    President’s Column By Harry Reed

    Cool Cars Everywhere!

Hardly a day goes by when there is not a car show this time of year. Yes, there are Alfa‘s along with other cool autos. The Greg Whitten Garage

tour was great as usual; The National Convention had it share of great Alfas. The Pacific Northwest Historics had its compliment of Alfa‘s and other

great cars. Coming up is Concorso Italiano in Monterey, Alfa‘s will be featured, as will they be featured at the Pebble Beach Concourse d‘Elegance.

In September we have the Kirkland Concourse d‘Elegance and of course Alfa Romeo will be featured. The list could go on and on, of other car

    shows in the local area.

NWARC not to be outdone by these other events decided to put on our own, First Annual All Italian Car and Bike Show. Sharon Crosetto was the

event coordinator and was able to secure Columbia Crest Winery as the site for our First Annual All Italian Car and Bike show. It was a huge suc-

cess; we had about 100 Italian cars and 15 bikes in attendance during the day. At one point I counted about 60 cars, I noted 26 Alfa‘s during the

day and decided I would spend no more time counting cars. Thanks to the help of the Italian car owners we were able to contribute about 377 lbs

of food to charity. There was coffee and pastry to start out the day. Sharon managed to obtain $5 wine tasting tickets for all the Italian car owners

and their quest, at no charge to us. The actual car show was held in the parking lot which had islands of tress‘s, so there was sun and shade, I

would add the weather was perfect. I believe this to be one of our best events in the past few years, and certainly look forward to next year‘s All

Italian Car and Bike show. All this was made possible by the efforts and hard work of Sharon. A big NWARC thanks to Sharon for a splendid day.

We can all look forward to the NWARC celebration of Alfa Romeo‘s 100th birthday on August 14th more information on this event is on page 1.

I was able to get another long drive in last month, about 1,100 miles, this time it was all top down weather. I touched a little of Idaho, Oregon and

of course Washington. I traveled Route 2 in both direction over the Mountain, just seems a little nicer then I-90. I hope to get several more trips in

    before the weather goes south.

It is time to make your plans for the September 18, 19 and 20, Half-Fast-Lap of Washington. The route has been planned, so you may do one, two

or three days of event. As always it will be a different route more info on page 3.

We had a very interesting and informative July meeting at Pete Bristow‘s EXCLUSIVE AUTO REPAIR, I know it was exclusive when saw Joe

Faherty‘s Alfa up on the rack. Pete had some great stories about competition driving and auto repairs. Thanks Pete, for hosting a for great evening

Make your plans now to drive in our September 1st, lapping day at Pacific Raceways. If you don‘t plan to drive, come on out and be part of the

event as a Turn worker, yes lunch is included.

Well I must get back to painting the front of the house, so I may try another one of our fine back roads, hope to see you there.

    Ciao, Harry

  • Half Fast Lap of Washington Sept 18-20

Last Chance to join the Half Fast Lap of Washington! Rooms and Cabins are filling up fast.

This year, we‘ll circumnavigate the Olympic Peninsula in a clockwise rotation. Day One will take us south out of Seattle to a stop at Griot‘s new

facility, then to Morton for lunch, and Windy Ridge viewpoint at Mt. St. Helens. We continue south to the Ape caves area, before landing for the

night at Lone Fir Resort. This resort has a number of cabins for us, a restaurant, and plenty of imports and microbrews to enjoy. (Don‘t miss

the reservations… there are no other overnight options in the area.)

Day Two will take us westbound and then along the southern

shore of the Columbia River on Oregon Hwy 30, before cross-

ing on a tiny Ferry back to Washington. We‘ll stop in a couple

small towns and end the day at historic, and haunted Lake

    Quinault Lodge.

    Day Three, we‘ll

    head to the shore

to enjoy Ruby Beach, then a short walk in the Hoh Rain Forest. We‘ll

keep the doors locked as we drive through Forks… either to keep the

vampires out, or the Twilight fans out. We‘ll have an Italian lunch in Port

Angeles before stopping by a private car collection in Sequim, then head

for the Kingston Ferry for our return to the area.

The roads and scenery should be almost as good as the company we

keep! Reserve your Rooms now… the resorts were holding space for us.

Contact Howard or Beth at Lone Fir Resort, ask for the NWARC event on Sept 18th and reserve your cabin ($65—$95).

The number is 360 238 5210. They take VISA / MC.

Contact Amanda at Lake Quinault Lodge, ask for the NWARC (#2K77FD) event on Sept 19th and reserve your room ($155—$175).

The number is 360 288 2900. They take VISA / MC.

Please also contact Fred Russell at [email protected] or 425 308 6621 so we can have an idea of how many are joining!

We Lost A Great Person... Russ Neely

Many of us have met, talked with, or ex-

changed Alfa Romeo info with a passionate member of the Alfa community, Russ

Neely. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious injury while attending a wedding of Alfisti in Detroit. He fell, hit his head, suffering

    serious injuries.

Sadly, on August 4th, Russ passed away

    from his injuries.

Family plans are for Russ to be cremated,

then his widow, Peg will drive back with Russ‘ family near Des Moines Iowa where a

memorial service will be held on August 7th. Updates will be posted as soon as the address or location infor-mation is known, for those that may wish to either attend or send

    something for the service.

Peg‘s brother will then drive her home to Oklahoma City from Des Moines, and a service in Oklahoma City will be held, but date and

location are yet to be determined. Last evening a gathering at the home of Susie and David Small was

held where family in Michigan and many Alfa family attended.

As a result of the outpouring of stories on ―how I met Russ‖ and so much more, this evening John Justus will create a new forum on the AROC web site – Member Memories.

    www.aroc-usa.org

Russ was commonly found on the Digest and had served as national

Competition Chair for AROC-USA for over ten years.

In the June / July newsletter, I attributed a number of convention photos to ―Courtesy of Brewster Thackeray‖ and though he was nice enough to send them to me, I found out who they were shot by. For that, I want to say thanks to Mike Hollinger / Rick Andreoli / AROC of Atlanta for their good eyes, photos, and generosity.

Rick was also the artist behind the birthday cake graphic and the 100 Years of Alfa Cars and 100 Years of Alfa

Grills posters that can be bought from the national web site at: www.aroc-usa.biz

Pacific Raceways Lapping Evening WrapUp… June 23rd

Here are 10 basics to consider to help ensure you are track ready for any of the club lapping days.

    1. Read the good info at the club website: NWALFACLUB.com under the Track option on the left side navigation bar.

    2. Go to Motorsportsreg.com and make sure you have signed up and paid. There is good reference info there as well.

    3. Know where the event is to be held... Pacific Raceways in Kent, or Bremerton Motorsports Park.

    4. Know what time to be there and plan to arrive a little early just to make sure you have time to prep your car which includes removing any

loose items. It is good to bring a plastic bin to leave all you things in during your driving stints.

    5. Make sure you bring your proper gear… approved helmet, long sleeve shirt , long pants, socks, shoes, gloves. (No skin exposed makes for a

safer situation in case of fire, and avoid clothes made of nylon polyester or spandex.)

    6. Make sure your car is in good working order. Check your brakes, fluids, and tires. Ensure the tires are in good shape and lugs are tightened.

No bungee cord holding the battery. If you see leaks, or hoses in bad condition, make sure you attend to them. Make sure the roll bar extends

higher than the head of anyone in the car… including an instructor. You don‘t want to get stopped during the Tech Inspection prior to the days

    events.

    7. Make sure you attend the Driver’s Meeting. It is required, and the rules of the days will be discussed, including flagging rules. This is impor-

tant since the flags and turner workers are there for you and your safety. This is also where any specific track issues or conditions will be dis-

    cussed.

    8. Whether you have track tires or not, plan to manage your tires carefully. Have a tire pressure gauge and fine tune your pressure setting as

needed. I‘ve watched people readjusting the pressure slightly between runs to find just the right cold setting that works best once heated on the

track. A little goes a long way.

    9. Make sure you keep hydrated, and eat a good breakfast first. The food will give you energy, and the water keeps you alive. The club always

provides a healthy lunch… sometimes a fancy lunch.

    10. You win if it is a fun day, and a safe day!

    Kirkland Concours d’Elegance Sept 12th

    Among car enthusiasts

    this family oriented

    event has quickly be-

    come recognized as

    one of the premier

    concours events in the

    country with partici-

    pant vehicles selected

    from across the United

    States and Canada. All

    profits from this spec-

    dren's care at Seattle

    Children's Hospital and

    Evergreen Hospital

    Medical Center, with

    more than one million

dollars already donated to these needy recipients.

Set on the beautiful shores of Lake Washington, the Kirkland Concours is enjoyed by in-

dividuals of all ages. This year will be special for us Alfisti… they are featuring Ford and

Alfa Romeo as the marques of choice. They should have a few very nice Alfas on display

for us including the 8c2300 known as The Rimoldi. It was a car owned and enjoyed by a

true Alfista for 51 years who raised a family and went on vacations with this car.

Wouldn‘t that have been a good upbringing!

Location: Carillon Point in Kirkland, WA

Once each month, there is a casual but nice car

gathering on Whidbey Island that often attracts a

good variety of cars. This is put on by the Whidbey

Island European Sports Car Club (WIESCC). Usu-

ally Alfas are represented by one or more NWARC

members. On July 17th, the NWARC was more

than represented. The host of the gathering was

    our member, Rod McNae.

Some of you may remember a previous drive where

we stopped at Rod‘s new home and saw his very

nice garage space. Typically, these events are held

at Gerry Woolery‘s restaurant (Gerry‘s Kitchen) in

Freeland. The next one will be August 7th!

Thanks for hosting in July, Rod!

  • All Italian Car & Motorcycle Gathering WrapUp Columbia Winery July 11th

The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club

The turn out was very impressive for the first annual All Italian Car & Motorcycle Gathering at the Columbia Winery in Woodinville. The event,

organized by Sharon Crosetto (Thanks Sharon!) and sponsored by NWARC, started early Saturday morning, and throughout the day, a number

of great Alfas, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Ducatis, and more showed up. We had only one Fiat and one Pantera, but they represented their marques

well. Mike Leonetti showed up with his Alfa 8cCompetizione, then quietly walked home to bring his Ferrari 575 Superamerica down as well. We

ended up with 337 pounds of food being gathered for the charity of choice, Hope-Link; a Redmond based group helping to feed and support the

needs of many people in society.

Columbia Winery did a great job as well with most of the parking area dedicated to our cars, fun prizes, good food, and great wine tasting. The

whole experience was very nice and we‘re planning now for the second annual event next year!

  • Concorso Italiano Aug 13, 2010

Concorso Italiano is celebrating the Alfa Romeo Centennial. There is an outpouring of enthusiasm for Alfa Romeo across the automotive world, and Concorso Italiano

will be a great place to join hundreds of owners as they display a century of Alfa

    excellence.

Two of this year‘s special guests are... Richard Gadeselli, Vice President Communi-cations Fiat Group Automobiles SpA, and Stefano Agazzi, Head of Alfa Romeo‘s Historic Activity Department and Alfa Romeo Museum Curator. Richard is no

stranger to Concorso having attended several of events in the old days at Quail.

We are also working with Alfa Romeo in order to find a unique way of recognizing

the most historically relevant Alfa Romeo displayed at this

    year‘s Concorso.

Come and witness the spec-trum of Alfa Romeo, both old

  • Alfa Romeo at Pebble Beach Aug 15, 2010

Alfa Romeo will be showcased as a featured marque at the 60th Pebble Beach Concours d‘Elegance in California on Sunday 15 August, 2010.

Regarded as one of the most prestigious events in the motoring calendar,

the Pebble Beach Concours d‘Elegance is contested on the famed 18th fair-way of the exclusive Pebble Beach Golf Links. Judged on their excellence, historical accuracy, technical merit and style, 200 of the world‘s most prized collector cars have been invited to challenge for the esteemed title of ‗Best

in Show‘. (Jon Shirley‘s 8C2900B won this honor a couple years ago! Not an easy achievement!)

Alongside many exquisite, privately owned Alfa Romeos, a significant list of historic Alfas will make the pilgrimage from the Alfa Romeo Museum (Museo

Storico) in Arese, Italy to take their place amongst the rarefied elite. A to-tal of seven priceless Alfa Romeo Museum cars will be on display at the Peb-ble Beach Concours d‘Elegance

Built in 1910, the ALFA 24 HP was the first car to carry the ALFA badge.

1952 Disco Volante ‗flying saucer‘ spider, aptly named prototype be-

cause of its unique visual design.

1923 RL Targa Florio - winner of the 1923 Targa Florio, and the inaugu-

ral car to feature the famous Alfa Quadrifoglio Verde badge.

The Gran Premio Tipo A, Alfa‘s first single-seater racing car which won

the 1931 Coppa Acerbo, and its successor, the Tipo B (P3) which in-cluded an aerodynamically developed version that proceeded to win

the IV Internationales Avusrennen in 1934 with a winning average speed of 128 mph.

    1938 Gran Premio Tipo 158 ‗Alfetta‘ also celebrates a 60th anniversary -

that of the first ever Formula One World Championship race.

Another Alfa Romeo legend at the event will be the 8C 2900 B Lungo.

Built in 1938, and bodied by Touring, this light blue, practically produc-tion car coupe, won the 1947 Mille Miglia making it the 11th and final Alfa Romeo to

win the famous ‗thousand mile‘ race. The name ‗Lungo‘ refers to the 8C‘s long wheel base chassis design.

Visitors will be assured of an ex-

perience that will demonstrate the passion and motoring excel-lence the Alfa Romeo is famous for.

  • Miniatures: The Man behind Revival International Some content reprinted from DieCast Magazine!

Though most miniatures I purchase arrive finished, there are a few com-

panies that make high quality miniatures we can assemble. Revival In-

ternational is one of the few, and perhaps puts out the best products.

I have a couple of their kits, the Alfa P3, and Alfa 159. They make around 30 different cars focusing on Fer-

rari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Bugatti, Mercedes, and

Audi, and only from the many years ago. Noth-

    ing modern.

They draw their inspi-ration from the fact

that they are located in the heart of the Italian car region… Bologna,

Italy. The founder, Sandro Bergami, grew up with the history of the cars and the famous drivers (Varsi, Nu-

volari, Compari, and Ascari) in his life, and has seen many of the famous cars in Museums,

    collections, or events.

Every model is made in 1:20 scale, and uses the original manufacturer drawings and plans for proper proportions and detail. The bodies are made of cast alloy, with alloy, turned aluminum, and plastic used for detail and interior parts. The bodies and many parts are

prepainted and ready to assemble. Each kit comes with approximately 200 parts. Often,

a person can add even more detail paint if they choose.

The secret is that Revival will pre-assemble the cars for your for an added fee. Either

way, they put out a great product and will look fantastic on your shelf.
