This was certainly a proud day for UCLA Athletics and UCLA Basketball, and I was grateful to be a part of it.” Kat Lauer: “My first memory of UCLA is from my recruiting trip February of 2009, I flew here from Connecticut with my parents and we saw the boathouse where I would later row, and watched the Men’s Basketball team play. I was hooked from then on.” Emily Lerner: “My first memory of UCLA was from when I was a freshman in a small college in New York and picked up a Sports Illustrated that had a story about Ann Meyers playing basketball at UCLA and how she could play against the men as well as the women. I was so impressed by her story that it made me look up UCLA (in a library; this was pre-internet) to find out more about this incredible woman. From then on I followed UCLA games.” Jill Machuca: “My first UCLA memory was from the 1989 UCLA-USC football game at the Coliseum. Bruin Alfredo Velasco (who lived on my block) kicked a field goal on the final play of the game that hit the crossbar and bounced back into the end zone. It would’ve been the winning point for UCLA.” Parker Poliakoff: “My first UCLA memory is watching the 2008 UCLA vs. Cal basketball game. I was watching it on TV with my friends in Connecticut and we all went crazy when Josh Shipp hit the game winning shot from behind the backboard!” Josh Rebholz: “My first memory of UCLA was when I was hired, which was the summer of 2012, I was taken by a colleague to the old “UCLA Men’s Gym” (now the Student Activities Center) to watch the NBA professionals play “pick-up” basketball. I was amazed to see so many other NBA players – including NBA All-Stars and future Basketball Hall of Famers – playing basketball with our current Bruins and many former Bruins but without any of the fanfare you might expect. It was raw, it was astonishing and it was so…UCLA. I will never forget that “Aha” moment where I knew I was on a campus that was unlike any other in the country – and it was an incredible feeling.” Zack Rosenfeld: “My first UCLA memory was back in the late ‘90s when my parents took me to the Rose Bowl for my first UCLA Football game. Robinson, Wooden, Meyers, Joyner-Kersee, Walton, Vidmar, Johnson, Ashe, Smith, Abdul-Jabbar, Connors, Pavin, Banks, Chambliss, Griffith Joyner, Partie, Warren …. It was then that I realized how special UCLA Athletics truly was.” Taylor Swearingen: “My first UCLA memory was in Pauley Pavilion in 2004 when I was a recently admitted prospective UCLA student watching UCLA Gymnastics compete for (and ultimately win) the NCAA Championship.
