European,45%Māori,5%Other.OurchildrencomefromHorotiuandNgaruawahia,withasmallnumbercomingfromHamilton.Theschoolhasonsiteaswimmingpoolandchangingsheds,anadventureplayground,ashadedsandpit,aseniorresourceroom,juniorandseniorplaygrounds,newAstroTurf,scootertrack,radiostationandanall-weathernetballcourt.StaffingTheschoolisfortunatetohaveadedicatedstaff,whoshowagenuinecommitmenttothelearningandwell-beingofallthechildrenintheircare.Thisyearwehave11full-timeteachingstaffandtwopart-timeteachers.Wealsohavefiveteacheraides,acaretaker,kaiawhinaandanamazingofficemanager.WealsohaveaccesstoaResourceTeacherofLearning&BehaviourandaresidentSocialWorker.Inaddition,weenjoysupportfromthePublic

HealthNurse,thePoliceEducationOfficer,Speech/LanguageTherapists,Hearing/VisionTherapists,DentalTechnicians,SpecialEducationService,TruancyServiceandtheChildrenandOrangaTamariki.BoardofTrusteesTheHorotiuBoardofTrusteescomprises5parentalmembers,astaffrepresentativeandthePrincipal.TheschooliswellsupportedbytheBoardofTrusteesandcaregivers/communitymembersarewelcometoattendmeetings.Weareprogressive,forwardthinkingandstrategicwithhowwedeliverthecurriculumtothechildrenatourschool.Weplacegreatemphasisondoingtheverybestthatispossibleforthechildren,andfromthiscomesinnovation,highstandards,andexcellence.Wesethighpersonalacademic,sporting,andculturalandbehavioralexpectationsforourchildren,andstrivetoensureourchildrenachievesuccessinallareas.Asaschool,wehavedistinctfocusareas,whichguideourcurriculumandprovideascaffoldforourfuturelearningsuccess.Thesehavebeendevelopedthroughconsultationwithourcommunity,theBOT,theMOEandviaresearchonwhatskillslearnerswillneedtobesuccessfulinthefuture.Overthepastfewyearstherehavebeensignificantdevelopmentsincludingteacherinvolvementinprofessionaldevelopmentrelatingtoinformationandcommunicationtechnologies(ICT),andteachingpracticesthatareresponsivetotheculturalneedsanddiversityofstudents;theschoolhasimplementedPB4LandisintheprocessofimplementingKaHikitia.HorotiuSchoolpromotesthebehaviourvalues,skillsandattitudesalignedtothe3B’s: BeaPositiveRoleModel BeanActiveLearner BeRespectfulTheschoolenvironmentisfullyinclusivewherechildrendemonstrateopen,caringandfriendlyrelationships.

ICTANDE-BLENDEDLEARNINGThereisastrongfocusatHorotiuSchooltoeffectivelyintegratetheuseoftechnologytoincreasestudentengagementandachievement.TheBoardofTrusteesiscommittedtofurtherdevelopmentstogrowtheschool’sITcapacityandcapabilitiesasweworkthroughthenewDigitalLiteracyCurriculum.WedopromoteubiquitouslearningandhaveacoupleofBYOD(bringyourowndevice)podsintheseniorschool.Wedoaskthatparentsletusknow,ifwearenotabletopublishpicturesoftheirchildrenthroughdigitalplatforms.FamiliesarealsorequiredtosignaICTuseragreementtosupportcybersafety.Thisisacontractbetweentheschoolandthestudentaskingthattheyfollowcertainrulesabouttheappropriateuseoftechnology.SCHOOLBOARDANDPARENTSUPPORTGROUPParents/Caregiversareavitalpartofourschool.WehaveaveryactiveParentSupportGroup-FriendsoftheSchool,andtheHuiāwhānauforumwhichseekstoengageinmeaningfulconsultationandcollaborationwiththeparent-community.Parentsandwhānauareinvolvedinmanywaysincludingfundraising,coachingandmanagingschoolsportsteams,andassistingonschooltripsandschoolcamps.

BoardofTrusteesTheHorotiuBoardofTrusteescomprises5parentalmembers,astaffrepresentativeandtheprincipal.TheschooliswellsupportedbytheBoardofTrusteesandcaregiver’s/communitymembersarewelcometoattendmeetingsaslongaspriornoticeisprovided.TheBoardistheofficiallinkbetweentheschool,theschoolcommunityandtheMinistryofEducation.TheBOTsupportthePrincipalintheeffectivegovernanceandmanagementoftheschool.BOTElectionswillbeheldinJune2019.
STAFFINGANDSTUDENTROLLTheschoolisfortunatetohaveastablestaff,whoshowagenuinecommitmenttothelearningandwell-beingofallthechildrenintheircare.Thisyearwehaveninefull-timeteachingstaffandfourpart-timeteachers.Wealsohavesixteacheraides,acaretakerandaschoolsecretarywhoisemployedinafull-timecapacity.WealsohaveaccesstoaResourceTeacherofLearning&Behaviour(RTLB).WealsohavethesupportofaresidentSWiSorSocialWorkerinSchools.TheschoolusesoutsideagenciesandreceivesassistancefromthePublicHealthNurse,thePoliceEducationOfficer,Speech/LanguageTherapists,Hearing/VisionTherapists,DentalTechnicians,SpecialEducationService,TruancyServiceandtheChildrenandYoungPersonsService.
FINANCE,BUILDINGSANDGROUNDS:Theschoolisinasoundfinancialposition.InaccordancewithBOTandMOEmandatestheschoolwillinitiateitsjourneytowardsbeinganinnovativelearningenvironmentin2017-2020,withchangeslikelyacrosstheschool.

HorotiuSchoolhasanimpressivepropertyfootprint.Amplehard-courtandgrassedareasprovidesuitableplay-areas.Theschoolhasnineclassrooms,whichincludesautilityroomfundedbytheBoardofTrustees.Amodernadministrationareaiswarmandinvitingandamagnificentschoolhalliswellutilisedforarangeofschoolandcommunityactivities.Ajuniorreadingresource/ReadingRecoveryroomisattachedtothejuniorblock.Otherbuildingsincludealibrary,officesfortheprincipalandsecretary,interviewroomandastaffroom.Theschoolhasonsitearevampedswimmingpoolandchangingsheds,anadventureplayground,acoveredsandpit,aseniorresourceroom,newjuniorandseniorplaygrounds,andanall-weathernetballcourt.COMMUNITYPrideintheschoolbythelocalcommunityisveryevident.Thisisprobablymostobviousthrougheventslike;Gala,theCommunityRaftRace,CulturalFestival,WakaKoopapaRegatta,Ki-o-rahitournament,AnnualHangi,SportingFixtures,AgriculturalDaysandthehighvolumeoftrafficinandoutofschoolonadailybasis.TheMaaoricommunityisalsoactivelyinvolvedwiththeschool,includingassistingwithTikangaMāoriactivitiesatourlocalMarae,TūrangawaewaeandWaikeri.Thereisalsoarichkapahakaprogramme,wakakoopapateamsandtheannualculturalfestivalwhichisahugeevent.Ourstudentsaretypicallyconfidentandhappyintheschoolenvironment,anddisplaygreattrustandaffectiontowardsthestaff.InrecentyearsourlearnershaveenjoyedvictoriesintheWaikatoPoliceTrainingChallenge,WaikatoAmazingRace,WakaKopaparacesandlocalclustersportsexchanges.
Parents,CaregiverandWhanauParents/Caregiversshowarealinterestinthelearning,progressandachievementoftheirchildren.Theschool’scurriculumisdesignedtoassistandpreparestudentsaslife-longlearners.Teacher’sstructureprogramstocaterfortheneedsoftheirstudents,enablingthemtoreachtheirfullestpotential.HorotiuSchoolcanofferanewfamily:

ClusterGroupOurchildrenparticipateinsportswiththeWesternWaikatoRuralSchoolsClusterandHeWakaekeNoaCommunityofLearningactivity.Schoolscomprisingthisclusterare:Horotiu,Rotokauri,TeKowhai,TeMata,TeRapa,TeUku,Waitetuna,WhatawhataandRaglan.Weenjoyawidevarietyofsportingactivitiesthroughouttheyear.WearealsoinvolvedwiththeNgaruawahiaPrincipal’sAssociationthroughwhichweparticipateinaYear7&8ExtensionProgramaswellasothersportingactivities.AbsencesParentsorguardiansareexpectedtoinformtheschoolofallabsencesbytelephone/text(0278299010).Thesecallsshouldbereceivedbefore9.00am.Parentswithoutatelephonewillbeexpectedtodeliverawrittennoteofexplanationtotheschooleitheronthefirstdayofabsence(viaa“buddy”)orhaveanotedeliveredtotheclassteacheronthedayorreturn.Parents/guardiansofchildrenwhoseabsencehasnotbeenexplainedwillbecontactedbytheschooloffice.However,insomecasestheTruancyOfficerwillbeadvisedandberequestedtocallatthehomeonbehalfoftheschool.

ACCIDENTSANDSICKCHILDRENMedicalRoomAnadequatestockoffirstaiditemsisreadilyavailableinthemedicalroom.Thisincludesacurrentfirstaidmanual,alistofpupilconditions,icepacksandanasthmatreatmentkit.AllteachershaverecentlycompletedFirstAidTraining.(2018-19)Medication Atenrolmenttime,parentsareaskedtogiveanyinformationonmedicationstudentsmayberequiredtotakebutovertimethismaychange.Theschoolshouldbeadvisedthrougheithertheteacherortheofficeifthereisachangeornewmedicationisneeded.Anystudentsbringingmedicationtoschoolareaskedtoleavetheitemsattheofficeandstafftherewillensuremedicationistakenatappropriatetimes.Studentsarenotpermittedtotakemedicationfromstaffwithoutparentalapprovalandthisneedstobesenttoschoolwhentheneedarises.Alsoonenrolment,parentsareaskediftheofficestaffmayissuePanadoltostudentswhooccasionallyreportpainorrequestaPanadoltablet.WewillnotissuePanadolwithoutpermissionandifyourpositiononthischangesafterenrolment,pleaselettheofficeknoweitherinwritingorbyphone.LogbookAlogbookiskepttorecordalltreatmentsotherthanmattersregardedasminor.AfullaccidentreportwillrecordmajorincidentsandthiswillbeforwardedtothePrincipalandbeavailabletotheBoardofTrustees.AHazardsandRiskRegistersitsinthestaffroom,shouldaparentorstaffmemberperceiveanissueofconcern.ThePrincipalandBOTintheirrolepertainingto‘dutyofcare’areavailableatalltimes.Theschoolworkshardtoensureiscompliantwiththe2015HealthandSafetyAct.SpecialStorageMedicationsforspecificallergiesorotherconditionsarestoredintheSecretary’soffice.Anyspecificmedicinemustbesuppliedbytheparents,clearlylabelledanddated.N.B.Internalmedicationmustnotbegiventoanychildrenunlessparentshavesuppliedtheschoolwithasignedpermissionslip.TheMinistryhasprovidedschoolswithstrictguidelinesregardingadministrationofprescribedmedicines,andtheschoolhasapolicyregardingthis.MedicalFieldKitsTheschoolmaintainsonemajorcampingkitaswellassmallerfieldtripkit.SendingChildrenHomeTheschoolhasa“SickChildrenatSchool”policy.Sick–FeelingUnwellatSchoolStudentswhofallsickduringthedayaretakentothesickbaywheretheirarrivalisrecordedalongwiththesymptomstheyshow.Whereappropriate,parentsarerungtocomeandcollecttheirson/daughterandtheyshouldbesignedoutofthesickbayandtheexitbookbeforeleavingschool.Intheinterestsofotherstudents,studentswhoshowsymptomsofbeingunwell

WebelievethatHorotiustudentslearnmosteffectivelywhentheyunderstandwhattheyarelearning,whytheyarelearningit,andhowtheywillbeabletousetheirnewlearning.Westrivetostimulatethecuriosityandrisktakinginallourstudents,encouragethemtosearchforrelevantinformationandideas,andchallengethemtouseorapplywhattheydiscoverinnewcontextsorinnewways.TheteachersatHorotiulookforopportunitiestoinvolvestudentsdirectlyindecisionsrelatingtotheirownlearning.Thisencouragesthemtoseewhattheyaredoingasrelevantandtotakegreaterownershipoftheirownlearning.Theschoolplacesstrongemphasisonubiquitouslearningantheunderlyingnotionthatlearningcanoccuratanytimeandinanyplace,usinganytool.
